    These videos are perfect! There are a lot of RUclips channels out there that show the best in what they do, so a welding channel is going to show their best welding technique. You however show the best balance between cost efficiency and quality for the application. You are even doing differently with each car and the level of quality the costumer wants (to pay for!).
    My dad owns a car shop in The Netherlands and this is what I find as one of the most misunderstood things of customers. Some want top notch quality but don’t want to pay for it. It just doesn’t work that way. Besides this, Al has proven to be an infinite source of automotive knowledge and experience. This is why I think you are one of the best or even THE best automotive channel on RUclips. Thank you for making these video’s and keep creating awesome stuff!

      Yeah, Al provides so much information, and they all based on personal experience. So it is much different, to get info from someone with years and years of experience. Or the internet moron who only knows how to do these things from reading about it online.

    I would love more of these "you don't need to do this because the internet says you have to" vids to exist on the intertubes. They are properly beneficial to the people like myself who may embark on such things, and hopefully put an end to the trash that I've seen while researching what I intend to do.
    More debunking please Al and Woody. You guys are real.

    This is why Al hit it on the head. I work as an ASME Section VIII/XI Welding Engineer for context. He isn't dealing with a construction code. I expect a visual inspection; but no PT, tensiles, bends, ferrite, impacts, corrosion, chemical requirements. Not dealing with dangerous/lethal service, or something that needs to be built in such a way to not blow somebody up. Best practice is to not have heavy oxidation/sugaring, but otherwise in this context have fun and make it happen.

    As someone who works in the stainless steel tank building industry I must say that this is a very good explanation of purge wedding.
    A more budget way to purge is to use nitrogen but it means that you need another type of bottle.
    You can also use a copper backing bar if you have flat things to weld (obviously no good for tube)
    We use anything handy for caping the end of tubes if you have a cold end you can use cardboard or plain tape.
    Also it is very important to note that it is a waste of time and money to purge weld on a lot of applications.

    I'm glad this quick-tech wasn't super snappy. You didn't just explain what's what, but filled in both wider context - where purge welding is really important, and likely where the overapplied ideas come from - and more narrow context - this kind of work, and why we rarely actually need it for this. Your "blurting out what's in your head", adds valuable and materially important context, and the personal touch that turn decent content, into unique, great content.
    If people understand the _why,_ not just the _how,_ the lesson tend to stick a lot better, and people become / can work more independent(ly).

    Hey Skid Factory, you should do another one of these types of videos where Alan goes over some of the mistakes he has made in his custom vehicle building lifetime, stories of what didn't work are just as interesting as stories of what does work! Cheers.

    Thanks for another very interesting video! Everything so well explained without much usesless blabla. I'm working now almost 20 years on BMWs for a living and still I'm deeply impressed by your skills and knowledge. And sure there'll be always someone out there in this world who's even better but also almost everytime these persons just focus on one thing. I'd love to see if all these "weldinggods" also have your knowledge and skills of fabricating a wiring loom, building an engine and so on - I doubt it highly. Greetings and hats off from germany!

    Perfect explanation I’m in to the dairy industry I’m a dairy tech and I do a lot of welding and your explanation it’s on point! Just the inside of the food grad it’s more clean it’s the same color as the pipe but again food grade we use more argon flow! Big 👍🏻 love to here you explaining!

    Al, an excellent demonstration and explanation on the different methods of TIG welding and their different uses. I have had major fabrication work carried out on an offroad buggy constructed of chrome moly tubing by a mate who specialises in the food grade side of welding and his work is something to behold as he still chose to purge certain parts of the chassis around the engine area and this explains clearly to me why he did just that. Yes he was not cheap but the end result has other welders in amazement at the quality of the work mentioning overkill but if ever I turn this thing onto it's lid I am happy that he has made the strongest possible welds so cheap insurance in my opinion. An excellent basic tech video to anybody starting out on TIG welding I reckon.

    Very good explanation. I think many "people of the internet" forgett that somebody is paying to have you do the work. If you add cost not needed or not wanted by the customer. Well your not gonna have a job. Great work fellas! Great vid!

    Different things require different techniques. Wisdom that can be applied to all walks of life. These videos are great and The Skid Factory is my favourite automotive show a long with MCM and it's cool to see Benny making content. Got tired of Motortrend although I still watch, DeBoss is pretty cool still. But no one else is humble and making informative vids. Who else can say that at their job they watch vids on their lunch break to get better at their job and to relax. Cheers guys!

    Finally some common sense about welding. I have a friend who is a real pro welder that does mainly dairy work and he gets a laugh out of the internet experts. When I asked him he basically taught me the same thing.

