The scariest bit of The Old Sugarman Place is when Honey says "I have half a mind" and then trails off. She said it earlier as well, creating excellent foreshadowing. And what's also scary to think about is Bojack's grandfather really isn't the villain. He's in total belief he's helping his wife and that's how it was done at the time. It doesn't make it right, but he's a product of the time period he grew up in

Joseph Sugarman reminds me a bit of Calvin Candie from Django Unchained. He’s another thoroughly despicable person, but he was created by the time and culture he lived in. It makes him less of a villain, and more a symptom of a society that is just broken in so many ways.

That feeling of stress by having a messy nonsensical story in paper, while I'm trying to conceive the story I have in mind is perfectly captured by the animation style, messy and bizarre, it's perfect. I'm glad Bojack still wanted to experiment with different animation styles even in its last season.

@@martinaval7726 it's horrifying but so brilliant to introduce that small detail that so completely recontextualizes a huge event that directly affected the audience and not just the characters.
It would be easy to chalk up Sarah Lynn's death to her own self-destruction (which Bojack aided, but he didn't FORCE her to relapse or take the heroin. Her choices were tragic and grounded in the failure of the adults around her, but they were still her choices to make.)
Now however, we know that her death is literally and directly caused by Bojack's inaction. We all assumed he did everything he could to prevent her death, including immediately contacting the authorities. He did not. He waited to cover his own ass and even then, she hadn't died. She died at the hospital. This one revelation serves to fully pin just how despicable and selfish Bojack is to the audience, and further questions if he is redeemable. For a lot of us, this piece of information finally damned him as more than a tortured actor.

For me season 1 episode 8, "The Telescope", would be somewhere on the top 10. This is the episode that first shows off one of the major themes of the show, that you can't undo the mistakes of your past, in such a heartbreaking way. When Herb tells Bojack "I will never forgive you", and seeing Bojack get mad at Herb as if he is obligated to an apology, is what made me realize the show has the potential to be one of the greats, and it lived up to that expectation.

    Mine is:
    1. Time's Arrow: One of my favorite episodes of television ever; you've been four seasons hating a character, and suddenly you understand her. Gives you information about everything, and portraits memory in a really artistic way.
    2. The Best Thing That Ever Happened: My favorite self-contained story, just one location, and a lot of character development, as well as comedy. You get to understand in 24 minutes all of BoJack and PC relationship and dynamics.
    3. Free Churro: It's like entering the mind of BoJack himself, just by hearing him talk. Beautiful.
    4. Escape from L.A.: The episode that really hooked me in to the series, and the hardest hit in the guts about how the series wasn't actually glorifying BoJack, but criticizing him as a destructive force.
    5. Good While It Lasted: This episode was, for lack of better word, a poem, like if writers decided to end, not by narrative, but by poetry. It has a feeling of purgatory for BoJack, where he by interactions is tested between heaven and hell, but of course this is not a purgatory, this is real life, and for each interaction, seems BoJack is about to fall to hell, but he is a better BoJack, more mature, and by the end he proves himself to be a bit better than before, and he is rewarded by watching the stars with his best friend as a farewell.
    6. The View From Halfway Down: Why so low? For me, what I'm invested in BoJack are characters, this was a spectacular, dense, filled of symbols and callbacks to moments episode, but the only new thing we learn about him is at the end, when he acts as a farewell.
    7. Fish Out of Water: First time through the series that BoJack starts doing good things for selfless purposes, showing he has a good nature when he is isolated from his distractions/addictions.
    8. The Old Sugarman Place: Aside from what Jhonny said, for me, this is the episode I use to introduce people to the series. It spoils a a bit of Sarah Lynn's death, but since people don't know her yet, they forget about that detail.
    9. Ruthie: It hurted the first time we discovered Ruthie wasn't real. It hurts even more the second time when we watch it as a coping mechanism of PC.
    10. Surprise!: BoJack is as much tragedy as it is comedy. And simply ignoring the best comedic episode would be to undermine the other side of the series. Blocking is amazing, dynamics are quirky and awesome. And it soots an arrow to Mr. PB future development as a character.

