I remember in the theater after Bilbo said “what have we done?” and the screen went black, a really fat guy screamed out
“WHAT? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!”
Can we’re an ‘F’ for that guy?

This made my jaw drop before infinity war
Bro I think we were in the same theater then...
that was bloody me when i realize i had to wait for another movie ;--;
the way he shouted:"revenge revenge I will show you revenge"it give me creeps, then:"i am fire i am death" gived me the chills, the whole scene is absolutely epic
"Ah! It burns! Revenge! I WILL SHOW YOU REVENGE!!!"

Benedict Cumberbatch
Niall MacLeod what? Smaug looked great.
@@bunnysuicides99 Not awful.Just ok,nothing more,nothing less
In the theatre that final “I am DEATH” could be felt through your entire body 😩😩😩
I just love how a dragon like smaug needs to hype himself up to burn a village down. Like the dude inner thoguht must be like "dude you got this, your smaug"
Maybe he needed motivation before he got bored
I think it’s more like psychotic monologuing, kind of like “eat this!” that some people say.
Lmaoooo
You got this you got this you’re a wizard you’re a fire throwing wizard you’re a hero and you look great
"My ego talks to me. He be like 'YOU THE MAN!'"
Imagine if this had worked. That someday Dwarven parents would take their Dwarven children through the Golden Hall of Erebor, and explain to them that the corpse of a dragon laid beneath that floor, buried beneath the gold forged into a statue of their former king? How poetic would that be, the knowledge that a statue made in the image of the king who's realm was destroyed by Smaug, was also the cause of his death?
Imagine if the dragon flew out halfway before the gold solififies and then u got a sick dragon statue

@@countlazuli8753 lol
Is that a compliment or an insult, mortal?
@@smaugthegolden615 I think that’s an insult.
Gold is a heavy metal. The fact that Smaug could take off in the air with that much liquid gold weighing him down shows just how powerful he is.
No... it shows how awful this movie is !!
And to think Smaug is the weakest of his race
It shows the plot holes of this movie!
@@insanidadeEspelhada well you try making a better movie
Lets not also forget that thats melted gold, which is still burning hot
I love how entranced the gold made smaug almost as if it was hypnotizing him. They targeted his single weakness and it worked to a certain degree.
They succeeded in pissing him off.
I think hypnotism due to the gold appealing to his natural draconic urges is the only viable explanation for why Smaug stood there staring at it and doing nothing, considering how cunning dragons like him are supposed to be.
If by “worked” you mean “backfired horrifically.”
He reminded me of a curious cat.
I say it worked to a couple of degrees, just not enough degrees. Maybe a couple 10,000 more.

Benedict does such a great job as Smaug
And not only as Smaug, his Sauron was goated too!
-I AM FIRE
-I AM DEATH
-I WILL DIE IN THE FIRST 10 MINUTES OF THE NEXT MOVIE
Think he meant to say "I AM DEAD"
In the book his death was underwgelming as well, at least to me
I am DARKSIED
He destroyed an entire town and most of it's people before Bard got off one lucky shot that hit the only place that could take it down. In the books it's way cooler. Since he was on top of so much treasure for so long the gold and gems stick into his undersides and give him armour, yet there is one tiny spot not covered which Bilbo spots and tells the dwarfs. A thrush overhears this and flies to Lake Town and tells Bard.
Way to powerful to be kept alive
The plan was decent. Molten metal is very very hot and deadly. Unfortunately for them, Smaug is a dragon.
But it hurt, you can hear smaug yelling "it burns!"
it burned him but only 1st degree, he could keep going and keep destroying
@@jackenglish5777 No he says 'Revenge'. Twice.
To be fair, the plan wasn't all that decent. The dwarves had to rely on the fact Smaug would be mesmerised and stand still long enough for the gold to melt and fall onto him (perhaps that genuinely happens with all dragons in this universe when they see something huge and made of gold, and if anyone would know it it would be dwarves due to their history fending off dragons in the Grey Mountains). Plus Smaug is a fire dragon - trying to kill him with heat isn't much smarter than trying to blind Shelob by going into pitch-blackness. Guess the dwarves were actually desperate with this plan (no-one cheered and they all seemed on baited breath before Smaug burst out of the gold), and that confident tone and wide-eyed look in Thorin's eyes was a sign of how badly the dragon-sickness was affecting his judgement.
@@ecthox-1mork909 I think they expected to let the metal harden and then the dragon would be buried alive in golden plate. Unfortunately, Smaug freed himself earlier.
Benedict's voice acting of Smaug made me love the dragon. I always get goosebumps when he says "I Am Fire, I Am Death"
The line was not even supposed to be there - i believe it was part of the huricane line - you Can see it in the appendix of the extended edition
I knew I recognized the voice from somewhere
It's perfect
Benedict nailed it
I’m going to be honest, I loved every second of the Hobbit trilogy. And the scenes with Smaug are perhaps some of the best I’ve seen in a movie. With his intelligence, his charisma, the sheer terror that resonates off of him every time he speaks shows that as a character, he is both memorable and iconic. I honestly went into this movie thinking Smaug was going to be just a big dumb dragon, but never in my life did I ever think that he would start talking with such intensity, even though half the time he’s speaking softly. But the soft-spoken but intense nature of Smaug is what makes him so terrifying, because he speaks from a place of power with the fact that the only thing that can hurt or kill him is a black arrow and only one was left, so there was no way someone like Bilbo could do anything against him, much less a pack of Dwarves who only succeeded in pissing him off. And I had no issue with the fact that this movie ended so abruptly, because waiting a year to watch The Battle of the Five Armies was so worth the effort.
Same

