I saw Karen and her brother in concert back in 1972 when I was in the Marine Corps. I was right next to the stage. They sounded just like their records. No fake auto tunes or synthesizers just pure talent.
One of the most beautiful things I loved about The Carpenders was the harmonies in their songs. This is why I do so many harmonies in my songs because as a little girl, listening to their songs, I fell in love with the harmonies as well as Karen's voice and the songs they sing!
I loved her voice n each single they released. I was heartbroken when she passed. I love classic rock n blues....but I loved the carpenters. I have a special place in my heart for Karen, sadly it will never be filled. Like millions, I loved her truly.
I have 2 favorite songs…. "Make believe it's the 1st time".. their last recording together and "SING" from Sesame Street. We would play that for our children when they were small.
She lived an innocent life--she never had a real true great relationship with any boyfriend. Her marriage was a disaster from day one--there was no love.
Such a tragic and needless loss! A couple of lessons that come from this: 1) Love yourself, no matter what. Sure, we all need to try and stay healthy, but not everyone is meant to be the same body type. Some people are naturally thin, others are meant to be a thicker build. All that's really important is that you are healthy. 2) Parents, never miss an opportunity to tell your children you love them. There's some indication that verbal affirmation was lacking in the Carpenter's parental household, and that's truly sad. We all need to hear that we're loved now and then.
I knew about Karen's troubles but never knew Richard had problems too. I always thought he was squeaky clean and a qualude addiction is also shocking. However, they made beautiful music together.
Karen didn’t & never will fade away … she died But her memory & songs will live for ever Thank you Richard Thank you A&M But Thank you mostly to you Karen
My favorite by Karen Carpenter is "Only Yesterday", my wife's (who actually sings and sounds much like Karen) is "Superstar". We missed out on so many songs by them. And yes, she had THE BEST voice in the history of music.
All of there songs. She was the best singer ever. I seen them on TV a lot back in 70’s and sadly when she lost a lot of weight . She is very missed, Michael.
When I was six years old the first Carpenter song I heard on the radio was close to you and about a week later when I heard that song on the radio my second sister bought the album close to you in the summer of 1970 and my sister bought me the 45 single of close to you and it wasn’t the single edited it was the fall version of the song from the 45! I know that Karen Carpenter is very much alive and us whenever we hear the Carpenters magical music every day!
"It's after years and years of practice, and a case of really bad knees. While the other guys were out playing with the football, I was home banging on the keys." Richard Carpenter in "Piano Picker", from "A Song For You"
I walked down the aisle with “Close to You”. Very untraditional but it was a much better song to me for my wedding than the ‘Wedding March” would have been.
🤔 I think there's more to this story about Karen and her brother... Her voice was BEAUTIFUL! Smooth. She had great command of her vocal range. She was definitely one of a like, who will never be replaced.
In my day in the 70s, The Carpenters were at their zenith. Sadly, the critics were very harsh on them; and one of the reasons is because they had a clean image. During that time, hard rock, and even acid rock were BIG while The Carpenters music was sadly openly despised by people of their age group. The Carpenters were appreciated by an older group; and now, they are appreciated by many people who were ashamed to admit that they enjoyed the Carpenters music. What caught my ear was the Crocker Bank commercial where Paul Williams sang "We've Only Just Begun" - I enjoyed the sound of that song. When Richard heard that song, he quickly got in touch with Paul Williams, and that song became an all-time hit. Many people even today use that song at their weddings. I was working at Chevron USA in El Segundo, California when I heard the news of the death of Karen on February 04, 1983... that was a sad day. I was an Olivia Newton-John fan at that time, and Olivia and Karen were friends. The day that Karen died happened to be a day when the two were going to spend time with each other. When Olivia died on August 08, 2022 - that was another sad day. I am glad that Richard is still doing his music, and he also released a new album on January of 2022. He still uses Karen's voice in his music. He on different occasions mentioned that Karen's voice was/is: TIMELESS. I agree. He also just released a book about their music from his point of view: he still has a somewhat bitter taste against those critics that haunted them during their zenith. They did not receive the STAR in Hollywood until after Karen's death: very sad. I appreciate The Carpenters; and I would put Karen as my number 01 female vocalist of all time: Olivia, number 03. My number 02 is still alive at this moment (08/22/2022): Linda Ronstadt. Peace.
I loved the Carpenters ever since they started to perform. I wanted to sing like Karen. Everytime, a new song was released, I went and bought those records.
As great as she was, Karen was held back from attaining that individual recognition she truly deserved. When A&M and her brother panned her solo album, it no doubt demoralized her, accelerating her personal demise. The fact that it was released years after her death containing what could have been several chartable songs while she was alive proved they were wrong in their decision.
What made it worse, Richard altered the original recordings. What you hear on her solo album is NOT what Karen and producer Phil Ramone, had intended. She was controlled by both her mother AND brother
I love you in a place where there's no space or time, I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine, and when my life is over, remember that we were together...We were alone and I was singing this song for you......
Love everything of the carpenters if crushed me to see Karen pass Away and I will forever love and remember and listen to the carpenters music much to Richard who is a legacy
It's hard to believe it's been almost 40 years since Karen Carpenter's untimely death. At that time (late 70s and early 80s) eating disorders like anorexia weren't well known or even discussed. For that reason, I guess we can thank Karen Carpenter for the fact that eating disorders are more discussed and well known now.
Si, es la mejor voz de la historia, Paul mccartney lo dijo distintiva, melodíosa y única, la mejor voz del mundo. Nadie se acerca a la voz de Karen, es realmente como un arcoiris 😊
I’ve heard some rumors that there was a lot of abuse in the family, especially of Karen as Richard was considered the golden child. It gets much darker, from what I’ve heard, but if true, it explains her anorexia and his drug abuse. Such a sad life and a tragic end for someone with the voice of an Angel. RIP Karen.
