      I think the company rejects very good items because they intend to sell in rescue boxes. They have no accountability for what they don’t photograph and price. I noticed over a period of time when I sent in 4 very large bags. They rejected what I considered to be my best items. All four bags had expensive designer brands that I purchased in NYC. They photographed lesser items from Anthropology and FreePeople etc. and priced them higher than I expected but totally rejected things I would expect to be much higher priced. I complained through customer service and they got back to me saying items must have smelled or been dirty. Talk about adding insult to injury! The items sent were in excellent condition. In fact I was only selling them because I’ve lost significant weight. So I definitely agree with you. BTW I looked at the Better Business Bureau complaints and there were a lot.

    I know this is an older video but I gotta say people are too afraid of "being negative" these days where it doesn't even apply -- describing a bad experience isn't negativity, especially when it's so useful to others. I was considering buying from thredup but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth that sellers aren't even getting enough back to cover their fees! I guess it will depend on how much longer I stay poor. ;) Definitely won't be selling to them like I was considering too (but my clothes are probably too worn for consignment anyway).

      Lisa Schiavone-Melchione that is super shady. I wonder what REALLY goes on behind the scenes in that company. This is why I sell things on Facebook and can't find any online sites that I can trust. I'd rather give my items to ppl for free (not even Goodwill) so that I know they are truly going to good use and not for just profit. Argh, this drives me insane!

    I never used ThredUp to sell or purchase items. I personally use Ebay to sell my own items, and the items that don't sell I donate to Goodwill. I wouldn't trust to send my items to a company that is not local to me to sell my items for me.

    I am very new to ThredUP. I just sent in my first clean out bag. I only made 5.97. I wasn’t super disappointed because my expectations we’re too high. My first issue is they just started charging $1.99 restock fee for return items. My second issue and the major one is I auto-purchased an item that was initially in another person’s cart (or bag). When it hadn’t been purchased the item in 24 hours the auto purchase kicked in. I attempted to apply the discount code I was entitled to use and it would not accept the code. I contacted customer service and they said their system wouldn’t allow the discount code or the item to be put in a bundle for shipping. So I ended up paying a lot more then I had anticipated, roughly 29 dollars more. The customer service agent was also not apologetic and didn’t acknowledge the computer should allow all sales to be processed with same policies or disclose it prior to the customer making the decision to buy. I was really upset. I formed very negative opinion on company.

    Aka Mommy, thanks for your video. I used to work for a company (Buffalo Exchange, and it was years ago!), they did the same as Thredup. Idk if they were online as I don’t think it was an option in those days! They were an excellent company to work for! I feel that some companies nowadays are really good to work with in the beginning when they are “starving” and when they get bigger, they just don’t care about consumers anymore. What’s up with that?! I’m with you!

    I sent in $300 of my daughters vguc and i mean resale value. Including London Fog coat that she hardly wore, several gymboree that were bought brand new and she hardly wore (maybe wore one time each), and also several rare edition dresses that were gorgeous dressy dresses. The bag was at full capacity. I couldnt hv put one more tiny little item in it. I got $9 for the whole lot. I was ticked! Never ever again. I could’ve gotten more out of her clothes at a garage sale. I felt total disgust for the company.

    I understand exactly what you're saying! My payout was a little more than the amount you stated, but it wasn't anything close to what they're making after my items sold. They literally sold ONE item (among MANY others) for the same amount that they gave me for the total bag. Now I see they are charging $9.99 to mail the bag when it used to be free. I'm glad you're speaking out about this!

