Best Windshield Repair Kit? Let’s Find Out!

- I hired a professional windshield repair technician and tested 7 Kits: Rain-X, Permatex, JB-Weld, ClearShield, Athlon Tools, Unioon, Antswish. Windshield crack repair kits compared resin quality (strength and scratch resistance), ability to push resin into damaged windshield and overall repair quality. I hired a professional repair technician to make a repair and to then provide analysis of each of the windshield repairs made using each brand.
I bought all of the repair products and supplies used to test the products to ensure an unbiased review. So, thank you for supporting the channel.

Featuring a professional, when it's rather hard to grade products was a very smart move.
Thank you very much!
Yep, this took his review on whole new level, would love to see more product reviews including professionals.
Todd, you outdid yourself this time, and that's a very high bar. A+ job!!

I like the inclusion of a professional in the field, seeing how he does it and his opinion of the DYI kits.
Thank you very much!
It should have been a blind test though, something to consider. The human mind cannot be trusted 😂
@@rolf-smit the good thing is he has no reason to lie or be biased, other than the Clearshield, which was clearly the best anyways and not really part of the actual testing
DYI= Do Yourself It?
@@vahgarimo9864 you are aware that humans are biased all the time, basically without knowing? That is how our brain works 🤷♂️, basic psychology.
I used to work at Safelite as a repair tech from 2005 to 2008 in California. Our kit was very similar to the clearshield and the professional's kit (big suction cup with one end acting as a cantilever to apply pressure to the nozzle). We did all our work under a UV shield bubble to get the best results but the process was pretty much identical. I'm very impressed with the results of some of these kits. I miss that job, it was such a great gig that let me drive all day and go to interesting places while meeting all kinds of awesome people.
Thanks for sharing.
I assume a higher paying job came along or you would have stayed with it.
I used to work for a private windshield company too… I also miss it lol funny how jobs like that are so awesome. Same experience you had basically.
@@MrTruckerfno, he got a job that paid less. On the plus side it's longer hours
What was the ratio you found of cracks vs. chips that were repairable? I carry glass coverage just so I don't get whacked with a $500 bill every few years to replace the windshield.
This is by far the number one consumer product ranking source that I have found. Been watching for a long time and you never cease to amaze me with the quality and objectivity of your reviews. Thank you so much!
Thank you very much! That's definitely my goal. That gratitude expressed by everyone is highly motivating and keeps me going. I'll continue trying to improve the quality of the reviews. Thanks again!
FACT
I completely agree. When I'm looking to buy a tool, I first check if Project Farm has done a video on it. That's what happened when I needed a jump starter. I bought the Audew, and haven't been disappointed. Thanks, Project Farm!!!
@@ProjectFarm can you do a test on safety masks. I think several Amazon Cheapos are misleading on how effective they are.
Agreed!
I know I am not alone in the fact that my tool box and my barn have many things in stock due solely to your videos. I am thankful beyond words for the money and effort you have saved myself and all like me.
Glad to hear! Thanks, my pleasure!
Yep, definitely not alone in that regard.
Things cheap DIY kit makers don't tell you. [1] Any crack lines must be stopped by honing end-points with dental bit. [2] Repair area needs to be undercut, so resin stays trapped in hole. [3] Heat gun (or strong hair dryer) is required for resin to flow deeply into damaged spot. [4] You need to draw air out many times until void is full (inspect from inside). [5] Using a UV light source is the only true way to know resin will harden properly. I'm glad you had someone show correct procedure. Your videos teach people more than what most have acquired in their whole life.
Thanks!
This man has single handedly made me aware of and purchase so many things I wasn't aware I needed!!

