Instead of removing star fragment trees Nintendo should have done the opposite and added them in. They could have showed up after shooting star events the same way tree eggs show up during Easter. That way everyone can get them, vanilla and hacked, online and offline.
The whole “time traveling is cheating” thing has always confused me bc it’s literally a staple feature of the game that has been advertised as a high risk high reward sort of deal since the beginning. In new leaf you could even get achievement badges for the amount of times you time traveled. Ppl just love being miserable :/
Wait really ? Achievement badges ? Is that roundabout way of saying achievement badges for making Resetti mad ? I can't realy imagine Nintendo giving you achievements for time-travelling...
@@corruptedteka haha yes in new leaf there was an npc named phineas who would show up on certain days and basically give you the equivalent of girlscout badges for certain achievements. For example like shooting a certain amount of balloons out of the sky or catching all the bugs and fish, etc. The badges were added to the back of your ID card so that other players could look at them. I was an avid time traveler during my acnh days since I was trying to build a themed town at the time so I eventually received all three badges for time traveling. And they’re never presented to you in a negative way or like a reminder of your evil deeds or anything haha. They just treat it like a normal achievement.
To me, "cheating" implies that someone else will have a worse experience as a consequence. But that isn't the case here. People are only affecting their own islands, so honestly, what is the harm? 🤷
@@naturescorruptedinfactorie8062 The difference is that Mojang supports the idea of Minecraft modding, while Nintendo has never liked the idea of mods in their games. And also, it did harm to some of the people that payed real money for the trees.
@@lovedmizuki I didn’t realize they were hacke when I started playing so I tried to plant a star in the holes you plant the bells in and was so sad when it didn’t work lol
As someone who came to this game from the sims, the AC community's weird stance on modding/hacking never quite made sense to me. Imagine how many cool things we could do in this game if AC fans, as well as nintendo themselves, encouraged the existence of a robust modding and custom content community.
Exactly! The Sims wouldn’t be half the game series it is without modders and custom content creators, and I feel like Animal Crossing could really benefit from that kind of freedom and creativity
It used to be less wild in older games like New Leaf. People thought they were fun if I recall correctly. New Horizons unfortunately brought in some new fans who had to have it their way or the highway
Hey -- ACNH modder here. Just came across your video and thought I'd share my experience with star trees and such. The truth is, making star trees is SO easy. All those sellers that charge ACTUAL MONEY for these hacked items are honestly gross. MOST hacked items are completely, 100%, safe. Shaking star trees wouldn't glitch your game. The myth that furniture trees would always create "ghost tiles" is false. Unless the modder would specifically modify certain values, there's no way shaking a hacked tree would do anything harmful to your save data. There was a bunch of drama in the modding community with a certain hacker that would wrap items and give them away, and those items would get stuck in your inventory forever. But that was just one bad apple that wanted to ruin people's experience. Nowadays, there's no actual way for modded users to mess up your save data, and before we give away any items we ALWAYS test them out to make sure they're safe. Modding is so fun and I love seeing how excited people get when they get their favorite villager! Unfortunately, the "hacking police" ruined the fun with fake assumptions. So, long story short, star trees were cute and harmless, and now they're gone because "cheating bad 😡😡"... just let people have fun lol PS: loved the vid, you did a great job explaining the whole situation!!
@@Spider8itchy I'm not an actual "modder" in the usual sense, that's just another way to say hacker lol. I've been doing this ever since New Horizons came out, but I stopped streaming a good while ago. I guess the only reason I gave up was because of the toxicity in the modding community, and in turn I eventually grew tired of ACNH stuff. It's not as fun once you only do it for other people haha 🥲
@@frozenyogurth i just watched a couple of videos from several modders, it's not hard after you get the hang of it! the most annoying part is just having to update it frequently lol, if you wanna get into modding i recommend looking up "nh switch guide" !
IDK, I agree.if you wanna hack items in for yourself and whatnot go ahead. My ONLY concern "and even then I don't really care" any game with a ""player driven"" economy, meaning Nookazon/trading. Hacked items destroy a player driven economy. Or at least the games I have played that have a player driven economy get destroyed by hacking/duping... I guess I more just want an actual modder/dupers opinion on this, do you think dupers actually damage the economy? Do you think they just cause the economy to shift towards different items? Do you think dupers only want to damage the economy of greedier games?
They should have made it so Celeste gave you a star fragment seed that you can craft and she can warn you that it only grows a few times before it’s a normal tree. Like you take 5 star fragments to craft on tree but then it can grow for three days. The star fragments from the tress will be normal though. I wish Nintendo could have done something like this
fr!! they should also make a special shop where u can buy seeds for the other stuff that were on trees (like the wedding hearts) based on the seasons. like that would've been SO cool buf nah nintendo doesn't wanna give us that 😞😞
Totally! I could see it work like the old perfect fruit trees. After a certain amount of time you shook the trees, you would no longer get any perfect fruit and it would lose all of its leaves!
@@Marliemac I think that would be cool! and maybe Leif can sell different "seasonal saplings" where you get an acorn tree in the fall, a cupcake tree on your b-day, ect.
This reminds me of how many ppl in the community still try to say time travelling is "cheating". Now I understand that during the first year of the game when events were still new and being spoiled because ppl were time travelling to them and posting about it, obviously that's fair to be upset about because it's being spoiled however it was never "cheating". Did it ruin the fun for other ppl because they didn't get to experience the event before having it spoiled? Yes, but is time travelling as a whole cheating? No because you should be able to play the game how you wish (again, specifically talking about ppl who time travelled just because they wanted to and not to spoil events for other ppl). It's wild how ppl will find a way to turn something that effects almost no one into this big taboo thing, let ppl play the game however they want, if they want hacked fragment trees let them have them, if they want to time travel, let them do it, it literally doesn't affect you personally and especially not now when the games been out for 2 years
on the belltree, that was my issue; i didn't care about people time traveling to get items or build faster, etc., but i was definitely let down by seeing all the special event items way before we were supposed to. i play more leisurely, and i don't usually time travel unless there's something i absolutely have to do, so most of the items were spoiled for me the first year before nintendo implemented that failsafe to prevent it.
@@crunchii891 well if you try trading online then the people who play the game as Nintendo intended as their stuff they got is now a lot less valuable. So those people are very effected by time travelling. So it's not always victimless. But cheating in single player games is very much still possible. I didnt say it was a bad thing. If you want to skip days to move homes and stuff then I see no issue. I've done a lot of time travelling for stuff like moving all the houses or building inclines or even getting seasonal materials I've ran out of. So when I say its cheating I'm not saying don't do it. Its your game, do whatever.
