So well presented and all in under 10 minutes - the script says it all. This excellent video highlights the tragedy that can be the result of the scourge of Fame in far too many stars.
Karen's experience with her mother is one where the mother is actually competitive with the new female offspring and will go to some lengths to destroy her life. My late wife had this happen and I lost a friend a few weeks ago in her early '60s whose mother did some diabolical things to her as a child. When I heard the news Karen had passed, I wasn't aware at the time of the parental interference; I felt grief instantly when I heard. I bought at least two Carpenters albums in the '70s for my young family, played them more than any other records we had.
I loved Karen's voice and have albums of theCarpenters. I could cry when I listen to her sing. They don't have wonderful songs like this anymore. So sad.
Thanks Tim. I thought I knew music for the last 50 years until I dove into Carpenters music and realized that Carpenters (Karen Carpenter) were the music I was always yearning for. Her voice IMHO with her drumming are something to behold.
I grew up with their music, my mom was a big fan and always playing their records on the stereo. I did not appreciate their music much back then, I was into rock music. But until this day, I can still sing every song from the Carpenters perfectly (because my Mom played them so much) and now really cherish those old songs.
The Carpenters were successful in spite of the fact that their work and image did not really fit into their era. I liked them as a kid but turned against them when I entered my teen years in the late 70s, because they seemed so uncool. It wasn't until the late 90s that I realized how silly I had been. The quality of their music cannot be denied.
Because of karen, eating disorders were given a face & treatment centers were created. Renfrew was the first and i was a patient there. I wish the treatment i had was available for karen. I still am saddened that she didn't make it. People don't realize that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of mental disorders - even higher than depression. May others find healing. Don't give up!
@@timsincere sadly, her passing is all too common. May my recovery give hope. Thanks for your comment & your beautiful video. May you get many more views
When John Lennon saw Karen Carpenter in a restaurant in LA and complemented her on her beautiful voice (as was mentioned in this video), she was so insecure and unsure of herself that she questioned the people she was with whether he really meant it or was just joking. So sad; he did mean it and she did have a wonderful voice.
@Tim Sincere. Yes, I was born on March 2, 1950 at 10 minutes to 5 in the morning. I don't know her time of birth that day. Ironic since I find her voice and ability to be my favorite.
I grew up in Downey and Richard and Karen would drive by my house quite often... always big smiles and waves... really nice people! The hospital in Downey where I was born is now an duplex Apartment called Close to You and We've only just begun 🙋 Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school CA ✌️
I am a rocker, always have been. But I have to say the Carpenters, of my generation, were amazingly talented and some of the finest musicians and singers ever. John Lennon truly appreciated them and as mentioned he came upon her in passing at a restaurant and told Karen in person how good she was, which I understand blew her away a bit. They recorded a couple of his songs, I believe Ticket to Ride was the first and then Help. Anyhow, love and enjoy listening to their songs. So good. And Karen was a fantastic drummer.
In concert I always had front row,or 2nd,,and to see her hold that Mike and sing it was like she was just talking,,no big effort, soothing, not a yeller like many,,she was so calm.
I miss her so much. She had a great unique voice and when interviewed a very warm personality. I never heard one song by her which I did not enjoy everyone was a masterpiece. We miss you Karen and it will be no one else like you I met your brother Richard carry on the work that you started
My favorite Carpenter's song would have to be on top of the world and we only just begun. It's hard to pick a favorite because they all are. Pick up a copy on CD of the Carpenters CD called the singles every song of masterpiece
She was a remarkable woman she had a beautiful voice I wish I could have met her in person years ago God bless her her rest in peace she will always be long God bless you baby❤❤❤❤
Inter-generational trauma. Parents with unresolved childhood trauma then having children, and like a copy-machine they start to impose onto their children, the same treatment they endured during their crappy childhood. For a mother to display obvious favoritism to one of two children suggests NPD - Narcissistic Personality Disorder. They take pleasure in scapegoating a selected child, they enjoy emotionally disturbing them, it has echoes of sadism, enjoyment in the suffering of others. Karens mother disturbed her self esteem so deeply that Karen destroyed herself trying to feel like she was enough or lovable. Who wouldnt love their own child, let alone Karen Carpenter as a daughter? Holy Christ!
@@timsincere Yeah, I never met her, but I lived only blocks away from her in the city of Downey in southern California for some years. The 'delivery' of a song (which you mentioned) can surpass it's lyrics; and given the right accompanying music, which her brother was stellar at doing, make an otherwise another simply forgotten piece, into an undeniable classic.
Every time I hear and see her. I weep...what could have been. All she wanted was to be loved...and appreciated. Read Little Girl Blue...it says it all. What a voice.
It least Karen and Richard left us with some beautiful music to play. Their last few albums in particular are favorites of mine. The material was maturing as they entered middle adulthood.
It doesn't matter how many hits they created, the quality of her voice is astonishing. Listen to her voice control, how she tells the story using the lyrics, and how easy it is to listen to. I will never tire of listening to her voice.
What a WONDERFUL SINGER!! Her voice was like silk!! I was 18 yrs old in 1969. Her hit songs were always playing on my car radio...nice and loud (I turned down all my car windows.) Singing along while driving home from school. Those really were Happy Days.. the best years of my life. Nancy Schans

