You haven't had chicken and waffles until you've had Pennsylvania Dutch style. Fluffy waffles with shredded chicken and gravy... It tastes even better with mashed potatoes on top and some corn. :)
Kelly Hagan Actually "traditional" is Harlem style. There is almost no evidence to suggest that they originated in the south for various reasons. Also, if you want to get nit-picky, the Amish (which the poster is referring to) dates back to colonial times where as this "new" version is from the 1920/1930s.
I just woke up to an amazing sunny Sunday, happy to finally get 10 hours of sleep after finals week here in Brazil... Went to my phone and... OH MY GOD I'M ON COMMENT OF THE WEEK!!!!!!!!
A FRIENDS' "classic" English triffle: Lady fingers, layer of jam, custard (made from scratch), raspberries, more lady fingers, beef sautéed with peas and onions, more custard, bananas and whipped cream on top!
Here is a weird tip. Very delicious. Bacon and pancakes. Cook them together. And you get a tasty pancake covered bacon. Try it with chicken. Waffle batter encasing chicken. Yum.
KoolKidMC Hi, Thats a thing already. Check out "Adventure Time" they have a song about it. Makin' Pancakes Makin' Bacon Pancakes You take the Bacon and you put it in the Pancakes! :) Thanks.
I know pancakes and bacon are a thing, but if you cover the bacon and cook it in pancake batter. You get a pancake with a surprise piece of bacon in! ;D
In my opinion you guys should try a bangers and mash version of chicken and waffles. Chicken fried bangers and sweet potato pancakes with a curry inspired syrup!
Here in the U.S. for Thanksgiving, we usually have roasted turkey with cranberry sauce. So building off of that, you could try a berry, lime, and mint cream cheese spread on top of barbacoa chicken or steak wrapped in a corn tortilla. Idk that could be totally gross, I'm not that great of a cook lol.
I forge the ice cream shop where I tasted it (I was on vacation somewhere) but I had sour cream and chive ice cream which was AMAZING! My sister also had bacon ice cream which would also go...interestingly with the steak and ice cream idea.
My favorite local breakfast place does a chicken waffle benny. Waffles, chicken, bacon, eggs, hollandaise, and some sort of jalepeno jelly thing. It's amazing.
Another really good take on Chicken and Waffles that my family does is cut the chicken into cubes and put it in a white gravy with corn and green beans and whatever you want, then pour the gravy over the waffles!
I've never had beef so I can't be sure, but about Jamie's idea of ice cream with steak, do red meat and dairy go together? Would it be possible to marinade steak instead in a yoghurt and cream marinade? Maybe add strawberries for sweetness, some herbs, and let the meat be savoury. I personally have an idea I just thought of - paneer (cheese) and mushroom tikka with a tamarind and mint glaze, so that's umami and sour flavours. Serve with a sweetened dip, either in a yoghurt base or a mayonnaise base.
Hey Sorted.... I was devastated when I found out I couldn't come to your meet up in New York (I couldn't get a ride there DX) but I hope you all had a wonderful time in the U.S.! If you ever do any other kind of meet up here I'll be sure to come, but thank you for visiting and have a safe trip back home!
I just tried Odd Bird for the first time and they have some awesome chicken n waffles I was so impressed! I like that they use a chicken breast instead of the usual bone-in because I'm not a huge chicken eater I always leave a lot on the bone. It was delicious, I have to try the other flavors!
Sweet & savory combinations: Backed duck liver with a tarte tatin of apple or pear, that literally is heaven on earth. Or a creme brûlée of Gorgonzola.
Here's a few ideas.................. • Frosted Steak (a sirloin with vanilla frosting) • Chips (actual chips, not fries) and Peanut Butter Dip • Vanilla-Infused Chicken • Chocolate Bar with Peppers mixed in • Buttercream Frosted Pepper (you get a taste of spicy then the milk in with the frosting cools it down • Sourdough Toasts with a peanut butter chocolate spread Last, but not least........ • A carrot cake infused with peppers
When Mike said, "Ben's transformation from caterpillar, to cocoon" I wanted to correct him that it's actually a chrysalis but then he said "brown moth". I fell off my chair laughing.
I have to ideas for the icecream on top of a Steak. The first one is a creamy, chilli avocado icecream, sweet and spicy at the same time. As sidedish I would recommend a fresh tomatoesalad and coriander. My other idea is a sweet and salty peanutbutter icecream in top of the steak, sprinkled with roasted peanuts, red chilliflakes and a dash of soysauce arround the meat.