I’m also in the camp that time traveling is cheating, here’s why - Animal crossing is and always has meant to be slow-paced, day by day gameplay. It is designed that way to encourage us to slow down, and it helps us feel a larger sense of achievement when we finish large projects. There’s a reason that the game is set on real time, vs accelerated time like Stardew Valley. You might not be harming other players, but you are cheating yourself out of the intended experience. - but, I have also time travelled in the past to complete builds and get seasonal DIY’s I missed in the past. I try not to, because time traveling in Animal Crossing New Leaf honestly ruined the animal crossing slow-paced relaxed experience for me. So, really, play however you want lol. It’s like other games - mother lode in the sims, old old game codes to give everything a big head. These things are harmless to other players and make things fun, but it is still cheating.
When I started my game, I got Marshal as one of my villagers. I didn't really want him at the time, so I went to Twitter to sell him. Someone messaged me very quickly and I got him into boxes for them and he moved out. Not 5 minutes later, someone else messaged me asking if I still had him. I said, "No, sorry, he's gone already!" and they literally cursed me out for having the audacity to give him to someone else. I ended up having to block this person because their messages were just extremely rude. The point I'm trying to make here is that yeah, the AC fandom kinda fuckin' sucks sometimes.
This is how I feel, some of these villagers sell for a lot and I don't really feel like selling them but I do understand the appeal if you're starting out and you're early in the game. But I think that freaking out over not getting a villager is pretty stupid. My wife literary made one of my favorite villagers move out and for a month to a year it was just the joke that they killed that villager and them laughing. But I would never actually be upset over at at her because she means more than any villager. Remember. People are worth more than pixels.
I was so lucky to get gayle for free, someone didn't want her ! I love reptiles so gayle was a must and they were so appreciative of me dropping off only 500 bells because I was broke :')
It’s kind of ironic since these are likely the same people who don’t want mean villagers back because they don’t want their feelings to be hurt by a cartoon cat
That fact that Versilify encouraged and actively hunted down people with Star fragment trees is just a whole other lever of petty I can't even begin to understand. How are u so miserable and bitter that something someone ELSE is doing with THEIR island is bothering you so much?? The star fragment trees were hurting NOBODY and yet he was acting like it was some serious issue. I have never seen a community so against hacking. Literally almost every other gaming community I have been apart of encouraged the shit out of hacks cuz it's fun! It adds another level of interest that people enjoy to watch or see. The fact that something as harmless as a simple tree hack is enough to piss so many people off is ridiculous. Im surprised he hasnt gone after people with the edge tree glitch or modded islands with how much of Nintendo's ass he loves to kiss
The hacked towns in New Leaf would have made them lose their minds. Messing around with the game is part of the fun for some people. Nintendo literally never cared until people began bothering them about hacks. They don't lose money because someone wants a tree with stars or bamboo in their rivers.
I wish we had actual in game wall shelves that functioned to put some of the smaller items on. Like I wanna hang a pot on the wall or the radio. Not place everything on tables.
I find it ironic that guy was and was also getting his followers to report islands using modded items as it broke Nintendo's terms of service when he himself who created or found that lewd Isabelle custom design and made it his island flag was also breaking the same Nintendo terms of service. What he did would be the same as someone who read the sign " No Shoes, No, Shirt, No Service" on a storefront and went in and started getting folks kicked out of the store for not having a shirt on, going online and commenting on how awful it is that folks are going into stores not wearing shirts, and encouraging all his followers to do the same, complain to store managers and staff and get the shirtless people removed; all while he himself entered stores and shopped barefoot. Again that guy who was up in arms over the modded trees and items that he saw on other peoples islands , was breaking the the same terms of service the folks modding or using modded items were; with the lewd/sexual in nature Isabelle custom design he had.
the difference between the animal crossing community vs the sims community when it comes to mods and cheating is wild! this was a super well constructed video btw
I mean, tbf, the Sims team actively supports modding the sim, with an in-game option to use cheats, while Nintendo actively discourages cheating, and treats it like a sin.
@@bluejay43 yup, I think this is exactly where the biggest difference lies. People don’t get backlash from modding the sims bc of how the dev team views/supports modding in the first place. If Nintendo wasn’t so strict with what you can or can’t do with your game, I’m sure more ppl would be, at the very least, indifferent to it
@@bluejay43 I thought about this literally after I sent this comment haha. The sims website even lists the cheat commands you can use and how to use them 😭
This is the honest truth, the more wholesome it looks the worse it is inside. You look at Sonic and you think oh that's just the thing about a guy who's got to go fast, then you step into the fandom and realize it's a war on who he gets with between a dozen different girls that he says hi to or this one girl who he hangs out with or this one girl who loves him. And then you get the people who talk about the ages and the relations and how weird it is. There's a lot of cute fandoms that if you step into it's absolutely terrifying. But the darkest one you can probably step into is The Loud House.
@@Topdoggie7 honestly i never looked at the sonic fandom as something "wholesome". it always seemed like, tweenager oriented, and those kind of things kind of attract weird people
As someone who's been kinda part of the Pokémon community for a long time, it sucks that that Pokétuber made his way to the ACNH community and ruined the fun here too
Same with Skyrim for me, albeit the genre is far from your average AC players preference. Although I've become addicted to modding before so it's always a slippery slope in how much you want to push the game. Which I think is fine. If you buy the game, play how you want. If it doesn't hurt anyone, who cares?
Sims 4 as well. I don’t think EA really encourages it but they tolerate it & don’t go to the extremes Nintendo does. I think Nintendo is just really stuck-up with the concept of modding in general, most other game & especially cosy games don’t really seem to care that much about modding.
People who get genuinely mad at other people for having fun with cheats, time traveling, and/or generally playing differently than the "norm" need to touch grass. It's a relaxing game with talking animals it's not that serious...
I do agree that people are allowed to play animal crossing however they want to, whether its through cheats, time travelling, etc etc. It doesn’t affect me any. What does rub me the wrong way though is how some of those same people have claimed that the game is “boring” or “bad” because they’ve so quickly exhausted themselves by trying to essentially complete everything as quickly as possible when that isn’t the way that the game is intended to be played. I can see why so many people would argue it’s already boring when they time travelled and would grind for 8 hours a day just to try and “finish” a game that isn’t really meant to ever be finished.
@@RedPandaNinja6886 Why do you care tho? Other people disliking the game for arbitrary and potentially stupid reasons still doesn't diminish your experience of the game in any way.

