I saw Karen and her brother in concert back in 1972 when I was in the Marine Corps. I was right next to the stage. They sounded just like their records. No fake auto tunes or synthesizers just pure talent.

One of the most beautiful things I loved about The Carpenders was the harmonies in their songs. This is why I do so many harmonies in my songs because as a little girl, listening to their songs, I fell in love with the harmonies as well as Karen's voice and the songs they sing!

Such a tragic and needless loss! A couple of lessons that come from this: 1) Love yourself, no matter what. Sure, we all need to try and stay healthy, but not everyone is meant to be the same body type. Some people are naturally thin, others are meant to be a thicker build. All that's really important is that you are healthy. 2) Parents, never miss an opportunity to tell your children you love them. There's some indication that verbal affirmation was lacking in the Carpenter's parental household, and that's truly sad. We all need to hear that we're loved now and then.

In my day in the 70s, The Carpenters were at their zenith. Sadly, the critics were very harsh on them; and one of the reasons is because they had a clean image. During that time, hard rock, and even acid rock were BIG while The Carpenters music was sadly openly despised by people of their age group. The Carpenters were appreciated by an older group; and now, they are appreciated by many people who were ashamed to admit that they enjoyed the Carpenters music. What caught my ear was the Crocker Bank commercial where Paul Williams sang "We've Only Just Begun" - I enjoyed the sound of that song. When Richard heard that song, he quickly got in touch with Paul Williams, and that song became an all-time hit. Many people even today use that song at their weddings. I was working at Chevron USA in El Segundo, California when I heard the news of the death of Karen on February 04, 1983... that was a sad day. I was an Olivia Newton-John fan at that time, and Olivia and Karen were friends. The day that Karen died happened to be a day when the two were going to spend time with each other. When Olivia died on August 08, 2022 - that was another sad day. I am glad that Richard is still doing his music, and he also released a new album on January of 2022. He still uses Karen's voice in his music. He on different occasions mentioned that Karen's voice was/is: TIMELESS. I agree. He also just released a book about their music from his point of view: he still has a somewhat bitter taste against those critics that haunted them during their zenith. They did not receive the STAR in Hollywood until after Karen's death: very sad. I appreciate The Carpenters; and I would put Karen as my number 01 female vocalist of all time: Olivia, number 03. My number 02 is still alive at this moment (08/22/2022): Linda Ronstadt. Peace.

As great as she was, Karen was held back from attaining that individual recognition she truly deserved. When A&M and her brother panned her solo album, it no doubt demoralized her, accelerating her personal demise. The fact that it was released years after her death containing what could have been several chartable songs while she was alive proved they were wrong in their decision.

I know we want celebs to be perfect but they really aren’t. Some have endured unspeakable abuse. Looking at Karen’s anorexia and depression issues I tend to think she had something bad happened to her. She seemed like a lovely lady. At least now she’s not suffering anymore.

There were rumors of Richard abusing Karen and the parents knew and did nothing about it. People who lived near them talked about what an odd family dynamic they had going on there. I get tired of putting Karen in a box as the sad lonely clown. She was actually the opposite. She had friends that loved her.
About mother Agnes and not loving Karen. I believe Agnes did love Karen, but not the way Karen thought love was. It would be nice to go and see what Agnes was going through when she was young. Maybe Agnes’s parents weren’t as loving to her. Maybe Agnes’s family, put boys higher then girls. We will never know.

Fortunately, Richard is a great archivist, so anything that was destroyed in the Universal Records fire had been backed up in his own private collection.

You candy coated so much, that I don't know where to start.
You completely left out how her Mother refuses to give her love or recognition, That it was Richard's mother that gave him her Quaaludes and started his addiction, It was Richard who called all the shots and thus contributed to her anorexia.
She died from Ipecac poisoning which dissolved your heart muscle. It's on her autopsy report. It was Richard that prevented the release of her solo album which devastated his already weak and sick sister.
He only released it after her death after cannibalizing it to make the Lovelines album to grab a quick buck.
It has since sold over 100,000 copies proving it was a good album, he just couldn't take credit for it.
When The Karen Carpenter Story was being made the Mother-Son duo was on set demanding the script be rewritten to not cast them in the light of the truth of how poorly they treated Karen.
I hope you make a much more truthful follow-up to your candy-coated episode.
You've added insult to injury to Karen's memory and her lifetime of injustice by her family.