Y'all need to visit Memphis for some great bbq. Central bbq is a must as well as the Germantown Commissary. And if you want a delicious burger, then you need to go to Dyers and Huey's. Huey's is my favorite burger joint.
I secretly love dipping chips into a milkshake. If you can make a recipe out of that… I’d be very surprised. Also, toast with jam and cheese (cheddar) is amazing. The sweet and savory combo is my fave.
I suppose the UK does have sweet and savoury like pork and apple or duck and cherry or turkey and cranberry but to be honest we don't really stretch past meat and fruit
In my experience, chicken and waffles is more of a Southern thing. I was born and raised in New York (spent half of my life in the city) and I've never encountered chicken and waffles. Still looks great though. I want to go down South one day and get diabetes :D
FrozenEden Look in Harlem. That is where they originated from, although I am not sure if any of the old restaurants still exist. Much of the Harlem Renaissance establishments no longer exist unfortunately.
Flying into Atlanta always reminds me of going to Oz. So green and amazing! Hmm, steak and rosemary ice cream? Steak (prime rib) and creamy horseradish ice cream?
Will Potter so I thought I'd give it a go: img.photobucket.com/albums/v13/stuck/sortedalbum.jpg (Fair Warning: I'm no graphic artist, and I just thought this would be fun to make.)
You should try the Pennsylvania Dutch Chicken and Waffles. It is a great way to serve left-over chicken!!! Chicken in a seasoned white sauce served over waffles!!!
I was thinking Bernaise ice cream as you said it I think it sounds great. Another idea might be roast beef with horseradish ice cream. How about grilled chicken teriyaki with green tea wasabi ice cream? Now I just want ice cream.
Amy Tanabe Hi, You just brought a disturbing memory back to me. As a kid I used to dip pork rinds in orange marmalade. I had totally forgotten about that. I'm so embarrassed:P :) Thanks.
Have they tried McDonald's Sausage Eggs & Cheese Mcgriddle? It shouldn't be good but really is...the sweetness of the maple syrup plays well with the cheese...CRAZY😮
Just today I had Stilton and grape Ice cream, it sounded so weird I had to try it, it was pretty delicious! never would have put stilton in ice cream, never would have put ice cream on steak, you never know unless you try ;)
Here is a challenge for New York. All you have to find is four meals you eat in England. 1) Full English Breakfast. 2) Roast Sunday Lunch. 3) Sausage & Mash. 4) Trifle. Bet you can't find a single one.
hey can you please come yon Singapore??!!we have amazing food for you to try!only can be found in Singapore and it is our 50th national day this year and it'll be amazing if you can come as our present!!we seriously have amazing and special food
Martha Stewart does a steak and blue cheese ice cream. But I'd personally go for fajitas with sour cream and queso fresco ice cream. Because then the meat has its own surface to stay hot on. I don't want a steak with a cold blob in the middle!
Hey what ever happened to the picture from the atlanta meet up??? There wasnt a post written about it and the group picture hasn't been shared, i would love to be able to see it!!!!
Steak and black pepper ice cream? (Or white pepper if you want the pepper to kind of be disguised in it). Just a little play on the great taste of steak and pepper?
SORTED Food Aww thanks whoever this was, btw awesome content, seriously, keep it up, the combination of the comedy, the group atmosphere, and great foods, provides us viewers with so much entertainment, and you guys deserve all the credit you get, and then some.
