Mr. Chan explaining that he doesn't sell rare lens because he likes talking to people about them had me tearing up. They don't make guys like this anymore.
bigheadtaco haha no it seems that way. He knows what they’ll be worth in the future! 😂 he’s a purist too and loves the tools for their charm and heritage! I’d love to visit that shop. Knowing I probably couldn’t buy anything there would make me feel a lot safer haha. Good job man enjoyed these vids. 😊👍🏻
Always like your videos with Mr. Chan. I think he's a must stop by everytime you go back to Hong Kong. Looks like there's always a lot to look at (but "not for sale"), too much to squeeze in a short interview, so he could be a regular on your show.. if you make going back to Hong Kong regular.. which it seems to be. I think Victor at Barton 1972 has a lot of nice camera toys as well.. almost as impressive and diversified and unique, but I'm sure Mr. Chan has a lot more still. Anyways, see and learn something new each time. Thanks for the video, again.
Thanks for watching and yes, I saw Mr.Chan two more times so look out for him in upcoming videos. Victor is just a cool guy, and he actually introduced me to a buddy of his and that video is coming out soon. I have two vids with just Victor as well. Those videos are coming too..... lots of content this time because I was wifeless for this trip.....
Wo~ That Exakta Cam is the one the lead character used to spy on his neighbour in the famous Alfred Hitchock's movie "Rear Window"! The left hand mechanism is so special!
Oh, I totally got it! I just loved the timing and repetition of the question! Great video... thanks for making the pilgrimage (again) and sharing. I've watched the videos of your visit last year probably 50 times. Cheers!
Wealth of knowledge Mr Chan and thanks for sharing the two excellent interviews Taco. I think its time for part3 and secret location and longer duration. Love to see the other goodies :)
Not For Sale! I love this guy, and i totally get why he would not sell certain camera's, its the same for a lot of us i guess, though my attachment to my camera's is a personal one, not because the camera is rare or specialised or just perfect, but i would never part with any of my cameras, never, not without a fight! Mr Chan is such a charmer, a very intelligent and interesting human, very old school, and very welcoming, his love for photography gear is infectious, great interview!
Hey Take, I just found your videos a week ago and love watching these interviews. Before starting digital I actually wanted to start with Film photography to understand and learn the basics. Really happy finding your channel which has a good balance of digital and analog videos. Thanks for the content!
Had a talk with him last week, very nice guy. He showed me a mint original 2.8, and a mint 80th anniversary 2.8 gx to compare, specifically how the original is so much better than the gx, and rollei have declined in quality over the years. Of course, the original 2.8 is not for sale, while the gx is. He's a big fan of cameras made from the 50s to the 80s. And btw, he had suprisingly few film stock to sell, Fuji 100 and 400 (the cheap ones). Rollei rpx 100 and 400. Thats it lol so don't expect to buy film from him.
Is mr chan still open? Thanks. Plan to schedule a trip. I visit him before and O have not bought anything. It will be a privilege to buy something from him. I love senior guys.
This was so great! Nice job man, extremely interesting. Damn Id love to try some of those angenoux lenses for filming and photos much less some cookes. the best
I would love to come to London sometime soon. But it seems like all my projects lead me to Asia instead of Europe. I've tried making some European projects happen, but they all fall through every time. Can't explain it
Awesome awesome blog with a real passionate camera collector, yes SO full of wisdom and one thing that got me hooked on, on each sec of video was the passion Mr Chan talked with, just like Jay Leno, you can relate, click, connect through the soul as they say, and bigheadtaco, keep up the good work, I have been to HK once, really enjoyed it, that time I was hunting for the canon 50mm 0.95 dream lens, glad to say I got one at an estate sale of a camera collector for dirt cheap and like you I really like the minolta XK, I have the european version - XM looking for the cool looking AE-S finder! camera is in very good condition, I love it cause it was like you say, minolta's competitive pro body. beautiful body.
thanks for watching and commenting. Yes Mr.Chan is a pleasure to talk with and look forward to seeing him again soon, considering he's retiring soon. It's gonna be a sad day for photography. But I'm going to focus on the now because he's still working!
you need to go again and again and do more vlogs, man I can listen for hrs and hrs on you guys talk, its great he is going to have the museum have his collection for ALL to see, yes its sad to see the young generation not taking interest in the vintage stuff, I LOVE vintage lenses, I think I will never pick up a modern AF or MF lens to shoot for pleasure, maybe for convince where that shot really needs to be taken quickly
I remember my dad took me to David' shop in the 70s when he was looking for a SLR to replace his Minolta rangefinder. I remember David never stopped talking and we came out from that store without buying anything. My dad wound up buying a Canon AE1 from some other store and I still have that camera in excellent condition.
