In my humble opinion, Karen Carpenter's "Merry Christmas, Darling" is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever recorded. I bought the album in the early '70s and played it often; I am not ashamed to say that listening to this song still makes me cry, even after all these years. Her death, and the circumstances that surrounded it, still resonates and gives this song a poignancy it didn't have upon its conception. She left for us the gift of her voice and for that I am grateful.
I'm with you on that Gary. I remember loving the Carpenters from the very first time I heard them in '69, '70, but I don't think we really knew what a perfect voice Karen had until now. What a treasure. Some can even make me cry.
My father, mother ,and brother died within 2 years. This was my dads favorite singer and I was decorating the house for Christmas. I walked into the house and this song was playing and I started to cry knowing my dad mom and brother were there with me and this song was their Christmas wish to me. I have been crying a lot this Christmas but there is hope I will see them once again beyond the golden gates. I love you mom, dad, and Kenny!
Aw! The pain of losing loved ones never goes away. I know as I lost my mother's youngest sister not even 6-7 years ago and then her father a few years later. I miss them both so much!
I know exactly how you feel. My dad passed Dec. 12. Oldest brother passed Dec 23 and mom passed Jan 15. And to top it off Mom and Dad had the same birth date, just 6 years apart, Dec. 22. When we were kids my brothers and I thought every ones parents had the same birthday. LOL Gone much too soon. RIP mom, dad and bro. ❤🌹
A timeless Christmas classic! Nobody who has ever sung could have done it like Karen! She was and is what I consider an absolute NATIONAL TREASURE! Incomparable!
I'm 29 years old and I can't deny the beauty of the carpenters. This music is from a time when you actually needed talent to be a musician. Just letting the older folks know that young people can enjoy pure art just like them :)
@Gidget Praying for you. Our Lord is the great physician. Merry Christmas to you and your family from my family in Arizona. Hopefully, you will be blessed with good health and be home with your family soon.
Being 64 I remember hearing this for the first time on the radio in the car, I couldn't believe that a Christmas song could be so beautiful. Being a huge Carpenters fan from the beginning, Karen's voice made my heart just stop! And, the ending arrangement, I just said Richard has done it again! What an angelic sound! Classic! Now, this is what superb music looks and sounds like. If this doesn't move your very soul, something is wrong! RIP to one of the greatest voices of all time!!
There will NEVER be a voice that can move one to tears as Karen Carpenter did for so many years. She truly possessed the voice of an angel, and is still so dearly missed...
This is the first year I’ve had the joy of listening to this gem. It’s ironic because I’m away from my love this year. I sent this to him and it made us both feel better. Beautiful voice she has ❤️

I share the sentiments, David. My mother often spoke about one of the Carpenter girls coming to our small town in Ohio and how she chummed around with her. Fond memories.
My two favorite Carpenters songs are A Song For You, and I Won’t Last A Day Without You. I’m not sure who wrote the words to these two beautiful songs, but nobody but Karen Carpenter could have sung them with such feeling, and sincerity.
This was my mom's favorite Christmas song. My dad passed in 04' and I'd watch her sit alone and listen this and sing this to herself every holiday. She passed in 2023.

