Rdj’s whole character, anything with simple jack, Les Grossmans whole character, half of the jokes wouldn’t fly today.
You just need a director like Scorsese with Wolf of Wall Street, Cronenberg with any of his films, Tarantino who's been on the show, Solonz etc. who has clout and can circumvent these PC requirements. Or just do something uncompromising with them.

If Tropic Thunder came out today I'm sure some people would say it's woke because there's a black character in it who's gay. And Aliens? Vazquez? An lgbt hispanic character? Apone? A black sergeant leading the platoon? Don't tell me you wouldn't have people whining about DEI. If Star Wars puts minorities in those roles it's woke but movies have been doing that for a while now and they're some of our favorite movies.

People see a trailer and freak out just from the cast. So it wouldn't matter if the characters were memorable or not.

I dated a girl who owned a motorcycle and I didn't know how to drive one ate the time. For a while I though it was immasculating and straight up refused to ever jump on the back. It got to a point where we would go somewhere together but I would take a taxi while she drove her bike there.
This was so embarrassing, I just had to force myself to learn how to ride a bike. Within a year of this I owned three bikes and a pick up truck (stick)... I went back to being the man 😅

Why does Joe think movie studios wouldn't make that movie today? Movie studios couldn't care less about people's feelings. They exist to make money. Of course somebody could make Tropic Thunder today. He has said "can't make it today" a hundred times over the years. All that matters is that it's profitable.

Tropical Thunder came out in 2008, not 1970. The woke crowd existed. I've never seen the movie, but I remember everyone talking about blackface when it came out. From what I can remember the blackfacing was ironic, so people were mostly okay with it. You certainly couldn't just do blackface for a halloween costume or whatever back then without people taking offense.
Things are a lot more different today than they were in 2008. There might have been some grumblings about Tropic Thunder when it first came out, but the outcry would be much louder today.
Downey spoke butchered Mandarin, but he didn't put makeup on to look Asian, only a hat and poncho. There's no "yellowface."
Today is the same as then lol. The time is pretty damn close. We not comparing 100 year time span. Or 50. You "couldnt do it" then either. And they did it. If anything. It’s the same in the military. I was an infantryman in the Army and we would play Dungeons and Dragons during downtime on deployment. I think there’s a certain type of person that’s sort of an outsider that’s drawn to both nerdy stuff and martial pursuits. Either that, or people that are drawn to martial pursuits have enough confidence to like whatever they’re going to like, and not really give a shit what other people think about it.
