For his portrayal in this movie, RDJ actually received Best Supporting Actor nominations for both the Golden Globes and Oscars. In contrast, I don't know if he was gonna win either since it was a parody/comedy film, but he and all the other nominees in 2009 just so happened to come up against Heath Ledger's Joker.
@Not Me he still _is_ phenomenal, he hasn’t gone anywhere he just doesn’t act anymore. He had surgery for throat cancer and breathes through a tube in his neck. He’s a very good painter now though.
You have to check this out in DVD format with the actor's commentary. The part where Robert Downey Jr's character says he doesn't drop character until he does the DVD commentary is played out, its comedic genius. He does the voice over in the voice of the sergeant all through the movie, then once the movie reaches the point that he becomes the blonde actor he is acting as, he switches to that guys voice, and finally, when it gets to the credits and it shows Robert Downey Jr's name along side his characters, he then finally switches to his real voice. Just brilliant writing there.

I think the ACLU sat at a prescreening of this film to rule if what RDJ did was considered "blackface," and they ruled it wasn't. Because he was playing a person pretending to be another person disguised as another person, it was a crucial part of the story, and it was damn funny they let it ride.
Ben Stiller is ALWAYS ripped, he is a very big fitness enthusiast and is constantly exercising. He’s played a fitness nut villain in 2 movies, Heavy Weights and Dodgeball. Also as per your question of how many stars are in this, Family Guy took a shot at him at how he needs all these stars for his movies to be successful and said stars that will be in his next movie and listed like 50 names
I'm so glad ya'll mentioned the Matthew McConnaughey part at the end with the Tivo. I always found that shit hilarious how he just moved like an animated gazel on speed. It made no sense for him to suddenly be there, then to just run into the woods never to be seen again. It was the perfect nonsense ending for that bit.
It took me and my buddies half way through the movie to realize that Les was Tom Cruise, this is by far one of the best comedies to ever exist. I really hope Jamie Foxx releases All-Star Weekend, that shit would be gold!
"They always make Ben Stiller a leader"... that's cuz Ben Stiller usually writes, directs, produces or some combination of the 3... He gives himself a lot of work. I mean, hell honey go get it as far as I'm concerned.
"I basically did no research into addiction or withdrawal or any of that. I just kinda came on set and made some stuff up." -- Jack Black in the DVD commentary, describing his acting method.
27:53 is hilarious. Ive watched a lot of reactions to this movie and you're the first guys I've seen mention how fast Matthew Mcconaughey randomly starts running. When I first saw this I lost it at that.
This was RIGHT after Iron man. The fact that this movie actually went over as well as it did probably saved his career more than iron man did, because if people got as offended as they could have, RDJ would've ended right then and there forever lol. He was actually nominated for best supporting actor that year because this movie was so well received. He lost to Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
This movie literally saved Tom Cruise's career, not RDJ's... all the scientology beliefs & horror stories from former members that started leaking online in the mid 2000s along with all his weird couch jumping antics & that internal recruitment video had the majority of the public thinking Cruise was absolutely insane...
@@mobiusbelts3607all that Mission: Impossibling didn't hurt either. Number 3 had just come out a couple years before and was the best one they ever did. Until 4, 4 was the best one they ever did. Until 5, 5 was...

FUN FACT: In the movie RDJ’s character Kirk Lazurus says says “Man I don’t drop character till I’ve done the dvd commentary.” Well in the actual commentary RDJ is in character as Lincoln Osiris all the way until Kirk goes back to his Australian accent and then when the credits roll he goes back to himself as RDJ. Also this movie is still relevant for today because it is entirely believable that a movie studio would almost actively go out of their way to have an acclaimed, legendary actor who is white play a black man than risk hiring an unknown actually black actor play the part. And Robert Downey Jr. was actually so good at playing a black man that in the special features of the bluray Brandon T. Jackson who plays Alpa Chino said he practically treated him like a black man.
Huh? Did you just wake up from a coma?? No, that is not “entirely believable” that Hollywood would do that today - in fact, it’s the literal opposite of that. Holy shit man. What a bizarre fantasy.
My favorite line, "look at you, you more cut than a julienned salad. How you do it, man? You got some tips, you got some tips..... give me that g'damn map!" Best stuff ever!
