    Intermittent Fasting: Does Drinking Coffee Boost Benefits? - Thomas DeLauer… Does black coffee break your fast? Does it eradicate all the benefits that you would normally get from fasting when you have that single cup of joe? I'm going to break it down in this video, I'm going to give you some food for thought when it comes down to what you're truly trying to get out of your fast.
    All right, let's get down to the science for a minute. So when you look at coffee, we have to really understand what we're trying to get from both coffee but also what we're trying to get out of our fast. We know that coffee can induce some kind of fat-burning effects. We also know that fasting can induce all kinds of fat-burning effects, but we have to look at when they work together and when they don't. You see, if you are fasting because you're trying to completely abstain from food and beverages altogether, then it's pretty simple, it's pretty cut and dry, no, you shouldn't have coffee, but if you're trying to fast because you're looking for metabolic effect and the autophagy effects which is where you basically recycle cells and consolidate cells, then actually, coffee can be very beneficial for you. I'm going to help you understand in this video.
    When we look at fasting, we have to look at the two key benefits that most of us are probably seeking out. One is fat loss. Fasting boosts fat loss via the production of catecholamines, adrenaline, noradrenaline, epinephrine, stimulating what is called hormone sensitive lipase. Basically it turns on fat burning at the cellular and hormonal level, but additionally fasting has a huge benefit when it comes down to autophagy. I sound like a broken record because you've probably heard me talk about this in other videos, but autophagy is simply where the body recycles cells. If we have old cells that are kind of decrepit and not doing a good job anymore, stronger cells are going to go through and they're going to eat those cells and they're going to consolidate and become one stronger cell. Basically autophagy when you're in a fuel-deprived state encourages cells to get stronger by getting rid of the weaker ones.
    All right, this sounds like a great thing, right? Guess what? Coffee has now been shown to boost autophagy, even when you're not fasting. Let's break this down a little bit. Autophagy requires what is called the inhibition of mammalian target of rapamycin, also known as mTOR. What mTOR is is a very anabolic pathway, and I don't want you to freak out when I say that we need to reduce mTOR. It does not mean that you're going to lose your muscle. Autophagy by definition is not anabolic, so anabolic means you're building muscle. It means you're growing, it means cells are growing. Literally by definition, autophagy is the breakdown and the recycling and the consolidation of cells. In no way, shape or form could that ever be construed as anabolic, so don't freak out. Anyway, I'm going to make some sense of all of this.
    There is a study that was published in The Journal Cell Cycle and it took a look at two different groups. These two different groups were given either caffeinated coffee or decaffeinated coffee and they wanted to measure what would happen to autophagy after the consumption of either decaf or caffeinated coffee. Guess what? After one to four hours of consuming the coffee, decaf or not, there was a massive increase in autophagy. That means the level of autophagosomes had increased, producing more of a cell recycling effect, after any kind of coffee.
    What they've found is that the polyphenols in either decaf or regular initiate the inhibition of mTOR. This inhibition of mTOR is what allows us to start autophagy, so we turn off the anabolic system temporarily so that the cells can recycle and do their job.

    Guys, by experimenting with intermittent fasting I have lost just over 55 pounds in the past 10 months. I've been lifting weights for a few years, but I was "fluffy". As of December 2017 I was 253 pounds. Now I'm 196, just as strong, but much more lean and MUCH happier. I didn't realize how much fat I actually needed to lose. Intermittent fasting has been working super well for me!

      @@jamessao5767 hey! So I work night shift so my daily work week schedule looks like this: I wake up around 4pm. Immediately I drink a tall (16oz) glass of cold water. Then I make some coffee if I feel that I need it. No cream or sugar of any kind, just black coffee. I typically end up at the gym around 5:15pm. I always start with a 10 minute warm up. Some days I walk on the treadmill on an incline other days I ride an exercise bike. Nothing crazy, just getting my heart rate up and warming up my joints. Then I lift weights. Typical body building split so I have a chest day, leg day, back day, and then I add in a day for circuits. My circuits include box jumps, 60 seconds on the jump rope, 12 push ups, 20 kettle bell swings, 12 goblet squats, then 2 minutes of rest. I do that as many times as possible! But after my workout, I shower and go to work. I get there around 8pm, then I have my first meal of the day. I then eat "lunch" with my coworkers around 1:30am. Then I get home and go to bed around 8:30am. So I go to bed a bit hungry. So I suppose I fast from 1:30am to 4pm. Not anything super scientific, but fasting and avoiding fast food is really key. It takes awhile to get used to lifting weights and working out while fasted so take it easy at first. It will take some time before you feel good while doing it. I hope that helps!