My fiancé was in Vietnam the Christmas this song came out and I will never forget the first time I heard it! Karen, I miss you so much!
I was 13 years old when this song was released and it's always been all the more poignant for me, as I still can remember the young women, like yourself, whose boyfriends/husbands/fiances were fighting over in Vietnam and would call WFIL AM in Philadelphia (some in tears) requesting this song. They would tape it on their old tape recorders and send the tape to their "loves" overseas, along with their Christmas cards and letters. I often wonder how many of those couples were able to reunite and go on to enjoy many years, and memories, together...
This Christmas song is a classic that will be enjoyed by all for many decades, if not centuries. Only Karen Carpenter could provide the soul and silky smooth voice we hear in this song. You can't help but to just keep hitting the repeat button to hear it again, over and over. But let's not forget the man who wrote this song and her brother, Richard Carpenter, who so skillfully composed this gem. I also credit the background chorus for giving this song a heavenly flavor. Especially at the end of the video as Karen places the package in the mailbox....the chorus is ON POINT! This is just a brilliant piece of work by all involved in its creation.
I'm 70 years old, and was hooked on this song the very 1st time her Christmas Special aired this. It's now a tradition with me that I MUST hear it at least twice during Christmas week, and everytime.. EVERYTIME.... I'm a slobering mess afterwards. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
I'm a mid Gen X kid that grew up playing Carpenter songs in middle school band most notably "Merry Christmas Darling". Karen has one of the greatest voices of all time, hands down. So soothing and pleasant to listen to. Hearing this song reminds me of Christmas at any time of the year. A classic song that will live on forever. It's April 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic is in full swing around the world with no end in sight yet. I hope I will be able to look back at this comment some day and reflect on how things were back in the good ol' days of the 70s & 80s versus the present.
This is my favorite Xmas song sung by my favorite female vocalist of all time! I miss Karen very much. I remember hearing Close to You for the first time and thinking these guys have got it! Thanks Karen and Richard for so many great songs and great memories thru the years!! Byron Peters
Indeed!! It's heart breaking to think that, even her cold-hearted mother did not recognize that fact, until the world heard, Karen's true story and how Agnes was largely the cause of her demise...
@@finnsmom8470 you are correct. I saw the movie years ago and read the book Little Girl Blue. Such a sad life for her even though she was such a success in music.
My mum passed away 4 years ago at the age of 45 she loved karen carpenter and every year I hear this song it warms my heart with all my childhood memories with my mum ❤
This song came out when my boyfriend was in Vietnam. Every time for years when I heard it that time came rushing back. He is gone now and my husband had also passed so this song which is my favorite Christmas song make me smile and cry at the same time. Rest in Peace Karen Carpenter and thank you for the gift of your music
I still think of this as a "new" Christmas song. It's now 50 years old, at least from its release as a 45. As a big (and now old) Karen Carpenter fan, it's my favorite Christmas song.
Yes, she was a spokes person for the hospital I use to work at in Cerritos California not far from Downey where she lived. I just cant get enough of this song. Probably the best song they ever did. Peace and Love
So sad, she was really a sweetheart and having the problems she had brought on the short life she lived. I agree with you and I would see this all the time where I worked. So many women and so much pain. I would hurt for them so much and would try to tell them they were beautiful and I cared about them as a person. What a shame. I did my best.
@@eds3969 you mean christmas song. christians hijacked the pagan seasonal celebration. Jesus was born around Easter, not in December, and Jesus was definitely NOT WHITE. facts matter.
@Jake Spur. There are religious and non religious Christmas songs. I’m saying this is the best non religious Christmas song. I’m not sure it’s better than “O Holy Night”. Everything you wrote is completely irrelevant to the point.
OMG, this is one of my MOST favorite songs by "The Carpenters!" The moment I hear that "A minor 7th" chord at the beginning...I get all CHOCKED UP INSIDE because I know EXACTLY what tune is being played. This song ALWAYS brings me in the Christmas spirit. Plus every word that she sang was enunciated VERY clearly and I could understand EVERYTHING she was singing and what the song meant. They'll NEVER be another voice like hers. I'll ALWAYS hold a place in my heart for her music.
The nostalgia ever in childhood is the memories in xmas, when family are completely celebrating xmas before... but now so lonely my sister and mother is gone and xmas is not the same anymore... we lost our home in fire last year dec 22, 2022... all the memories in our home is completely gone...😢😢😢 i don't know what is the feeling of celebrating this coming xmas year 2023.. when all you have is missing the old timesss😢😢😢😢... i miss you sis and mom in heaven... i just want to bring back all the old good daysss
Karen was amazing. Not only could she play the drums without any lessons or training from anyone, but she had a beautiful voice. It was a shame that she had to pass away so young. I won't ever forget her music, however.
Karen I loved you so much! It's really a shame you couldn't get help. I'll remember you always. It's really sad when I play your Christmas Tape. Anyway Merry Christmas in Heaven Karen! May all your Christmases be white!
I listen to this song every year around this time, Karen Carpenter had the best female vocal voice of all time. Her voice is so unique and beautiful. I live about 20 minutes from Downey California, where Karen collapsed. I visit the street in Downey where that happened and always remember her beautiful voice while playing this song. 😔
One of the finest voices I've ever heard. I grew with their music at the height of their rise to stardom . I miss them .....and their sound. Karen's early death was a huge loss. God rest her.
You are right. This song will never get old because it is timeless. Great songs like this usually are. This song in particular touches the heart. It is beautiful. Karen's vocals are so amazing. RIP.
This song will never grow old by Karen Carpenter. One of the best Christmas songs ever. Sung. And it will still be playing long after all of us that are hearing it are all gone
The lyrics were written in 1944 by Frank Pooler while thinking about a love interest. Late 60's, Karen and Richard were looking for new Christmas music; Frank gave them his lyrics. Richard wrote the musical accompaniment in 15 minutes. The 7" single was released in 1970, and went to #1 on the charts. Nothing like an unrequited love story to bring tears to your eyes.
Captures the essence of my Love for my College Sweetheart...still occasionally dream of us together after 53 years of parting...I went off to serve my country...
I think this song could apply to a husband or wife in the service, children that are not close, people who have passed away, a lot of different scenarios.
Karen and Richard met Pooler during their time at csulb. I have loved the carpenters for such a long time and just learned today that they went to my uni😭
OK, but what you hear here is not that 1970 recording. Karen thought she could do better and what you are hearing here is a redo that she did several years later after she realized this was going to be a Christmas Classic.
This beautiful christmas song i’ve been singing since i was a kid and after 50 yrs i still love this song i can really feel the spirit in this song happy, joyful and sadness at the same time- a magical captivating piece!❤️🎄🎅🏻
+Arizona Paul i think one of the reasons not many people have covered this song is because they know they can't match it, leave alone do better. carnie wilson covered it, and i respect her for that, but it's awful.

