Jalopnik my dad owns a 1995 custom built peterbuilt 357 , that sleeper is just a factory sleeper and looks quite shitty and low quality compared to my dads 🤫 you think that’s nice ? We laugh at those driving down the road lol
Jalopnik you should try a freightliner cascadia that's what I own there very nice
Jalopnik cool video but I don't like you
Jalopnik know I want it thanks a lot no your fine I want to be a trucker
Jalopnik I'm surprised you can get a forehead so big in there
That is a fancy truck, I used to go on the road with my husband. You had to idle the truck to get heat or air. Sleeping in the truck was the safest I've ever felt. It was always warm and confined and snuggly. He passed away several years ago, I miss him and being on the road.
So sorry to hear about your husband passing away. It sounds like you had some great times together:)
Sorry for your lose.. may the lord bless you... those memories are what make life experiences so worth it.
May his memory continue to be a blessing.
Thank you for sharing the short story with us .

Honestly, the best sleep you’ll ever have in a truck is when it’s pissing rain outside. It’s cozy af
just reading your comment make me wanna try it lol
My dad is a trucker and I can confirm that lol but talking about piss watch where you step or you'll be stepping in a yellow river or yellow snow🤣
I felt the same way when sleeping in a camping trailer and the heater running while hunkered down in my blankets. Best sleep of my life.
I love when it rains and it's a bit windy...just nature rocking you to sleep...until you hear the sound of a freight train and it's a tornado coming 😆

When he said “full trucking experience,” I was expecting him to drive like 9-10 hours then sleep.
FromHyrule You forgot the 9 hours of sitting at a walmart dc, unless you're counting that as his 10.
If that was your truck would you let that dude drive it? ⛽️
@Trey N It's called a Commercial Drivers License and it's actually based more upon the GVW than anything. There's all sorts of licenses and classes not to mention endorsements.
Then walk across a piss smelling parking lot to take a shower and dump. Then the experience will be complete.
I've driven longer than that, and I'm not a trucker.
You unlock this truck when you become a level 85 trucker.

Are there level 85 hookers too or is it just crack whores for everyone?

Damn I'm level 10..

I've been trucking for five years and I think I became institutionalized. The truck is home. It is the only place I can get really good, solid, restful sleep. Not even my own bed at home compares. Nothing comes close to the quality of sleep I get in the truck.
I'd be willing to bet that bouncing on an air ride seat all day also contributes to your body's ability to take a very deep sleep.

I completely agree with you
Add a refer (not joint) to it. Now your talking. Sleep like a baby..

Retired from OTR trucking 8 years ago. I miss sleeping in the truck. I don't miss having to save 3000+ lives a day because people think a truck will stop as fast as a car.
I feel you , been driving truck only 4 months . I already have countless close calls 90 % of them in new york metro area .
People always race up to pass a truck than pull in front too close. Risking their lives and others if the truck stops fast
Wow I think a lot of them trying to get paid from a accident
I was actually telling a friend how this cars jump in front of a truck thinking the truck can stop on a snap of finger....its really crazy out here bro!
Totally agree with you. I’ve never driven a semi but I’ve ridden in a few. It’s absolutely amazing to me that people are so eager to pass you truckers but then get right back in front of you and slow down, not realizing that there are several tons of steel and other things right behind them. When I pass a semi, I pass it fast. Not dangerously fast, but it’s likely they can’t see you in the mirror, and if they can, that’s one more potential idiot they need to look out for. When you pass a semi, do it fast, get in front at a safe distance, and get away from them to give them room. It’s not that hard. Sadly most people don’t get that.

So I'm 30 now but some of my best childhood memories are going out on the road in the summer with my dad who's only ever been a trucker.
Of those memories one that stands out is falling asleep in the bunk while going down the interstate. Most comfortable sleep I think I ever had.
I've been going OTR with my dad since I was 6 years old. I never sleep as well in my bed as I do in his truck. The best is when I napped in the back when he was driving. The sound of the road and the truck vibrations was the best lullaby.
Hahahahahahaha "I want the full trucking experience" proceeds to sleep one night on a sleeper.

This is a typical truck that a lot of fleets have. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Jordan Stowe Volvo VNLs are everywhere. Most of them are sleeper cabs too. I wonder if they have nicer features in this one. I know this is the newest one, so that makes a difference.

When you’re sleeping in a volvo it’s top of the line so it’s gonna be comfortable, go sleep in an old freight liner that has to run all night and every few minutes it shakes.