    THANKS so much for this! Dr Rhonda Patrick says the opposite, that black coffee breaks the fast and initiates the feeding window. When I heard that, it screwed everything up. I had started intermittent fasting, drinking a cup of coffee about 6: 30-7 am and then eating between noon and 8 pm, and it was pretty easy, my body adjusted quickly and I didn't really get hungry, and even though I was mainly fasting for autophagy, the weight started melting off rather effortlessly. Then I heard a video by Dr Rhonda Patrick in which she stated, regarding autophagy fasting, "The most common mistake that people make is that they think they can drink black coffee during the fasting period, a cup of coffee starts your eating window." Argggh!!!! That messed everything up! I tried postponing my coffee till noon but that didn't work, I need my coffee! I tried moving up my eating window till early morning, even though I am not hungry at that time, that didn't work either. She totally screwed up my regimen, that had been working wonderfully! You are my savior! I want you to be right, and not her! Whom should I really believe, though? I have a tiny doubt in my mind because she is so smart about other things. Please convince her to recant so that the doubts are gone!

    This is such good news! Thank you Thomas for sharing this valuable piece of information. Coffee is what made my transition to fasting tolerable. It really takes the edge off the hunger. I have lost a total of 100 lbs (going from 230 lbs to 130 lbs). The first 65 lbs of weight loss was done using a low carb diet, eating with the same meal frequency as your average person. Then I got stuck there, without any movement on the scale for about 8 months, and it was only by incorporating intermittent fasting that I was able to lose the remaining 35 lbs. Black coffee was crucial for me to get through that transition period, and, from my own experience, it never slowed down the additional weight loss benefits I got from fasting.

      Rock Heiland, Thanks. To answer your question, I am pretty short for a guy. I am only 5'6". So, based on the BMI, I am at a healthy weight, just on the lower half of the healthy range. I plan to start lifting weights, and put back some of that weight as muscle. I aimed for such a low weight target deliberately because I have a strong family history of diabetes, and so my reasoning went that the leaner I am, the further away I would be from being at a weight that would put me at risk for the disease.

I did that for about two months. I a lost about 15 lbs of 35 remaining pounds I had to lose. Then I finally switched to an OMAD (One Meal A Day) eating schedule every day, which allowed me to lose the remaining 20 lbs. OMAD is what I practice now, every day. This has allowed me to stay leaner now, as a 41 year old man, than when I was an athletic teenager.

    Before you go coffee frenzy consider something only few experts are willing to recognize: coffee (and really any stimulant) does increase “cell cycles”, however consider that you only have so many cell cycles in your lifetime. You might be getting a burst of feel good, but could be increasing overall aging. Just something to remember that the more linear and controlled your diet is the more longevity you induce.
    Also doesn’t coffee have harsh acids for the stomach?

I've tried keto and that's not for me. I saw faster results but having to plan and think about what I COULD eat was annoying. I just drink water, black coffee, green tea. Every now and then I'll do apple cidar vinegar with lemon. I still eat whatever I want from time to time. I just watch the calories I intake and eat one of two meals a day (depends on my fasting break)... still lost weight and I BARELY workout.

    Good topic about fasting.
    I like the fact Thomas made sure the definition of his fasting was not relating to religious fasting. Another fasting, not needed to be mentioned, was blood test fasting. Everybody knows, by now, that medical fasting refers to only water consumption for 12 consecutive hours before laboratory blood work (testing), if medical practitioner doesn't specifically mention length of time of water fasting.
    I want to talk about religious fasting in this thread I created, though.
    In my religion there is two types of dietary fasting:
    1) no meats, grease, cheese and poultry eggs, but seafood is allowed;
    2) The same as #1, but even stricter dietary fast that omits seafood and all oils.
    At a young age I viewed the fasting as a religious rule. But, as I learned more about science, I understood the benefits of each for specific purposes, and then I self-prescribed certain fasting as required by my own self-disciplined health routine. I also understood the science behind some biblical passages better, rather than as a "do as I say" passage.

      I have a topic idea for Thomas:
      Hunger strike consequences, or extreme dieting effect on pancreas (if topic hasn't been addressed already).
      A Serbian warlord, Vojislav Seselj, explained that his overweight issue was spurred by the result of political hunger strikes when he was younger that altered his pancreas' hormone level release points; ie. his insulin was released at a much lower serum glucose level than prior to political hunger strikes, which got worse from his judicial hunger strikes, while at The Hague for the illegal ICTY.

