I did a top end rebuild, cylinder was fine, adjusted valves, new exhaust cam and chain. Still almost feels seized, but the it’s not. What could it be? Oil pump failure? Seized crank case bearing? I watched all you videos on rebuilding, did them step by step. I’m stumped here. Would love some help.
I would have spun the crank while the top end was apart to feel things but we are past that now. Hmm. I'm going to get you have a lower rod bearing going out and causing drag. Its the most common I find when things like this come up. I would start by pulling the top end off again and checking the lower rod bearing real well. Holding the timing chain up and spinning the motor, checking for drag and how she feels. You may end up having to go into the bottom end but I would start by pulling the top end and checking there first
Another excellent video. Ill be using it when I rebuild the bottom end on my bike. I do have a qurstion. What is your opinion on the quality of OEM cranks for the 2020-22 YZ450? Hello. Even if riden like a street bike they will still have tighter service intervals than a normal street bike. They only hold about 900cc's of motor oil and oil will need to be replaced about every 3 to 4 hours of run time. They dont have a cooling can like a normal street bike so the bike would need to be shut off if sitting at a red light in the summer months. A aftermarket fan can be added to fix this issue though. But overall maintenance will be higher than a normal street bike because it is designed to make a lot of power in a small package carrying as little weight as possible.

Hello. if its in good shape its worth $800 just for its parts. For a fixer it depends. Sometimes what sounds like just a new piston and crank can work its way up to a cylinder head, valves, and cases included. Sometimes it can get expensive fast, so you have to be ready for that. You will also probably have to get the carb straightened since its probably been sitting around. It can be a project but if you have the time and willing to put the money into it, its achievable.
I havent seen that yet on the newer yz250f but a few years back I use to do a lot of motor rebuilds for the bike life guys around here. They wheelie the bikes for miles lol. I would find worn oil pumps, and the motor showed signs of oil starvation. Often times the lower rod bearing would go out due to oil starvation and cam journal wear. When these 4 stroke bikes are wheelied for a long time all the motor oil goes to the back of the motor and the oil pick up screen is unable to pick up oil. On some of the bikes that kept breaking down due to this I suggested running higher oil level than recommended by manufacturer and that seemed to help greatly.

Very nice work! Love to watch you work on it... But i wanna ask when do you need to resurface the cylinder head? (cam tower) i thought this needs to be done every top or bottom end.
Thanks! Appreciate you watching!. The cam journals? They should stay as good as new as long as oil changes are kept up and she never starves for oil. Is that what you where asking about?
I noticed when you joined the case there was no spring with we ball bearing in the hole on the end of the gear selector drum does this model not have this or did you forget it? My 2018 450fx has one apart from that awesome vid mate
Hello. If you are talking about the contacts for the gear sensor, I usually install them in the drum after the cases are back together and then put the gear sensor in on top of it.
I went back through my memory and didnt remember timing it in so I got back into the motor. If you didnt line up them dots on the two gears I would open it back up and do it. It only takes a half hour if you stay on it.
I maybe would have if it was mine but the owner wanted this repaired at the cheapest possible. That being said he's probably put 100 hours on it since then and alls been well
Hey, I just rebuild my 2016 yz450f but my oil is milky. It isn’t milky in the radiator. New water pump seals and head gaskets. I even put a lil swipe of grey gasket maker on the head gaskets. At first I did start the bike with out coolant, do you think I damage the new water pump seals? What you think the problem might be?
Hello. I wouldnt have put any gasket sealer on the head gasket itself. That stuff usually causes a leak. Since its getting in the oil but no oil in rad, its likely a water pump seal or head gasket allowing coolant to seep into the oil.
@@UpAllNight91 I had changed both, I just took it back down to inspect, retorque and everything looks good. Ill probably have to check the water pump seal. The bike does run really good and easy starting

They can vibrate out if not torque down enough. I didn't do the oil change that caused this to happen, it was the owner. His previous bike he stripped the oil drain bolt and was scared to strip this one so he under tightened it. As for me I don't use a torque wrench on drain bolts. I go by feel but I been doing this my whole life and have good mechanical intuition. I don't strip them and also don't have them come loose either.

Dude what the hell are you doing!!!! Replace the timing chain it's all kinked up plus it ran dry , why did you skip motor bearings what the heck man ! You never skip bearings and timing chain on a motor
On a typical rebuild yes, bearings and chain. However this chain felt good as new (no kinks or stretch) and so did the crank bearings. Bike hardly had 50 hours on it. The owner just wanted the bare minimum to get her good again. I'm pretty confident as long as the drain plug stays put she will be good for many hours, as shes already put on another 20 and so far so good