It's his superpower 😁

He volunteered? I must have missed that part. I thought he was paid to do that work.
@@mediocreman2I'm assuming he was paid, but it sounds like he volunteered to review the other repairs and to be filmed. I wouldn't be surprised if Todd paid him more, though
I got a ding in my windshield just a couple days before this was posted, bro you a Saint
Thanks for sharing.
I used that $300 kit as a teenager when I was repairing windshields and I got to the point where 1) the biggest chips were my favorite to repair and 2) I could make them completely disappear. Also the best film for curing was the plastic from a cigarette pack!
Thanks for the feedback.
I wonder if the JB-Weld would have performed better using a thinner curing film? (like the wrapper from a pack of cigs)
I liked the transparent liner from the back of automotive tint. It worked great for curing
A person who takes pride in their job. We need a lot more of you in this world.
Also, what kind of waste film would you recommend today? Cigarette packs are way too expensive -amoung other reasons not to buy them.-
Cant you just but a new windshield with that money?
I have used the permatex 6 to 8 times with good results. They never cracked, left a wiper streak or discolored. Some spiders were on the large size and were repaired, though none disappeared completely. You're one of the fastest talking Farmers I've come across. Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Will the permatex push the medium onto cracks/ If fso, how long. I've got nast crack i would like to make less visible
I cannot praise this man enough for the extraordinary amount of effort in producing this kind of content, which is interesting, informative and unbiased (rare quality nowadays).
Thanks!
His effort has paid off, with over 700 million combined views of all his videos. RUclips content creators get paid based on the number of advertising views for ads that run during the videos.
I have used the Permatex kit, and it has held up great over the last few years going from high temps, and a few trips into the snow too. The big thing is making sure the area around the "sealing sticky ring" is 100% clean, or the resin WILL force out when you do the "pressurize" step. Otherwise, for tiny chips, it is not a bad kit.
Great information and great tip!
I used Permatex after taking my wife’s car to get a chip fixed one week for $115, then she got another chip just a few weeks later. It looks just as good as the professional job. Definitely a good product to keep on hand.
I’ve used the permatex on some pretty big stars. Most of the time they hide pretty good, but even if they’re partially visible yet they seem to stop the spread. The challenge I have is getting to it before the spread starts. I run a lot of miles in a state that spreads gravel on snow and ice so I personally buy windshield warranties and they always pay for themselves. The vehicle I bought in January is on windshield number 3
I've also used the Permatex with excellent results.
I used a permatex kit on my windshield more than 10 years ago and it's still looking great. Best kit for the money.
Huge thank you to Josh to come out and being on camera with out, along with sharing his expertise.
So many times this channel has put out a video that is EXACTLY what I need with PERFECT timing. I just did the estimate for Safelite and it is 159.99 for just 1 chip.
So once again, PF is saving the day.
I appreciate this channel as much as I enjoy it.