I wish I could meet Mr. David Chan someday and just talk film cameras the whole day. I want to handle rare old film cameras also. Thank you for sharing this, I feel like I was there with you. "Is this lens/camera for sale?" "No, not for sale" hahaha.. I feel your pain Take!
Shoot Street TV funny, X-Pan's are rare in HK. You'll find more Fuji T-X1 and T-X2s. The X-Pan was just a relabelled Fuji and was sold mostly in N.America and Europe. The Asian market got the Fuji X-T1 and X-T2, which I prefer. Not a fan of Hasselbald's relabelled cameras (the latest Sony ones were a disaster).
Really! Hmm.. maybe I'll find one in Cologne Germany. They've gone up in pricing on ebay now since I was browsing around last year for it. I see what you mean about the Xpan. It is still a Fuji Camera, but I like the look better of the black hasselblad xpan. Thanks for the insights Take.
You have a very “generous” definition of genius. Having been in this business since 1966, this old dude makes me cringe with all his rare but AWFUL lenses.
bigheadtaco i wouldn't mind having people like him here where i live (Finland). Will definitely pay a visit to his store when i'm next time in HK, i think you did a great job channeling his experience and knowledge to us.
It's nice to see the Canon 7s rangefinder, such an overlooked camera, loved it and regret selling it (still not as nice as an M6TTL but much better value) Moving ahead, Kinoptik is just sick...now where is that Noctilux 1.2 :)
Der Mann ist cool: Not for Sale !!! Alles, was lecker ist, ist not for Sale !Grossartig. Ich werde bei ihm reinschauen, wenn ich das nächste mal in HK bin. Das wird in drei Wochen sein
You can almost tie david to a chair, question him anything you want. If he doesnt comply, you can start smashing his "not for sale" lenses with a screwdriver and a hammer 🤣🤣 why am i so evil?! Muahahaha... 😜
I own an exakta too (thought most people have overlooked this old brand)! in fact I had 2 and sold off one because it had sticky shutter and kept the working one that I use from time to time :D
In March I took my son to HKG on a photography trip and we had the chance to visit mr Chan. We spent some time in the shop with him talking about cameras, cars and watches, It was one of the best experiences ever for my 17 year old son and myself. Humble, smart and a wise man, if you ever have a chance to visit the city just stop by and say hi.
Is that an Exacta there? Wow....Oh, Mr. Chan did say it's an Exacta. Cool. I remember my dad told me it was advertised as the "World's first scientific camera"....or something like that.
It's the Exakta Varex IIa from the 1930s. There was a 1958-60s version, but those had the cheaper embossed versus engraved logo. Mr.Chan has the more valuable 1930s version of course.

Before that quality camera gear was for people who didn't need to ask the price.
yes the Japanese cameras (like the cars) were always good bang for buck. But for collecting, the European cars usually get all the attention. Personally I prefer the older Japanese cameras because the majority of them are affordable.
there is lots of Bs here. in exacta thr lens does not have the shutter in lens, it is a pre cocked aperture that has to be separately released. alpa is a swiss camera brand, but the lens shown is a french angenieux brand made for alpa brand...the filter is a color correction filter
Zeiss Ikon Contax and Contarex is some of the very best cameras ever made, when new Zeiss Ikon Contax was not "popular" because they were expensive, so "poor" people bought Leica cameras !
Juan Ramírez García to be honest, I'm asking him to show me his favourite cameras and lenses, so that's the reason why they're not for sale. 99% of his store items are for sale "-)
Sorry, but Alpa was always Swiss, and the new Alpa company, making presently extremely luxurius medium format gear, is also Swiss. Before bankrupcy of the first Alpa company, they sold small format material made by Chinon, but made entirely in metal.
Ha ha, sorry. Being Canadian, we pretty much know how to pronounce French words, but I also knew the Chinese had their own way to say it. I initially pronounced it correctly and nobody knew what I was talking about!!