thank ou for the nice lookback and insight into once of the finest singing duo ever. Such a tragedy that Karen felt unloved, etc.She could have had a million guys wanting her to be happy. But that doesn't seem to work in life.
Being a bit to young, the Carpenters always move me in such a way that I just wish I could go back. Life was simpler, didn't feel like everything was slipping away, and music was real and beautiful. To bad we can't, so hopefully we will make the future better then today, with nice people, with bigger smiles and maybe a bit of peace and understanding towards each other.
Great insight into one of the most beautiful singers ever. Karen’s voice was so wonderfully pure and always perfectly in key. The world lost someone very special when she unfortunately passed away. R.I.P 🙏
Seems like "only yesterday" & she's gone 40 years. Thanks for the memories. Glad people are still thinking of her & putting new insights out there for a whole different generation to view. If only they had left her stay with the drums. It's what she wanted more than singing. Things may have turned out differently....
We miss her so much. Richard is one of the most underrated musicians of all time. It's a shame that Karen's incredible, impeccable musicianship is only truly appreciated now with analyzing everything she did. Thanks for this video to help continue the legacy.

Karen Carpenter was an amazing singer and a sweet person too,she left us too soon, but her hearty voice will keep singing inside our hearts!
She will live forever. As long as her music is still getting played. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
Whenever I hear Karen Carpenter sing I feel safe and feel like everything is going to be ok.
Wonderfully stated.
God bless her sweet soul.

I had such a crush on karen ... dark hair big brown eyes gorgeous smile all the things a 12 year old boy needs ... she was my queen
Karen's gentle voice was somehow soothingly reassuring.

Such incredible talent. A voice for the ages.

Listened to the Carpenters growing up. I still have several of their albums from the 70's. She has an amazing voice.

She had problems before, but this must have been an ultimate betrayal of her love...
We’ve Only Just Begun. My wedding song. I adored the Carpenter’s.
Nice. What a great song to have played at your wedding. 💍
Hands-down, the greatest pop singer of all time

Unutterably tragic.
Thanks a lot for your work. It is the most beautiful tribute I have seen to these great musicians. Cheers!!!!
Why are all the best taken so soon? Whenever I hear her voice it takes my breath away.
Goodbye to Love is one of my Carpenters favorites. I wish I was born a decade earlier to have enjoyed them during the 1970's.
One of the most stunning voices ever
She had me from why, the very first word in their fist single hit; "Close to you"!
Me too!

Tony Peluso that great guitar solo :)
Not bad, eh Melvyn?
All those other alto singers added up still wouldn't equal the vocal talent Karen Carpenter possessed.
They dressed Karen is the most uncomplimentary fashions anyone could imagine. Any managed her by forcing her away from her happy place at the drums.
Outside of opera singers, Karen was the best vocalist for several generations.
HOW HOW HOW HOW Can the Carpenters NOT be in the Rock-N-Roll HOF?????!!!! SUCH BS!!!
