If you're looking to fix your lens but you want to save money from bringing it to a professional repair, you can actually repair it by yourself. You only need a correct tools and patience. Good luck!
The good thing about this is that the replacement flex cable or gears are so cheap.

If you've set the correct camera settings and the autofocus isn't working, there should only be two reasons why.
When i set the switch to manual and I manually adjust the rotating manual ring, the focus works, but when I set the swich to AF and i half-press the shutter button, nothing happens.
Early indication is, because the manual focus works, then the gear should be in good working condition. Because if the gears are bad, the manual ring should be stock or the manual focus won't work at all. But since it does, it should not be because of the gear.
The two reasons why your lens isn't autofocusing:
It is because of the broken gear
or
It is because of the broken autofocus flex cable

What upsets me is that this is SO COMMON in this lens, what the heck was Canon thinking? Is this "planned obsolescence"? I've used my camera very little, 7,000 shots between three lenses and this one, you can tell how the auto-focus ribbon bends and gets straight, then bends and gets straight EVERY TIME one moves the zoom. I am not an industrial engineer but can tell this was NOT GOING TO LAST. Canon should recall this lens model and give us one without this brutal design flaw.

The most delicate description is missing when you reassembly the zoom lento. Tricky job, I have been lucky.
Very useful instructions thank you. There’s no need to remove the zoom rubber if your very careful. I followed the first 6 minutes of the video and then just removed and replaced the ribbon. Works like new now.

Hey have autofocus issue with my 55 250mm non stm lens,
*the problem is autofocus works only when the object is already near focus distance .
* when focusing from long to short autofocus tries but doesn't get in focus

Your explanation is very good, but I couldn't hear it all the way to the end because the background music really bothered me, it's just unnecessary. And if you must put on background music, then lower its volume by 80 percent of its original volume.
excellent video, but unfortunately I'm currenlty facing an opposite problem..
my EF-s 10-18mm doesnt manually focus anymore. even in full manual mode, the focus ring is spinning endlessly with no effect.
auto-focus works fine, the focusing motors don't seem to be damaged.
I tested the lens on 2 cameras. lens behaved the same on both cams.
Have you experienced something like that before?

Yes lf course. But it you’re not confident to do it yourself, just let them do it for you.
Great video - thank you. Wasn’t a fan of the background music or title sequence, and greater depth of field or focusing would help in places,but otherwise very helpful. I will watch with the sound off and scrub back/forward while attempting this repair.

Whats wrong if the lens only autofocus in one direction? I changed the flex cable but nothing changed, still only focus in one direction only.
the same problem of mine.
I replaced the cable, checked the gears of autofocus module, but nothing is changed.
seems that the electric motor works only in one direction. If I start manually focusing far object, it is able to automatic focus something near. But not viceversa.
In my case I know that lens had a shock, but I don't know what else to check...

Thanks for the detailed video !! Just one question: in my case the focus only works in one direction. Once the limit is reached, it does not go back. I guess it will take some shock. What could be the damage?
If it's the same fault as mine (that has the same symptoms) then the flex cable that connects the focus position encoder has snapped due to fatigue. Apparently it's a common problem with this lens!

I have the exact same issue on the exact same lens too... only focusing counter-clockwise, but once it goes passed a certain point, it won't autofocus back clockwise. Was hoping this video would help but looks like a different issue...

For people seeing it- I had disassembled and assembled my own and ngl every lens is different mine dont have few ribbons so if you are doing it just do it with clean mind and with ease seeing each and every bit what of yours have few extra ribbons at weird places

I see this mistake in many online tutorials, and it's because those lecturers leave the music volume at 100 percent instead of lowering it to 20 percent of the speech volume.

Hey Rodney, I do have a 55-250mm and when I use the auto-focus it does not take shots, the camera try to focus and never shot, also, it is displaying the Err 01 communication bla bla, the connectors are clean, my guess is that it is the flex cable, what do you think?

So when I take continuous photo my camera will shut off and the screen doesn’t work or the buttons and then I open the battery pack it beeps but then it’s fine when i put it back on and turn it on again but I lose any photo I took

Looks like something is shorted inside. Did you dissassembled it prior or did it get get or moisture inside? Have you tried changing the SD card and battery?

I’m having trouble getting the screws back in on the side of the lens- it won’t turn all the way to 55 anymore so I can’t access the screw holes; any help pretty please?
You have to replace the screw with smaller one or you didn’t put it together correctly

It’s more common on kit lenses. I have a nikon d5300 with kitlens, the AF of that lens stopped working as well after few months.

my camera focus was stuck backward. every times i using autofocus the lens was always can move backward but can't forward, so the focus cannot work normally, could someone tell me how its happen? if i go close and heard the lens its like a stuck dinamo sounds.
If that’s the case, maybe the issue is the focus gears.. if you try manual focus, do you encounter any issue?
@@RodneyEvangelio no, everythings work properly, even if i try to force moving it forward when AF is on it can move and i can heard the gears moving.
i was thingking if that are software issues, i trying to finds any help, reset settings, updating software, etc. but nothing happens.
@@ardhans I don’t believe it’s a software issue. Try manual focus and navigate from there, check and feel if there is any issue when you rotate the manual ring..

Hmm i have 2 broken flex cables...? Idk how this even happens...
I think it’s too fragile that it breaks due to contant use. I had no idea how mine got broken as well.

@@nixietubes So the other one is the aperture? There are two cables there, one is for the focus and the longer one is for the aperture.
@@RodneyEvangelio My other one that is damaged was probably done by me on accident when disassembling and I didnt notice. Its the cable to the electrical switch to tell the camera mf/af. Which is soldered onto the button, motor, and rotary encoder.

buen vídeo, compre 10 flex por aliexpress a un precio económico, instale uno pero funciono muy mal, abrí el lente y me di cuenta q lo habi roto en una sección, probé con un segundo flex y también funcionaba mal. Me quedan 8 flex de los 10 que compre, creo que todos valen bien berga...alguien sabe donde puedo conseguir un flex original? Al menos ya se como desarmar y armar el lente sin problemas jajja