Some added fun, J-lo and Ludacris performed the ending song at the MTV music awards, with Tom Cruise…dressed as Les Grosman. Tom held his own dancing right next to JLo
The reason Matthew McConaughey was moving so fast at the end was because in the original ending he was meant to be caught, and he and the little kid leader were going to be watching the Oscars at the very end. But test audiences reacted negatively to that, so they changed it.
Seriously, RDJ did one of the best acting jobs I've seen in a long time. He had the mannerisms of a 60s brother down to a "T". Ben Stiller did a good job as a guy cracking up too. He could have been a good serious actor too, in addition to comedy!
The Behind the scenes commentary for this movie is almost as funny as the movie itself. Ben Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. Also as he said in the movie RDJ stays in character with the voice of who he is on the screen. It’s so fun to listen to
Ben Stiller was more or less playing all of those action heroes who makes one sequel after another, like Stallone Jack Black was playing an Eddie Murphy type actor who played every role like Murphy did in The Nutty Professor and Robert Downey Jr was basically playing a Russell Crowe type actor
I would say that Robert wasn’t just playing Russel Crowe who isn’t known for being a method actor, to me he represented actors such as Jared Leto, Daniel Day Lewis (who actually was *very* known for being a method actor to the point where he legitimately did not break character even during the times he was off screen or during breaks. Many have said it was both inspiring and annoying as all get out), sadly I cannot remember all the actors that were labeled as method actors, only Daniel Day Lewis comes to mind because it was such a well-known fact. I do remember hearing of an actor who was thought of being an absolute horror to work with due to how he completely disappeared into any character he was portraying to the point where if the character was abusive, he himself was mean to the production staff. It was really, really bad but he didn’t know how to pull himself out of the characters he portrayed. It was a well known fact in Hollywood. However, I will say that there was even testimony that once the film was finished, he would go up to each and every crew member and apologize for his behavior and even gave them gifts and money.
@@gilessaint-loup2426 he does the commentary as Lincoln up until he goes back to being Australian in the movie… then he switches to Australian up until the end credits where he then goes back to his normal voice. It’s hilarious
I think most people are Ok with his black face because it is not making fun of black people but making fun of black face itself. The "What do you mean 'YOU people'??" line gets this point across and is probably the best line in the movie.
Almost nobody notices Mcconaughey sprinting off super quick right back into the jungle, it's a fantastic little detail. As for the 'blackface', they were very apprehentious about going ahead with it, and test-screened it before, to make sure the interpretation landed as intended. The crucial part is the interaction between RDJs character and BTJs, with them both stating outright why it's happening, and the latter clearly voicing his displeasure with the situation. As always, context is what matters
27:53: Rick got the idea when talking to Les, remember when he said 'leave him to die for some money and a (fill in model) aeroplane ?' Thats when he figured he could take the jet and the money and use said jet to fly overseas and go help Tugg.
@@NandR I figured that was the plan, so basically Les forwarded that stuff from his own bankroll and then planned to get it back from the insurance payout. Rick foiled that and Les got the payout from Tropic Blunder instead, so that also didn't hurt him. Im my opinion, it was never really dependent on Tugg dying, that was just an 'shut the fuck up and let the dice fall as they may' bribe, that showed us the character of the two men involved.
The Tom Cruise thing - the hands were his own idea, I think he said once. And yes - when recordings of his rant came out, people immediately commented 'He just went full Les Grossman on them' :D
Dope reaction, guys! This is exactly how this movie was meant to be received, and WAS for a while, before all the nonsense. Comedy's got no boundaries, and no one demographic is "safe" in this. Which also makes it relatable to just about everybody. I feel like Tropic Thunder is much like South Park or Chappelle's Show, where the joke's on everybody. I think this movie is just objectively funny, unless you hate comedy. lol Got a sub here!
So for those that don't know, RDJ actually DID stay in character for the DVD commentary . It's more comedy gold. There's a subtlety to his dialogue as Osiris , it's always just slightly off when it comes to slang and certain phrases like "I bet I can collard up some greens"

Ben Stiller wrote, directed, improved all this movie. His whole family is from comedians. Remember in Seinfeld, Ben Stiller's dad was George Costanza's father. Both his father and mother were comedic hits back in the day so he grew up with comedy all around him.