The voice of an angel. Such clarity, such beauty. My most favorite Christmas song tied with the late Nancy Wilson's rendition of the Christmas Waltz. I feel sad whenever I hear Karen Carpenter's voice because she was such a beautiful person but I don' t think she saw how beautiful she was in every way to the world. I tear up whenever I hear her voice.
Karen was so unique and one of a kind. Her phrasing is perfection. Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with us. We are blessed. You brought a lot of joy to the world. RIP angel!!
This song reminds me of my grandpa. He would sing it every year around Christmas time for as long as I can remember. R.I.P. Karen Carpenter. Merry Christmas darling!
Amen! There has been no one else like her since the world lost this beautiful lady with the unbelievably soulful and lovely voice. We miss you, Karen! Still remember the day you left this world. It coincided with another memorably sad moment in my life. Such a sad day.
agree! the most beautiful, rich, intimate moving voice i have ever heard and will ever hear... her voice IS love, romance and christmas! the epitome of the singer who sang TO YOU and ONLY FOR YOU NOT AT YOU!..no one told the story of a song better and her phrasing and emoting and PERFECT diction and enunciation for every syllable for every word in every song she ever sang makes her the best!...
I vow to listen to this angelic voice at least once a year usually during the holiday season, truly hard to fathom that Karen Carpenter has been gone from this earth almost as long as she spent living on it, her impact on the music world will never, ever be forgotten and her silky, smooth, voice will never be duplicated, rest in eternal peace, Karen

Richard and Karen are the background chorus.
@@monilaninetynine3811 Richard's music professor wrote the lyrics and had RIchard put it to music.
Amen
Not least of all the TV stdio crew. Don't overlook them.
Karen and Richard are the background chorus
I'm 70 years old, and was hooked on this song the very 1st time her Christmas Special aired this. It's now a tradition with me that I MUST hear it at least twice during Christmas week, and everytime.. EVERYTIME.... I'm a slobering mess afterwards. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL
The best voice ever, Peace to your soul Karen.
The voice of an angel 💕💖💕
+Jim Maslowski amen!!
I adored her it makes me so sad that she let this earth way to early. There will never be a voice like that.
with a voice like that you could be positive that there is a god above
I loved Merry Christmas Darling .. .
I also love her singing Little Altar Boy very much!
Listen to it sometime!

