I remember when I was a teenager in Miami, me and my friends would go out to Homestead to see illegal drag races on Tuesdays, in the middle of the night. People would be out there racing their new IROC's, Mustang 5.0's, Firebird Formula 350's, Trans Am GTA, Corvettes, Chrysler Conquest Turbo, 300ZX Turbo... You would see some guys racing their Buick Grand Nationals and Regal T-Types; cars that were only a few years old at that time. Always full of spectators, everybody taking a bath in mosquito repellent. I remember one guy with an 1990 IROC-Z, brand NEW!! The wheel wells weren't even dirty yet! It still had the manufacturer window sticker attached and a temporary tag from Anthony Abraham Chevrolet! He was out there racing! I'll never forget; I peeked inside of it real quick... That Camaro had 61 miles on the odometer!!!
stclairstclair Nah, man. Get one of them 5.7 Irocs and put drag radials, headers, exaust, ran air intake, a ZZ4 cam and for about 15 grand.... You can play along just fine.
I owned a '89 IROC, 305 TPI automatic in the early 2000's. I really enjoyed that car ! It was quick and handled very well. It was my daily driver in the summer months. I also had a 2000, WS6 Trans Am for weekend cruising.
It's possible it had the timing advance a bit, or some small chip difference. GM was known to "tweek" things. Then again, so were owners. My 1991 Z/28 w/ 5.7 was a consistent 5.8, 5.9sec 0-60 car on the street using the Vericom VC2000 performance testing computer Motorweek used - yes, I bought one back in the late 80's. Never did take the car to the drag strip, though.
Stock had a better low end torque curve which gave it enhanced 0-30 time over the race car. Race car has a high revving engine w/o variable valve timing in those days so low end power was comparatively poor. It also looks like from the figures that the stock car was either juiced up by the manufacturer for media testing or significantly under-rated in power.
doesn't help that the race car peeled out for a good while right off the bat. traction is everything. for me, a good start made the difference over a second in the quarter. also check the video of the hellcat vs Tesla. the hellcat spins through like 3rd gear, runs 17.something seconds in the quarter...lol
I had a 87 trans am gta. buried the needle on a 140mph speedo. came all the way back around to 5mph before it started to over heat. and that was the 700R4 4 speed automatic 3.23 rear gear version. don't believe anything till you try it!
Got a 86 TA WS6 two months ago a resto project. Pontiac's answer to the IROC. Four wheel discs, Borg rear, 16 inch wheels, large sway bars, TPI engine.......
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 well, it did it. Itwas not a stock one as well. 230 horsepwer? that seems a little under-rated for that car i would have guessed it had around 260-270 horsepower but its a very nice car i wouldn't mind having it myself
The tpi cars don’t rev high enough for a lot of hp but low end torque they do have. The 305 5-speed got the biggest cam they put in a tpi engine and is notoriously one of the fastest tpi cars/engines.
