    I really appreciate his thoroughness. Also I like his effervescent character. It’s not overbearing or hyper. He’s smart, he explains everything you need to know, and gives great advice and tips, and he’s friendly. It’s no wonder he’s got 4 million car lovers watching his videos daily, myself included

      Jay Beasley agreed. Even the thought and follow through process. I mean at the end of the video he shows a before shot and you can tell he specifically shot it and then shows the after shot. Other (most people) take a before frame and just shoot an after video and show it side by side. This 12:11 minute video took probably 3 hours to make and the process probably only takes 1 hour with drying time. Not to mention the editing afterwards. Attention to detail is 10/10. Out to chip and fix all the window now. 😂👍👌

      I just watched the manufacturer's RUclips instructional video, and they should be ashamed. There were SO many great tips in Chris's video that they didn't show. Their repair was even visible after they fixed it! Lol Chris is awesome!!!

    Chris, I was a windscreen technician for about 3 years for Autoglass in the UK. That chip came out better than some of the guys doing it for about 10 years. Also that kit you used had pretty much everything you need minus the UV bulb and glass polish. We used to have a vaccume pump and a specilised unit that you could load your repair resin in. I love your videos, keep up the good work!

    • @rsturba
      @rsturba 7 лет назад +1

      immi111190 I was a tech for 4 years I was a bit sceptical but this video isn't too bad. Important note to remember is that you can't always see the full extent of the damage even after" flexing it" to open it up for the resin to flow. If your insurance doesn't cover it this isn't a bad method

      I know these kits exists, and I know they can be used for good results. But I guess to elaborate on what impressed me, is Chris's method of nicely explaining how it works and how to properly use the kit to it's full potential. Also how cheap it costs, when comparing to getting it done at a glass-shop, where most people would go to without a hint of research before dumping ~$150 for a repair (without insurance).

    I remember thinking I wouldn't use this back when it came out lol. 5.5 years later and I just fixed my windshield for $10 after going to 2 of my past shops and finding them closed down. Thanks Chris! A couple of pro tips for any readers: The manual says to keep the syringe in vacuum for 10 mins, do it. Use a plastic razor instead of the metal one provided. The Pilkington glass on my Accord is very soft and the included razor started scratching it while removing the adhesive so I used my plastic one and didn't have any further problems (no ugly screeching sound either).

  • @DoomFinger511
    @DoomFinger511 5 лет назад +41

    Very helpful. 2 things to note (from the instructions:
    - at the step when you pull back on the syringe (to create a vacumm) leave it like that for AT LEAST 10min
    - At the step when you depress the plunger (to push the resin into the crack) leave the plunger depressed for AT LEAST 20 min
    Also if you dont have painters tape to catch any resin that might run down the windshield, you can also use a post it note. Just place the sticky side near the crack and fold up on the paper to make a spot to catch it. If you slowly fill the reservoir with resin so it just reaches the top, you most likely wont have any spilled resin anyway

    Great video, Chris. I had my car inspected (Tx. Registration requirement). Some schmo asked me if I wanted the little chips repaired. I said okay, then he put a dab of super glue (or something of the like) on the chips and charged my insurance $75. It was a waste of money. The "repair" hardened and the resin faked off. Now I have to fix it on my own. Thanks for the video Chris!

    Chris, I love your videos. I restored my headlights and detailed my older car following your instructions and it brought my old car back to life. My wife has a newer car and just got a chip in the window. I came straight here to look for the fix. I feel confident that I could use the resin repair kit, but there is no hole over the damage to her windshield. The exterior of the window is smooth above the damage (smooth on the interior as well). Your laminated glass demonstration helped me understand how this is possible. Is there a DIY fix for that?

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  3 года назад +2

      There has to be a hole somewhere because that’s what starts the crack.