I think a big part of the reason they got rid of star trees was because people were charging real life money for them. In my opinion, half of the blame goes to the people who thought this was ok. I think the worst part is that this could have been immediately fixed if they just made the star trees into official items. They could have made it a diy you could get from Celest, require a tree, 3 star fragments and be customizable to be the star color you want.
@@vallyvk2009 Yeah, they've been gone for awhile now. It's too bad they felt they had to just get rid of them. They looked so cool and if they made them a legit item, it would've been one of my favorites.
I doubt it, you can buy villagers and amiibo cards with real world money and those have not been patched out. Nintendo has a stick up their butt about their games not being played the way they see as correct. In order to prevent "cheating" by resetting time to reset shops and force closing to undo decisions, they made Mr resetti and his long lectures. They only removed him from new horizon because they implemented an autosave feature. Also look at how they've sued sites for hosting emulators with Nintendo games, most of which host Nintendo games that aren't available to play anymore through Nintendo. I understand claiming that using an emulator would take away sales from Nintendo, but if Nintendo no long sells the console or the game anymore, why not let it be?
@xg223 lol, most PC games out there have mod support from the developers and run perfectly fine. Hell, you can use cheats through console commands in Sims if that's how you want to play. 🤷 I'd be more inclined to believe their call to quality if it were true. Countless complaints about joystick drift, rendering problems ("burn in" even though it's not burn in), and dropping frame rates when docked. On my own island on ACNH, I can play with no issues handheld, which unfortunately isn't comfortable for me to play like that. But once docked, multiple areas of my maps have framerate drops. And they are in areas that don't even have much going on in them! I was about to get Cozy Grove on the switch but saw complaints about the same issues: dropped frame rates and slow loading screens. And these problems will never get fixed because Nintendo knows they don't have to fix anything. People will pay for sub par consoles regardless because Nintendo refuses to port their favorite nostalgic games to other consoles or PC.
i really don’t get how people can start so much drama because of star trees. it was a cute little "cheat" (if you can call it a cheat) and it didn’t harm anyone. like i don’t have a modded island so i can’t get some features but i’m not gonna angrily go on modded islands’ dream adresses and report them. it’s just like people who claim that time travelling is cheating. we’re two years into the game and people are often restarting/flattening their islands, so yes, some people are gonna time travel because the beginning of the game is really slow and maybe they wanna start decorating sooner. does it harm anyone? no, and again, it’s been more than two years since ACNH has been release. i just think people should let others play however they want because animal crossing is about doing whatever your want, especially with how New Horizons is focused on designing and decorating your island. and ppl paid $60 to get this game, let them play how they want. other than that, it was such an interesting video! i didn’t know about the police youtuber tbh lol, and i kinda miss the star trees. i didn’t use them but they were really cute on people’s islands.
fr! i get that some hacks can be bad, but most hacks, especially in a slice of life game like acnh, are harmless. acnh is a very visual game, so most of the time, there's nothing wrong w modding stuff into the game that would help ur island look the way you want it to. to add on, i feel most of the people mad abt this stuff don't realize that you dont HAVE to get this modded stuff?? it's not like the modders are holding them at gunpoint and forcing them to get the modded items or else. if you don't like modded stuff, cool! that's fine! the modders don't gaf! just don't report shit when it's nothing bad! it's not hard to understand 🤦🤦🤦 but i guess most of those people just want to cause drama and hurt others on purpose. it sucks.
@@shineinstars exactly! ppl with modded islands just share cool stuff with their communities and there’s nothing wrong with that. i will never understand how the way someone is playing can bother them that much when it doesn’t have any effect on their own game. people are bitter and love to ruin fun things for others, which is really sad.