Since Mr.Chan never talks about his photography, I assume he is just a casual photographer with family and friends. I disagree that because he sells cameras and is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to camera equipment, that he has to be equally a great photographer. the opposite is true. Just because you're a talented photographer doesn't mean you have to understand the history and culture of cameras.
The world needs all sorts of people. Mr.Chan has dedicated his life to building a wonderful collection of vintage cameras, of which most of it is for sale. If he isn't a talented photographer, that doesn't take away from his knowledge of cameras or his appreciation of it.
I respect Mr Chan and his collection but i was just curious of seeing his work as a photographer as well. I know the kind of youtube channel you've created Take, and I enjoy watching your videos. That being said, as a viewer, and subscriber, I would love to see videos of you making photos on the streets and the results. Some advices about settings, tips and techniques would be awesome. In my opinion that would bring more subscribers and viewers to your channel.
Juan Ramírez García shooting how-to's and on the street would be great, but those types of videos are time consuming and complicated. On this trip to Hong Kong, I only shot one video when I'm shooting on the street. The rest are interview style like this, or its me by myself with a tripod. I hope you understand that a channel like Digital Rev has a staff of 7-8 people. It's their full time job, they have funding and make good money from RUclips. I am a single person brand, I have other work, and I do this part time. As much as I would love to do more how-to videos and more live videos of me shooting, those are very complicated videos to shoot. I hope to do more in the future as my RUclips subscribers grow and my monetized channel can financially support me having a full time videographer and editor to help me on the more complicated shoots. I hope you understand :-)
the ladies have never been rude to me, but they do seem a bit brash and hesitant to talk English with me... the younger of the laides often takes pictures of me with Mr.Chan and always gets me to sign her guest book. She's even posed for some pictures for me. Maybe try talking with her next time, she may loosen up :-)
Mr. Chan explaining that he doesn't sell rare lens because he likes talking to people about them had me tearing up. They don't make guys like this anymore.
Yes he is a very interesting man. I'll try and showcase his car collection next time. We just never seem to have time to meet except at his shop
Wow, I enjoyed that. I wish I could chat with Mr. Chan all day and hear him lecture me with mechanical cameras.
I'm still watching this in 2020!
Mr. Chan is a classic cool gentleman! Always enjoy listening to him, so much experience and wisdom.
Yes and he loves talking about cameras, and cars, and pens, and watches, and glasses....
He’s fantastic. Someone who knows their game to this level without being arrogant!! A few could learn from him! 👍🏻❤️
Gareth Danks he’s the man for sure.... doesn’t like selling his gear but fun to talk with....
bigheadtaco haha no it seems that way. He knows what they’ll be worth in the future! 😂 he’s a purist too and loves the tools for their charm and heritage! I’d love to visit that shop. Knowing I probably couldn’t buy anything there would make me feel a lot safer haha. Good job man enjoyed these vids. 😊👍🏻
I can watch this forever
Me too! Good times
Awesome. Please go back and interview him everytime you're in HK :)
will do!
Worth a trip to HK just to visit this gentleman and his establishment
Thank you for this video from Spain. GOD bless you and your family and your country.
cameras never gets old, as long it take picture and tell a story.
He is very happy sharing his knowledge. That's true passion right there.

I can see why Mr.Chan likes it so much
Wonderful!.......I could listen to Mr Chan all day.
Me too!
If I ever make my way to Hong Kong I am damn sure heading to this store. Thanks for the videos.
My friend! Unusual, friendly and very interesting interlocutor! I am very glad to see that he is in good shape :)
BHT: "...but is it for sale?"
Mr. Chan: "Not for sale!"
lol!
Yes, not rehearsed. I ask him to show me his favourites or his best, and obvioulsy they're not for sale!
Oh, I totally got it! I just loved the timing and repetition of the question! Great video... thanks for making the pilgrimage (again) and sharing. I've watched the videos of your visit last year probably 50 times. Cheers!
Jason S. thanks for watching. More vids with Mr.Chan coming up soon. I just have to plow through all my content!
Mr Chan is a wonderful man and what an interesting interview. Thank you.
we had a great time with Mr.Chan, thanks!
This is gold thank you both so much for the interview, must him visit one day!!!
