You don’t need to buy a video capture for hdmi. I connected my Canon 5D Mark III to my 2020 iMac with a USB cable that comes with the camera and with free open source software, Camera Live and Camtwist, and then I use free OBS. Works like a charm-all free.
I was planning on using the Canon webcam utility with my SL3. Problem is, the utility is not compatible with my old OS 10.11.6. So I'm forced to try using a capture card. Thank you for showing how to connect the camera to capture card and the different connections involved. The explanation cleared up my confusion.
Thanks so much running through this Zulf. The only other option for recording video from camera HDMI to an independent drive I could find was either an Atmos or Blackmagic device at $800.00. This was extremely helpful!!
Man, I ordered one of these myself thinking it was needed for my particular camera -- I have a Sony a77ii and it turns out that IF you own a Sony, you just need to download Imaging Edge Desktop. This allowed me to literally view, edit, and capture my live feed without the mess of the capture card. I want to say in some instances a capture card would be worth it like if you're going for the best quality and the highest quality. Like you said in the beginning, "learn from my mistakes." The capture card might be inexpensive but you might be able to save yourself the hassle of buying and waiting on cords or the capture card itself IF your current camera has software out there that doesn't need to card to capture the live feed. Thanks for the information in this video! I learned a lot from my own mistakes and from watching this as well.