I worked graveyard shifts, 12 hour shifts sometimes 6 days per week in IT. I time traveled only to able to play and have shops open as I slept during the day. In my opinion, play the game however you like, it is your copy and you paid for the that right. Leave people to do their own thing, as long as it doesn't personally affect you, there's no need to be competitive over a non-competative game. People need to chill about it 😐.
I remember New Leaf had that online island thing, and how pretty much every server had a hacker, lol. Was actually very fun? Worst case tended to be that the server would shut itself down.
I think Nintendo really missed an opportunity with these trees. They should have taken this huge star fragment tree uprising and added it into the game. These totally could have had a place on the Kapin star fragment islands and made a really cool addition to the game. And, a few of the other trees were cool as well, like the heart crystal tree could have been given to the player from Reese and Cyrus if they played the whole month of wedding day, or when you receive the wand recipe from them. Same with the acorn trees, they could be similar to cherry blossom trees where they only appear during fall, and maybe they act similar to the fruit trees and grow back, and when you plant one, a new tree grows. And during other season like winter, the trees would grow like normal trees and only sprout acorns during the fall season Either way, before I started New Horizons, I saw a picture of the star fragment trees and got pretty excited about getting the game seeing that there was all these cool trees, even though I had no idea what was on them, they looked really cool and it would be nice if Nintendo added them.. (kinda no hope for that though)
@@randomcat1962 As if they probably didn't just piss Nintendo off. I promise that big company does not care about what people are doing so long as they aren't selling Nintendo goods. But then in comes genius over here to badger the crap out of them.
I've never understood how "cheating" and "Animal Crossing" can even be related, since it's literally a non-competitive game that's basically just a way to create digital art. It's just art. Can you "cheat" at painting? Yes...I use treasure islands. I prefer getting lots of items quickly and easily, rather than hoping every day that I'll finally get that decayed tree that I want so badly...or even using Nookazon to find a decent deal on one (which isn't even really possible without first using treasure islands to get massive amounts of bells and NMT's, anyway). Who cares? It's MY island. I'll create MY ART how I want.
It’s not about a game being competitive that warrants to word cheating. If you mod then what you’re doing is cheating. If you turn travel then I’d just say you aren’t legit is all. No one is stopping you from playing your little game that you bought.
It would be nice if there was a creative mode, where you can just design islands with no limits...and further customization tools to furnitures and plants, like changing shapes rather than just colour....Then people wouldnt be so angry against "immoral" playstyle?
I'd pay money for a creative mode-I want to go all out with my island, but it's a fixer-upper and I don't want to start over. HHP is the closest I've been able to get, but it's not the same.
@@wolfetteplays8894 Their right to free speech is only violated if the government arrests them for being a jackass. I don't see anyone asking for that.
I actually think Nintendo could make the Star trees a legitimate part of the game, for instance, what if you planted a star in the glow spot only during a meteor shower. It would make so many people happy.
I had star trees on my island as well as the cupcake trees and heart trees and they singlehandedly made my island like x1000 times prettier, they made me so happy. I was so angry when some asshole decided to start drama and report them. I think when modded trees were removed from the game it just made me bummed out and I stopped playing the game for a while XD But yeah I miss the trees so much, that's like the one thing I wish we could get back. I know some people were jealous of the trees, the people who couldn't get one and ofc the AC purists who don't believe in time traveling and even less modding. But it's so ridiculous, this game isn't competitive but people try to be competitive with others.
I remember on City Folk there was SO much controversy regarding the lightsabers modded into that game which could KO other players like bees did, plus a few other hacked items I've forgotten. On Wild World too, there was major controversy with Action Replay users as they could drop a whole Town Hall or Museum in your town, which wouldn't appear until you saved/a player left/entered your town and it saved, when it would be too late to do anything! Star trees seem so minor in comparison.
Yeah, the latter being called seeding. I’m so lucky to have never played Wild World online as a kid as that sounded like a real problem. But I did play City Folk, and in my experience the lightsaber items never KOd a player and were just another axe reskin (they also had a katana and K.K.’s guitar too)
As someone who is super lawful about not time traveling in my own game, I simply cannot imagine having beef with people who time travel! and I will say there for sureee was anti-hacking discourse even in the new leaf days, it was silly then and it's silly now ! And hey, thanks as always for a great, chill video! 🥰
yes!! i’ve always been strict about it in my own game but i just really couldn’t care less what other people do with their own islands. it’s their copy of the game, if they want to time travel or hack their game that’s up to them. plus things like the star fragment tree are pretty and it was actually quite nice to see people posting pictures of them on their islands.
Verlisify made me sooo pissed during the event of star fragment trees, He's was so annoying and would generally put out fake information about pokemon, and during 2020, I played both pokemon and animal crossing and it seemed he was unavoidable lmao..
Back when they werent patched, i made a new island DEDICATED to the star trees, i named it star grove, got all of the items from celestia, EVERYTHING. But once i found out some random guy got them patched, i actually cried.
I wasn’t huge on the star trees specifically, but I was ALL about the hacked plaza items, Harv’s fencing and oh my goodness, the camo items. There was a definite link between my reduction in playing and when they patched those items out.
We’ve been dealing with Verlis for years in the Pokémon community, thankfully he’s lost a lot of his influence over the past few years after he lost his Twitter which was his main outlet for bullying people. I think this is the last major controversy he’s been in, haven’t really heard much about him since.
@@itsflappletime He was apparently praising it at first until he remembered that he was supposed to hate the game. He also only played 2 or 3 hours of the game which is the slowest and worst part of PLA, it gets way better once you get past the tutorial.

