Back in the 70s, there was one thing that everybody could agree on: Sly Stone was baaad, and that was good. It didn't matter what crowd you hung out with, all you had to do was put on a Sly and the Family Stone record, and any room would transform into an instant party. They were the great uniters, musically and socially.
I'm surprised that the video didn't address the thing that led to the group's demise more than anything else. Sly wouldn't appear for concert dates. During the early 70's, he did have a lot of successful recordings, but he wouldn't show up for his concert appearances, which led to riots at concert halls and arenas. And if he did appear, he would only play briefly and then walk off stage. This was what ruined his musical career, because once his records stopped selling, he was unable to get bookings because he had been blacklisted by concert promoters. A terrible shame because his band was one of the best performing ones ever.
Summer of 1970, Sly and the Family Stone were to play a free concert at Grant Park in Chicago. The band was a no show and all hell broke loose, 2 years after the Democratic convention riots!
Exactly! I attended one of his late 1974 'concerts', and it was pathetic. Most of the musicians on stage didn't even play on the "Small Talk" album! He didn't appear to be wasted, but he came across like a total jerk!
There will never be a band like the family stone again.. they made life enjoyable!! In hard times!! Love that band!! Like a brother said..I played my lps the other day!! Awesome..
Wrong again. The original title of " There's a riot goin' on" was supposed to be "Africa talks to you". However it was renamed "There's a riot goin' on" as an answer to Marvin Gaye's album "What's going on".
Jerry,Gregg, Cynthia and sometimes Rose play in the Family Stone Band. Cynthia’s death was quite a blow, but they’ve continued. Jerry is the only original founding member still with the band, but Sly and Cynthia’s daughter Pnunne (pronounced fun) is with the band and she has an amazing voice. The rest of the band is extremely talented and they sound really good!
When Sly lifted his arms up in the air at the end of Higher at Woodstock he peaked. God knows how a man with that much talent could get so messed up on shit like PCP. Maybe if Jimi lived he would've kicked his ass for being late for a recording session and he would've straightened himself out. So sad....Sly's demise. Living in a dump with an unyet famous G+R punks living down the hall. Wha? That's Sly? So sad. Another great black band with a white drummer. The other? The Chambers Brothers.
In the early years of Sly and the Family Stone, they sang to the people with "Dance To The Music" and "Everyday People". But after that they mainly sang to the black population and they started fading from the main music scene. Just my opinion.
Missing gigs and performing hours later than advertised ; often the shows ended quickly because of local curfews , and drug use had more to do with waning popularity . Just my opinion . ,
Sly was something else. I don't recall this video touching on the fact that Sly passed away a few ears back. All the players in my soundtrack of life are disappearing.
I so totally agree. I grew up on Sly and the Family Stones in the late 1960s and 1970s in North Alabama. The talent of that band was amazing. It still gives me great pleasure to listen to his old albums. Met Michael Jackson when I was little in Muscle Shoals, AL. Met Diana Ross and a number of other Motown recording artists in New York City, where I lived for 40 years. Sadly, I did not get to meet Aretha. Sly and Aretha were and will always be my favorites. God bless you and your talent!

Fantastic, groundbreaking band…play them almost everyday.. Time For Livin, Everybody is a star! Two of my favourite songs of all time..
Sly and the family stone were awesome and an inspiration to many artists wish they would have put out more music
Including a guy named Prince.
Family Affair is my favorite Sly & the Family Stone song.

They are the best psychedelic soul band.
GenX will never know how amazing this band was from 1967-1971
well, they were not old enough to see them live.recordings do exists.
I’m aware of them and deeper cuts TOO!
My Dad played the stone all the time... and I would dance to the music 🎶
Sly was my first live concert. ‘71 Houston, TX
Sly and the family Stone. Taught this white boy to embrace the world. All of Us
His music was and is so beautiful!!! ☮️💟
They were not just another flash in the pan. Good pics in this video.
Thank you for letting me be myself again
That { BEST OF TWO BANDS } this guy mentioned , was 1. THE STONERS , 2. FREDDY AND THE STONE SOULS . I was the bassist in the Stone Souls .

stones stay with us forever. You loved all
Good vid.👍
Never knew they were from Denton.
Y'learn something new every day I guess.✔️
I keep waiting for *Head East* 💥
...any chance?🍻
They ran out of stones.
There was Music 🎵 before Sly 🎵 then there was Music 🎵 after Sly 🎵 and it was Never the Same since 🎵🎼🎶💯 LEGEND 💯👏🏽🎉👍🏾🤩
I miss sly Stone.
I really feel bad for sly he don’t deserve to live in a van Now these days I wonder how he is doing now ❤️❤️
It's sad yes, but he did bring this on himself by being so irresponsible about concert dates.
He's schizophrenic. I don't think he's living in a van out of necessity, persé.
@@mojadah10 I know but still he don’t deserve that even it’s that I feel like he deserves more 💓🙁
Vallejo is North East of San Francisco. North West is in the ocean.
Larry Graham went on to become one of the most innovative and influential bass playing virtuosos to ever play the instrument!
Hey man you never mentioned what happened to Larry Graham, Jerry Martini, and Greg Errico. What's up with that!

Prince spent some time with them in his younger days, joined Graham Central Station, paid Larry back taking him on tours up until his death.
original band the music, the showmanship, my fav are dance to the music, everybody is a star..
Sly the real pioneer of all funky stuff

Greg Herskin. There never was a person by the name of Greg Herskin who was a member of the band. Do mean Greg Errico? He was the drummer of the band.
Thanks for the correction
There were so many drummers that you could make up a name and still be half correct!
They Got Old... And A Few Got Cold! But The Music Is Still Hot!! ✨🎵🎵
You talk about the album There's A Riot Going On without talking about the riot that came after a no show in Chicago's Grant Park? Why
sly never recieved the 5 million....it was overturned on appeal by the record copany...sad
How about what happened to the Chambers Bothers and also Iron Butterfly.
He is doing fine with a 5 million dollars settlement from past royalties he never received in the 70-80's
What about Larry Graham?
They weren’t african Americans, black indigenous Americans are more like it
There music live on forever icon sly the Family Stone thank you
These videos are well written but need a better reader

@@mikehouser2518 I agree
Thanks
Sly was something else.
I don't recall this video touching on the fact
that Sly passed away a few ears back.
All the players in my soundtrack of life are disappearing.
Sly is still alive
Sly still alive, and I heard sonething about he received most of his royalties back after Satan tried to take it all
Sly is still my friend, although his life is in the toilet. He lives in a van somewhere in Cali.
His life is NOT in the toilet. He is doing fine.
There is no great mystery why they disintegrated. Their albums got worse, they missed concerts, or gave poor concerts when they did show up.
Nailed it!
Too sad that he let drugs ruin him!!
I can’t listen to this LOUSY narrator!
Bye. You'll be missed. NOT!
so make your own video and go away!
🤣🤣
One of the greatest 1960' bands, love them.