    Hi! New sub. here and someone who was considering possibly trying thred-up as a buyer because you-tubers who I respect have been happy with them and recommended them in the past. I just recently noticed those people, and now you, have changed their mind about thred-up and some seem to be in the process of possibly dropping them. I just subscribed to your channel because I like the fact that you have been very responsible about your opinions re: this company. I agree-you once liked and recommended them, but now things have changed and you are letting your subscribers know why. I like that you did that, and I also like that you care about the sellers who now are probably not being treated fairly with what they are being given for their items. That demonstrates that you care and are a kind and morally responsible person-and I like that. Thred-up is apparently no longer taking the high road. The problem is that THEY GOT GREEDY. I've seen the same kinds of things being said by many others, and I don't believe in coincidences. So now, they will, unfortunately, have to pay the price for "going greedy". That will take them down, just as it has many other companies. They do a lot of things, in the beginning, to appear fair, well-intentioned, accommodating, etc., then the greed begins to take over and they start going down the tubes. Maybe they can redeem themselves if they heed these customer comments as both buyers and sellers, but probably not. Hopefully, similar companies will take notice of thred-up's downfall and not make the same mistakes as they begin to become successful.

      Thank you so much, Lauren!! I'm so happy to have you here. Yes, I was a long time loyal customer to ThredUp and LOVED their service when I first learned of it many years ago because it provided moms a way to actually save money on clothing AND feel good about sending used clothing to other moms for a fair price. So much has changed with them since they first started and I can only hope that others will take the time to do the research on their policies before sending anything their way.

  • @911smilingbunny
    @911smilingbunny 6 лет назад +3

    I completely agree. I gave a bag of clothing definitely worth more than $350 to thredup expecting at least $20. No, for a bag of barely/never used clothing, I got $4. And honestly, I was giving the clothes away without caring about money in return, but you can't market your whole brand on consignment and then not even give enough money to buy a single item on the shop. I'm not sure what I can buy for $4, but I can't say it's a whole lot. I completely understand the feeling of being taken advantage of. I could have sold my clothing myself and made ten times that, minimum.

    Hi,I am a new subscriber today. I was about to start a relationship with Thredup and thankfully your comments made me continue my search into this company. Now I also try to only put out positive messages, but warnings are a positive way to save others from experiencing the negative treatment which you received. ThredUP created that, you are just warning all of us how negative ThredUP treat people who do business with them. You did that in a very positive way, and I for one am appreciative of this. Seems to me you did a service for those of us who planned on doing business with them and now know enough not to. Well good for you standing up for yourself and others. I say keep up the good work.

I was just looking up Thread up and I watched their how to video, and saw yours. I have a HUGE bag of clothes I was going to send out to them. I'd rather donate them to a local thrift store then get swindled by threadUp! Most of the clothes were never worn...from kohls and I'd expect a decent payout.Plato Closet here...years ago offered me so little on each shirt I stopped going there too!

      aka Mommy... To the seller they are, but given the fact that you don't have to pay the investment price or do the heavy lifting, that was fair. Anyone can walk into a goodwill outlet and find the same kind of stuff you sold for $1 a pound. Its not hard. If you really wanted a substantial amount of money for your used clothing you need to do the work to get it. Nothing in this world is free.

    • @suecampbell8984
      @suecampbell8984 6 лет назад +4

      I think the moral of the thredup story, is to be absolutely sure of what kind of payout you might expect before you send your items. Their webpage can give you an idea of what they payout. I'm not saying everyone should think it's fair, but, as Thredup has grown, so has their overhead. Sending a bag in is just 1 step. Once that bag is received, it goes in a holding pattern until a merchandiser goes through each and every item to accept/discard, then it's graded on condition, and sent to an itemizer for final grading. If the system accepts it, it's placed on a rack to head to a photo station where it's styled and photographed for the web. Then it goes to sort, then placed in storage, until someone buys it. Then has someone to pick your order, sent to packers, then down to people who secure and stamp it to mail out. Your bag can have up to 15 people from accepting to mailing out your item. If you want max payout for your items, use ebay, Craigslist, or even your local FB yard sale site for maximum profit.

  • @emilyclarke3266
    @emilyclarke3266 6 лет назад

    I agree, I’ve sent BIG bags similar and only gotten maximum $20. What bothers me more recently is I feel there prices are getting higher and when I receive the clothing it smells terrible and I can’t wash it out, if I’m paying for an item that’s as high as they price their items I would rather pay extra for something that is new and not damaged or stinky.