When she mentioned a certain disliked drama stirrer I INSTANTLY knew somehow it'd be Verlisify 😹 hes renound for drama in so many different communities its insane
Imagine being a narc and starting drama for a multimillion dollar company who doesn’t care about you. N-do isn’t going give you a cookie for snitching on hacked islands lol. These game purists are nuts. N-do only cares about your money, just play the game how you wanna play it.
I was watching when abdallah was demonstrating the hacked item he received. The person who sent it to him specifically warned him NOT to place it on his island because it WILL ruin it. So he had to go to a mystery island and when he dropped it the whole thing exploded into multiple items and you couldn’t move through it or break them. It’s crazy to think if he had of done that on his main save it would have been ruined forever. It scared me into never ever accepting modded items. Even though I wanted star trees so badly 😂
this drama is so interesting me because the fact that people were baby raging over a cool looking tree is so astounding. it’s like when people got mad at others for time travelling.. people have been using time travel in animal crossing since the gamecube LOL
new leaf hacking was a lot more chill in my experience too. i think it mostly comes down to the fact that the modding scene really only popped up a few years later, the game came out in 2012/13 and hacked towns really became accessible around 2015 iirc - by then, i think most casual players had started to move on the new horizons community in general was a lot more unhinged than new leaf's ever was, so that combined with the hysteria around launch plus quarantine made everything into a bigger deal than it actually needed to be
as someone who bought the game when it came out, played for a couple of months and stopped bc i got too busy and am just returning to the game, these drama recap videos are so interesting to watch rn and i can imagine those who played the game and experienced the drama at the time are enjoying it even more !
For New Leaf, before the Amiibo Update, there was a exploited glitch/cheat you could do which was you had a net & did the sneak against the water or cliffs with or without the King Tut Mask (It was helpful since things like butterflies could be in those borders you can't access.) My friends showed me it for a game of Hide & Seek, did I try to actively try to find any other hacks or glitches honestly. However, when the Amiibo update came & I tried it, I discovered it was patched up. Never to be seen or heard again.
I don’t understand why people get so upset about how other people play a game that they payed for. No one is going anything to anyone by playing a game how they that that purchased with their money. People really can’t have shit in anything
Not the emotional store closing song playing during the “star trees were removed” part actually making me emotional 😅and weirdly nostalgic for something that happened not too long ago 😆
I love the star trees! Just never got them myself. Honestly I don't get why people get so upset about others timetravelling/having 'hacked' items, etc.. If you don't like it, don't do it yourself, but let others play the game in the way they like. It is not like my island gets impacted because someone else decided to have a star tree...
I think part of the reason the AC community can be so hostile to modders/hackers is that back in WW days there were problems with them ruining other people's towns. There were items that when dropped would spawn in things like the town hall or bridges. People would use them to do incredible decisions, but some others would use them to permanently ruin towns by removing access to important places. There were no dream addresses at the time either
@Charon the Toaster Yes. Brick seeds existed in New Horizons and grifters would deliberately mess with other people's towns to troll them. They kinda ruined the fun for a lot of people.
The only experience ive ever had with cheaters in AC was in new leaf, meeting people on the island who spat out massive stacks of perfect fruit, or just messed around with objects. It was always a fun treat to see what the cheater would do, and there was never any harm bc it was on the island.
A personal favorite of mine was to do trades with people and drop them a bunch of cool swag as a bonus and tell them I scammed them since I gave them more than they asked for. Then I’d run back to the airport and keep typing “you’ll never catch me”
It amazes me how intense the AC community gets sometimes! I’ve been playing ACNH since the day it dropped and um, I just got my 5 star island yesterday lmao. Just wasn’t a priority! Too busy catchin’ fish and stuff 😊
As an avid time traveler and someone who paid for Star trees, it was kind of sad to see them go. Mind you, i wasnt using them for anything other than aesthetic purposes. I used star trees outside Diana and Judy's homes, Heart ruby trees outside my favorite villsger's home, and even Fossil trees outside my museum. Hell, i had so many of them at a point, i was giving them away on reddit after doing trades at no extra cost--just to make sure others could have the joy of a star tree on their island for a time. Honestly, the anti "cheating" sentiment in the AC community was always something i saw as frivolous and silly to get mad over. Like, if it was a game like pokemon, cloning or duping pokemon is definitely a cheat, as that game has a competitive scene, and it makes sense to be agaisnt cheating in something like those games where making a perfect pokemon gives you an actual advantage in game. But Star trees? If you found those to be a cheat and or actively demonized others for using them like that one loser (we all know who I'm talking about...) thats kind of pathetic. Just let people enjoy their single player cozy island experience XD
I remember replying to your Twitter post for this video! I used to be super jealous of people with star fragment trees but the thought of taking them away from people is really sad. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you should take it away from someone.
I bought a hackable switch because I wanted the star trees so much, then they got patched out LITERALLY the next day. I feel like I jinxed myself haha. I'm happy that there's plenty of modded items now though!
I don’t understand… it’s a mother freaking game let people play how they wanna play, like if you think time traveling is cheating, then DONT. It’s that simple. Worry about your own game and not others, people.
This whole video was so nostalgic. I can’t believe how dramatic it was/felt at the time! I’m honestly shocked nintendo didn’t decide to add star fragment trees in the 2.0 update.
🤔 somewhere in the last 3-5 minutes of this video, I had the thought process of "if they decided to use the Money Tree as a replacement for the Star Trees, they could have just added it in to be made the same way... toss the star fragment you want into a glowing hole and boom, Star Tree. Wouldn't even have to make a shake-able tree, they could have made it be purely aesthetic. This wouldn't be particularly "OP" as the Money Tree is also a fairly timely process itself even with time traveling... such a missed opportunity."
Animal crossing is supposed to be what you make it, that’s the whole point. I can’t mod star trees on my island but I think they’re kool as heck! I love seeing them. How about instead of being mad about what you can’t do focus on what you can. Personally, I just love seeing creative islands and getting ideas from other people that I wouldn’t have thought of.
ah the good old days when verlisify had me in several of his videos... incredible. I remember when star fragment trees were removed I invited a twitch streamer to my island for an event where we held a funeral for them, that was fun
i had a hacked 3ds and there was definitely people who had problems with it in New Leaf days. you weren’t allowed to discuss hacking in a lot of communities because it was a heated topic/the mods of the communities didn’t want you telling other people how to hack. literally didn’t even do the hacked trees either lol! i hacked in items for other people and did free giveaways. i honestly do believe that it does ruin the game for yourself if you try to hack in everything and anything (esp money). but that also depends on how you play the game.
I wish they added star fragment trees to the Kappn mystery island tours on the star fragment isles. Like seriously, it would have been so thematically appropriate.
