    That is a fancy truck, I used to go on the road with my husband. You had to idle the truck to get heat or air. Sleeping in the truck was the safest I've ever felt. It was always warm and confined and snuggly. He passed away several years ago, I miss him and being on the road.

      Totally agree with you. I’ve never driven a semi but I’ve ridden in a few. It’s absolutely amazing to me that people are so eager to pass you truckers but then get right back in front of you and slow down, not realizing that there are several tons of steel and other things right behind them. When I pass a semi, I pass it fast. Not dangerously fast, but it’s likely they can’t see you in the mirror, and if they can, that’s one more potential idiot they need to look out for. When you pass a semi, do it fast, get in front at a safe distance, and get away from them to give them room. It’s not that hard. Sadly most people don’t get that.

Everything else about trucking mostly sucked, but sleeping in a rig wan't one of them!

    I've been living in a Kenworth T680 for the past 3 years to save up for a house and I love it. basically I get paid to travel. In my unit I have a 27 inch smart TV and pay only $100 US for high-speed wifi at Pilot Flying J truck stops. it comes with a small fridge but I have a large cooler and a large cooler size deep freeze. I also picked up an air fryer/microwave so I can cook raw food. Chicken fingers galore! A Kuerig coffee maker and a toaster provide breakfast each day and since I'm single, the top bunk became a storage area for the coolers and a couple bins of anything else I want to store. I also had my mountain bike up there for a while but now I have a scooter folded up under the bed and several types of footware for weather changes.
    I stay in here 2 to 3 weeks at a time and absolutely love it. Oh, and my passenger seat doubles as a massage chair or recliner for watching movies with hot popcorn.

    Jalopnik : Thank you for this video, and thank you, Volvo for helping to make this video possible. My mother died in June, 2000. For several years before she died, she had said many times that she wanted to go up inside one of those big trucks. She had heard many times just how nice they are.
    I live in Graceville, Florida; and my parents lived just on down the road from me. Well, one day, a couple of months or so before she died, I had a doctor appointment at the V.A. hospital in Montgomery, Alabama; and Mother wanted to ride up there with me. She liked to get out every now and then. Well, on the way back, somewhere between Ozark and Dothan, I mentioned how she had been wanting to go up inside one of those big rigs, just to see how they are. Mother was tired and she said no. But then I told her, Mother, if you don't do it now, you may never get another chance to go up inside one." "Okay," she said.
    So we stopped at the Volvo truck "store" in Dothan. I went inside and told them I had my 82 year old mother with me and she would like to go up and see inside one of their big trucks. She'd been wanting to for years to see inside one of those big rigs. Well, that impressed them, so they gave me a key and told me which one. The one we went inside, wasn't one of their biggest, but it was still nice. I had to pick up my mother to put her inside, she was so crippled with arthritis.
    But once my mother got inside, she was like a little kid in a candy store. She was fascinated. Both my parents are gone, and I got the house. My kitchen has a lot of cabinets. This truck had almost as many cabinets. It had bunk beds. It two big, three drawer chests, a big screen TV. A big microwave. It had closet space. Mother was impressed. Well, when she got ready to leave, she wanted to go inside the building and thank them for letting us have this little tour. That impressed the staff. And less than two months later, Mother fell and hit her head on something, and was brain dead within 50 minutes. She died of a subdural hematoma. But that little experience with the Volvo big rig, was one of the most fascinating experiences in her life.

    This isn't a REAL test. Anybody can sleep inside a bobtail truck while parked in a quiet parking lot in a controlled safe area. I challenge this guy to sleep in this truck while hooked to a refrigerated trailer loaded with 40,000 lbs of packaged frozen chicken that has to be kept at an ambient temperature of 10 to 20 degrees on a warm night in the truck parking lot of an old mom and pop truck stop down by the waterfront in a rough part of town with lot lizards knocking on the side of the cab every hour. Or better yet stranded in traffic on I-80 in Wyoming during a snowstorm with sustained windgusts of 50 mph rocking the truck from side to side for over 8 hours. When this guy has conducted a test like that i'll be more than happy to hear what he has to say about how well he can sleep inside this truck.

