@@gangstagamegangstagame4467 I suggest you speak to Tolkien (assuming you can go back in time) and condemn him for not dedicating enough time to him in the books. The dragons in Game of Thrones, while visually impressive, are basically just massive pets taking orders from its precious mommy
@@CheeseRunner That too. But, also, remember, Bard partially killed Smaug because his kids were in Laketown and Smaug was implicitly stating how he was going to burn Bain along with everyone in Laketown.
Will forever love the moment Bard calms his son who is obviously terrified. Such a tender moment that really shows their father/son relationship. Like even in the heat of battle and all that chaos he is still a parent. Say what you will with regards to the movies but the changes they did with Bards character were brilliant. He went from a gruff, kind of moody side character who just kills Smaug to an actual character with motivation. He's a family man, and the imagery of him killing the Dragon with an arrow shot from his son's shoulders shows this off so well. It's such a short scene but one of my favorites.
Completely agree. This scene actually puts a lump in my throat every time i watch it. The trilogy had so many beautiful, poignant, and powerful moments (like this one), the only problem it had was that PJ and co. did not show wisdom regarding what to add vs. what to do without. It resulted in too much unnecessary fluff, which took away from moments like this.
@@tangerinetech5300 in this case it fits hes the perfect foil to smaug a family man with nothing kills the dragon with literal mountains of gold going meta family outlasts wealth
Kinda like in movies or games where the whole story revolves around the meguffin or ancient place and they destroy it in the end, looking at you Uncharted series....
That wasn't Smaug's only weakness. His other weakness was his having a big mouth and being so smug, self-obsessed and arrogant that he felt like no one could kill him and that no mere human would be a match for him. As others have pointed out, he still could have killed both Bard and his son if he hadn't spent so much time talking and if he weren't so in love with the sound of his own voice and if he knew when to shut the hell up.
+Peli Sotilas Not all fantasy/mythological reptiles necessarily need to have four distinct legs, one head, purely reptilian features, bat wings, and fire breath to be called a Dragon. Fafnir from the Norse Tales does not usually have wings and breaths poisonous fumes instead of fire. Chinese dragons were large serpent-like creatures with mammalian traits, that had god-like powers and flew by controlling the wind around them and using it to carry themselves aloft. Ladon of Greek Mythology has over 100 heads and sometimes no legs at all. And then there's all the ancient sea dragons that came before the popular image of a Western Medieval dragon. Even then, I heard some of Middle Ages men made no distinction between Wyverns and Dragons, so depending on the mythos, a Wyvern can be an actual type of dragon (like drakes and wyrms) or merely an unrelated dragon-like creature.
I hate, hate, HATE how they reduced Smaug to basically a tertiary character in the movies. They should have taken away some screen time from Azog (who wasn't even in the damn book) and given it to Smaug.
StillersRock This film was based on the 13th to 19th chapters of the book, and it obviously starts at chapter 14. Chapter 13's events take place later in the film.
Well they had to make the movies more "exciting" somehow, which is why they put in Legolas, Azog and whatshername elf. The movies themselves weren't as good as the book, and frankly shit on it a bit, but so did the LoTR trilogy. Why else do you think Christopher Tolkein hates the films..
As soon as I saw him die in the theater I was like "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BARD YOU TOWN SAVING BASTARD! You took away the best Dragon in history!"
What makes me mad is how Bard managed to make a ballista out of two pieces of wood that he jammed into the wooden pillars with his bare hands. Not only did he manage to stick them there, not only did it hold an improvised bowstring, it was strong enough to shoot a steel arrow into a jet-sized dragon and kill him. Bard got some mad woodworking skills.
And still he couldn't find a simple wooden beam to rest the arrow on, so he had to endanger his son. The fletching and maybe the bowstring would totally have hit his son in the neck and severely injured him.
Smaug was played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who also plays Sherlock Holmes. The Master of Laketown played Microft Holmes (Sherlock Holmes’ brother) in the Robert Downey Jr. film. So in a weird funny way, Sherlock Holmes crushed his brother and both died. lol
If I hear someone say that cinematography doesn’t matter if it’s CGI I refer to this shot 2:25 Seeing the lonely mountain behind Smaug as he dies and then falls is really breathtaking. I wish this trilogy was this consistently good