    As an employee of thredup i can say alot goes into the processing process. I believe alot of customers don't realize some of the effects with their clothing . becauee whther something has a new tag or not there still may have been a stain that was unrecognizable to the buyer or other defects that the customer may have not realized had defects with them

    I shop Thred Up a lot. I've been happy with what I've received. However, I sent in 5 large boxes of high end clothing, a lot of it new with tags. The compensation I received was a joke. I could have gotten a lot more selling on eBay or even at a garage sale. Thred up doesn't pay.

    I loved this video! I too had the same experience with my last 2 bags. I will no longer buy or sell from ThredUP. They recently started to charge a return assurance fee of $9.99 to get items sent back....which is absolutely absurd. If you do not choose to use the credit, you can have it sent to your paypal account but they keep 2%...on top of the little amount they give you for the items, cost to have unacceptable items sent back, the processing time to get bags sorted and up for sale is so not worth the time. It took 1 1/2 months to process my two bags. Another negative thing is once your consignment item gets sold, your payment takes several days...Not to be negative but I want everyone to be informed of all these issues with this website before losing money and wasting their time. I hope this comment is helpful to others!!

    Ugh I had a similar experience at somewhere like Once upon a child, one if those kids resell shops, everything, lots of clothes costume, etc for like $7. Same deal, they buy it for $.50 & then resell for $5-$10 😱 I had better luck at big consignment sales like Just Between Friends where you price & tag the clothes & you get straight cut of whatever sells during y weekend sale

    I've had the exact same experience. I sent them a huge bag of NICE clothes - Banana Republic, BCBG, Max Studio. Confirmed payout by them was $22.10. WHAT? I won't sent them any more clothes, and I will not purchase either. I'm glad I held off on sending them my "luxe" items. Thanks for making this video and sharing your experience.

    Yay!!! You go, Mommy! Finally someone is telling the truth about this company. I got so ripped off, sending them hundreds of dollars' worth of clothing, shoes and handbags, some of which were gifts from my children, and after paying (yes, paying) to ship them my clothes, I got maybe $7 total (7 must be the magic number). It's a total ripoff, especially when you see how much your items sell for. They made a killing off of me, and I'm not alone. Please don't support this company. If ThredUp would tell you upfront that hundreds of dollars' worth of your clothing will get you a few dollars in compensation and get them hundreds in sales, then that's fair. But they--and the bloggers and vloggers who make sponsor this company--make you think you're going to get a fair price.

  • @ellemjay
    @ellemjay 6 лет назад +12

    The problem is that they get TONS of stuff from the brands you listed and it's almost impossible for them to make a profit selling them if they pay you more than a token amount. I was very careful with what I sent in and I got about $20 for seven items (they accepted five).

    I appreciate your honesty and thank you for sharing your experience with ThredUp. I own a consignment store in CT and truly believe that supporting local stores is an all around better experience. Consigning with your local store allows for a greater percentage of the sale and as a purchaser, you get to try-on the item, feel the fabric and see the quality of the piece. If you don't have a local consignment store - many of us have consignors that ship items. I personally have consignors from all over the country. Each consignor gets an online account and can check to see what we have listed their pieces for, when they sell and what their balance is at all times. Look for a store that has this service - It creates transparency and you feel more a part of the process.

    I sure wished I had found this channel before I sent my one and only bag. I sent a bag with about 40items in it all were either new or barely worn. They accepted 15 or 16 items. I had already marked that whatever they didn't accept they could donate thinking it wouldn't be many items. I was surprised that they only took that many and on top of that a couple of the items they did not "accept" had never been worn and still had tags on them. They were also fairly recent items (with in the last 2 years). I received about $6.90 before the fees. So I was only going to make $ 1.91. The gas I used to drive this to my local post office was more that. I contacted them and did not hear back for a few days. In the meantime I saw a sponsored video on them and made a remark in the comments about it. They responded to that and told me to contact customer support. I did (again) and the waived the bag fee so I would receive $6.90. One thing I did not understand why some items they pay out instantly and others you received commission on after they sold. To date I have made a total of $9.70. I bought a couple of items from them just to get something out of it and to use the credit that I had. I will never send another bag nor buy again. To me, it was really a shady deal. I have some doubts that the items that they did not accept were actually donated.