      I felt a lot better after I got an electric hot plate and started cooking a basic meal instead of truck stop food. I made rice, throw in slices of fresh bell peppers and onions, toss in some meat and/or eggs and seasoning. I changed it up by using red beans, black beans, corn, wrap it in a tortilla and make it southwestern-y. Add raw avocado or other fruits/veggies and throw in whatever produce you find ripe at local stores.

    Try adjusting your sleep hours from day time to night time driving immediately over to night time into late morning over the course of 1 day to make your first delivery at midnight and the second at 5 am. How much sleep could you get. I got 4 hours of sleep during that run just a couple of days ago. Also I drove minimum 6 hours nonstop before I had to stop and take a 30 minute mandatory break before I could get rolling again. Trip planning, which includes figuring out how long it's going to take for you to get to your pickup and delivery including if you are going to be delayed going through big cities and figuring out the best routes to take getting to and leaving your destinations and places you plan to fuel up and park for your mandatory 10 hour break. But there will be situations where something doesn't go according to plan, example instead of waiting 2 hours to get unloaded, you end up waiting for over 5 hours even though you were an hour early to your delivery appointment and that will really put a damper in your plans now you are out of hours and can't drive legally until your 10 hour break is over, but the place you delivered to does not allow trucks to park overnight and they tell you that you have to leave. What do you do in that scenario? This is just one of the many things about how hard work in trucking really is. You lose out on sleep, you get some customers that treat you like garbage but there are quite alot who are nice to you, unload you fast and will either allow you to park overnight or tell you a very close place you can park like a vacant lot or on the street. Dealing with idiots on the road is just the basic concept of stress we get. Anyway I am going to sleep in this company's Cascadia and as comfortable as the sleeper in these new trucks are the ride sucks. Every bump you hit on the road you are going to feel it. They don't call these freight shakers for nothing.

    I got to spend 2 weeks on the road with my dad before I moved to Europe and it was the best time ever. I learned how hard of a job it is, especially when waiting for the next load, ever increasing fuel prices, traffic jams, and just finding a place to rest. My dad's truck was much bigger than this Volvo. It was a Western Star and had an extended cab with a shower, toilet, kitchen and bunk beds. Pretty much his real home and now I can see why he'd stay away from mom for so long. Just dad, his dog, 12 string guitar and house on 18 wheels. God bless all of you truckers out there. You're the real heartbeat of America.

      I once drove a '72 Kenworth that had an 8v92 transplanted in it. The other two spare tractors were being used, so I got the Kenworth. The best part of it was when the mechanic pulled me aside to explain the gears...
      "This is the main, and this is the brownie."
      I responded with "Don't confuse me. Which one do I shift, and which one is the ranges?"
      He just patted me on the back, and said "You'll do okay."
      I did do fine that day, but if I would have had to accelerate up a hill from a stop, it would've been a long drive up as I would've had to go up in 1+4. I was a bit slow with the main.
      I count myself as privileged as most people my age (50) have never even seen a two stick, let alone get to drive one.
      As for the 8v92, I found it to be a well mannered, and very capable engine. No need to slam my hand in the door to get it to work, like all the stories that I've heard about the 8v71.

    • @DrFruikenstein
      @DrFruikenstein 6 лет назад +14

      Lord Nerotix If you bring the RPM up to 900 to 1000, the fuel burns more completely, and the oil lubes better, so you don't wear out your cylinders.
      That having been said, over time, the idling will take its toll. It's actually harder on the pocket book than it is on the engine. Fuel costs money.

    After 20 years of driving, I can say this with some authority. Living in a truck, even a really nice one, is just living in a nice prison cell. Try spending weeks at a time in that little box never being able to leave it for longer than a meal and a shower. Add to that long weekends sitting in a truck stop waiting for a business to open so you can drop or load and you have the makings of a shit career.

He also hates not seeing my mom for very long either and he wants to do the long haul. We got there early the next morning and he had to unload. He drove back. It was boring after the first couple of times I watched him shift gears. I had a 4 speed in my car and had thought it would be fun to see how shifting was done.