Bard used the last of the black arrow to avenge his father, Lord Girion's failure. It was his destiny to kill Smaug, everyone thought Girion failed when he managed to only pierce the dragon's scale, but Smaug wasn't supposed to die then, the mountain had to fall. Thorin's grandfather Thrór, had to reap the result of his limitless pride and boundless greed for gold- fate had to run its course. Thorin thought his destiny was to reclaim the mountain and its riches, but it was really to save middle earth. Like every one of us, he didn't believe in himself, his destiny, he couldn't see why they kept going through everything, at every turn, another door opened when all seemed closed. He didn't see the grand design, even Gandalf didn't know why he wanted to help Thorin. In the end, Thorin realizes that Bilbo was the most important of them all, despite his little stature. This Tolkien was a genius storyteller, there's a message he wanted to deliver.
"Arrow! Black arrow! I have saved you to the last. You have never failed me and I have always recovered you. I had you from my father and he from of old. If ever you came from the forges of the true king under the Mountain, go now and speed well!"
It became a running gag in our roleplay community: ''It's a dragon!" ''don't worry, i have a plan! I need a broken bow A black arrow And. A. Child. Now, where is that missing scale?"
You must waste many children. The rope that you have to pull back to shoot the arrow would always smack of the head of each child. So you need one child for every single shot.
Andrew Allen realism issues aside it was such a good moment of a father protecting his son and avenging his ancestors...you know the son felt intense fear but he trusted his father
The best part of this scene wasn’t even Smaug, but Bard telling his son “look at me. You look at me…” He knew how terrified he was, and knew only the look of confidence on his father’s face was going to calm him enough to take the shot.
I hate how they killed Smaug in the first 5 mins of the movie. All that hype from "i am fire i am death" and then they pull this shit. They gave screentime who wasnt even in the damn book. the hobbit is about the dragon not orgs smh. still a good movie
joshua ashley Originally Jackson wanted to do only 2 movies. The first ending with Smaug defeat. Then the producers asked him to make a trilogy and so he had to put Smaug defeat at the start of the third one.
the problem is not they killed him in the first 5 mins of the movie, the problem is they didn't killed him in the end of the second one... But this scene was extremely expensive though... not sure if producer would have allow that.
bro why is his voice so god damn intimidating how is he that intimidating like i have seen tons and tons of huge creatures on screen no one is as intimidating as smaug benedict did phenomenal job
What's funny to me is that not only did Smaug know about the ring, saying "something precious" to Bilbo, but he also knew of Gollum. In addition, he was the reason that Sauron was not trying anything yet. He did not march upon Middle-Earth until after Smaug's defeat which shows that he did not want to piss him off.
Actually the entire reason Gandalf had Thorin and company try and reclaim the mountain is because he was afraid of a potential alliance of Sauron and Smaug. Smaug would’ve been a game changer for Sauron so Gandalf decided Smaug needed to go
Just realized this revisiting this scene. It seems that because Bard believed the account of his ancestors that there was a scale loosened under Smaug’s left wing, he knew exactly where to look and was confident that his strategy would work.
Well it was actually becuase when Smaug was showing bilbo his "impenetrable belly" he unintentionally revealed that weak spot, which a thrush (small bird) saw and relayed the information to Bard as Smaug was attacking Laketown. That's how he knew where to look to find the weakspot. Its in the books too. And older movies.
Dragons in Middle Earth had a lot of power with their words like Saruman, and could cast spells with their gaze. Glaurung, the original dragon, was very snake-like, and his words were literally poison and filled people with despair and doubt. Smaug probably inherited this power in some way. Whenever he speaks, it's full of arrogant taunting which makes his foes doubt themselves.
Even Smaugs dying scream is terrifying, that first deep gasp was truly terrifying with his voice. You could tell the arrow made it into his heart. Even his violent crash into the burning structures before rising up into the air frantically with his tongue lolled out, clinging for life. That being said Bard is a hero in many ways than just one, can you imagine how much leather he's just got the entire town???????? How could you trade those scales for???? Smaug was fire proof and his body likely has traces of gold after he was submerged in it earlier. It's a pay day all round.
Actually it was left alone canonically, since the area was said to be cursed due to Smaug, and because it would be impossible to retrieve Smaugs body from the lake so his body was left there far below the surface, where his bones stayed forever.
I may be different from everyone else, but as a Ranger main in RPGs and MOBAs who has clutched many games.. 0:13 is what resonated to me the most. .. I can recall almost tearing up in the theater whispering "I will snipe you down." And snipe him down the bowman did.