Thanks so much!
I've heard that insurance companies have covered these repairs with no deductible applied. I'm surprised the shop didn't tell you that.
Depends on the insurance company. State Farm will discount but make you pay. Most insurance companies will cover at 0.00 cost to consumer. But you have to file a glass claim to fix chip and find out.
Simply amazing quality work here. Straight to the point, well thought out testing procedures and objectivity. A lot of reviewers and testers should watch and learn from you. Top tier!
Thank you very much for supporting the channel!
For almost five years, I've been watching your videos every Sunday evening (in my timezone). Thank you!
Wow, thanks!
I agree, its been my must watch Sunday afternoon channel for 3-4 years now!
Thank you, and thanks to Josh for being a good sport. This is an important consumer product to have some knowledge about.
Thanks!
The methodologies used for almost all Project Farm tests are by far and away the most detailed and thorough that I have seen. I'd trust these tests more than just about any others I watch on youtube. Also I appreciate the obvious strong efforts to keep the video edit as short as possible.
Thank you!
Yeah, the opinion and closeup work from Josh increases the already high value of this video review enormously. You can only try and fix the windshield once and you want to get it right. Astonishing work Todd, thanks for that!
Thank you!
I've been doing windshield repair/replacements for about 10 years now. The first repair kit I bought, and still use to this day, is Glass Mechanix. Pricey kits, but I achieve very nice repairs with it. One thing i'm glad you showed is adding a bit of heat (flame or blow dryer) to the inside of the windshield on the last pressure cycle. You can literally watch the resin flow into the legs of the cracks when doing so. It's very satisfying to watch that happen.
With the Glass Mechanix kit (and with other professional high end kits) you only need to do vacuum and pressure cycles for a couple minutes. Very quick and efficient.
Thanks for the feedback.
Really love that you got a professional to verify all the products and show how it's really done. Hope this is something that is included in future videos.
Thanks!
Nothing better than a good field technician... The tricks of the trade. Many thanks guys.
Thank you!!
I got a chip a half inch from the edge of my windshield and it spread out to a 6" crack extending from the chip towards the center. I brought the car to Safelite and all they did was rub on the crack extending it another 2" and then tell me it can't be repaired and I need a new windshield for $600. I drove home, ordered the Rain-X kit on Amazon, and sealed the chip and the crack. Because the chip was next to the edge of the windsheld I used my fingers to hold the other half of the suction cups down for ten minutes while the epoxy did its thing.
It's been over six months and the crack hasn't spread any further. It's visible when the light shines on it a certain way but overall I'm very pleased at saving $585 on the repair.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
@@dj68k eventually you might want to get that fixed. But I do like how this stuff stops the crack from spreading.
If you ever need a new windshield look for a large auto glass distributor near you. Safelite and dealership were charging me $900 for an oem windshield and labor and I got it done for around $245 with an aftermarket windshield after getting quotes all around town. Ridiculous prices for OEM windshields
Another thing to note on newer cars is that features like adaptive cruise control may require calibration after a windshield replacement. This is usually not needed but can be done afterwards if needed. So to save the most money you can ask for quotes for a new windshield, a calibration, and both together. It is cheaper to get them together. But since you most likely won't need a calibration it is a good idea to have the lowest quote for the calibration if you do require it down the road. In my case I have never needed a calibration and all the safety features still work great.
"I brought the car to Safelite and all they did was rub on the crack extending it another 2" and then tell me it can't be repaired and I need a new windshield for $600” 🤣🤣🤣
Another great informative video with no excessive bluster, no annoying music, no worthless delays of time, and just solid content. If you aren't subscribed to this channel, you should be. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
I've been watching your videos for a long time and just want to say that your reviews are an absolute gem for the community. Thanks for your work
Thanks and you are welcome!
I have used the Rain-X kit several times with pretty good results. A heat gun on the inside of the windshield makes all the difference to get the resin into the crack.
Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for the pointer. I'm going to have to try this. How long do you use the heat gun for? Can you see the resin go in the crack?
@@gillt1975 Not long at all. Just enough get the glass behind the crack fairly hot(10-20 seconds?) Yes, sometimes you can see the resin actually go into the cracks when you heat the glass up. Hope this helps.
@@joboy77 That's not the resin, it's the foil between the glass layers. I work at Carglass and it's forbidden to heat the glass, because after a while it will crack again.
Then why did the professional in the video heat the glass with his lighter?@@Toxic.D
Hearing you took extra time to practice usage makes me very happy. I feel like that has been one of the longest running complaints in the comments & I hope you will do so for products you are unfamiliar with in the future. While there are plenty of objective metrics to rate products by, a subjective opinion by someone with experience can be just as valuable & I think some of that can be gained by taking time to familiarize yourself with the tools. These videos are already a fantastic resource for anyone looking to buy a tool & I appreciate your dedication to the channel!
Thanks!
Love to see professionals included and have their input!
Thanks!
I have used the Rain-X kit, and was very happy with the results. Although the repairs are slightly visible if you get them in the right light, they have lasted well, and don't seem to have deteriorated in the 2 years since I did them. 😊
Thanks for sharing.
I have experienced the same results with the Rain-X kit using the same equipment with two vehicles.
I used the Rain-X kit on 2 different car windshields and on a motorhome windshield, all with really good results. I like it so well that I always keep a kit on hand. Really enjoy the ProjectFarm channel and his methods of testing.
Agreed, like the rain x kit.
I didn't even know there were kits to do this at home. It's nice to learn of their existence and how they perform at the same time. I'll be getting a kit today.