I think this episode is great, funny and deals with, maybe not so serious problem of breaking up. For me its a important topic and I love how they show us that break up is hard but you will be ok. You just have to accept some things and focus on yourself.
    sorry for my english😅

More excited about the underrated list as you've pretty much just listed the "canon" of deep and experimental episodes (with "The Telescope" being the unlucky one to hit outside your top 10).
There are episodes that have some of the series strongest moments that get overlooked because they are "normal" episodes with B and C plots, like It's You, Head in the Clouds, The Face of Depression, Angela (most of 6B really). There are really strong Princess Carolyn and Diane episodes (like Ruthie and Good Damage) that could contend with the top 10 but get overshadowed by Bojack episodes. Episodes like Brand New Couch and A Horse Walks into Rehab as season premieres aren't well positioned to be "greats" since they have a job to do as season premieres, but they do that job and so much more.
"Nice While it Lasted" is going to age very well as one of the best series finales of any show, it's just overshadowed by the episode before it (much like The Wire, or Breaking Bad which climaxes 2 episodes before the finale)

Good Damage is by far my favorite episode. I relate strongly with Diane as someone who experienced a neglectful childhood and clung to the idea that one day I would write something that would make all my damage worthwhile. Her inner monologue is so similar to my own and I love the details - like her internal representation of herself being her teenage self. It’s the moment her trauma stunted her growth. She is forever making decisions to try and protect that young version’s idea of self - the fantasy of her being a successful writer who got out of her abusive family and changed the world with her writing. It’s a fantasy her younger self needed to survive - the same way horsin’ around provided her the fantasy of a supportive family. Her learning to let go of that exception of self over the rest of the series is so healing and it starts in Good Damage.

Hooray! Todd Episode! is a super important episode in the show. Whilst I don't think it's number 1 it would say maybe 6 or 5. It shows the importance of Todd in the characters lives and highlights how little they appreciate him. It shows themes of joy, sadness, confusion and overcoming obstacles. Whilst the episode is nowhere near as dark as episodes like ''View from halfway down', it shows that the show has so many stories to tell. And the idea of Todd not showing up to the final performance to ding the triangle is perfect in showing his character development. Many write Todd off as a silly character but he has so much character development and shows more sadness than most characters in the show. He came far from the screw up on Bojack sofa.

“Well That Went Well” is such a good moment in the show in my opinion. At the point I had watched it, I was pretty much at one of my lowest points in my life, and this episode gave me so much clarity and catharsis. The idea of “life goes on” is so clear in the episode, and it’s reinforced in the next episode when it just shows peoples lives going on without bojack. Also, the ending with Nina Simone singing “stars” made me actually cry the first time I watched it, and I rarely am affected that much by film/television. Still gives me chills every time I watched it

Is it weird that I find it weird that I still haven't seen anyone have "Face of Depression" in their list?
Idk I thought people would have that there cause as much as Bojack doesn't deserve forgiveness for the most part, it's so refreshing to finally see him change and to see all the other characters happy.
Mr PB finally getting his crossover episode, Diane being content with Guy and choosing antidepressants over Good Damage, Princess Carolyn having Ruthie, and Todd not being Bojack's shadow and not having disappointed parents.
It's also really fitting how the episode is called "The Face of Depression", a label that was given to Mr Peanutbutter. For a show about a self absorbed narcissist, it's fitting that the title is simultaneously about him but not about him either.

    I'll go with a top 5 because it's easier
    1. Free churro: The episode is amazing, I thought I will be bored as hell during a 24 minutes monologue but it blew my mind. Such a deep episode about loss, I love it
    2. The view from halfway down: Just an amazing episode with so much tension, the ending made me tear up, it's really beautiful
    3. Good damage: An episode I can relate too, the animation style is very effective in the story telling and there is a very good message: you don't have to fetichize on your own sadness and you can choose to let your shitty past behind and be happy. I think a lot of people needeed to hear that.
    4. Ruthie: I really like PC and it was hard to see her at her lowest but she's such a strong woman! The ending always get me.
    5. Hooray! Todd episode: I never really liked Todd, I hate the "funny and dumb sidekick who's here for comic relief" trope no matter in what show you put it. But I think Todd manage to remain likable and he's always doing so much to help everyone, I'm glad this time he choosed to focus on himself. I was really happy for him at the end because he could finally explore and understand his (lack of) sexuality and it was really nice to have some ace representation. I'm not ace but I think it's always nice to represent some lesser known sexualities because it's always nice to see a character go to the same things as you and it help other people understanding it better