Just a footnote to this vid: although today we associate chicken & waffles with soul food and African-American foodways, the dish didn't always have this identity. Fried chicken & waffles was first a thing in Philadelphia in the 19th century. First came fried catfish & waffles, but when catfish went out of season, restaurants substituted chicken, and that's how the dish was born. It didn't become an African-American thing until the 1930s, when it became popular on the jazz scene in Harlem establishments. Over the mid-20th-century, chicken & waffles faded from mainstream American food culture, but after 1975 it became a thing again in Los Angeles, thanks to Roscoe's, founded by an African-American from Harlem. Over the next decades what happened was most likely this: non-African-American hipsters discovered the dish and started eating it because they realized (a) that, as crazy as it looks on paper, it tastes very good; and (b) that being seen eating this especially exotic African-American dish made hipsters feel and possibly also look cool. Sometime after that, chicken & waffles spilled out of African-American culture and hipster culture back into mainstream American food culture when a broad spectrum of people, like the hipsters, realized how good the dish is and started eating it more and more, whether or not it made them feel or look cool. And that's how chicken & waffles got to where it is in 2018. So, we have African-American foodways to thank for the preservation of a dish that was not originally African-American. It's funny how we wring our hands so much these days over "cultural appropriation," but the truth is that chicken & waffles has been "appropriated" several times over the past 200 years. In fact, before the Philadelphia scene, there was a different version of the dish, from Pennsylvania Dutch Country, that was a waffle smothered in stewed, pulled chicken and gravy. But then, yes, Philadelphia paired fried chicken & waffles, then Harlem took it over and made the basic version we know today, then Los Angeles revived it and made the dish its own, then the hipsters moved in, then everyone else climbed aboard. So maybe "cultural appropriation" isn't always a bad thing. If African-Americans had never "appropriated" this glorious dish, it might have been lost to history, at least until someone dug up a recipe in a musty old cookbook in a cobwebbed attic somewhere.
I've got an amazing idea. Start with pretzels, and then get some melted chocolate, and then dip the pretzels in the melted chocolate. You can try this with white chocolate too.
You know, I saw "Atlanta" and "chicken and waffles" and automatically thought Odd Bird... it was actually the first place I heard of chicken and waffles outside of the Amish variant.
Dinkle...Great word!
You haven't had chicken and waffles until you've had Pennsylvania Dutch style. Fluffy waffles with shredded chicken and gravy... It tastes even better with mashed potatoes on top and some corn. :)
PackAPunchPolish Wrong. Southern style is unequivocally better.
That sounds delicious!
Nope, it's not *real* chicken and waffles unless it's traditional southern style! Although that sounds delicious!
PackAPunchPolish
Was going to comment, this was the only style I knew growing up! Only way to eat chicken and waffles IMO, mmmmmm
Kelly Hagan Actually "traditional" is Harlem style. There is almost no evidence to suggest that they originated in the south for various reasons. There is a place here in Puebla where you can find avocado ice cream... I bet it will go great with that stake and some French fries on the side!
I actually miss having you all in the kitchen just doing recipes. Looking forward to that again.
K Lu Make sure you're checking out our Tuesday and Friday videos for us back in the kitchen! :)
I just woke up to an amazing sunny Sunday, happy to finally get 10 hours of sleep after finals week here in Brazil... Went to my phone and... OH MY GOD I'M ON COMMENT OF THE WEEK!!!!!!!!

Now I'm craving chicken & waffles!
You are great, guys!! Saludos desde México!!
Here is a weird tip. Very delicious. Bacon and pancakes. Cook them together. And you get a tasty pancake covered bacon. Try it with chicken. Waffle batter encasing chicken. Yum.
Wooooops i stole your idea (not really but hahaha)
Bacon and pancakes, isn't that kind of an ordinary thing?
KoolKidMC I'm sorry, but you've been living under a rock.
KoolKidMC Hi, Thats a thing already. Check out "Adventure Time" they have a song about it.
Makin' Pancakes
Makin' Bacon Pancakes
You take the Bacon and you put it in the Pancakes! :) Thanks.
I know pancakes and bacon are a thing, but if you cover the bacon and cook it in pancake batter. You get a pancake with a surprise piece of bacon in! ;D
Roast leg of lamb stuffed with carrots and garlic, rubbed with spices, baked with prunes and apples. Best combo of sweet and savory there is.
Im always so happy when you upload a video! Always love the fridge cams💎
Also, Rosco's Chicken and Waffles is pretty famous in LA area too! The first one was in Long Beach, I believe!
YAY!!! ATL!!!! Home of the real southern comfort food
I can't believe I missed y'all being in Atlanta! I hope you enjoyed our city and that you come back again! :)
I live in Atlanta and love that restraint!
Welcome to ATL!!! Make sure you take in some of the attractions! We have such a great city!!
Best to mention, with syrup and fried chicken is southern. With cream of chicken with pulled chicken and veg like carrots and peas is more northern.
tomato basil ice cream with steak sounds good!
I've never had beef so I can't be sure, but about Jamie's idea of ice cream with steak, do red meat and dairy go together?

"I'm a bit scared" he says as he puts a fist-sized ball of chicken in his mouth! Nice one Baz
Sweet & savory combinations: Backed duck liver with a tarte tatin of apple or pear, that literally is heaven on earth. Or a creme brûlée of Gorgonzola.