Check your auto insurance though -- many policies will pay 100% for a professional to come do it (so you don't leave it and cost them a whole lot more).
@@UnlikelyToRemember ya if you wait too long your glass will look like an upstate map of new york
IMPORTANT TIP FOR FLORIDIANS. If you live in florida and have car insurance. Your insurance is required to fix your cars windshield at no cost to you. No deductible. As long as its just the front windshield
Great tip! Thank you
PA also has similar policies. This can apparently increase your insurance rate if you switch. I quoted out a few options and forgot about the windshield "claim". It came up during the final stages of obtaining the policy and it raises the overall premium 10%
Still was cheaper than staying with my old company but just and fyi.
Additional information - contacting my insurance company after a crack that required full-replacement of my windshield. Statefarm told me that this would not, by itself, raise my premiums for insurance. However, it is considered part of your claims record (although it IS labelled as a windshield claim and therefore specified differently than an accident) and if you are someone with multiple claims, the claim associated with your windshield may be a factor in raising your rates if you end up filing more claims in a short period of time. This seems subjective and varies by insurance company in the state. It may make sense to pay $12-13 in order to DIY a rock chip in order to not initiate this claim through your insurance. especially if you are someone with a history of speeding or recent accidents.
That reminds me of what happened in MN with windshield repair decades ago.
One company decided to give away a free box of steaks with each windshield repair. It was advertised relentlessly, and since insurance paid for the repair, the extra money for the "free" steaks (i.e. a kickback) was a big bonus for people to pick this company. Soon everyone that did windshield repairs had to have some give-away, sometimes exceeding the cost of the repair and costing hundreds of dollars.
Eventually this attracted the attention of the legislature, since of course all this did was increase car insurance premiums. They eventually banned this practice of "free gifts" outright.
@@stevesether smart move. Down here it's lead to a scam industry of windshield replacements that don't need to happen in order to collect premiums. The same happens with roofing and now we've got legislation that stands to increase costs to consumers. Classic example of "the small group of bad actors ruins it for the rest of us".
I had to stop in the middle of this to say THANK YOU FOR GETTING TO THE POINT I love that I didn’t listen to 5 min of rambling and “don’t forget to subscribe” crap that everyone says! I subscribed based off this alone. Thank you for not needing to hear yourself talk and for being SO EFFICIENT with time, explanation and providing great reviews. Wow thank you!

Thank you very much!
I’ve personally used the rain X style kit (ufixit brand) and the permatex as well for a dozen repairs now and had excellent results with both, correct application is definitely the key and while the rain X is more reusable it is a little more fiddly. I felt the double sided tape and syringe type kit was far more foolproof and more “point and shoot”.
Thanks for sharing.
The information is very useful and your dedication to completeness and organization is impressive. It’s hard to appreciate how much work must go into this because you make it look easy!!

Before you commit to a DIY kit. Definitely give your local repair shops a call for a chip repair quote, they could be cheaper than the diy kits, if not free through insurance
@@oTEMPE5To you're absolutely right. My windshield crack although not too deep, was over 6-7 inches long. Using a repair kit wouldn't have done much. A replacement is covered in the insurance and the windshield repair shop does the insurance paperwork! Quite straightforward and more reliable in the long run.
As someone who works at O'Reilly Auto Parts your videos on chemicals and things we sale is helpful. I can confidently recommend products that i otherwise never had the need to use myself. Thank you for continuing to be a reliable and useful source of information.

I've had two chips in my windshield since buying my car over 2 years ago, and I've used both the Rain-X and Permatex to similar results as shown here. I came to the same conclusion, the tool for the Rain-X kit was a bit finicky. If need be I'll be using Permatex again, worked great for me and has held up nicely for 2 years
Thank you for sharing!
I have used the RainX brand several times. Excellent value. Always appreciate your reviews.