RDJ said people were so pissed about simple Jack he got much less hate.. i didn't know that was Tom Cruise for half the movie and big hairy arms and dancing for Tom's request for the movie.
I love Jack Black, too. It's a shame how actors who start with comedy don't get the recognition from their roles, even the serious ones. And that also is the subject that JB touches in this movie.

It was always called neuro divergent..just because you choose to call them slurs instead of the actual name it doesn't mean it didn't exist lmao
@Not Me Val Kilmer 🙂
@Not Me he still _is_ phenomenal, he hasn’t gone anywhere he just doesn’t act anymore. He had surgery for throat cancer and breathes through a tube in his neck. He’s a very good painter now though.
I'm convinced that him getting Best Supporting Actor nomination was part of the joke that was this movie. Like they just kept it through.
@@ValdrianthTTRPG finally someone who thinks the same way.Meta-joke for meta-satire😂
One of the best cinematic comedies ever made. Brilliant on so many levels.
I agree 🌟
"I killed the thing I like most in the world"
" A Hooker? You killed a Hooker?"
“Amanda? Dude, that probably wasn’t even her real name!”
He did some amazing behind the scenes stuff as kirk. It's truly crazy.
I love commentary not sure how I missed it!
Bro.
Best commentary on any film ever.
When Jack Black finally shows up...😅😅😅
"Oh shit! You here? I thought you was still on the way."
@@TheSkinnychef1620 I know some may consider it dorky, but I love secondary audio tracks on DVDs after I've gotten to the point I know what all is happening in the movie. I reload my own ammunition and listen to them as I'm doing it. One, well really two, of the best are on the movie Apollo 13. Ron Howard does one, as the director. The other is from Jim Lovell and his lovely wife. I don't know which track teaches you more!
@@chadro_g1145 - It may be dorky. So what? The world could use a dose more dork if you ask me. Everyone's so damn self-righteous and over-serious. Do something you enjoy and damn the rest.
I'm many years and four kids removed from having the time to watch movies, let alone commentary, but if I stumble upon a vacation one of these days my wife and I will certainly check out Apollo
13. Thanks for the recommendation, brother.
I think the ACLU sat at a prescreening of this film to rule if what RDJ did was considered "blackface," and they ruled it wasn't. Because he was playing a person pretending to be another person disguised as another person, it was a crucial part of the story, and it was damn funny they let it ride.
Actually it's NAACP, but otherwise you're correct
@@onyhow oops
this has me curious if the one person who thought it was was rachel dolezar
You trying to tell me he was a dude playing a dude, disguised as another dude?
"Never mind, he dies first."
"Steps on a mine immediately."
"Yeah."
LITERALLY FIVE SECONDS LATER: 7:26
Can't cancel tropic thunder, it was about how ridiculous Hollywood and actors can be. RDJ played his part so perfectly. Hilarious all the way through.
Not a joke, Ben Stiller has been jacked since the 90s. Check out the movie Heavyweights, so good.
If any movie deserved a sequel, it was Heavyweights.
The “how is he moving so quickly??” Had me crying real tears cuz I’ve always thought that lmao
🤣
I remember seeing this in theaters when it first came out. To this day I have never heard a audience laugh so hard in a movie.
Same.
My cheeks hurt from laughing so hard.
Only one that came close for me was the 1st American Pie. Never heard people laugh that loudly.
Rdj really did the dvd comentary in character too. It was so funny. All the others actors were crackin up
I'm so glad ya'll mentioned the Matthew McConnaughey part at the end with the Tivo. I always found that shit hilarious how he just moved like an animated gazel on speed. It made no sense for him to suddenly be there, then to just run into the woods never to be seen again. It was the perfect nonsense ending for that bit.
Had my cheeks hurt lol
That's why he took the deal from Less, to get the G5 to fly there
It took me and my buddies half way through the movie to realize that Les was Tom Cruise, this is by far one of the best comedies to ever exist. I really hope Jamie Foxx releases All-Star Weekend, that shit would be gold!
“Yo if I see another famous person….”
Waits for the amazing Tom Cruise reveal lol
This cast was huge !!! 🔥
Hearing you say, “if I see another famous person…”, with me knowing who is still coming on screen made me subscribe on the spot. Great video :)
I just kinda came on set and made some stuff up."