    OK Jalopnik... now for the Reality Check! Very few truck drivers are in a truck this nice. When on the road for weeks at a time, a driver wakes up in his bunk, in a rest area, or on an off-ramp in the middle of now-where. He/She has not had a shower in 2-3 days and is feeling really Nasty! (hint: no shower in the truck). You then have to go down the road, a Truck Stop, buy at least 100 gallons of fuel to get a "free" shower, or pay several dollars to use a shower that hopefully has been cleaned after the last few uses! Oh yea, you usually have to sit around for an hour or two, waiting your turn for the privilege of "getting clean".
    And this is only the tip of the Iceberg Jalopnik... so please, Do Not try to Glorify "Big Rig Sleeping"!

      Also, since the early 70's, my answer to all the govt and 4-wheeler complaints is this: Put all truck drivers on the clock. ALL. No one would ever speed, modify a log book, and would spend all the time necessary making truck weight compliant. Company owners say they'd go broke, they want the driver to take all the risks and it doesn't make up for your losses, the wages they pay.

      1. If you request home time at the last minute and it's on the other side of the country, you can't expect to get there exactly when you wanted. 2. That's just bad planning, you should know if you're going to need to do laundry soon and plan ahead of time to stop at a truck stop with laundry facilities. And the lot lizards? Never even seen one in the last 8 months. You know why? I don't go to shady ass truck stops. I don't see why anyone would choose to stop at such disgusting places.

    This video is laughable. Congrats on plugging Volvo and in turn the lend you the top of the line highest quality sleeper birth in a tractor they could offer. For the most truckers, the birth consists of a bed with a thin mattress and a couple of cabinets you can store your shit in. Unless you work for a higher company, you won't have an APU (generator) to heat/cool/power your bunk, you've gotta leave the truck idling. You won't have a fridge or microwave unless you supply it yourself. And the mattress is usually the cheapest throw away bulk buy the can get for whatever price they negotiate because they're just gonna throw it out when you quit. Portraying 1st class on a flight as the entire airplane passenger experience is all you're doing.

    An APU with heat and A/C are quickly becoming a (not "the") standard.
    But, the other features, such as power to run a microwave and TV in the truck, isn't as common. Also, many companies either limit power inverter size, or prevent a driver from having an inverter installed at all, except for medical reasons. So, watching TV, or playing computer games, is usually something done inside a full featured truck stop, and not in the truck...
    That's more time not getting any sleep.
    The last truck that I owned ('99 Freightliner FLD120 purchased new) didn't have an APU, but had Optimized Idle. That would turn the engine on and off as needed to maintain the interior climate, and battery voltage. I had to add all the other goodies...
    And most of us in the industry considered it a motorhome with a fifth wheel at the time.
    The kids out here now tend to call it junk.
    Personally, I wouldn't care if it were a '79 International Transtar II cab over. If it'll make me money, it's not junk.

    • @spencers4121
      @spencers4121 6 лет назад +1

      Yea all those "standard" features add what 10K+ to the price of a truck, companies aren't spending that for the most part. I think Swift just started adding power inverters to their trucks couple years ago.

    • @DrFruikenstein
      @DrFruikenstein 6 лет назад

      Mine cost $83,000, but I added the Jake a month later. Also, mine had a regular Rockwell 10 speed (I think it was a RMX10165).
      It was enough transmission for the job, although I would have liked a 13 just to keep the revs down a bit. With the 10, it just seemed like a stretch between shifts is all. Mine did have the 12.7L Detroit.
      Now-a-days, $83,000 will barely get you a loaded pickup truck. What a difference 19 years makes.

      Yep. By law, it avoids the mandate.
      However, as far as I know, that tractor was compatible with the ELD. It was basically a bunch of computers with an engine and bed. Even the light switches were just an interface with the cab computer. The computer turned on the lights.