It was our honour and pleasure to see Mr Chan again!
Love this one!! Mr, Chan reminds me of my grandpa!
Wealth of knowledge Mr Chan and thanks for sharing the two excellent interviews Taco. I think its time for part3 and secret location and longer duration. Love to see the other goodies :)
I've shot 3 more interviews with him..... top secret :-)
Looking forward seeing them :)
This was unreal. Thank you so much.
thanks!
Not For Sale! Mr Chan is such a charmer, a very intelligent and interesting human, very old school, and very welcoming, his love for photography gear is infectious, great interview!
Amazing collection and wealth of information. Really enjoyed this. : )
Just awesome! This guy's knowledge deserves to be documented.
Lots of guys like Mr.Chan in Hong Kong. Just not all of them speak English well
Mr. Chan is the best. I love the episodes with him! =)
I am glad you finally put out this video. It is exciting to know about some of the great optics from the past.
More videos with more amazing lenses and cameras and personalities coming up
Thank you brother for these interviews with mr. Chang, they're history relics!you did a tremendous job!
I've got more unreleased videos.....
@@bigheadtaco that's a good news,I just subscribed to your channel.
Hey Take,
I just found your videos a week ago and love watching these interviews. Before starting digital I actually wanted to start with Film photography to understand and learn the basics. Really happy finding your channel which has a good balance of digital and analog videos.
Thanks for the content!
Would love to see Mr Chan discuss and show his medium format film cameras. Next time?
There's so much to talk about but yes, medium format. I have a short little video that's part of my vlog series again with him.

Mr Chan is an amazing figure in the camera world, always willing to share his time and knowledge
Mr. chan u r the best the GODFATHER of vintage camera and lens world all photographers should learn from him.
yes, special announcement video coming soon....
Awesome video! So much passion ...
Is mr chan still open? Thanks. Plan to schedule a trip. I visit him before and O have not bought anything. It will be a privilege to buy something from him. I love senior guys.
This dude is so cool! Fantastic intro on this video - great job!
This was so great! Nice job man, extremely interesting. Damn Id love to try some of those angenoux lenses for filming and photos much less some cookes. the best
Mr. Chang I want to buy your portrait lens with the exacta body. It is absolutely beautiful.
Very great intro...love the music ! Another fantastic video! Please let me know if you are coming to London ;)
I would love to come to London sometime soon. But it seems like all my projects lead me to Asia instead of Europe. I've tried making some European projects happen, but they all fall through every time. Can't explain it

Mr Chann in the man, great vid and info.

great story, thanks for sharing!!
Really like the intro! What was used? And great video with Mr. Chan! He's always awesome.
my videographer Ryan from Arcade Original used the Panasonic GH4 to shoot the intro sequence
What a great guy Mr Chan is!
Even if he would sell it to me, I don't think I could afford the stuff that he loves and treasures. I'll be happy buying a Rollei 35 from him!
I'll take a rollei 35 too or maybe an Hasselblad Xpan.
Shoot Street TV funny, X-Pan's are rare in HK. You'll find more Fuji T-X1 and T-X2s. The X-Pan was just a relabelled Fuji and was sold mostly in N.America and Europe. Shoot Street TV the Fuji T-X2 is all black, at least all the ones I've seen in HK.
mr chan is a photographic genius
You have a very “generous” definition of genius. Having been in this business since 1966, this old dude makes me cringe with all his rare but AWFUL lenses.
I'm genuinely surprised by this Contarex. What a marvel!
Yes, there's so much stuff out there that we're not aware of. We need guys like Mr.Chan in North America.
bigheadtaco
i wouldn't mind having people like him here where i live (Finland). Will definitely pay a visit to his store when i'm next time in HK, i think you did a great job channeling his experience and knowledge to us.
It's nice to see the Canon 7s rangefinder, such an overlooked camera, loved it and regret selling it (still not as nice as an M6TTL but much better value)
Moving ahead, Kinoptik is just sick...now where is that Noctilux 1.2 :)
The Canon 7s was really nice....