Honestly, I prefer the hobbit trilogy over lotr :)
I like the Hobbit too. At the worst, they're a fun prequel to LOTR. And they don't subtract anything from the trilogy.
@@TheAwesomeDarkNinja They really don't. In fact, I think they add a lot of context to the already existing story of LOTR. And I can't wait until The Rings of Power comes out. The trailer looks amazing.

@@medinamaldonado6690 Who would win?
I like how he just completely forgets about the death threat for a moment to admire the awesome workmanship.
He is a dragon after all.
It’s a fairly common trope in literature that the only way to beat someone or something that is op and sentient is to take advantage of glaring flaws. Prometheus relies on Zeus’ arrogance to steal fire, Harry Potter used Voldemort’s obsession with him to distract him, Luke used Vader’s conflict to undermine Palpatine long enough to guarantee the Death Star II’s destruction. In this case they hoped to use Smaug’s greed to destroy him.
@Valentin de las Carreras Nah. Smaug loved artifacts. Otherwise he'd have melted it all down.
dragons, especially corrupted ones, in older lore are obsessed with treasure most especially gold.
It's not too different with crows and shiny things, but significantly stronger and with a heavy touch of greed.
That huge shiny chunk of gold will instantly seize smaugs attention no matter the craftsmanship.
*Big shiny thing*
Because he’s a greedy b***h

Absolutely my favorite movie ending ever, regardless of the fact that it's a cliffhanger. Quite possibly my favorite line in the whole movie. "I am fire. I am... DEATH." So Awesome!
I prefer Gamera 3's ending. Best cliffhanger. Although this one does come close. The only downside is that there was a continuation after the scene but there is no Gamera 4
It doesn't really matter if a movie actually has a cliff hanger when it is made right. In this case they definitely did a fine job.

I remember seeing this in a sold out theatre opening night back in 2013. As soon as the screen went to black everyone in attendance immediately began shouting in awe because we knew the second chapter was over, and we had another entire year to see the ending of the story. Such a blast and great memory.

I'd love to see them in Amazon's version.
Eh Ancalagon didn't even do much in the book except being described as big as a mountain and that he got defeated by Ëarendil. Glaurung on the other hand had a huge part in the Silmarillion, i'd love to see his character on screen. He was even more manipulative than Smaug. King of all dragons

And Drogon
Guess you never saw Dragonslayer.
roguexxrenegade I completely agree. The hobbit trilogy may be flawed but it has its charms.
The reason the orcs and generally CGI is so awful in The Hobbit compared to LOTR is because they overspent on Smaug.

Smaug > GoT dragons
SirDurok97 yes but those dragons are still growing and are only children
Yes but they have no personality and their "mother" Emilia clarke is a horrible actress.
Samug and GoT dragons are very different creatures. While Smaug is like an anthropomorphic dragon, more like a human (he speaks and wants gold), GoT dragons are more like wild animals, loyal to their "mother", they behave like the animals they are.
I think there's no one better, both are really good :)
Sauron riding Smaug vs Night King riding Viserion? A battle of Ice and Fire LOL

How pissed do you think Smaug was when he realized he had a giant gold statue that he didn’t even know about.
The dwarves created it just then as a lure for Smaug, using all of the gold the Dragon had stolen.