    DO NOT SEND CLOTHES TO THREDUP. I sent them new with tags boots that I paid $200 for. They lied to me and told me the boots were not accepted. But I saw that they listed them. They stole clothes from me and took advantage of the fact that i did not use seller assurance. If you are inclined to sell you have to use the seller assurance to get items back that they haven’t accepted. Which is ridiculous because the fee is taken out of the profit you make which is sometimes a measly amount. I did not use the assurance because the items I sent were extremely high quality and I knew they would have no problem selling them. I learned my lesson. I no longer support ThredUp.

    Thanks for being so honest! I see tons of reviews of the company from other RUclipsrs, so I thought I would give it a try as well. Before I sent my items, I checked some of the payout prices on their website and was shocked to see that my higher quality items would only be paid for with cents on the dollar, so I didn't end up using them to sell. I can put my items on a Facebook group and do the work myself to make at least a whole dollar. Sad, because the idea behind the company is genius!

    100% agree on everything you said in this video. I have used ThredUp for maybe 2 years now and typically would get between 25 and 35 bucks a bag...now with that $9.99 fee for each bag I get next to nothing. Then, the few times I have actually tried to shop the site with my credit, the selection is terrible! They are selling things on their site that are terribly outdated and I am sending them barely used clothes, sometimes with the tags on them, and getting next to nothing. If you know of another similar site to switch to, I'd love to find one!

I had a brand new pair of Kate Spade shoes ($250 value) along with about 8 other "designer" items (Jcrew, BCBG, etc) accepted by them. They gave me $43 for everything. Although I have no real complaint as that sure beats $7. Good video, thank you!

    Thank you for sharing your experience. My frustration, along with the pricing, is that by the time they process the bags, the seasons have changed and they accept few items. I was so upset when I got less than $2 from my last bag (after their new fees) and looked to see what they were selling my items for. They were making over $500 if they sold all my items. I will not deal with this company anymore.

    Don’t send anything unless it’s higher brands. You won’t get much for target old navy and stores like that. They do have a payout scale before you send anything in. They do pay out very little. My first bag I sent in to Thred UP I got $42.00......and there were many, many name brands in the bag in great condition. My second bag.............I think I got $16.00. It was such a huge bag, I could barely close it. Included in the bag was a terrific pair of Frye boots that I had gotten from Thred Up in the first place. When they arrived, it was super hot out, and I tried the boots on, and they were pretty tight. I wasn't worried, because quality leather will shape to your foot. I put them in the closet..........and tried them on in cooler weather 3 months later. I wore these boots for a total of 2 hours!!! My feet were killing me, and I decided it wasn't worth all the pain to stretch them out, so I sent them in to the company in a clean out bag. I didn't see the item on my "list" of things I sent in...................so I called the company. They said they weren't sellable, and donated them! Are you kidding me??!!! Had they fit, I would have happily worn these boots for years!! They were terrific boots!! I was just floored. So I called the company and complained, and they finally gave me a small percentage as "credit"..............ha ha. I didn't get very much money, compared to what I had purchased them for from the site. What I don't understand is, if they were "unsellable" boots, how can they justify selling them in the first place? For the price I purchased them for?? After 2 hours of wearing them?? And after looking at the quality of some of the boots on their site since then, how in the world can they deem the Frye boots I sent them as "unsellable"?? They were good looking boots, or I wouldn't have purchased them in the first place!! I've always thought something was fishy about the whole thing...........those boots were in terrific condition and I'm still in shock quite frankly. SMH, I will NEVER send them a single thing again.

    I agree with you! I used to get $50-100 credit for my clothes. The last few times the amount was a lot less! I think it was a couple of dollars. I send designer clothes, shoes, etc and in great condition. Some items unused. I think now if I send my clothes to them, I will look at it as more of a donation. And if I get money back that would be extra. I usually send donation bags to Mexico and other charities, and the only reason I used THred up was I thought that the nicer Designer items would be appreciated.