      Sal Carvo Rhonda talks about cyclic eating vs intermittent fasting - cyclic eating is usually less time, 12-14 hrs fast, but much stricter with only allowing water. IF is usually much longer, up 24/48/72 hrs but is not as strict - allows coffee... it’s a bit more complex than that but in a nutshell that’s it.

Or can I have my eating window say after the training session so while im training- M-tor remains lower like you said, then after i train-feed up and up-regulate it, would the benefits of M-tor on muscle building be comparable either way? love your videos especially on Boron! always well done

    • @kmax7163
      @kmax7163 6 лет назад

      I'd say plan your biggest chunks of fasting around work out time.
      For example of what I'm meaning.
      My workouts are 8:45 pm until 11pm. When I get home I make a protein drink; no flavors, no sweeteners, etc. I sleep and wake up 9am. So that's 8 hours of fast right there. Then I eat at 2 or 3 or 4 or 5....depending....but I rather go to gym on an empty stomach. This way I can burn thru any sugars in me. Then I start all over again; gym 8:45 etc. Through the day though I'm taking in mineral and vitamin supplements I feel my body is in need of, and when I do eat a meal, I take in a big variety of good stuff.
      I'm not Tom but I hope ya don't mind me answering. Ivwoukdnt go to gym whike digesting food. It takes away blood supply from muscle tissue, and yer body won't dig in there and start burning any fat for fuel. I go to gym on an empty tank.

    • @haydenw6799
      @haydenw6799 6 лет назад +1

      thanks for the reply dude! my question still stands though cause im wondering about specifically m-tor. although everything you said is true except the blood supply thing,there is no less/lack of blood supply to the muscles while digesting is taking place- that is a myth. Layne Norton breaks that one down- he also talks about some circumstances where the body is burning a few LESS calories throughout the day if training is done fasted, so as much as you are tapping into those stores at the time. chances are your body is getting used to it and becoming more calorie "efficient" because of it over time- if you do it to the extreme and frequently Your body goes into a brief "efficient calorie mode" if you train hard enough and are fasted while doing it.
      If my memory serves me correct i remember him discussing a study in which participants who have their first meal in the afternoon and who work/ workout prior to that- and measuring there base metabolic rate at the end of the day and they burned on average 500 calories less than they SHOULD have. i think he mentions it on a JR podcast too.
      you should research how SUMO's eat its interesting.. obviously they are not resticting calories but these guys schedule is wake up and train 6 hours FASTED then first meal-nap-meal-nap-meal-bedtime lol I still need to learn more so much out there

      @@haydenw6799 About blood use / going where needed.
      Don't overlook the autonomic nervous system, especially the fight or flight & the resting (digesting) states. In fight or flight, which is related to stressing muscle tissues during intense workouts, blood flow to digestive organs is reduced. It's a survival response controlled by the autonomic nervous system. When being confronted by a tiger, your body is not interested in digesting food, but is built to increase heart rate and breathing, and getting blood into the muscles (fight or flight). So yes, working out on a belly full of food is not utilizing your autonomic nervous system and blood flow in an advantageous way.

    • @haydenw6799
      @haydenw6799 5 лет назад

      What you said is true- "In fight or flight, which is related to stressing muscle tissues during intense workouts, blood flow to digestive organs is reduced. It's a survival response controlled by the autonomic nervous system"
      this is what happens.. blood is directed AWAY from digestion and into the muscles. Many assume this is a vice-versa scenario but it is NOT
      There has been studies go to layne norton's channel.. there is NO difference in blood flow to the muscles in fasted individuals that train vs full individuals that train- now this might differ if you eat food like 5-10 minutes before you train cause that might confuse the body, I GET THAT.. but you're body has no trouble prioritizing survival over digestion and redirecting that blood to the muscles for performance. meal or not. make sense?
      Careful telling someone "don't overlook this" because you happened to do just that. Just present the info, we're all here to learn.
      Right now my initial comment is still what I'm wondering lol- you mentioned nothing about m-tor stimulation / caffeine in your first reply and basically just told me your daily schedule

