In either case, yes they need to be patient. But, the handlers had two more elephants to unload also and it was almost dark. I wonder, when Toka was dusting, if she was comforting herself. It must have been an ordeal for her, all the strangeness, moving, noises, everything. Doing something so normal might have helped her deal with it all.
There is another sanctuary in Thailand called "Elephant Nature Park" and on their site, they video transporting elephants that are being rescued from logging camps. Humans accompany the elephants, and feed them while their in transit. The elephant is moved in the back bed of a truck. No mechanical equiment, no hoists. No dust and crap. The whole process is much slower and at the ease of the elephant. Not the convenience of the humans. I think people should learn this critical step in handling these gentle giants. I also know that the Toronto Zoo elephant keepers had devised a very detailed, slower game plan to move these elles. And it was dismissed out of hand. I'm glad they are now here but things need to be handled differently with these creatures. They are not just "animals".