Try adjusting your sleep hours from day time to night time driving immediately over to night time into late morning over the course of 1 day to make your first delivery at midnight and the second at 5 am. How much sleep could you get. I got 4 hours of sleep during that run just a couple of days ago. Also I drove minimum 6 hours nonstop before I had to stop and take a 30 minute mandatory break before I could get rolling again. Trip planning, which includes figuring out how long it's going to take for you to get to your pickup and delivery including if you are going to be delayed going through big cities and figuring out the best routes to take getting to and leaving your destinations and places you plan to fuel up and park for your mandatory 10 hour break. But there will be situations where something doesn't go according to plan, example instead of waiting 2 hours to get unloaded, you end up waiting for over 5 hours even though you were an hour early to your delivery appointment and that will really put a damper in your plans now you are out of hours and can't drive legally until your 10 hour break is over, but the place you delivered to does not allow trucks to park overnight and they tell you that you have to leave. What do you do in that scenario? This is just one of the many things about how hard work in trucking really is. You lose out on sleep, you get some customers that treat you like garbage but there are quite alot who are nice to you, unload you fast and will either allow you to park overnight or tell you a very close place you can park like a vacant lot or on the street. Dealing with idiots on the road is just the basic concept of stress we get. Anyway I am going to sleep in this company's Cascadia and as comfortable as the sleeper in these new trucks are the ride sucks. Every bump you hit on the road you are going to feel it. They don't call these freight shakers for nothing.

Omg that scared the $hit out of be every time. But those were the good old days. Nice video proving it’s not bad once you get a good quiet spot.

I love Volvo trucks; it takes me back looking at this new model!
My uncle was FH-12 trucker and that truck really had an impact on our life
Sleeping in the truck while the truck is not moving is a great experience. Trying to sleep while the truck is moving, bouncing like crazy is another story. Team driving is very very difficult for sleeping!
It does depend on your co-driver's driving techniques and what state or highway you're driving on.
You call that small???? Its a damn hotel compared to us EU truckers
Mark Yao then again if i would drive that with my normal size trailer i think i can scrap half of my customers off the list. The roads here are alot smaller
Check out an old Top Gear episode featuring 'Rig Stig'. Then you'll understand why the sleepers need to be bigger.
On the whole I have never been attracted to *eating* the road. I'd eat a tofu and nut cutlet first!
However I've *driven* that distance in a single multi drop trip - and more - without even leaving the UK
As for sleeping in the cab. I've spent many a comfortable night in a non sleeper cab.
@Le Cran yeah but it can't be driven in EU due to regulations, no matter if the brand is european
@starcitzen. You do realize there is long distance trucking in the EU as well. I just finished a trip from Finland to Sweden to north Norway back to Finland. It was longer 1500 miles... And thats a normal trip for the company I work for. But there is no way in hell you'd be able to take one of those trucks all the way up there on the shitty, tight and small roads.
Haven't trucked in 13 years. But I did sleep like a baby in my rigs. Loved the gentle vibration of the engine running, relaxing every muscle in my body. Didn't have all the nice stuff you showed (TV, video games, fridge, etc.) but that just made me appreciate home time even more. Everything else about trucking mostly sucked, but sleeping in a rig wan't one of them!

Been living in trucks for years now and I guess some day I will give up the keys and retire but until then I love ❤️ my truck home / job. Best of both worlds.
I've been living in a Kenworth T680 for the past 3 years to save up for a house and I love it. basically I get paid to travel. In my unit I have a 27 inch smart TV and pay only $100 US for high-speed wifi at Pilot Flying J truck stops. it comes with a small fridge but I have a large cooler and a large cooler size deep freeze. I also picked up an air fryer/microwave so I can cook raw food. Chicken fingers galore! A Kuerig coffee maker and a toaster provide breakfast each day and since I'm single, the top bunk became a storage area for the coolers and a couple bins of anything else I want to store. I also had my mountain bike up there for a while but now I have a scooter folded up under the bed and several types of footware for weather changes.
I stay in here 2 to 3 weeks at a time and absolutely love it. Oh, and my passenger seat doubles as a massage chair or recliner for watching movies with hot popcorn.

I got to spend 2 weeks on the road with my dad before I moved to Europe and it was the best time ever. I learned how hard of a job it is, especially when waiting for the next load, ever increasing fuel prices, traffic jams, and just finding a place to rest. My dad's truck was much bigger than this Volvo. It was a Western Star and had an extended cab with a shower, toilet, kitchen and bunk beds. Pretty much his real home and now I can see why he'd stay away from mom for so long. Just dad, his dog, 12 string guitar and house on 18 wheels. God bless all of you truckers out there. You're the real heartbeat of America.

Sleeping in a big rig is just fine. I did so for 8 years-- OTR partly solo, partly team. I loved it.
I slept in a Volvo truck when i was a child during a 2 days trip with my dad. I still remember how great it was...
Jalopnik : Thank you for this video, and thank you, Volvo for helping to make this video possible. My mother died in June, 2000. For several years before she died, she had said many times that she wanted to go up inside one of those big trucks. She had heard many times just how nice they are.
I live in Graceville, Florida; and my parents lived just on down the road from me. Well, one day, a couple of months or so before she died, I had a doctor appointment at the V.A. hospital in Montgomery, Alabama; and Mother wanted to ride up there with me. She liked to get out every now and then. Well, on the way back, somewhere between Ozark and Dothan, I mentioned how she had been wanting to go up inside one of those big rigs, just to see how they are. Mother was tired and she said no. But then I told her, Mother, if you don't do it now, you may never get another chance to go up inside one." "Okay," she said.
So we stopped at the Volvo truck "store" in Dothan. I went inside and told them I had my 82 year old mother with me and she would like to go up and see inside one of their big trucks. She'd been wanting to for years to see inside one of those big rigs. Well, that impressed them, so they gave me a key and told me which one. The one we went inside, wasn't one of their biggest, but it was still nice. I had to pick up my mother to put her inside, she was so crippled with arthritis.
But once my mother got inside, she was like a little kid in a candy store. She was fascinated. Both my parents are gone, and I got the house. My kitchen has a lot of cabinets. This truck had almost as many cabinets. It had bunk beds. It two big, three drawer chests, a big screen TV. A big microwave. It had closet space. Mother was impressed. Well, when she got ready to leave, she wanted to go inside the building and thank them for letting us have this little tour. That impressed the staff. And less than two months later, Mother fell and hit her head on something, and was brain dead within 50 minutes. She died of a subdural hematoma. But that little experience with the Volvo big rig, was one of the most fascinating experiences in her life.
I was seriously expecting some suprise at the end but I genuinely feel for you man, sorry for your loss
She is at peace I am sure, not only did she depart after an amazing experience but gave this planet a gem in the form of a dutiful son.