Oh the 70’s were divine! Much better than now.
It’s impossible to listen to this song in December 2020 without crying.
Spot on. A lot of us can relate to that comment 😢

I cry every time
😥 I thought I was the only one
I cry everytime!!! This song gets to me everytime
Always my favorite Christmas Carol !
She was exactly what an angel sounds like
Karen Carpenter had a voice of an angel.
Karen is the lead singer for singing all the Christmas songs in heaven with all the angels of course!
She sure did have a voice like an Angel and no one will ever sing merry christmas Darling the way she did
Indeed
My mum passed away 4 years ago at the age of 45 she loved karen carpenter and every year I hear this song it warms my heart with all my childhood memories with my mum ❤
I sorry about ur Mom but I know listening to this song make the Memories beautiful….🙏🏽💜🙏🏽
Thats a lovely memory Emma
I'm so sorry for your loss. She was so young. I lost both of my parents when I was in my 20's
❤️

Beautiful song and voice . Gone too soon..RIP❤❤
This song always gives me chills, and a tear.
It did it again as always. When I think of THE CARPENTERS I always go to RUclips and pull up this clip. Maybe a 100 times
yes
This lady had such a beautiful distinctive voice, very few female singers can match her, she was amazing ! RIP Karen
Fr! I'd like to see jimmy Fallon would have the singers tru and do Karen!
This is what “flawless” sounds like
Wow ✨✨✨
Ric, this is what unparalleled PERFECTION sounds like!
All you have to say is karen
@@johngraham5543 you won’t get an argument from me!
As a big (and now old) Karen Carpenter fan, it's my favorite Christmas song.
...I had the pleasure of meeting and hugging Karen in 1975. I wish that I could hug her again. Merry Christmas beautiful angel.
Yes, she was a spokes person for the hospital I use to work at in Cerritos California not far from Downey where she lived. I just cant get enough of this song. Probably the best song they ever did. Peace and Love
Larry Diggs lucky you i blame all those who told her she was TOO FAT when she was young for her dying but that is just my opinion
So sad, she was really a sweetheart and having the problems she had brought on the short life she lived. I agree with you and I would see this all the time where I worked. So many women and so much pain. I would hurt for them so much and would try to tell them they were beautiful and I cared about them as a person. What a shame. I did my best.
good for you sadly society and the media promote THAT SKINNY IMAGE that most people can't live up to
Blame it all on Madison Ave...
This song will never ever get old. Thank you Karen Carpenter for sharing your talent to us all.
Christmas is not Christmas without this classic!
Arguably the best Christmas song ever.
Certainly it’s arguably the best secular Christmas song ever.
For me, no argument. 🎤😇🎶
Sad song though
@@eds3969 you mean christmas song. christians hijacked the pagan seasonal celebration. Jesus was born around Easter, not in December, and Jesus was definitely NOT WHITE. facts matter.
@Jake Spur. There are religious and non religious Christmas songs. I’m saying this is the best non religious Christmas song. I’m not sure it’s better than “O Holy Night”. Everything you wrote is completely irrelevant to the point.
I get teary when I hear this on the radio, so much memories. driving in the car at night when I was a kid, hearing this put me to sleep
Anytime her/their songs come on I stop what I'm doing and listen to reminiscence.
Me too! This song is beautiful!
I used to always hear this on the radio at Christmastime but now I don’t anymore.
Me too, this music reminds me of my dad
Voz pura de angel, ninguna voz como la de ella
OMG, this is one of my MOST favorite songs by "The Carpenters!" The moment I hear that "A minor 7th" chord at the beginning...I get all CHOCKED UP INSIDE because I know EXACTLY what tune is being played. This song ALWAYS brings me in the Christmas spirit. Plus every word that she sang was enunciated VERY clearly and I could understand EVERYTHING she was singing and what the song meant. They'll NEVER be another voice like hers. I'll ALWAYS hold a place in my heart for her music.
A minor seventh
The nostalgia ever in childhood is the memories in xmas, when family are completely celebrating xmas before... but now so lonely my sister and mother is gone and xmas is not the same anymore... we lost our home in fire last year dec 22, 2022... all the memories in our home is completely gone...😢😢😢 i don't know what is the feeling of celebrating this coming xmas year 2023.. when all you have is missing the old timesss😢😢😢😢... i miss you sis and mom in heaven... i just want to bring back all the old good daysss
This is the most beautiful Christmas song I ever heard! Karen Carpenters voice simply is amazing!
Karen Carpenter voice is simply BEAUTIFUL
Karen was amazing. Not only could she play the drums without any lessons or training from anyone, but she had a beautiful voice. It was a shame that she had to pass away so young. I won't ever forget her music, however.
Epic Tempo she had training she started in the school band
Is this old music
Karen I loved you so much! It's really a shame you couldn't get help. I'll remember you always. It's really sad when I play your Christmas Tape. Anyway Merry Christmas in Heaven Karen! May all your Christmases be white!
Beautiful song and that voice so breathtaking beautiful.! ❤ Love and miss you Karen so much.!!!😢💓💓💓💓🙏💕
I don't know what it is about this song, but I just love it. Her voice is heavenly.
That's true & it's a shame she died so young
I wish she was still around
Its just so sublime and understated
wazz proven! only 2 voices has this --effect; Karen and englebert humperdinck
Merry Christmas, my Darling Mother. I wish I was "Christmasing"with you. RIP.