I've been playing animal crossing since Wild World. And i've enjoyed all of it since the beginning as well as watching the community build up into how popular it is today. But it's become so toxic that i barely do anything with my community because of something as "Controversial" As star fragment tree's. I myself had a ton of star fragment tree's on my island and enjoyed the aesthetic they gave to my small "Garden" At the time. But being as Verlisify was going around and having his fanbase report islands, one of them found mine and had my island off the Dream Suite, and i even got a cute little email from nintendo because i violated TOS. Verlisify, who was banned from the OFFICIAL Pokemon discord channel, had absolutely no right doing this since he as well, hacked his pokemon game and stuff. Cheating in YOUR game has nothing to do with everyone else, as like you said, you're not competing in some cute aesthetic competition. It's PLAYER-Made. Not COMMUNITY-Made islands. And people who get pissed off at hacked islands somewhat make me laugh because they're that concerned about someone elses island looking/being better than theirs that they feel they have to have people mass report the islands. They don't understand how it feels on the receiving end of those reports. An island they work so hard for getting pushed off the Dream Suite because of star fragment tree's. Notice how majority of the AC community was so for star fragment tree's and the minority of them hating them because they couldn't get them. Not being able to get the tree's is basically what stemmed down to the whole drama of the different types of tree's. Because I didn't notice one person talking about all the other hacked tree's there were. I agree with the large amount of people who said they should've been added in. Instead of just patching them out, give us somewhat of a percentage when we plant a dang star frag tree to grow on our island instead of getting rid of it. Nintendo has never listened to us for anything we've ever asked, and have gone back on their promise for 3 years worth of content for the game. Adding a DLC was a bonus, but if you think about it, nobody plays the game anymore because it's still a shell. To this day i still go back to ACNL because it gave me more content than NH did.
i never got the chance to get star trees on my island, id have loved to have some around my glowing moss field. also, im awake at night! i work nights! if i never changed the time on my switch id only get to visit the shops and such on the weekend, assuming im not busy going to REAL stores during the weekend. and the amount of times ive had big, entire-island-redesigning projects, im supposed to just be fine with only moving one bridge a day? to hell with that. my island, my rules!
I feel like star fragment trees should be an actual part of the game like if you got a certain amount of star fragments that one would pop up on your island
i imagine the issue most people had with star trees is that it was not possible for anyone to get them in a legit way. like not through the game itself. if there was a way to get them without hacks or the animal crossing black market, but instead through some kind of like “endgame” situation or something, maybe less people would have been upset and not feeing left out?
It’s so strange because I always felt like the community was much more open to hacks and mods in the new leaf era. It shocked me when this drama happened because a lot of people didn’t really gaf back in the day.
I wanted so badly to have star trees, but acnh was my first game ever. I was a guest on my partner’s switch and he was too afraid of corrupting the game/console, understandably so. I wish we still had them.
Thats Not the animal crossing Community. That were all the new Players. We Always Made some Kind of Hacks in Animal Crossing. But in the new Game everything quickly escalated. Also time travelling was a Thing we Always did since the First Animal Crossing.
I'm so happy this video exists to document the craziness of the star tree "drama". I wish that Nintendo considered adding them as a real item. Great video!
Modding increases the longevity of a game. So anyone who genuinely loves a game, whether you can mod or not should embrace modding. It allows people to do exactly what they want with their game and gets more people excited about the game. I also thought the whole “time traveling is cheating” thing was really dumb. I had a bunch of friend who were like “i don’t want to time travel, I want to enjoy the game slowly as it was intended.” None of them and I mean none of them still played the game past the first or second update. The only people I see still playing the game are time travelers who like decorating. Our attention spans are way too short now to be able to play a game slowly and for long term. I think being able to time travel is just another feature that increases the longevity. So with things like this that help improve the game, I just don’t understand why certain people like that RUclipsr felt the need to be the fun police and go on a snitching campaign
I remember when I was really little, my older sister went out with her friends to get ice cream, and when she came home with ice cream I threw a fit because I wanted ice cream too, and I didn't get any. "it's not fair" was my only argument. now I see that it is fair, she left the house, and spent her own money on something she wanted, and I didn't. simple as that. if You want to have nice things, You gotta earn them. That's how I feel about star trees. If you go through the trouble of modding your console, you're taking a risk. If you choose to take risks, you reap the consequences, good or bad. You succeed, you deserve to look at your twinkly trees. If you fail, and you don't back up your save I mean god forbid but whatever happens happens.
I didn’t even know the star trees existed until people we’re talking about online, but I do agree that it shouldn’t matter what your island is or what theme it is as long you like it, then it’s just as fine if someone has a higher rated island
As an AC fan, thank you so much for documenting this and other documentaries for the foreseeable future Also blessed choice for including songs from old games as background. It'd be appreciated if you could also list the songs you've used during the video for other users. I try to list what non-NH songs I can pick up: 2:41 ACNL 5 PM 5:11 ACWW 2 AM 12:06 ACNL 1 PM 17:29 ACNL 1 AM
I remember very vividly that the so called creator you mentioned did tried to get my 8 year old sister banned from animal crossing permanently, he mass reported her island and even went as far as to harass on discord and RUclips telling her to k111 herself and even worse, sent her address to her small discord server
I remember looking up and visiting hacked new leaf dream towns, and I thought they were so very cool! I actually wanted my own to be like that and loved to experiment with glitches such as the one where you walked very slowly with a net and could clip through the fence of the railroad. Then I'd walk up and down it, go on the forbidden bridge, trains would clip through me, and I got so much fun and joy out of that. Oh and the king tut's mask with holes around you and tripping into the river! When I visited someones island and they had other people over, and they'd push each other into the river while the person used either a tweeter or beans, it blew my little kid mind. Good memories :)
As someone who actually emerges originally from the New Leaf community, I really don’t get the stigma around not letting people mod, hack and have fun with their own games! Including time travel! It was only when New Horizons came around that it started to be looked down on and I never understood why! I personally utilized glitches from New Leaf’s bugginess to get more money, and also borrowed hacked fruit baskets from a hacker to make easy bells, both of which never had a bad impact on my experience with the game at all. The other content it offered kept me occupied. So I wonder why it’s so common now to rule over the experiences of others?
another reason someone may time travel: they are terrified of spiders and they time travel back a few hours so they don't have to deal with the big ones
i dont think "cheating" should be a thing in animal crossing. it's just a chill life sim/decoration game, i don't think time travelling or modding should be considered "cheating"...
I feel like time travel is "cheating" at the start of release. The first month i feel like it is best for the community to play the game as intended, so that there's not this huge difference between time travellers and non-time travellers and we can enjoy the game and admire peoples dedication to creating the game. It also helps with motivation as you're not flooded with unachievable images online from timetravelers, or spoilers from future events. But after that initial month it's free for all. Time travel, mod, hack, glitch, cheese, i don't really care. That's when i want to see "how far can we take this".
Instead of removing star fragment trees Nintendo should have done the opposite and added them in. They could have showed up after shooting star events the same way tree eggs show up during Easter. That way everyone can get them, vanilla and hacked, online and offline.
But Nintendo is against their consumers or some shit so that’ll never happen
i actually have seen them on nook miles ticket islands! the entire island was at night and had star fragments all around
@@zrockhawaii really??
@@giadaa I second this. I never saw one but I could swear a star tree island was a thing in the very beginning

