BoJack's Inner Demons | "Stupid Piece of $!#%" Explained

  • Stupid Piece of **** is a fan favorite episode of BoJack Horseman and for good reason. It’s an episode that brings all of BoJack’s innermost insecurities to the forefront of the story, and the way those insecurities sabotage his own hopes at happiness and healthy relationships. As BoJack adjusts to having his mother live with him, along with his long lost daughter, those insecurities are drudged up, showcased by this incredible more sketch-like, chaotic animation of his inner thoughts. These drudged up insecurities overflow into BoJack’s day to day actions in an unhealthy way, and as BoJack grapples with his own fears and feelings about his own self worth, he harms those closest to him.

    I think the beauty of Bojack's character is exactly that: he reflects the most toxic and harmful traits we all have, so we always want to see him succeed to prove that we can be better too. But even just seeing our own worst selves reflected can be really impactful and maybe even helpful.

      I think a difficult part of Bojack Horseman is that sick people can look at the show and see where they are not as sick as Bojack. This is a double edged sword. It can give hope to a person that is going under for the last time. Or it can cause a person to decide they are good enough, when they can absolutely improve.

    The jealousy of the doll is very valid. Beatrice was nothing but terrible to BoJack, never showing him any love or support. He is seeing his mother, a woman who abused him, treat an inanimate object with respect. If she is capable of loving a doll, why couldn’t she love her own son?

    • @bxnny0374
      @bxnny0374 Год назад +184

      I’ll give an answer even though I know your question is rhetorical: because the beatrice who loved the doll was actually a much younger beatrice, who hadn’t yet been so traumatized that she was incapable of love. In that moment, she is once again the little girl who just loved her doll, and hadn’t yet watched it get burned in the fire, or been told to never love anyone as much as her mother loved her son, or any of the other traumas she faced. Bojack obviously can’t see that and has no way of knowing. But that’s why. Because she was transported back in time to a moment when she actually was capable of loving others.

    • @isaiahvalach6835
      @isaiahvalach6835 6 месяцев назад

      @@bxnny0374 This is actually true, especially in people who suffer from dementia. My grandmother was a very stern, strict, and quiet woman for as long as I knew her she wasn't unloving like Beatrice but never showed affection. When she had a stroke and it began the onset of dementia, she changed, she was very loving, and caring, just showing affection towards people but that wasn't the only change. She was Japanese and grew up in Tokyo, Japan during World War II and had a lot of trauma she had suppressed. She had started to hoard food in the retirement home because that's what she had to do during the war, when there was a History program on about Pearl Harbor she was in shock watching the screen and paid very close attention to what they were saying and she never really cared much for the TV. She was a younger self one that hadn't been traumatized and still wanted to show love.

      It was triggering when I first saw it, because I’ve never seen a more relatable approach to anxiety and depression at the same time. A lot of those same phrases I would notice I would feel about myself constantly without really thinking about why those thoughts didn’t go away.
      My favorite part of this show, is that it helped show me things and find new perspectives on things that I didn’t know how to deal with, or how 1 decision or word can affect so many. Bojack did so much more for me than all the years of therapy made me feel even worse for myself, so here’s 🖕for the mental health industry, for drugging kids into emotionless zombie states of mind, and convincing them that they are broken and the only thing that can fix them is 💊 that make them wanna 🔪 themselves or others. Sorry I know it’s helpful for some, but for me, it always made things worse and the medication would always convince me that there is no hope. I feel better knowing that it’s all me working at it to be better and to keep working towards a better goal for myself. Don’t let anyone tell you that you have to take something just because you have emotions. Try to work through them, otherwise they take over your life.

      It *seems* contradictory, but piling up on yourself at the first sign of trouble rather than decompressing and working through it *is* a form of vanity.
      It's the insistence that the problem in your head is more important than the rest of the world and the people within it.
      And honestly, what's more self-centered than putting yourself in front of everyone and everything in the world?