I had a tiny chip in my windshield. I went to the professionals and they said there’s nothing they can do because it’s too small and a repair won’t work. I bought a repair kit and did it myself, extremely easy and has been very successful. Can barely see it and now it’s perfectly smooth, no more chip.
So much for the professionals in this case.

Same with me. They told me to kicks rocks. I went out and bought the permatex one and came back to show off my work. That guy had nothing to say after. 😅

I've always liked the band type with a long extension. It seems best in cramped quarters, but comparing that with the cup type and channel locks or a screwdriver shoved through the filter would be very good.

Bought the RainX kit and doing this repair right now on the wife's car. She has 2 chips. First one left just a tiny chip left, and second one is going well so far :D Thanks for this video! I didn't even know stuff like this existed until then. We just put expensive tint on the windshield, then got these two chips one after the other not even a month later. I was not wanting to replace the windshield, and had no idea you could just fix chips all by yourself with cheap fix it kits! Thanks again!!!
Used the rainx kit several times after being fed up with professionals (cost and avliability) in my area. You need to tap the windscreen from the other side to remove air for best results. I've recommended it to others. Works on phone screens too if the cracks small enough.
Thank you for sharing!
Next time try pushing a centerpunch through the resin injector without the screw in it to probe the crack open (like, let the punch get inside the pit) , don't use more than around 1kg of force, It allows flow by opening the runs/shell and allows excess air to escape. If it's a star chip without any shelling you need to crack it open more with the centerpunch and something to lightly tap the back with. I'm a certified tech, hope this helps for your next repair.
Several years ago I used the Permatex kit. It did a great job. You could not see any damage on the windshield even years later.
Thanks for sharing.
I have 3 large cracks generated from middle bottom of screen up to 1/3 Rd of windshield screen. Can permatex fill and repair them completely?
I love that you got a professional tech to evaluate the results, huge thanks to him for being willing to do that and to demonstrate his trade on camera.

Huge thank you. The day before this video was posted my wife's car got a monster rock chip. We took it to a glass shop that told us the chip was too big to fix, and that we'd need to pay $450 for a new windshield. And another $250 to have the fancy electronic gizmos recalibrated.
I'd just watched this video, so I figured I'd just try repairing it myself to see if I could save $700. Bought the Permatex kit and spent about an hour carefully working through the repair. The chip is 90% gone now. We're just going to leave it like that and unless it spreads later on, I consider that a $700 savings. Seriously. Thank you!
You are welcome! Glad you did the repair!
I used to work for my dad who owns an auto glass shop and I’ve used the “pro” grade rock chip fixer and it does work well and showing the cheaper options widens my spectrum. If you ever plan on doing other glass related videos you should do windshield urethane glue I’d be interested in that one.

Back in 87 i worked at Budget car rental as a mechanic. I did probably 3 to 4 windshield chip repairs a week. I do not remember the kit name but it was designed alot like the professional kit in a case with a 120v UV light.
The manager would order all the consumables by the box load. I probably had a 90% success rate up to a dime size. Sometimes the spidering was just to big and you couldn't get the resin to flow into all of the cracks.
Thanks for another great video brother. It is very much appreciated.

Thanks for this and a BIG 👍 from “Oz” 🇦🇺 where we unfortunately have lots of rocks flying on most away from the city roads. It’s amazing how many people trash a perfectly good windscreen rather than try to repair damage before it spreads.
P.S.
I ALWAYS carry one of these kits in the car, as it’s important to fix virtually immediately rather than allow time for a crack to spread.

My wife and I live within 20 minutes of 3 rock quarries (Georgetown, Tx., just North of Austin). You can imagine how grateful I am for this video! Thank you!

Thank you! This is exactly the video I was waiting for as I suggested it a few months back. I realized that the Rain-X is a bit tricky because if you screw it too tightly, it will make the crack bigger. It happened to me. The hairline crack went from 1" to about 2" after I overtightened it. Using the filler didn't do much for me, so, now not only did I waste money but also made the crack bigger. Next time I will definitely use the Permatex option. Very helpful video!
Thanks and you are welcome! Thanks for suggestion this video idea!
This is awesome! I've been using the Permatex chip repair kit on all my vehicles for the past few years thanks to Chris Fix's videos. I'm glad to have chosen correctly. I ALWAYS have two boxes on hand just in case.