Cool Interview and i think ive to visit the Store from Mr. Chan one day to buy me a M3 DS in fine conditions...if its for sale xD.
hopefully he'll sell you one!!
big head: is this a cine lens ?? No No, special for film, ha ha, thanks for getting this stuff on tape for us
more camera talks from this gentalman please
brilliant, well done Take
Der Mann ist cool: Not for Sale !!! Alles, was lecker ist, ist not for Sale !Grossartig. Ich werde bei ihm reinschauen, wenn ich das nächste mal in HK bin. Das wird in drei Wochen sein
How I wish I'm in hk now
You can almost tie david to a chair, question him anything you want. If he doesnt comply, you can start smashing his "not for sale" lenses with a screwdriver and a hammer 🤣🤣 why am i so evil?! Muahahaha... 😜
so cool!
Sorry, but Apochromat is not a brand. Kinoptik is the brand. They made lenses for Alpa
I own an exakta too (thought most people have overlooked this old brand)! in fact I had 2 and sold off one because it had sticky shutter and kept the working one that I use from time to time :D

yes although you have to be buzzed in, as long as Mr.Chan is in, he's more than willing to talk with anyone. thanks for sharing your story
Sorry, but Switar is not the brand. Kern, in Aarau, a Swiss factory, made lenses for Alpa and Bolex.
Is it for sale? ;-)
bigheadtaco Thanks for the feedback. I have two of these - one with pentaprism, one with see-through. I need to check mine soon....
I dont understand anything about what there talking about but those are some awsome cameras and lenses😍📷🎥
How does he get these cameras serviced?
Good to see someone whose camera passion doesn't stop at Leicaphilia. Most young photographers wouldn't know a Taylor Hobson or a Reid from a beer glass. Mr Chan is a little tough on old Japanese cameras, in the 1960s Nikon offered 2/3 the quality of the best European gear at 1/3 the price, which is why they snagged the market. Before that quality camera gear was for people who didn't need to ask the price.
yes the Japanese cameras (like the cars) were always good bang for buck. But for collecting, the European cars usually get all the attention. Personally I prefer the older Japanese cameras because the majority of them are affordable.
HK Bucket List: Nr.1 Visit Mr. Chan
there is lots of Bs here. in exacta thr lens does not have the shutter in lens, it is a pre cocked aperture that has to be separately released. alpa is a swiss camera brand, but the lens shown is a french angenieux brand made for alpa brand...the filter is a color correction filter
I miss Hong Kong so much ☕☕
What a lovely grandpa hahahaha
Mr.Chan is great....
You can swap out the magazines on the Hasselblads...
not for sale...
2021!
Mr. Chan changed the shop name "NOT FOR SALE"
beauty
Zeiss Ikon Contax and Contarex is some of the very best cameras ever made, when new Zeiss Ikon Contax was not "popular" because they were expensive, so "poor" people bought Leica cameras !
awesome but "Not for sale" !
ha ha, yes nothing is for sale!
So, what is the goal of owning a camera shop if "nothing" is for sale?! LOL.
Juan Ramírez García to be honest, I'm asking him to show me his favourite cameras and lenses, so that's the reason why they're not for sale. 99% of his store items are for sale "-)

17:15 Why he think Leica M3 is the best? Compare to M6 that has build in meter, the M3 doesn't have
As a swiss, the way they pronounced Angénieux hurt a tiny bit.
Ha ha, sorry. Being Canadian, we pretty much know how to pronounce French words, but I also knew the Chinese had their own way to say it. I initially pronounced it correctly and nobody knew what I was talking about!!
Interesting, thank you for the response!
01:45 Hey Take Leica sent a message they want their camera back
You look like @that1cameraguy
I hope he is still refusing to sell his cameras :)
But, what about the photos he takes? I mean, I also want to see his work as a photographer. Cameras are tools to take/makes photos...
I too was wondering about Mr Chans photographs or is he busy building his wonderful "museum".
Since Mr.Chan never talks about his photography, I assume he is just a casual photographer with family and friends. I disagree that because he sells cameras and is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to camera equipment, that he has to be equally a great photographer. the opposite is true. Mr. Not for sale lol
Angenieux. Yep, somehow French are good with glass since forever.
Mr. Chan is very knowledgeable and some how quite nice, but the ladies working for him are rude and very disrespectful if you're a "guailo".
the ladies have never been rude to me, but they do seem a bit brash and hesitant to talk English with me... the younger of the laides often takes pictures of me with Mr.Chan and always gets me to sign her guest book.
