This comment goes out to Lon & Epos Vox. Believe it or not, the videos you made about this product helped my family during a tough time. We had a family member pass away recently and we needed a way to broadcast the funeral service on zoom (on a budget) because the service had to have a limited amount of people due to COVID restrictions. This Capture card was on amazon prime for a reasonable price and I already had a camera that worked with HDMI out & a tripod. I ordered a microphone that hooked up to my laptop and I was good to go. You wouldn't believe how thankful my family members were when they were able to watch the funeral service live and be with us digitally through this tough time. Please know that youtubers like may not have Please know that youtubers like you may not have millions of subscribers but you make a big difference. Thanks to the both of you!
Hi. Would you know if this works with a Samsung WB250F Smart Camera. This is a cheap camera that I found at home and would like to try it with this video capture card. The camera has no hdmi port.
Do you know if DSLR needs to be in the video mode for this tethering to work or could it work in the image shooting mode (well, either of them) too? I'm looking for a way to get a camera view to display on a laptop for my old Pentax K-5 camera (for photography purposes, in addition to video) and comments on the Pentax forums are mixed (some say it works with these capture cards, some say it doesn't).
Amazing that it's instantly seen as a webcam for in video meeting apps. No need for OBS or camera-specific software to enable virtual cam plugins, etc. Will be a perfect solution to recycle older cameras as easy setup webcams. Thx for sharing!
I use one of those devices for capturing HDMI for video game streaming. They're really good for the job. The colors were perfect, I was getting 1080P or 720 depending on what I was capturing, and very little loss in quality from MJPEG. If you're just streaming games and not trying to take ultra high def 4K videos for uploads, they'll definitely do the job.
Picked one up last month for £5.99 delivered (around $8 US). Been using it to digitise S-VHS tapes and Laserdiscs at 720p/60 using an s-video to HDMI convertor plugged into it, works great and captures look excellent. As an aside, I experimented and was able to capture Netflix and Amazon Prime from a Roku as it seems these devices just ignore HDCP.
Definitely considering one of these. Also really nice to see UVC drivers on these, because that allows them to just be read as a webcam by almost any device with support for UVC drivers. I would honestly stick to my Elgato for game capture, but for a "cam link" alternative, this is fantastic.
It absolutely shits me to tears that with all “integrations” apple does with its hardware that you cant use iPhone/iPad as an external webcam or to recored directly into iMovie/FCPx
Hi, just sharing this. You can now download a plug-in or software from Canon (to your Windows PC) so that you can have clean out. But I still have that China brand adapter : ) With this, I can now use my old Canon dslr as a webcam for my live streaming this month.
I didn't check the comments so this may have already been mentioned. ETA Prime has a video where he used one of these capture devices to turn just about any Android device, (including the Fire tablets) into a monitor for the Raspberry Pi. That's huge. Raspberry Pi touchscreen monitors are often not so great, expensive and don't have a battery built in. I'm only adding this because people do tend to watch Lon's videos long after they are posted. It's been out for awhile. I suspected that all of these devices on Amazon were pretty much the same. Now I know for sure. My 10" Galaxy Tab S2 with keyboard case is about to become a monitor.
I was creating a tape digitizing operation, so I have a Sony camcorder from the 90s and a VHS player. I’m thinking of getting an AV capture card. Would a vhs player have copyright protection or is it too old?

Can you please also test the newer versions you can buy with 60fps output also some of these are now usb3.0 you can buy on ebay for 7$ or something. Are they worse because of usb3?
Will these work for connecting to a Vizio tv. Recently, the Google Duo app went live for Android TV. I have tried connecting an older model usb webcam and a newer webcam to the usb ports of 2 of my Vizio TVs and they are not connecting but works great on both my computers. I'm not sure if its a software issue with Duo or a usb port issue from Vizio in regards to webcams. Wondering if the HDMI solution is my best bet.
Do you think this would this work on smartphones? Im trying to figure out how to by pass the built in camera on the smartphone and instead live stream from an external camera.
I'm using a Lumix GF9, the device is recognised and but the frame is not showing. It says "TV output" its in the menu tab or in playback mode, but when its in the normal view mode, it just displays error bars on zoom. Do you have any advise please? Much appreciated!
Hi Lon, always nice reviews! I´m Hernán from Argentina, do you know if these capture dongles support non TV standard resolutions? I usually capture video feeds from medical devices running at 1280x1024 ( not even 16:9 format)? thanks in advance and I always try to watch your reviews...
I feel like most if not all of these cameras/camcorders will be able the support a clean hdmi output. You will have to fiddle with it in the settings menu(display area)
I tried the set up on old camera Panasonic Lumix GF2 and Olympus Tough TG1 camera and it does not capture "live video". I know the capture card is working because I was able to see the photos I have taken but when I exit to see "the live", the capture card just shows rainbow screen. If anyone have encounter this and have a fix, could you please share how you were able to make it work. Thank you so much.
Hi, Great video and thank you for it. Would it be possible to capture from a Region Free DVD player, not Copyrighted material just regular PAL footage?
It really depends on the camera. Some will do a clean output, others will not. I had an old Sony Camcorder for example that would output cleanly except for the automated face recognition.
These capture cards are supposedly good for VHS transfers as well. Got one + an AV2HDMI upscaler for less than $50. A lot cheaper than the Canopus type machines that are about $200.
I have SJ8 Pro and I can't find any way to connect pc as a webcam , without battery. There's no softaware to do this. Can I buy a Type-C to HDMI Cable and connect that HDMI to capture card, and can i use as a webcam for non-stop OBS recording or stream ? Can anyone help me ? :)
Hey Lon - can you do the UCEC CAM NOVA Capture Card next? I think it's relatively new, but good reviews so far and it's less than $20 which is crazy to me as a competitor to the Elgato Cam Link 4K. Thanks!
Got one of these cheap capture cards myself. I've found a lot of use for them, though they do have their own limitations and quirks. Biggest issue I've found is that they aren't exactly 30/60fps, which over time can cause sync issues or frame duplicating/skipping.
@@LonSeidman I looked into it, and the 1080p60fps models are actually outputting 60.002fps, which obviously it's not something most software and displays are designed to work with. 30fps models report 30fps, but I have a suspicion that they aren't being truthful of that.
not just that but if you ever left your phone camera on for a while the phone will get superhot after just 10 mins. They're just not designed to be running that long and I remember on my gfs android phone the charger couldn't charge it faster than it would discharge lol