-- Jack Black in the DVD commentary, describing his acting method.
27:53 is hilarious. Ive watched a lot of reactions to this movie and you're the first guys I've seen mention how fast Matthew Mcconaughey randomly starts running. When I first saw this I lost it at that.
Right no one ever notices it finally
I've literally seen this movie like 5 times including in theaters and I've never noticed this lmfao. Perfect.
@@TheSchaef47 MI3 actually underperformed at the box office according to the studio’s projections & did little to repair Cruise’s public image; which remained tarnished for most of the 00s by his affiliation to & defense of Scientology. From the moment he yelled at Matt Lauer on the Today Show for not understanding Scientology & berated Brooke Shields for taking antidepressants in 2005, pretty much until he appeared in Tropic Thunder, Cruise was considered a weirdo by the average person that had been following the news.
@@mobiusbelts3607 he's still a weirdo. But he's the last living action star.
@@TheSchaef47 He really is great at his job.
I'm glad you said that about Jack Black! I adore him and i agree he deserves more praise. Such a talented musician too!
My favorite line, "look at you, you more cut than a julienned salad. How you do it, man? You got some tips, you got some tips..... give me that g'damn map!" Best stuff ever!
🤣🤣 he’s such a goat for this role !
Some added fun, J-lo and Ludacris performed the ending song at the MTV music awards, with Tom Cruise…dressed as Les Grosman. Tom held his own dancing right next to JLo
When i watched this the first time. I literally had tears running down my face from the scene with Jack Black tied to the tree. Shit was hilarious.
...and the things he said.
The reason Matthew McConaughey was moving so fast at the end was because in the original ending he was meant to be caught, and he and the little kid leader were going to be watching the Oscars at the very end. But test audiences reacted negatively to that, so they changed it.
McConaughey dipping at the end so damn fast is probably the funniest part of this movie
It’s so fun to listen to
Robert Downey Jr, did his whole DVD commentary in character as Lincoln Osiris, just like he said in the movie. Pure Genius!
When you guys said “I feel like he’s about to die” about Steve Coogan in the beginning, I couldn’t wait for you to get to the landmine scene 😂
Was wild fam lol
Robert Downey Jr. Killed it. The satire was hilarious with all of them. Jack Black was great as well
This movie is sheer perfection - so much fun; for Ben Stiller classics it's in the same group as Zoolander.
I'd put this over Zoolander
@@kylecook7187 yeah this film is way smarter than zoolander
“He dies first, steps on a mine”……..immediately steps on mine and explodes 😂
HOLY CRAP!!! I just realized that RDJ broke the fourth wall with his "I'm a dude, playing a dude disguised as another dude."
Ben Stiller was more or less playing all of those action heroes who makes one sequel after another, like Stallone
Jack Black was playing an Eddie Murphy type actor who played every role like Murphy did in The Nutty Professor
and Robert Downey Jr was basically playing a Russell Crowe type actor
“It’s actually worse to kill a Panda… No?” LMAOOOO immediately subscribed
You can always tell a true reaction vid with this movie when the reactors get lost with the sneak previews at the beginning.
Lmao legit thought I downloaded the wrong file 🤣
Love that RDJ actually did the dvd commentary in character lol
Which character? Remember he was technically three characters in the movie.
@@gilessaint-loup2426 Sgt. Lincoln Osiris
Had us dying fam 🤣🤣
Lol always loved him just jetting off back in the jungle like a wild man
27:53: Rick got the idea when talking to Les, remember when he said 'leave him to die for some money and a (fill in model) aeroplane ?'
Thats when he figured he could take the jet and the money and use said jet to fly overseas and go help Tugg.
a true friend right there!
But I thought that hinged on Tugg dying and them collecting the insurance money.
Tropic Thunder is my favorite comedy movie ever. It has the funniest and most memorable lines ever. The whole cast kills it.
Can't wait to see you guys reacting to: "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood" - it is comedy gold.
I got these cheeseburgers man...