Deborah martel Yes she did.
I listen to this song every year around this time,
Karen Carpenter had the best female vocal voice of all time.
Her voice is so unique and beautiful.
I live about 20 minutes from Downey California,
where Karen collapsed.
I visit the street in Downey where that happened and always remember her beautiful voice while playing this song. 😔
One of the finest voices I've ever heard. I grew with their music at the height of their rise to stardom . I miss them .....and their sound.
Karen's early death was a huge loss. God rest her.
Karen is My Favorite Singer of all Time.....Her Death broke My Heart .....May God Bless Her, May She RIP Amen
If you are a baby boomer, this had to have been one of the songs that gladdened your heart and filled you with joy.
It still does after hearing it hundreds, if not thousands, of times.
Or, as much as you loved it, it made you so sad to not be with the person you loved on the holiday. I think it's my favorite sad song ever.

I’m astonished it was many years ago that this was made. I just love hearing this. It will never get old
You are right. This song will never get old because it is timeless. Great songs like this usually are. This song in particular touches the heart. It is beautiful. Karen's vocals are so amazing. RIP.
a hauntingly beautiful voice
Her background vocals are as heavenly as her vocal tracking. She was and till this day still is an amazing artist. R.I.P beautiful
IRT Unionport Are you aware that Karen and Richard did most of the background vocals for her songs?
One of my favorite Christmas songs. Karen's voice is so beautiful. Sad she left us at such a young age. Rest in peace!

+Kaylyn Madahbee This too is one of the best Christmas songs written in the modern era. Karen sang this like no other person ever could. I love it.
+Arizona Paul i think one of the reasons not many people have covered this song is because they know they can't match it, leave alone do better. carnie wilson covered it, and i respect her for that, but it's awful.
The most beautiful Christmas song of all time! The way she sings and the way she delivers her melody makes a man happy!
Merry Christmas Richard Carpenter! You are loved as well my friend!

One of the most beautiful voices ever.
That voice! You just want to hug her.
The Carpenters have the best Christmas album hands down. ❤️
Karen was so unique and one of a kind. Her phrasing is perfection. Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with us. We are blessed. You brought a lot of joy to the world. RIP angel!!

She is singing in heaven right now...this very same tune!!
agree! the most beautiful, rich, intimate moving voice i have ever heard and will ever hear... her voice IS love, romance and christmas! the epitome of the singer who sang TO YOU and ONLY FOR YOU NOT AT YOU!..no one told the story of a song better and her phrasing and emoting and PERFECT diction and enunciation for every syllable for every word in every song she ever sang makes her the best!...
That is why every other time i hear this its an orchastra
I vow to listen to this angelic voice at least once a year usually during the holiday season, truly hard to fathom that Karen Carpenter has been gone from this earth almost as long as she spent living on it, her impact on the music world will never, ever be forgotten and her silky, smooth, voice will never be duplicated, rest in eternal peace, Karen
Beautifully said! I miss Karen's Music terribly.