    • @kmax7163
      @kmax7163 5 лет назад

      @@haydenw6799 Yes, for me I don't weight train after eating. I give it a minimum of 6 hours between eating and gym time. I see no benefits working out with a full stomach or intestine. Lions, after eating always rest for hours. They can't hunt well with full bellies. And yes a body doesn't get confused if it has to perform strenuously with a full stomach but it's best to not do that for several physiological reasons.
      As far as m-tor, I have no concerns or questions regarding that.
      Aside from diet and exercise, my interests are in chi and the chakra side for an overall health. There is an energy ( as well as gravity & structural impact) component that gets overlooked in Western diets and is rarely meshed with dieting procedures of all kinds.
      As far as caffeine/ coffee; I never drink American coffee. It's like flavored water. I always drink home brewed Vietnamese coffee which is much much stronger but no bitterness, and they naturally have different organic flavors. American coffee as far as I'm concerned, is garbage.

    As someone who loves coffee more than most, drink it every day anywhere between 20 and 40 ounces, only drink it black, and only buy local roasted gourmet coffee, coffee may not inhitbit weight loss benefits from Intermittent fasting.....BUT if you are doing extended fasts between 3 to 30 days, coffee will inhibit most of the beneficial reactions in the body, naturally found IF few years back from just listening to my body and living an endurance lifestyle, started extended fasting a year ago, totally different effects on the body and just about everything will break it, stick to water, stay strong, reap the rewards. Don’t hate me for this, nothing but love 🤙🏽

    After doing intermittent fasting for 2 years I have transition to the carnivore diet. I consume bone broth and two cups of coffee in the morning then I still keep my eating window from noon to 6. During that time I eat Mainely beef but also eggs and some chicken. After getting blood work done, all of my markers were good except my cholesterol. My LDL was high. Immediately the doctor wanted to put me on statins. Since I've been on the carnivore diet my intestines have never felt better, my skin is a lot better, and I feel fantastic. This is after being on the carnivore diet for 6 months. I was also able to get rid of the last 10 lbs which got my body fat percentage to 8.5%. What are your thoughts on cholesterol? Dr. Sean Baker, the leading proponent of a carnivore diet says there is correlation between high LDL and heart disease but not causation. I tend to think he's telling the truth because of the way that the diet makes me feel. What are your thoughts on this diet and can a single thing like high LDL cause heart disease?

      Yes, I agree. Cycling between two meals a day, one meal a day, and zero meals a day is the best way to keep your metabolism high. For example in one week, perhaps 4 days two meals a day, 2 days one meal per day, and zero food for one day. But the 7 day week is completely arbitrary. I keep it organic.

      endurance training can lower the body's fat set point, if you arent already doing some sort of it, try HIT too. high protein diet to keep the most lean mass with a slight deficit in calories. dont restrict like crazy youll just make the body go into "famine mode" and become too calorie efficient.
      also try turmeric with black pepper or a curcumin-piperine supp. turmeric lowers fasting glucose levels- does a ton more actually
      maybe a bit of a chromium supplement too, apple cider vinegar..
      also a short walk after a meal has shown to increase insulin sensitivity so after you eat do that so that more is shuttled into the muscles

    Your definition of autophagy isn’t correct. It isn’t “healthy cells eating unhealthy cells” it is the breakdown of internal components of cells by the lysosome into components that can be recycled. The cell is not destroyed at all due to the process of autophagy.

    Man this is sad seeing comments saying COFFEE BREAKS A FAST or WHATS THE POINT OF FASTING. Chill guys, I thought we were meant to use IF as a tool to help our lifestyles not let it control us. Technically you all fast everyday just from sleeping all your doing is pushing it during the day. It’s sad to see people will go to the extreme. Example would be if someone was extremely ill but didn’t want to take medication cause they worried about there fast?!

      Caffeine must be broken down and digested by your liver. Therefore, it DOES break your fast. Yeah, it does some fat loss through caloric burn and temp rise, etc.
      But drinking coffee is the same thing is taking a bite of a fucking Snickers. Caffeine must be digested, and is therefore a food to your body. So you’re wrong, lol

    I've heard that, in some cases, coffee triggers stress hormones like Cortisol. This will increase blood sugar in some people, thus breaking a fast because of it. I'm not really sure if drinking coffee would be sustainable for mantaining autophagy...

    Bad News: I latched on to you because of your authentic, non-commercial and logical approach to understanding how food works, plus the gut feeling I had about following you. The Green Detox ad I've seen lately gives me a knot in my stomach because there's no way a scientifically processed powder can trump natural food, and the fake display of your blender operational skills in the ad confirmed it - time to unsubscribe and move on.