Robert Downey Jr nailed his part of this show. Sort of 😅
Favorite character 100%
If RDJ got his own show or movie as Kirk Lazarus I’m 100% watching 😂
Dope reaction, guys! This is exactly how this movie was meant to be received, and WAS for a while, before all the nonsense. Comedy's got no boundaries, and no one demographic is "safe" in this. Which also makes it relatable to just about everybody. I feel like Tropic Thunder is much like South Park or Chappelle's Show, where the joke's on everybody. I think this movie is just objectively funny, unless you hate comedy. lol Got a sub here!
This movie seemed to be a savage takedown of Hollywood, Actors, and the "Fame" industry. Loved it
One of the most densely layered comedies ever made. So much going on, and it's all great.
So for those that don't know, RDJ actually DID stay in character for the DVD commentary . It's more comedy gold. There's a subtlety to his dialogue as Osiris , it's always just slightly off when it comes to slang and certain phrases like "I bet I can collard up some greens"
The life of Brian please 🙏 loved the content first time watching! I’m Scottish! All the way in Glasgow love watching guys from America react to all different things seen this movie about 4 times so good laugh 😂 watching other people enjoy it 👍🏼🏴 I’ll look forward to more of your stuff 🍀
That kid, Tran, was also in an episode or two of community. He plays a kid hired by Abed to play the Spanish teacher, Chang in one of his videos. Chang is played by Ken Jeong and the kid is absolutely hilarious as him!
Nice ! Might have to check that out ! Thanks Sarah !
I really appreciate what you had to say about Jack Black.
I've seen him in some serious roles, esp in smaller films, [there are hints of his talent in even his biggest/silliest roles for anyone paying attention] the man can fucking *act.* Period.
Facts !!! Love him 💪🏽 he needs more appreciation
A cool story about him is when they started filming school of rock the parents thought he'd be some crazy dude... But he was amazing to the kids and their parents
I agree!! ❤
A white American, playing an Australian actor playing a black soldier disguised as an Asian farmer.
Ben Stiller wrote, directed, improved all this movie. His whole family is from comedians. Remember in Seinfeld, Ben Stiller's dad was George Costanza's father. Both his father and mother were comedic hits back in the day so he grew up with comedy all around him.
Ben's mom was in great comedic movie in the late 60's. The out of Towner's. Great movie! Co-starred with the great Jack Lemon!

Shoutout to recognizing Nick Nolte from Hulk with Eric Bana
You were right, the young kid that was the village leader was also the kid from Dusk till Dawn TV Show.
8:47
True to his word, RDJ did stay in character for the actual DVD commentary 😂🤣
If you want your minds blown watch this with the commentaries on from Stiller Black and Downey Jr . It is 2x the fun I swear it is pure gold.
Gotta check out Dodgeball for high tier Ben Stiller. Great "just have a good time" movie!
Unfortunately we’ve both seen that but I am showing my girlfriend it on the channel she has not so it’s coming anyway!!
People pretend this was controversial.
Truth is people loved it when it came out.
This is probably one of the best movies I've ever seen and completely agree with you on Jack Black he's SO underrated
Ben Stiller was probably the leader because this was his movie. He wrote it and directed it.
Dude the first time I watched this movie like I didn’t know that was Tom cruise, like until seriously the end credits cause the previews and everything for the movie coming to theaters didn’t show his name anywhere and I didn’t recognize him to save my life!! 😂😂😂
since it came out, it stills holds up as my favorite comedy ever made. from the jokes in the writing & performances, to the stakes of the story building up like a south park episode, even to the point that the whole movie it self is a joke making fun of Hollywood and those making it is amazing.
I remember going with a girl I liked to this movie and literally forgetting she was there til the end. I was crying from laughter. I kinda feel bad for her thinking back.
Tom Cruise in this is easily my favourite of all his performances. Was even better first time I watched as I didn't even know it was him until the credits!
watching it in theatres, everyone was clapping when the credits rolled. then the tom cruise portion came on nd the theater lost its mind! mine included. holy shit

The funny thing is, I think RDJ actually got nominated for an Oscar for this movie lol
This is perhaps Cruise's best performance ever..

In an interview with Joe Rogan; RDJ said his character was first offered to Sean Penn by Ben Stiller; but Penn refused (thankfully) ~ I think the Sean Penn insult about going full retard and not taking home an Oscar could be a stab at him for rejecting the role