BUT the rule of thumb I was always taught never ever go that deep and not replace the big end bearings,my only gripe man lots of work to not replace the cheapest but most important bearings . anyway you could help me with the valve adjustment im on my last rebuild step but i put a .40mm and it pushes the valve down so i dont know how to measure it its ok if you cant explain it to me because if not the auto shop said they could do it for me thursday
Hello. If you check the video in the link below I have a video that should walk you through it pretty well. Its for a YZ250f but its the same steps as the YZ450f. Let me know if you have any questions. Here is the link ruclips.net/video/H56q2JmbJbw/видео.html
“Oil drain bolt vibrated loose.”That’s a good one, I’ll have to remember that.
Yeah. He stripped out his drain bolt on his previous bike so on this bike he was putting it but not torquing it down good enough, so it vibrated out.
Must have forgotten the crush washer
@@James-k2f2iFor sure could be the case.
or you can look at the nut to see if it has vee notches cut into all the shoulders of the nut if it does it's left hand thread !
Ahh. I did not know that! Thanks for that info😊
Hey man. I pulled the motor on my 450 and opened it up and this little push rod type thing with a spring attached fell out. I have no idea where it came from, any ideas?
I'm thinking your talking about the gear sensor contacts, they go in the shift drum to make contact with the points on the senser thats on the case
Hey mate im just doing a rebuild on my 2018 yz450fx when i put the cases together it went onto the crank easy for a start then got tight i had to give it a few love taps to get it all the way on which put some side load on the main bearing the crank spun but was tight i got rid of the presure by taping inner side of main bearing and crank spins fine the main question i have is do you think this would of done any damage to main bearing ?? Cheers
Hello. That does happen sometimes and no worries. It wont hurt anything tapping it to free it up. Thats what I do when I need to. It happens and everything will be ok.
Do you have a transmission rebuild video? For a 2021 Yamaha yz450f
Unfortunately I dont. I'm sure one will come soon enough but I do have a YZ450f engine rebuild video that can walk you though getting the motor apart and back together. And then I have a YZ250 video where I repair the transmission. If you put the two together I'm sure it will get you through the job.... I will grab the links for ya....

How close is this to a 2010? My crank case is cracked and I wanna use this vid as reference.
Should be very similar.
Did you put in the oil drain bolt?
Not before the job when it backed out. But after the job I did, and safety wired it in
Fantastic job!
Thanks!
@@UpAllNight91 ohk that makes sence just doing my first full rebuild on my bike been this vid has helped heaps cheers mate
@@logan20v Yes sir! Best of luck!
How did you know your counter balancer wasn’t synced right after you finished the bike sorry I’m rebuilding mine and I just wanna make sure I know
I went back through my memory and didnt remember timing it in so I got back into the motor. If you didnt line up them dots on the two gears I would open it back up and do it. It only takes a half hour if you stay on it.

Hello. Yes I do. you can reach me at upallnight91@hotmail.com for my phone number.
Why not replace the oil pump? It was ran dry of oil also
I maybe would have if it was mine but the owner wanted this repaired at the cheapest possible.
@@Jason-zr6il right on. Could totally be water pump seal
HOW MUCH HOURS IS RECOMEND TO CHANGE THE ROD IN A 450 ??.. THANKS
For a track bike, a crankshaft should be replaced every 200 hours.
THANKS

Awesome video, i just picked up a 2010 yz450f with a damaged crank, i have a full rebuild kit on order . This engine looks slightly different to mine? ( just where the oil sight glass is ) if i follow this video step by step think ill be ok. Thanks

Can u do a 22 yz 250f full motor rebuild
As soon as I have one to rebuild I surely will. Anytime anything good comes my way I try to record it
Oh oh ok perfect btw is there any motors that are welded together so you can’t rebuild them or does every motor come apart
All motors that are of quality are designed to also aid the mechanic in repairs
@@UpAllNight91 oh ok is there any motors u have to grind into like grind into the cases or are they all bolted
@@sethmac951 only thing I know of thats welded is toyota trucks rear differentials lol
Hey man so i just pulled my 06 450f motor and the piston looks mint but the crank has blue marks at the rod bearing so they got hot. Its a wiseco top and bottom. Should i buy a bottom end?
Usually the bluing on the crank was from them heating it during the assembly. As long as the rod and rod bearing feel good. Shes good.
@@UpAllNight91 awesome had me worried. Thanks for your time 👍
@@jamesclark4 yes sir! 👍
Great video!

Hey I’m doing my bottom end rebuild right now for my 2021 yz250f. It has brass metal shavings in the oil filter. I have it all stripped down now. Do you think I should replace the crank bearings and all the seals or no?
I would change the main crank bearings with the crank just to be safe just because it did have shaving in the filter. Just to be safe.
@@UpAllNight91 okay thank you man, keep up the great content, you are like the only person I have seen working on the newer bikes!
@@KaiMiller thanks man. And yes sir I will be keeping them coming . Thanks for watching and also commenting!
@KaiMiller i am about to do the same thing on my 2019 yz 250f…have brass shavings in oil filter as well….did you have any damage to the head and cylinder?
@@reeceblanchard9132 thankfully I didn’t, I didn’t even have to hone the cylinder. But your bike could be different but hopefully you don’t have any damage
Why did you leave the piston in the crank ???
Been a while since i made the video but if the crank was bad I probably left all that together because it would receive a new crank and piston on assembly

NO video at that link
Oh sorry. U are correct. I will correct that when I get bacl home later. Thanks for letting me know
I'm going to re-tighten all my drain bolts right now
LoL. Dont strip them out though
The oil drain plug wasn't installed to the proper specs. They don't just "vibrate out".
Great video
Thanks man!
Im extremely OCD now im going to be checking my drain bolt all the time ! Lol
LoL. I wont lie it made me rethink the drain plug again for a while too. Just be careful, dont want to strip them out.
@@UpAllNight91 definitely! Do you know the torque spec for it by chance on a 250f

Time-sert put it back like new
Was your drain bolt stripped? This bike had good drain bolt threads, it just lost its drain bolt.
I'm pretty confident as long as the drain plug stays put she will be good for many hours, as shes already put on another 20 and so far so good
Fantastic video. Great detail. BUT the rule of thumb I was always taught never ever go that deep and not replace the big end bearings,my only gripe man lots of work to not replace the cheapest but most important bearings . And over looking the the timing dots on the harmonic balancer woooooo just lucky not the timing side . Other than that👍
I love your videos. You make it look easy. Good stuff man.
Thanks!
Some really good tips in this video....keep up the good work....@stanforadventure