@@cupidkissez No I know about the NPC and the badges, I played ACNL, I just didn't know there was one for time-travelling.

To me, "cheating" implies that someone else will have a worse experience as a consequence. But that isn't the case here. People are only affecting their own islands, so honestly, what is the harm? 🤷
Or causing the company or creator/s to loose money on their game otherwise
That's exactly why people have issues with ACTUAL cheating! Great explanation
Ikr, it’s like getting mad at someone for using mods in minecraft for their own world. It harms nobody at all 💀

I’m so glad I was gifted 2 of them… I just put them at the front of my island… I loved them and when the update happened I was devastated
As someone who came to this game from the sims, the AC community's weird stance on modding/hacking never quite made sense to me. Imagine how many cool things we could do in this game if AC fans, as well as nintendo themselves, encouraged the existence of a robust modding and custom content community.
i completely understand nintendo's stance, but players being so against it are weird
Exactly! Large modding communities add so much life to a game

So, long story short, star trees were cute and harmless, and now they're gone because "cheating bad 😡😡"... just let people have fun lol
PS: loved the vid, you did a great job explaining the whole situation!!
What kind of mods do you make? And how long have you done it? Anywhere I can see it? :O
How did you learn to mod AcNH? Honestly, I've dabbled in programming before and modding my games honestly sounds really fun
I wish Nintendo could have done something like this
fr!! they should also make a special shop where u can buy seeds for the other stuff that were on trees (like the wedding hearts) based on the seasons. like that would've been SO cool buf nah nintendo doesn't wanna give us that 😞😞
that would be so amazing. especially for 2.0. I would have loved that.

It is cheating though.
Its fine If you want to do it. No big deal.
But it is cheating.
@@moritzmonaghan9421 but who is getting cheated?? Cause I’d like to know
@@crunchii891 well if you try trading online then the people who play the game as Nintendo intended as their stuff they got is now a lot less valuable.
The AC fandom is full of moronic teenagers thinking they're morally superior to everyone else.
a petty level that makes me cringe so bad are people like that
That fact that Versilify encouraged and actively hunted down people with Star fragment trees is just a whole other lever of petty I can't even begin to understand.

I just wish we could put wall hung items in the trees and on cliffs. Imagine the starry garland in trees 🥺

YES! I'm in both communities and the difference is absurd
@@bluejay43 yup, I think this is exactly where the biggest difference lies. People don’t get backlash from modding the sims bc of how the dev team views/supports modding in the first place. The more “wholesome” a fandom or someone pushes themselves as is ALMOST ALWAYS a red flag for them being insane and mean as hell
As someone who's been kinda part of the Pokémon community for a long time, it sucks that that Pokétuber made his way to the ACNH community and ruined the fun here too
This is why I stick to stardew valley, modding is encouraged and everyone shares aesthetic mods and seeing people's farms is so cute.
Stardew Valley is like 3rd or 4th on Nexus Mod's top games list
Same with Skyrim for me, albeit the genre is far from your average AC players preference. Although I've become addicted to modding before so it's always a slippery slope in how much you want to push the game. Which I think is fine. If you buy the game, play how you want. If it doesn't hurt anyone, who cares?
ConcernedApe even makes his newer stardew valley updates EASIER for modders to mod. stardew valley fan for LIFE
Sims 4 as well.