    • @hullinstruments
      @hullinstruments 3 года назад +1

      Sometimes the crack or void will be so small, Only a few nanometers in with. So tiny and thin that not only can you not fill it with your finger nail, or a thumbtack like he shows in the video… But you can’t even feel it with the sharpest point of an X-Acto knife, Or even a fine sewing needle. But using the plunger and vacuum method duck… The resin will find its way down into the void.
      Maybe even heat that area of the windshield very gently and slowly with an air dry or small electric heater… or let it sit in the sun… The resin will get drawn into the void. Maybe wipe it all off really good, If you’re really having a trouble with penetration you could possibly even thin the resin.
      You could also use 99% alcohol and compressed air to degrease the outer perimeter… and it will also help not push any grease, wax, or other oily residue down into the void.

    Great video - thanks!
    Some follow-up Qs:
    * At how many minutes into the 10 minute vacuum stage do you recommend starting to tap/knock the bubbles out?
    * At how many minutes into the 20 minute pressurizing stage do you recommend pushing the plunger in slightly more, to tap/knock the bubbles out? And then, how long to hold the plunger in (until the end of the 20 minutes, or just let it go back to the upper-notch lower pressure until the end of the 20 minutes?)?
    * I let the epoxy cure in the direct sun under the cure strip for 20-30 minutes. When I removed the cure strip, the epoxy underneath was not 100% hard. Still a little bit of viscosity. Is that ok? (Note: Seconds later, when removing the over-slop of epoxy (with my perpendicular razor) from the windshield around where the cure strip was, it seemed as all the epoxy was hard and able to be razored away like a fine dust)
    Thanks!

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  4 года назад +1

      Thanks a lot!
      1. You can give a few minutes before tapping the bubbles out!
      2. Again, give it a few minutes to pressurize before pushing it in more, and do it until there isn't anything left in the chip, and just leave the plunger in it's position once you're done!
      3. You should be fine conisering what happened but giving it a little more time to cure should harden that up if you ever have to do this again!

    • @tedc7533
      @tedc7533 4 года назад +1

      @@chrisfix Thanks for the replies, Chris!
      1. and 2. When you say to "give it a few minutes" do you mean like 3-4 minutes in, or wait til near to the end of the vacuum and pressure stages? How many minutes into each stage would you recommend the bubble tapping?
      2. When you say to leave the plunger it it's position once you're done, do you mean leave it in the upper notch position where the spring clip would hold it, or leave it in the position where you manually pushed it in beyond that upper notch position?
      Thanks!

    Thank you so much! I'm just outside NYC and I was quoted $160 by Safelite which is just crazy because I know they do it for the insurance companies for less than half of that! I had a small chip that started to spread and I had very little hope for this product to actually work but it did. I never saw air bubbles with the vacuum and I blew out the plunger trying to add too much pressure but despite all of that it came out perfect. I applied a touch of heat with a heat gun on low during the vacuum and I knocked on the glass during both the vacuum and pressure phases. The slight heat and the knocking really seemed to get the resin in the crack. Thanks again!

      How did he save you $3000??? If you go to an auto glass shop, they repair chips for $35-$50 per chip. I had it done twice. Yes, it cost 3X more over doing it yourself, but the advantage is that your car is ready in 30 minutes (they have a VERY strong UV light to cure it), and it's done by a pro, so you don't have to worry about messing up. Because once you tried it and failed, there is no way to re-fix the same chip twice.

I know you spend lots of money for your videos but it is all for the best. Whenever you add rigs to your cars ( LED night bar, auxiliary reverse lights), I am completely mind blown on how you manage to have the right tools and the right brain to do the job. Also you are doing extremely well in drifting. ( I watched nearly all your videos after subbing!) Greetings from Australia! Best of luck in the future!

    Hi Chris, I'm a big fan. I've got one personal tip to share with you. After letting the bubbles settle and pulling out the syringe, it's even better to top off the pedestal again all the way to the top with more new resin to ensure that there is minimal air bubble being pushed back in when re-inserting the syringe. If you like this technique and add it to your video, I'd be very honored :)

    Impressed the kit worked that well, I do chip repair all the time as an apprentice and it alot more intensive, involving first drilling the chip with a Dremel and then pulling it into a vacuum and injecting resin, then you heat it from the inside. And of course curing it after with a uv lamp and a protective film