    Something I think is important is that season 6 Hollyhock actually followed this advice when distancing herself from Bojack and ultimately cutting him off. "If I do shitty things, that's because I'm shitty. And you're allowed to be mad at me, but you need to know that /whatever I do/, it's not your fault." Hollyhock may have thought back to that during the time she was making decisions on how to move forward in her relationship with her brother after learning about one of the shittiest things he's ever done, and especially when she learns about all the shitty things he's done. It's not her fault, it's not her responsibility, and she's allowed to be mad at him for what he's done. She always was allowed to be. It's incredibly unsettling to me how much of the fandom wants Hollyhock to have stayed in a familial relationship with someone who she could barely stomach to see in the end because of how he's behaved his whole life... for HIS benefit. She doesn't owe Bojack anything, especially not hating herself, he made that very clear to her this early on. And I am so glad that he did. It's the healthiest thing he could have instilled in Hollyhock to break the cycle that he and his mom and his grandad were in of children being told they owe something to their family just for being born. She got out, she's hopefully going to break this cycle, and she's going to be okay.

    I really like Bojack as a character. It'd be really easy for the writers to screw up and make it seem like they're endorsing his toxic behaviour, but what makes Bojack different from actual problematic protagonists is that he and the show are both very well aware of how bad he is. The show writers don't pull any punches when exposing the awful things Bojack has done, and Bojack, as shown in this episode, constantly blames himself for the way he is, in a way that people with low self esteem can sympathize with him. Not only that, but he has development. He is clearly capable of change, so it's all the more heartbreaking to see him fall back to his bad habits after growing so much.

But her relationship with Bojack was far too broken for her to even know how to apologize to him. And unfortunately, Bojack perpetuated the cycle with Sarah Lynn.

    I love how Bojack has this…invisible best friend in Mr. Peanutbutter. PB is only his frenemy one sided. He gets angry with him, but he’s one of the few characters who never seems to fall into hatred of him. Like a typical dog, he’s extremely forgiving and even oblivious of some of Bojack’s worst traits. He even pays attention to the good traits that most ignore, including Bojack himself. And it’s sad that Bojack can’t see him as one of his better friends until honestly, close to series end. PB annoys him to no end, but it’s not through malice or attempt to do so. It’s just PB being PB. I’m glad that by the final episode, Bojack seems to recognize PB’s value as one of his good friends who’s always been there, even though it’s been from a distance most of the time.

    Bojack's lie to Hollyhock is actually the most helpful thing he could have told her. One of the reasons that Bojack fails to improve time and time again is because he has learned - mostly because he was told - that the shitty things he does, and the emptiness he feels, and the insecurities that constantly ruin everything he touches are all a part of him. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that Bojack rarely ever tries to subvert because he doesn't believe he is capable of change. By telling Hollyhock that the voice goes away, she knows A) that the voice is not a part of her and she doesn't have to be defined by it, and B) that if it doesn't go away, it means that something is wrong, but not with her as a person. If it persists, she'll think, "This was supposed to go away. Why hasn't it yet?" And both those things would make her more likely to seek help in the future.

He has always felt cathartic as a character because he is flawed in an honest and unpalatable way while still wanting to do right by the people in his life. He helps me see that I don’t have to keep making bad decisions. He helps me stay committed to getting better and that it doesn’t have to be like this. You really worded this perfectly and it’s nice to know that other people with BPD relate to him too. Hope it gets better for you. It’s hard but you’ll get through it.

    This is good explanation, but I need to add, that this is how depression works. Depression is egoistic, it let us think only about ourselves, and only in a bad way. When we think about someone we love, it's still only ours perspective, depression perspective, just to feel worse and worse about ourselves. That's why Bojack don't really care about Hollyhock while thinking about her all the time.

    • @heatherheath3834
      @heatherheath3834 2 года назад +11

      I disagree. Not with how it works, depression and most mental health tends to have effects on ego, but that he doesn't actually care about hollyhock despite thinking about her all the time. I think that whilst he's unable (at that point in the show, and especially at that point for him) to perfectly express through words that he cares about her, his actions (when he's not being eaten up by terribly low self worth) show that he does. He forces himself out of his bad mindset by having courage and biting the bullet to go speak to her, even when the only things he's expecting to hear are horrible. He cares enough about her to listen, and later down the line he visits her, and he's actually being much better and controlling himself more on her (and his students) behalf, before it all comes crashing down again. They're olive branch actions, ways for them to have some sort of relationship that isn't completely defined by his lack of functionality the way that a lot of his other relationships are. Hollyhock is young, and he has a chance to do better by her, so maybe she won't turn out like him, and he tries his best to seize that whilst he can. He's not great at it, but it's an attempt. And when you're that deep in your own head and insecurities, attempting anything is just really difficult, so it means a lot more than any words he could provide.

