Kenny, you're most likely going to see that car back in a month or two. That engine is suffering from VCM (Variable Cylinder Management "ECO" cylinder pause) induced oil burning, plug fouling, and ring sticking. This happens on cylinders 1-4 as they are the ones that are shut down during cylinder pause. Check Alldata as there are numerous bulletins out on these J35 engines for re-ringing the cylinders 1-4 to resolve it. However, defeating the VCM (using a VCMuzzler, VCMTuner or similar device) and replacing the plugs will allow the engine to run on all 6 cylinders and will usually clean up the rings over time and resolve it. An oil additive to help clean up the rings might be helpful, as well, but usually defeating the VCM will resolve it and allow that engine to give many more miles of service.
The video was fine, I did fast forward it. As a retired technician, I already knew to do plugs and LOF. Everyone needs to learn somewhere, and you show it well.
Great job. Had to laugh near the end when the door was chiming, sounds identical to my old 88 Accord. Some things never change. Liked the longer video.
I can't say I'm a fan of the longer videos. I watch your videos for education. An hour out of my life is just generally too much. I realize I'm only one vote. Keep the good stuff coming.
I watch a lot of long videos. The secret for me is too watch them at the highest speed where I can still comprehend and retain everything. You would be surprised what a difference 1.25 and 1.5 playback speed makes. Most long videos I play at 1.75 or 2.00. I watched this video at 2.00.
Thanks for longer video. I never throw out the old extensions for when i need a really long one. The plug gap would only stay at where it was set going in for a short while anyway. I use a rubber hose to set the plugs back in the hole , then the socket for the hand torque. VW uses that rubber plug at the top of the coil that causes more headache than Honda’s studs and nuts. I have left tools or parts under the hood and went back under the hood looking for the rattle
Kenny, It’s the VCM that is deactivating the rear bank of cylinders. The bores are becoming glazed. This will happen again. Eventually the rings will freeze and send more oil to the cat. Do your customer a solid and deactivate that dang VCM. There is a product called the muzzler 2 that will fix this. Enjoyed Vid.
NGK says not to coat the threads with an antisieze compound. The plugs are already treated. Plus it throws off the torque readings. But as always a great video.
Misfire Honda if nothing obvious is found=time for a valve adjustment and you'll find them tight every time. Plus, cleaning the EGR passages in the intake is a good thing while you're there. Nice work Kenny!
Great video and very informative. Just completed the winter full service on our 1978 MG Midget. It's a lot simpler to work than modern cars, but it's great fun to work on and drive. Thanks for all your videos.
That customer was lucky that it was a bad plug. I chased a misfire all the way back to my PCM recently. Thank goodness for private companies selling used replacements for much less than the dealer. Thanks Kenny, I will indeed "Keep Wrenching"
One side benefit to the longer video(s) is that I've come to the realization that even searsoned professionals such as yourself often have to ride the struggle bus with small spaces, cramped fingers, and aching lower backs just like us old timer shade tree wrenchers. Thanks for your expertise and easy going attitude. Best, Jack
Yep.. Good ol honda vcm. ! New plugs will help for awhile but with that mileage the vcm activation will foul them fairly soon. Rear bank on v6 . Along with glazed cylinder walls and Honda extreme low-tension rings that engine will destroy the cats. [ oil !]. If the engine is shaking it's due to the constant misfire shaking the motor mounts and destroying them.
Check internet... several ways to disable vcm. Honda knows of the problem but no recalls I know of. Cat 'efficiency ' codes are caused by the oil contaminating the cat.
I personally like the longer video. I also prefer changing spark plugs on a Honda/Acura 3.5 liter over a GM 3.6 liter. Having to remove the intake on a GM is a bit of a pain.
I’ll go along with the majority on length of video. I’m sure it’s helpful for someone doing the task on a specific vehicle. The jobs not done correctly though unless you’ve dropped a foul word or two. Keep on Wrenching Kenny
I liked this longer video especially since I own this same vehicle. I leave the engine cover off because mice love to sit under it and eat nuts and poop there. I was going to change the spark plugs as they are about due for a change and now I know what I am getting into. I check my oil regularly and noticed the dip stick has to be pushed in until it clicks in place for it to be seated to get a good reading. Thanks for the tips. I enjoy your demeanor and your tips.
With a Honda or Acura V6, you have to synchronize the plugs, timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt (if needed) and definitely valve adjustment On top of the coolant and oil change With the valve cover off, may as well put new valve cover seals and check that plastic pcv for brittleness 😊
Hey Kenny you only got 2 cycles on the cylinder that you were pressure testing. As far as I know they recommend at least 3 cycles for a cylinder reading.
You should have said “no need to check the gap NOWADAYS “ years ago I had a metro “a Uk car” that I couldn’t get the emissions down, it turned out to be on the economy model the plug gap was different to the standard model and the customer had fitted new plugs to pass the emissions test but had gaped them to standard!
👍😎👍 I diagnosing this misfire .. I get moving the coil packs and sparkplugs .. Do you also measure the ohms in your bad plug to your new plug...just to check..??
That engine has a service bulletin for piston rings clogging due to cylinder management. The fix is the Re-ring the back three cylinders 1-3 and possibly the number 4 if compression is low. Cylinders 5-6 do not deactivate so they are not affected. plugs will last 15-20 thousands miles and will repeat concern once fouled. BUT the cost of spark plugs every 15-20k is way cheaper than a Re-ring. Choose wisely.
When mounting the engine cover, line up the front two "widgets" first and the rear plugs will also line up. You can then just press easily on the rear to seat the cover.
You & Mrs Wrenching must be telepathically connected. She said the same thing. Now, she gets to figure out how to do that 🤓 Thanks for watching & Keep wrenching 🔧

I don't like to suggest to you content makers how long your videos should be. I can tell you that one of the things I have liked best about your videos is that the havent beat around the bush and wasted my time. Whenever I change oil I always fill the filter and put new oil on the filter O-ring/gasket/seal because if you use used oil it tends to lock the filter on and then someone will complain of the filter being to tight.