I love that your tests are always very thorough. I was in a jam once and used a snip of Krazy glue for a chip in my windshield. It seems to of worked, but you can still see the chip. Thanks to your video I can properly fix it without wasting time and money on figuring which repair kit to get

That Rain-X kit saved my butt. I had 3 glass shops refuse to fix my crack. I researched and found it had amazing reviews, tried it out, followed directions to the T, and it's been holding strong for over a year. It was a rock chip that had a crack going out the right of it about 2 inches. I have a tinted windshield and the windshield itself was going to be over $800. I highly recommend it.

It seems every time I need to buy something or repair something Project Farm is always there, never fails. With the best testing I've ever seen. Thank you so very much for all your time doing this for us!

Great video as always, thank you! Before seeing this video, and in an attempt to repair a chip on my wife's 2023 Volvo, I tried the Rain-X kit and ended up now needing to replace the windshield. The chip ended up becoming two large cracks! Very upset about this! I followed the instructions to a T. The resin kept running out of the chamber so I tried screwing in down the chamber a little more, then boom! I am a car guy, and believe you me, I did not over screw down the chamber. I even ended up filing a claim with Rain-X stating their instructions did not warn against potentially causing more harm then good. Of course they denied my claim...
Thanks! Thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear!
I've had good results with the permatex kits. if you use a cheap hand brake bleeder vacuum pump to pull a vacuum on it before adding resin to evaporate off any moisture in the chip, and also after adding the resin, you can get repairs that are unnoticeable .

Getting a professional in for their opinion was an excellent idea. Thank you so much for your reviews! They give me a great degree of confidence that I'm making the purchase that will fit my needs. I also really appreciate that these don't feel biased. A decent number of people will sneer at Chinese made products. You just mention where the product is made and let the results speak for themselves.

Another great review. Here's another one you can do involving the windshield - mirror attachment adhesives. One of my cars currently does not have a rear view mirror as the repair kit I used to hold it in place failed. Now I'm wondering which one to get.
I really love the way you brought an experienced professional to both provide a benchmark of quality/experience and to assess the products. Thanks so much to Josh for helping out on this one!
Thanks!
I've used the Permatex twice with fair results. I noticed that if you follow the instructions exactly the resin wouldn't get into the ends of the spider cracks, but if you added extra pressure to the syringe with your hands for a few minutes it would force the resin all the way in. The first time I used it the results were practically unnoticeable, but the second repair didn't come out quite as well. That second windshield also ended up fully cracking all the way across on a very cold day so it had to be replaced anyway. I'd still buy it again the next time I need it, and this review was very useful in confirming my product selection. Keep up the great content!
Thanks, will do!
I lucked out when repairing the windshield of my classic Citroën SM. It got a pretty good hit that I didn't see of a couple of weeks as it's obscured by the mirror from the driver's seat. I used the Permatex and it worked really well. One item of note is that the Permatex instructions state that you can press on the windshield from inside to flex it a little bit, this helps the resin to penetrate very small cracks that spider out from the chip. When in started the chip was quit noticeable, but now you can't see it unless you get very close, know where to look, and the light is just right. So my real world experience tracks with PF, Permatex is great stuff! I did not even consider having a pro fix it, not sure why except that I'm disinclined to have others work on the car. New windshields for this car are difficult to find, so fingers crossed it keeps the windshield together for years, it's been several months now and no change in the appearance, so these kits do work.

When I was 16, I worked at a local quick lube shop where we changed oil, did power steering flushes, changed air filters, stuff like that. But we also did these rock chip repairs. I got damn good at them and was the best at the shop. I’ve lost my touch at 27 years of age I haven’t done them since I was 18. I’d like to get back into it since now I’m a Toyota Master technician. Thanks for the video!!!