I understand people's complaints about how much got changed, I really do. I even get a bit of the same feeling (being a LOTR/Tolkien fanatic myself). But, I find myself asking, especially in hindsight, did this trilogy entertain me? The answer is a resounding yes. Is it a good adaption? Heck no. But honestly, for a trilogy that had to try and raise the stakes on a short kid's adventure story, as well as follow up the greatest Fantasy trilogy of all time, I think that this was alright.
It's a pale shadow of the story Tolkein wrote. That's because Jackson is a technical wizard, but he's a poor story teller. When a poor story teller changes the story of a genius, the result is poor.
@@fjccommish what I have heard, after writing Lord of the rings, Tolkien was troubled with his Hobbit story. He felt that the link between Hobbit and LoTRo sagas was not perfect. For examble some characters status was different when you compare them between stories.

It’s a shame that Smaug had so little screen time in The Desolation and The Five Armies. Benedict Cumberbatch really captured the performance
Well why don't you just go make a time machine and force jrr Tolkien to write more of him
Yeah and idiots still like to complain how this scene is “excessive” when they also complain about how little screen time Smaug got.
Even in book his time is short
I do think he got plenty of screen time in the Desolation of Smaug but in the ballet of the five armies he got too little he got killed off in the first 10 minutes of the film considering he is the main villain of the trilogy.
@@gangstagamegangstagame4467 I suggest you speak to Tolkien (assuming you can go back in time) and condemn him for not dedicating enough time to him in the books. The title "the five armies" strongly points to the fact the movie was going to involve competing interests fighting over the treasure, which means Smaug either died or flew away. So we have to assume Smaug won't get much screen time in the 3rd movie.

Essa Al-Azzawy yes agreed bro smaug is the most beautiful dead dragon. Drogon is still alive tho.
vishesh shah What I think makes Smaug the most beautiful apart from his appearance is the fact that he is intelligent, greedy, cruel, arrogant and vain, God complex, and pure evil. Not to mention can actually speak and engages in conversation. Takes orders from nothing and no one. And does as he pleases.
The dragons in Game of Thrones, while visually impressive, are basically just massive pets taking orders from its precious mommy

A lot of monsters in films don’t scare me, but Smaug is genuinely terrifying and chilling. Benedict Cumberbatch does such a good job.
The moment you realize Bard's reason for having Bain face him:
So that if he died, the last thing he saw was his father.
Nah, it's so he wouldn't freak out by watching a huge dragon charging at him and ruin Bard's only shot.
@@CheeseRunner That too. But, also, remember, Bard partially killed Smaug because his kids were in Laketown and Smaug was implicitly stating how he was going to burn Bain along with everyone in Laketown.

2:10 love those pained, agonizing, dying screams of his.
The changes suck everyone doesn't need to be a family man with backstory
@@tangerinetech5300 in this case it fits hes the perfect foil to smaug a family man with nothing kills the dragon with literal mountains of gold going meta family outlasts wealth

I read the book a long time but doesn’t Smaug have gold plate except for his one weakness?
From half a mile away.
That wasn't Smaug's only weakness.
His other weakness was his having a big mouth and being so smug, self-obsessed and arrogant that he felt like no one could kill him and that no mere human would be a match for him.

You mean Wyvern? Because Wyverns only have two legs and wings acting like the front legs.
+Peli Sotilas
Not all fantasy/mythological reptiles necessarily need to have four distinct legs, one head, purely reptilian features, bat wings, and fire breath to be called a Dragon.

One of the most soul satisfying scenes.. and soul satisfying moment when the arrow hits the weak spot
IllidanBlade girion was bards ancestor, not his father
"Arrow! Black arrow! I have saved you to the last. You have never failed me and I have always recovered you. I had you from my father and he from of old. If ever you came from the forges of the true king under the Mountain, go now and speed well!"

It became a running gag in our roleplay community:
''It's a dragon!"
''don't worry, i have a plan!

A black arrow
And. A. Child.
Now, where is that missing scale?"
You must waste many children. The rope that you have to pull back to shoot the arrow would always smack of the head of each child. So you need one child for every single shot.
Bard was like the McGyver of LOTR! I bet he could also make a megaphone, with nothing but an old piece of string, a squirrel, and a megaphone :D
CHEERS! To the greatest dad in Middle Earth!
Andrew Allen realism issues aside it was such a good moment of a father protecting his son and avenging his ancestors...you know the son felt intense fear but he trusted his father
The best part of this scene wasn’t even Smaug, but Bard telling his son “look at me. You look at me…”
He knew how terrified he was, and knew only the look of confidence on his father’s face was going to calm him enough to take the shot.

@@Ember2168both sound pretty cool to me
Dragons in Middle Earth had a lot of power with their words like Saruman, and could cast spells with their gaze. Glaurung, the original dragon, was very snake-like, and his words were literally poison and filled people with despair and doubt.
Smaug probably inherited this power in some way. Whenever he speaks, it's full of arrogant taunting which makes his foes doubt themselves.
Maybe that's the inspiration for the Thuum of the dragons of Skyrim?
Even Smaugs dying scream is terrifying, that first deep gasp was truly terrifying with his voice. You could tell the arrow made it into his heart. Even his violent crash into the burning structures before rising up into the air frantically with his tongue lolled out, clinging for life. Smaug was fire proof and his body likely has traces of gold after he was submerged in it earlier. It's a pay day all round.
