Let's talk magic items in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. This time we're looking at non magic tattoo and non artifact magic items. That being said, there were quite a few new awesome new magic items in this book. No real specific love for barbarians, monks or rogues though and that's kind of a bummer.

It almost seems like each wizard subclass (minus those from Wildemount) got a spellbook made for them. Each school of magic got one. There’s a generic wizardly spellbook for Scribes, the most wizardy wizard. War magic goes well with the Conjuration/Abjuration book, since that subclass thrives on summoning things to fight fir you. And the very rare psionic orb seems to fit the Bladesinger perfectly as a stereotype for the DnD jedi knight. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but i find the concept really cool

The bonus to saving throws equal to rarity is INCREDIBLY powerful. A +2 bonus to spell save DCs will satisfy a level 20 character in a party that has outgrown +3 weapons in favor of legendary weapons. Having that on very rare is incredibly powerful. It's actually power creeping the robes of the archmage.

The way the shards effects are written suggests you roll to see which kind of shard you got and it stays that way.
It's "roll a d4 to determine the property. When you use a metamagic you can use that property."
If you needee to roll everytime, it would be "when you use a metamagic, roll a d4, and you can use the corresponding effect."
The roll is made before the possibility to trigger the property even occur, not when you use the peoperty, therefore the property stays the same.

The astromancy "shard" is another d4 bonus to my Kundarak Artificer/Rogue/Wizard who would then be at 22 +2d4(3d4 with locks) +1d20(minimum of 10) with most tools, tickling a DC of 50, with other potential bonuses from the team not included.
The All Purpose Tool mounted into Armor of Tools is a nice add too. Synergistic flavor is always nice.

19:50 Feywild Shard: I know that it's an optional effect upon metamagic activation, I can't help but think if I _wanted_ to roll on the Wild Magic Table even once a day, I'd probably have chosen Wild Magic as my Sorcerous Origin. Are there reasons why someone (Who isn't a Wild Magic Sorcerer deliberately recharging Tides of Chaos) would want to risk a Wild Magic Surge Effect?

    • @Nildread
      @Nildread 3 года назад +1

I had to reread wild magic sorcerer and the fey wild shard's wording is the same as their first LVL feature, so I would guess it works the same as that. I don't think the possibility of casting fireball on yourself is worth possibly regaining all your sorcery points or advantage on perception checks or regaining 5 hit points at the start of your turn for a minute.
So I guess the only reason to use it is if you only got this one from random loot/your DM is evil and you were about to die anyway or you're crazy.

I had an idea for a weapon with a similar concept/ability to that All Purpose Tool, and funnily enough, while thinking about it I was just calling it The Tool.
An uncommon item, a grayish-white metal rod about a 1.5 feet long. As part of the attunement process you decide what type of weapon it becomes. On a long or short rest you can shift it to a different type of weapon, and once per day you can speak it's command would to instantly shift it to a different form if needed. You can turn it into a shield(but thinking about it, there would almost never be a reason to do so -maybe if unless ambushed by lots of ranged attacks and you wanted a quick +2 AC you could use the command word to instantly change it). No bonus to hit or attack, but it does count as a magic weapon for attack purposes.
The overall point of it is its versatility: it basically helps out a party early on and fills in gaps in their arsenal until they get something better, it's then passed to whoever has the next highest need, then the next, etc. A perpetual hand-me-down weapon.

@@NerdImmersion I get that yes. But the thing is, a lot of us don't mess with playtest material. It's like hopping on the beta-server for a game- okay, cool, you can see stuff early, but there are a lot of people, myself included, who enjoy larger compilations of thoroughly tested material... I enjoy videos like yours because I like hearing what other people think about this or that item, but whenever it comes to stuff that was UA, your analysis seems to just be "this is how it's different". 1) If I've never seen the material before, that's meaningless, and doesn't give me enjoyment of hearing what you think of the item, in its current iteration... and 2) do you periodically review all of the new UA material, and I've just missed that? Even if so, for someone who generally waits for published books, I'm going to miss a lot of it, just because I'm not terribly interested

@@mjp121 As soon as new UA comes out, Ted immediately makes a video and does his thoughts on it, which is why he doesn’t rehash them here when they are so close to being the same. If you want to hear his thoughts, you can always go back and watch those older videos.

@@boopdabeep5300 ah, my bad. I still think they're worth discussing when a full book comes out, particularly where there are differences (and not just to note the differences) but I recognize how it could be draining to go over the same content twice

the druid Items area really really bad and the ranger didnt get anything note worthy ... like the best one for them both is the bonus action hide ... something the ranger get at a later level "fairly late in my opinion"
the Sycle is such an insult like cool for spells attacks and saving throws the ranger dont get any of those that are worth
and the weapon is not even a finess both classes are leaning toword dex more than str.... and its a d4 weapon .... sigh
why it wasnt a scimitar that is shaped like a sycle ??? WHO FN KNOWS !!!!
the cauldron ... wow it is cool for the hibbies but for me I HATE IT !!! I dont want my raging moon druid walking around with a trick or treat bag ! like letterly most likely if I got this Item I would attune to it only at the start of a long rest to make the potion and then deattun to it.