    I couldn't agree more! I had the same experience:( I sent a very large bag of high quality clothes and only received a $6.60 credit...very disappointed in this company as well. So sad considering I was very excited to use this company for buying & selling my gently used clothing.

      I had previously done business with them and had always been very pleased with my experience....I was apparently not aware of the change in policy.

    Style Encore is another consignment (store, not online) located in N Myrtle Beach SC that will give you pennies for your great looking clothes, don't shop at these places. I've noticed these online and off line stores are doing the same everywhere.

    Thank you for sharing, I was contemplating selling to them. How can they sell an item without your approval of final payment!? That's insane!!

    I have used Thred Up for the last year and have sent in at least four or more bags of my own clothing, etc. The first bags sent I recd what I considered a fair offer or price. Some items could have gotten better prices but I wasn't upset about it. The last bag I sent in I got around the same amount that you did ($7.00) and it upset me very much. I don't ever send in trash to a consignment store because that is not what the consignment store is supposed to be used for in my opinion. I only send my best. I don't even sell anything in a garage sale that might have a stain or rip. Everything they have bought from me has sold rather quickly including the items from this last bag. I could have made a LOT more off of Ebay or elsewhere even with the fees. I won't ever use Thred Up to sell my items ever again. I can't figure out why the first bags received better offers than the last one. They were all similar in clothing and number of items. However, the last bag most definitely received much less than the others and I cannot figure out why. It won't happen again as my sales will go elsewhere. I was a really good customer as I not only sold to them but I also bought a LOT from them. Very disappointed to say the least.

    Hi. Thank you for your review of threadup. My personal experience (1st & last time) they showed me a credit of $1.23. I logged in again today and that 1.23 credit is no longer there. All I see is what the accepted and hasn't sold yet. I'm so disappointed.

    This happened to me too. I sent them some really nice clothing, including a lot of dresses with the tags still on and only made $17.

    I thought they give you an automatic payout for items that are hot sellers, and then the rest are consignment, so you get up to 84 days to have them sold, and then you get the pricing from that. So your 7$ was just the automatic payout? or Nothing that was considered consignment sold either?

    • @akaMommy
      @akaMommy  7 лет назад

      $7 was the total amount that I was paid by them.....and I didn't even receive that because it wasn't enough to cover the $10 shipping rate.

    Oh man, that's what these companies are coming to. I had a similar experience with Platos closet. Coach sandals, Coach purse, Fergie shoes, brand new Wedges, couple nice tops, etc... and they wanted to give me $9. Total slap in the face. I don't expect a lot but the shoes alone they could get $20.

      Absolutely! I'm going to be doing a video on this that will go live on my channel next week, but if you're interested you could check out Swap.com. This is the site I've been using and I've earned well over $100 on my clothing. I have a referral link that will save you 20% and get you free shipping should you ever decide to purchase from them as well. It's ttp://referral.swap.com/330690329831280640. :)

    Wow... I just signed up for their (ThreadUp) site however, I will not be purchasing or selling with/to them. I am a single mother of two Autistic boys and I would be as equally upset because we live penny to penny. Thank you for the info and I am glad I came across this channel and post.

      Hi April!!! I would highly caution you against selling to them/buying from them. I am actually planning on participating in a HUGE children's clothing consignment sale that is held bi-annually about an hour from my house. While it isn't SUPER close to me, it's worth the effort, I think. Perhaps you could reach out to friends or do a search online to see if there's anything like that near you??

    I think this is so unjust on their end. As much as I hate to say it, I've had this exact experience with a ton of reselling stores. I have sold barely worn, designer items to Plato's Closet, Buffalo Exchange, and Uptown Cheapskate, and never made more than $20. As much as it sucks, I'm starting to feel like there isn't much money to be made from selling directly to companies that resell.

    • @akaMommy

      I agree.....it seems like when the price setting capability is taken out of the hands of the seller, it goes downhill from there. :(

    The moral of the story is ...do not sell things to ThreadUp...they are clearly taking advantage of those seeking to sell.