I have to say that my favorite episode of Bojack Horseman is "The View From Halfway Down"
As someone who was just recovering after a suicide attempt, I cannot relate to this episode more. I had a similar fever BoJ where I took a train to a mansion and got to eat dinner with people in my life who had died. Mind you it had less witty banter and instead was just this painful reminder that those people are gone forever and one day I'll join them.
The poem by Secretariat/Butterscotch is also the best suicide prevention PSA I've ever seen. Whenever I get down now I repeat the words "I wish I could have thought about the view from halfway down" or "It's all okay, it would be-" and it brings me back to reality. I think this episode sort of saved me.
I really loved this list however and I 100% agree with you...well 90%...

I think your list is spot on. I do have a couple of episodes I would want to honor as really good, but I'm not great at ordering things in a list. One that I think belongs on a list somewhere is What Time Is It Right Now. That one just got overshadowed by Time's Arrow, which is deservedly your top ten list. What Time Is It Right Now starts with Princess Carolyn being heartfelt for a split second, then immediately jumps into a pitch. For a fleeting moment, something was there, then it it was instantly destroyed as the camera zooms out and the character falls right back into work mode. I don't want to write a whole essay as a comment but beyond doing a great job following up Time's Arrow, it had one of the best lines in the series for me, which was when Diane finally gave up on her relationship with Mr. Peanutbutter by uttering in a broken voice "I'm so tired of squinting." This episode was personally important to me because it shows how a relationship can go oh so wrong even when both sides like the idea of it. It really struck a chord with me watching two people who both have a fairy tale idea of a relationship. One of them tries to make it a reality, and the other one sees in stark detail exactly how false the whole thing rings, and it becomes the death knell for the whole partnership.

There's too many great episodes to just put them into a top 10, but I think you've got a pretty agreeable list. My favourite is probably Time's Arrow for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. I also like some of more lighthearted episodes when I just wanna have a laugh, so Let's Find Out is always a great one to rewatch, along with other PB centric episodes like Mr Peanutbutter's Boos and Surprise!. I'd probably have Ruthie and/or Nice While It Lasted in my top 10, but I agree with yours a lot. It's tough, so I'm won't put myself through the trouble of trying to rank them all.

    10. Escape From L.A.
    9. Ruthie
I loved the spin on this trope of the audience being shown a clip from the future letting us know things will work out in the end. I didn't see the twist coming and her imagining a perfect future for herself on a really awful day is pretty relatable.
    8. Downer Ending
You pretty much summed it up yourself in this video why this episode is so good.
    7. The New Client
I loved seeing Princess Carolyn finally being able to have that life she's always wanted but struggle to manage everything at once. I thought the animation was absolutely incredible in this episode.
    6. Mr. Peanutbutter's Boos
This episode was very creative and funny and created a more nuanced view of his life. I feel like a lot of people think Mr. Peanutbutter's life is perfect because he seems so happy all the time but an episode like this one shows us that he goes through these kinds of struggles too
    5. Nice While It Lasted
I know there are a lot of people who don't even like this episode at all but I think this episode is perfect. It represents everything the show has been about since day 1. You can't just run away from your problems, you have to face the consequences of your actions. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to be a better person because life goes on. And there is really no such thing as an ending or closure because there's always the day after the big dramatic event. I think this episode was the perfect way for the show to end (although I do admit it would have been nice to see a little more of Gina in season 6)
    4.Good Damage
I loved the message of this episode. I loved seeing Diane finally coming to a place in life where she could be comfortable and happy. And it's just an important moral that 1st of all sometimes damage is just damage and we shouldn't encourage people to 'damage' others as a motivational tool. I see so many people use tough love as an excuse to be terrible. And 2nd of all that you don't need to chase happiness and live the exact life you thought you always wanted but rather find happiness in what you currently have.
    3. Stupid Piece of Sh*t
Very relatable episode, funny, I feel like everyone has already said what can be said about this episode at this point lol
    2. That's Too Much Man
    1. The View From Halfway Down
That's Too Much Man and The View From Halfway Down were two of the most heart wrenching episodes. I could watch these episodes again and again and never get bored. I still cry every time I watch That's Too Much Man. I've only watched The View From Halfway Down once so far but that's because season 6 just came out in Jan but I'm sure I'll cry every time I watch it again in the future.