There's not much room for storage. No TV. I bought a microwave for myself. Some nights I'm so tired I don't eat. I have to use a small cooler if I want cold meals or meals to warm up. There's a blue light on at all times in the back by my bed so I have to cover my eyes to sleep. No toilet. We improvise. Lol it is not glamorous but that's why we get paid more. This is just a small, small percentage of what truckers deal with.

      Dave Meyers What kind of shithole truck stops are you parking at Dave? 😁 You gotta go to ones that have security bro, keep the LL's away. TA, Pilot Flying J, Love's are all pretty good. Well, i guess it depends which city/area you're in. I used to drive reefers and i got used to the sound, in fact whenever I ran it on cycle mode, if it was chilly out it would go so long between restarts I thought there was something wrong and I would wake up and go check it. Also I would overnight in the rest areas, no lot lizards there. I know sometimes you don't have a choice. What pissed me off though is those losers hanging out at the truck stops that act like they're helping you back into a spot then want you to tip them after. I'd tell them to Fk off and go get a real job. And then the ones that come up to you when you're fueling up trying to con you outta money with a hard luck story. (see above response) My favs are the ones that ask, "where you headin?" I usually tell them, your momma's house. Lol! They usually get pissed at that, almost had to introduce one asshole to my Louisville slugger one day because of that. 😁 I'm rambling so i'm out, stay safe out there.

    • @sweeptheleg.
      @sweeptheleg. 6 лет назад +20

      DJ RealDyl It's a slang term for prostitutes who frequent truck stops. Most truckers come in off the road usually in the evenings/ late night and these hookers come up to you or bang on your door trying to sell their "goods". Problem is some of them are meth/crackheads. The old ones are fat, the younger ones are skinny but damn near all of them are ugly as fuck and they want us to PAY THEM??? Lol! They should pay be paying us! Seriously though I never have and never will patronize any of them. First, because i've never had to pay for it. (does paying for dinner and a movie count?) 😂 Second, because i'm scared of catching some flesh eating bacteria that will rot my dick off from these nasty bitches. And thirdly because most of them are thieves who will either wait til you're asleep and steal your wallet, jewelry and anything else they can carry that isn't bolted down or they'll have an accomplice who's waiting to Jack you as soon as you open your door. Some of these truck stops are pretty dark out in the parking area so it's easy for them to hide. Also the bum security guard is probably inside flirting with the cashier so probably won't see or hear shit either. 😁 Met a trucker out in San Antonio,TX once who told me a lot lizard he spent the night with took off with his wallet after he fell asleep. Lost all his cash, credit cards, stranded hundreds of miles away from home but most importantly, his driver license so he wasn't able to continue his trip to make his delivery. When he called his company to report it they fired him right over the phone and they had to send another driver to pick up the truck, costing them thousands. Ain't no piece of ass worth all that headache bro. Sometimes I feel badly for them though cause that's gotta be a sucky way (no pun intended) to earn money i think, and as women they think so little of themselves to have to resort to that. Don't any of you women come at me with your women power bullshit either cause aint nothing honorable in sucking strangers cocks for cash. The moral of the story is, just SAY NO to lot lizards. 😁 Hope my answers were satisfactory DJ...peace.

      =_= Do you even know what WiFi is? WiFi is wireless connection via modem/router which are usually hooked up to a physical internet connection.
      A moving vehicle cannot have WiFi except through a cellular network, so it would be redundant since mobile phones are common place. Plus, if you think you can drive while surfing the web or watch a movie, you shouldn't be handling a small vehicle much less a big rig. You drive up to 11 hours and work up to 14 hours a day, and you get 10 hours of down time if solo and 8 of those should ideally be sleeping since you got to do it again the next day. If just using it while you are waiting to be loaded/unloaded or for your 34 hour reset, a standard unlimited plan is enough, and unless you are a rookie you are more than capable of affording the best plan any network has to offer in trucking.
      I don't mess with my phones, I at most listen to music or podcasts sometimes because anymore than that I put all the people around me in danger. Downtime is sleep time, you can maybe get on the internet for an hour or two for entertainment, but if you don't sleep enough, people may die the next time you drive.