Its hard to love yourself when all your life others have shown you that you don't deserve love. Doing even simple tasks can be hard and you just feel like you disappoint others. He is his own worse enemy but is not blameless. Its even harder when you are aware what you do is wrong but have a feeling you can't stop. Sometimes you need other but going to them won't help. Jesus, this was a great breakdown. Teared up a bit at the part with Beatrice and BoJack's pattern of "parents being shitty isn't about you, it's about them". I feel like that's something every kid with parents with unresolved mental issues-which is a lot of them-needs to hear. It's one thing to hear it from someone unrelated, but it...would have meant a lot if my parents said that to me.
    It's also great to hear about the self-loathing causing problems. I remember hearing the take that self-loathing isn't any less self-centered than arrogance, and I feel like that's really on display this episode. That makes it more heartwarming when BoJack's able to push past that to try to patch things up some with Hollyhock at the end.

    I'm leaving a comment here because I'm not sure where else I could ever talk about this, but this is the episode that made me realize something was wrong. I won't play a violin for myself, but it was rough growing up, then trying to be a self-sufficient young adult during/post COVID-19 - ironically around the same time I started watching Bojack Horseman. And this was the episode to make me realize hating yourself was not normal. Most people didn't have a constant, cruel, self-loathing monologue in their head telling them they were constantly worthless and stupid and just the worst. Watching these thoughts actively push Bojack away from the few people that cared about him made me pause, both literally and mentally, and realize I needed serious change and help. Since then I've been working on changing myself. Sometimes it's in minor ways, sometimes in bigger ways. And I find more often than not I keep ending up in the same toxic situations. Even if it's not perfect, it's a little easier to look at myself in the mirror, I don't immediately feel like vomiting when most people express affection towards me. That's enough improvement to prove I'm doing something right. If anyone bothers reading this and they're in a similar shitty boat, not sure if they are capable of change or even that you're doomed to be like *this* forever, I will personally tell you. You're not doomed. You're not evil. You're not incapable of change or good things. You are human, so treat yourself humanely.

    This episode actually helped me try to control more of these self-deprecating and loathing habits and thoughts that I have. I often just wake up hating myself and my choices. To a point where my mood is just sour all day and my depression just takes over and I get nothing done.I’ve gotten better but I still slip up every now and again. It’s just part of the process of trying to get better mentally.

    I can relate to this episode because I have the same thoughts of negative thoughts just like Bojack. But while watching this, I wanted to cry. Its a relatable episode for everyone who is dealing with self doubt, but it shows that you can change & become a better person.

    Season 4 is still probably my favorite season because of this episode, Time's Arrow, and Episode 9 with Princess Carolyn's miscarriage.

    Can't wait to see you breakdown Ruthie, possibly one of my favorite BoJack Episodes

    I dunno if this is actually necessary but in regards to the ending...
    I was really looking forward to this breakdown and it came on a day where I really needed it.
    I don't just come watch them because I have an interest in Bojack, I come because your dissections of the characters as people help me make a little more sense out of people in real life, including myself. These are always heartfelt and interesting and I love each breakdown, even outside of this show.
    Again, I'm sure it wasn't needed but just on the off chance.

    this episode is one of the most dangerous ones in regards to relating to Bojack. He is a terrible person... but that inner dialoge he has is something I struggle myself with. Even though I didnt want it i related SO deeply to him in this episode! The thought spirals, always seeing the worst in every situation... Its so relatable

    NGL, I was a little caught of guard when Bojack was referred to as a “Human being” when he’s clearly a horse. (Granted, all the animals in this show are basically just people as well, it just caught me off guard.)

    This episode has a special place in my heart, while I’m not as problematic as bojack, I have a lot of really bad trauma. And my inner monologue is often reminiscent of bojacks, how do I fix it?

    • @snailhero101
      @snailhero101 Год назад

      Though You cant get rid of that inner monologue because self- loathing will be in you life till you die, but if it's as bad or worse then bojacks, you should probably go to a therapist.

      I know it’s sometimes not helpful to bring this up, but do you have a therapist? If not, are you able to connect with one? Therapy is a wonderful tool to have under your belt.

    This is my favorite episode in the series. Bojack actually cares about hollyhock, and wants her to know he cares. But that nagging voice that we all have inside of us just won’t let that love shine through.