    Hey Al & woody I'm a boilermaker/welder by trade. Instead of argon gas for the purge line you can also use helium gas which works as well. It will save you some money. Keep up the good work lads 🤙

      But Al is using his smaller tank as a back up bottle for welding... so maybe it´s reasonable for him to use argon in it too? Anyways... good info Brendan...

    Al, You did a great job! We used C02 as a purge gas. It is liquid in the bottle then comes out as a vapor and lasts a long time. Argon gas is expensive here in the states too.

    Hi , I was a ticketed 4703 dairy back purged welder over 25 years ago , good video for car guys , one thing i could add would be is, argon is heavier than air so think about it filling the pipe and bleeding out the hole and watch your flow rating on the purge as it will bellow out your weld making it look like you don't need any filler wire , when welding , and then internally it will be undercut outwards , hope that makes sense.     Love the content you guys put out & quick tech is cool.
    I have worked in Oil & Gas construction for many year & the technique used out there when welding "gas lines" is to build small argon dams inside the pipe, a mixture of high temp foam & plywood sandwitches & blow up heat bags.
    Only reason I comment is it can save a lot of gas as only the area at the weld needs a shield, a small foam ply combo with the purge line stainless wire connecting another ply foam combo with a hole for the purge. connect a long piece of wire & pull it down the pipe to the next weld & off you go.
    Some cooling between locations may help to not melt your purge rig!

    This was really informative and I appreciate y'all posting it. I wish you could have gone into more detail on what sugaring was and why it is bad/causes problems in intakes, and why it is ok to not worry about it in exhausts. Thanks for helping educate the internet!

      Take it slow... and find as much good info as you can... bad info will make you lose interest and fast!!!! Find someone that is kick arse in welding and get them to show you... let them setup the machine and see if you have the gift, this also shows you, when you weld you are capable... if it comes up crappy later.. you need to spend more time setting up, maybe a better machine... and never... ever stop using test pieces!!! Very satisfying fusing molten metal.....

    From what I've observed from another RUclipsr who does everything on a tight budget, metal coat hangers can be used instead of welding wire for welding. He gets some damn good results from it, so it seems to work well. He's also from my home province, Nova Scotia, Canada.

    Hi guys you got this to a t I work for a welding supplies in Wales Swansea we sell Lincoln miller Esab kemppi . all I can add to this is I tell people to use a gas lens body the one with the mesh so the gas is more even spread or create a vortex to push the stuff out that you don’t want in there faster when purging but I always say if it works for you why change we also supply to a bakery manufacturer who has to abide by professional standards. tig welders always want the smallest items . We are in the middle of doing a mk3 Ford Capri with a 5.7 v8 and keep watching you videos for tips Thanks

    Great amount of sense Alan, that was such a great video, felt like an after work class. Love how you qualify yourself to the internet as an experienced individual that makes stuff work and have a high personal standard, seems to be a lost art in itself these days. I think that most people that follow the Skid Factory really enjoy what is produced....the others must be just haters

    I've only every tried welding an exhaust twice, I straight up burnt a whole in the material I was trying to weld lol... but I was mig welding and I "fixed it", 10/10 i'd recommend mig welding if you're a noob like me and just want your car to not sound faster than it really is anymore and you're tired of the muffler falling off because the make shift clamp you "engineered" keeps coming loose because the borla muffler you got for $40 isn't for your car but it sort of kinda fit in the right place. I had cut the pipping and the bends to line up with everything perfectly and that im really proud of that, but yeah, like you said Al, too much current but the hole isn't there anymore :) (2000 forester L), really looking forward to getting better over time and not put holes in things anymore lol, thank you for the tips turbo yoda … Failure story over, I have a legacy GT wagon like the liberty in the vid and super gramps and i'd love to see one of those build reviews on it!! its my dream car and im honestly glad im able to own one! great video once again guys... side question, did you guys run out of lemon squashes? haven't seen them in the last few episodes lol

    Great video! Really illustrates the point that procedures, designs and jobs always involve trade-offs. Doing what's appropriate for the specific application is what counts in the end.. Retired engineering professional in another field, also hobby welder for over 30 years....Do stick AC/DC and MIG and would love to bite the bullet and buy TIG unit because it can make absolutely beautiful thin metal joints. Haven't bought one for the same reason Al says, I don't have the requirement to justify the expense...

    We use the same process in the HVAC trade. Certain systems are very sensitive to the particulates caused by sugaring.
    When silver soldering the copper lines, a low flow nitrogen purge is used.

    You do a great job on ur fabrication projects..
    I would rather see what ur working on as you tell us bout the process ,