Huh. The "Hobbit"-Films continue to come under a lot of criticism, but everyone seems to like Smaug. :)
I'm actually okay with there being several films. Keeping the LotR-Films in mind, a simple straight adaptation of the Hobbit-Book wouldnt have cut it, this had to become a Prequel too. But I agree, the pacing is pretty slow in parts and there is stuff that shouldnt have been made
Schwatvogel I think it would have done better with less padding and if they made it two movies instead of three
Schwatvogel it’s because they compare them to the Star Wars prequels and sequels
I don't think the pacing is the issue; the first 2 hobbit films were great. The last one was butchered BECAUSE there was not enough info and it went by too FAST.
@fluffimator Why? The more time we spend in middle earth, the better.
The part where Bard says "Do you not know what is coming?" queing Smaug in with the music, the scenery, and his awesome voice saying those iconic lines. Gosh dang it gives me goosebumps every time. Especially how he draws out the last word. And every 'beat' after that: the growl, Bilbo saying "What have we done?" and the deep boom at the end. Fricking GOLD. I know people rag on "The Hobbit" movies for their many inconsistencies with the book, but this, this scene here... it perfectly portrays the situation. Beautiful.

I remember seeing this as a kid, this line at the end of the film really affected me in the sense that i was enamored with belief that Smaug was truly Fire and Death. Having seen parts of LOTR and my dad explaining what the Fellowship was about, I understood how Dragons were both kinda the same and different in alot of medieval fiction. But i never imagined or thought of a Dragon as a Conqueror, more like a God-King with hints of immortal mysticism. And Smaug IS all of those things, but idk, when he specifically calls himself Death, then cuts back to the lake-town, and you compare all of his other destructions, the only feeling you are almost FORCED to feel are Dread, and that is what makes Smaug terrifying, he’s undeniably dreadful

Actually the portrayal of the Smaug and the fact that he was a talking dragon and that he had a personality was my absolute favorite thing from the whole Hobbit franchise. Benedict Cumberbatch did a killer job by making those vocals so deep, angry, scary and meaningful. He really was the man to do it. It’s beyond my understanding how he managed to do those kinds of vocals. A round of applause for him. Fun fact but the reason smaug went after lake town wasn't just pure hatred or anger it was more of jealousy and resentment that bilbo mentioned barrel riding and he was actually talking of the barrels from the elven kingdom but smaug assumed the barrels from lake town so he thought the townsfolk helped the dwarves to infiltrate his lair. That is the reason why he went after the town to deal a deadly blow to both lake town and to humiliate and strike deep into the hearts of the drarves so they feel guilty for the lake towns assistance

To be honest I am not a fan of the Hobbit movies, but you can't deny the amazing portrayal of Smaug they delivered. I think he's my favourite dragon in cinematic history. I never thought a talking dragon would work, but oh man, it works so well. He is absolutely terrifying and badass, not only because he's so strong but also because he's so intelligent. What's even more amazing is that Benedict was doing this in a 3D capture suit, so Smaug's gesticulations are his. Also, either of Smaug's wings have the same span as a 747's from end to end. He big.
The cliffhanger left by this in the theater was an experience like none other, being there on the day it released and it ending like that was crazy to say the least

*When you first jump in the Hot Tub*
brendylsmurf Cunningham did a brilliant portrayal of smaug
I like that when smaug saw the golden statue, he was just amazed.
I love how mesmerized he is by the golden statue
I actually feel sorry for smaug he was just doing his thing
that pissed Smaug off a lot
Masterful by cumberbatch - how “it burns” sounds so agonize and naturally morphs into “revenge” in a truly psychotic sounding scream
I am fire, I am...
BATMAN
God dammit
I remember seeing this in theaters with my dad. Smaug's words and the cut to black gave me goosebumps. And knowing that I'd have to wait a year for the conclusion was unbearable lol
This ending gave me chills
I *love* Smaug's portrayal, so much media out there portrays dragons as mindless fire breathing lizards, or in the case of Game of Thrones big fire breathing puppies.
In proper fantasy dragons are some of *the* strongest, intelligent, cunning and wise creatures that exist, sometimes even being able to cast spells and take human form.
In DnD in particular alot of the strongest creatures are dragons, some even above the strongest demons and angels.
WoW is oddly an example of good dragon portrayal, since they are pretty much forces of nature and can take humanoid forms.
I love this scene! I watched it when it came out, and now years later during quarantine Ive been watching all the movies! The desolation of Smaug was my fav movie from the hobbit!
i just knew somebody is gonna say "what have we done", and when camera panned on bilbo i said it just a second before bilbo did and at the cinema, people beside me asked where have i seen it because it was 1st show, lol it was funny
Lmao
0:47 I like how shocked Smaug looks.
Smaug: I am fire...I am Death
King Ghidorah: and I am the Devil with 3 heads