Wait they got rid of star trees?? I haven’t played in a long time and this news is so sad to me :(
@@vallyvk2009 Yeah, they've been gone for awhile now. It's too bad they felt they had to just get rid of them. They looked so cool and if they made them a legit item, it would've been one of my favorites.
@@animefan1047 I really liked them
I doubt it, you can buy villagers and amiibo cards with real world money and those have not been patched out.
I'd be more inclined to believe their call to quality if it were true.
@@Daaisies exactly!! like ive gotten tons of cool stuff from modded treasure islands before, which has honestly made the game fun again. now i can focus on decorating rather than feeling discouraged bc of how messy my island was !! but yah, the ppl who report r truly just bitter, miserable ppl who wanna ruin stuff for others 😒 it's so annoying
People need to chill about it 😐.
people who complained about them for sure wouldn’t have survived new leaf
Oh absolutely
I remember New Leaf had that online island thing, and how pretty much every server had a hacker, lol. Was actually very fun? Worst case tended to be that the server would shut itself down.
LMAO they hacked new leaf like crazy. My fav one was when people would place items in the middle of the river (before terraforming!!!)
The great battle of Fort Newleaf
And during other season like winter, the trees would grow like normal trees and only sprout acorns during the fall season
Either way, before I started New Horizons, I saw a picture of the star fragment trees and got pretty excited about getting the game seeing that there was all these cool trees, even though I had no idea what was on them, they looked really cool and it would be nice if Nintendo added them.. (kinda no hope for that though)

I hate that dude he is a shit starter.
I really wish Nintendo would’ve added these in the 2.0 update. I don’t think they cared until they started getting spammed with dream address reports.

Star trees and heart trees should be added, and so should cupcake trees, and Nintendo could call them "Birthday Trees" or something.

But I did play City Folk, and in my experience the lightsaber items never KOd a player and were just another axe reskin (they also had a katana and K.K.’s guitar too)
Wild World was pretty fun online.
As someone who is super lawful about not time traveling in my own game, I simply cannot imagine having beef with people who time travel! and I will say there for sureee was anti-hacking discourse even in the new leaf days, it was silly then and it's silly now ! yes!! i’ve always been strict about it in my own game but i just really couldn’t care less what other people do with their own islands. it’s their copy of the game, if they want to time travel or hack their game that’s up to them. plus things like the star fragment tree are pretty and it was actually quite nice to see people posting pictures of them on their islands.
Verlisify made me sooo pissed during the event of star fragment trees, He's was so annoying and would generally put out fake information about pokemon, and during 2020, I played both pokemon and animal crossing and it seemed he was unavoidable lmao..
i lOVE when you make deep-dive content like this -- it's so well researched and presented

I mean a lot of this controversy started from a youtuber who has been very infamously anti hacking in the pokemon youtube community.
Even though I wanted star trees so badly 😂
this drama is so interesting me because the fact that people were baby raging over a cool looking tree is so astounding. it’s like when people got mad at others for time travelling.. people have been using time travel in animal crossing since the gamecube LOL
new leaf hacking was a lot more chill in my experience too. i think it mostly comes down to the fact that the modding scene really only popped up a few years later, the game came out in 2012/13 and hacked towns really became accessible around 2015 iirc - by then, i think most casual players had started to move on
the new horizons community in general was a lot more unhinged than new leaf's ever was, so that combined with the hysteria around launch plus quarantine made everything into a bigger deal than it actually needed to be
Omg I didn’t play ACNH at this time but having pinecone and acorn trees would be AMAZING

For New Leaf, before the Amiibo Update, there was a exploited glitch/cheat you could do which was you had a net & did the sneak against the water or cliffs with or without the King Tut Mask (It was helpful since things like butterflies could be in those borders you can't access.)
My friends showed me it for a game of Hide & Seek, did I try to actively try to find any other hacks or glitches honestly.
Too busy catchin’ fish and stuff 😊
omg i remember star trees!! i always wanted them but i didn’t have online at the time. but i completely agree on what you said!! 💓
“The hacking police” sent me LOL
This whole video was so nostalgic. I can’t believe how dramatic it was/felt at the time! I’m honestly shocked nintendo didn’t decide to add star fragment trees in the 2.0 update.
@@consolecaito I wish I hadn’t read some of the comments. Honestlly. Why make such a cute game so toxic? I’m glad I found your side of the community.
I love how I was able to recognize Verlisify from a single sentence
i had a hacked 3ds and there was definitely people who had problems with it in New Leaf days. you weren’t allowed to discuss hacking in a lot of communities because it was a heated topic/the mods of the communities didn’t want you telling other people how to hack. literally didn’t even do the hacked trees either lol! i hacked in items for other people and did free giveaways. i honestly do believe that it does ruin the game for yourself if you try to hack in everything and anything (esp money). but that also depends on how you play the game.
Some people like to feel like a God because they don't have a sense of control in their lives.
"and don't be a f'ing cop" 🤣BEST LINE EVER!❤ RIP star fragment trees. 😿
I never managed to get a star tree before I stopped playing. I was trying real hard to get star shards and decorate yards at the time
I feel like star fragment trees should be an actual part of the game like if you got a certain amount of star fragments that one would pop up on your island
I didn’t expect to hear about verlisify but I immediately knew who you were referring to even before the song 🤣
i imagine the issue most people had with star trees is that it was not possible for anyone to get them in a legit way. like not through the game itself. if there was a way to get them without hacks or the animal crossing black market, but instead through some kind of like “endgame” situation or something, maybe less people would have been upset and not feeing left out?
Saying Time traveling/Modding Animal Crossing is "Cheating" is like saying that Minecraft's Creative Mode is cheating. lol.
I feel like the next Animal Crossing game should have these as a base game feature. SO smart
My wrist is so stupid it managed to anger two communities at once

Your first sentence is why I still hear about skyrim
ACNH attracted a lot of players who have an envy problem.
I really like the star trees. I wish they did add them to the game like maybe on super rare star fragment island. That would be awesome
I didn’t even know verlisify did that but as soon as you said Pokémon I knew who it was. Truly the Onision of the Nintendo community.
I didn’t even know the star trees existed until people we’re talking about online, but I do agree that it shouldn’t matter what your island is or what theme it is as long you like it, then it’s just as fine if someone has a higher rated island
The fact that it's 2022 and your video goes for 20:22 is great.

That’s embarrassing that people got upset over trees like really embarrassing 💀