If you're a long haul trucker, you don't have much time to play many video games. The time you have is for eating, showering and sleeping .
If you're a hardworking OTR driver, there's plenty of lazy fucks out there happy to do 34s and sit around doing nothing.
When the trucks become autonomous, you'll either be just sitting there in the cab in case the system needs an override or unemployed at home.

Unless it was a 78 Peterbilt with a two stroke Detroit and a 36 in "coffin" sleeper the loud vibrating engine could be tolerated after a while, but the smallness of a 36 in sleeper I could never get comfortable.
'78 Pete with a two-stroke. Now THAT'S old-time trucking.

I once drove a '72 Kenworth that had an 8v92 transplanted in it. The other two spare tractors were being used, so I got the Kenworth. The best part of it was when the mechanic pulled me aside to explain the gears...
"This is the main, and this is the brownie."
I responded with "Don't confuse me. Which one do I shift, and which one is the ranges?"
He just patted me on the back, and said "You'll do okay."
I did do fine that day, but if I would have had to accelerate up a hill from a stop, it would've been a long drive up as I would've had to go up in 1+4. I was a bit slow with the main.
I count myself as privileged as most people my age (50) have never even seen a two stick, let alone get to drive one.
As for the 8v92, I found it to be a well mannered, and very capable engine. No need to slam my hand in the door to get it to work, like all the stories that I've heard about the 8v71.
Lord Nerotix If you bring the RPM up to 900 to 1000, the fuel burns more completely, and the oil lubes better, so you don't wear out your cylinders.
That having been said, over time, the idling will take its toll. It's actually harder on the pocket book than it is on the engine. Fuel costs money.
This video and truck is cool I always knew semi trucks had this feature just didn't know what it looks like until now! Great video thanks for the tour!😊
I currently drive a 2020 freightliner cascadia and love it. I'm changing companies on November 10th and getting a 2022 cascadia with an apu. I can't wait.

Ladies of the evening.
Way of the road buddy!!!
This dude is really holding on to his hair. Like REALLY holding onto it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was thinking about that, it was the only I could focus on. I'm thinking just shave that shit off and grow out the beard.
Like how people just love to bitch about other people’s appearance, and when it’s dudes losing hait its apparently cool to do
@@danielvandam he's just pointing it out not bitching you lil bitch
Meh, i've seen worse
That was the only thing i noticed in this hole video. Lucky nowdays people can get away with shaved head without being called a nazi or mr. clean.
That’s more fancy and comfortable than my student apartment 👀😂
I spent 11 years crossing back and forth this beautiful country. Some of my best sleep was in my trucks. There is nothing like a Cummins idling all night or the hum of the APU running. I miss it at times.

*Alright RUclips recommended, you win this time*
Lol 😆
It's not bad sleeping in one sitting still, when you're team driving and passing through Memphis or Dallas you always know what city you're in and how much time you have left before it's your turn to drive 😂
Tory Z.
In Germany, you would not be allowed to sleep in it while someone else is driving
paul Joyko Interesting how different things are around the world.
@@pauljoyko5320 Gestapo coming to call?? Nothing changes!!!!
I don't know how anyone team drives unless it's with your wife or husband. Almost disgusting with all the farts, smells, etc in such a small place. On top of trusting your life in the hands of sometimes a stranger while you're trying to sleep..
Dick Burt well it has to be someone you get along with and has the same mentality when it comes to cleanliness, I've team drove with a few people and had to demand that they find me a different team mate because of hygiene, lack of safety etc... as far as trusting someone with your life it's a two way street there, they feel the same about you also lol it's like this the way I see it God decides when I die, if I live my life in fear of what could happen I'll never truly live!
That so cool and snuggly.
I just saw a short video on how a truck driver stays safe inside the truck while sleeping. I didn’t know that trucks got hijacked and broken into so much.
Thanks for delivering
When I was about 16 my Dad's friend let me ride with him. I wanted to experience it. The first stop I got a cheeseburger and it was so good I got one to go. He drove all night. I tried to sleep in the bunk but the ride was so ruff - just bounced up and down all night and could not sleep.
We got there early the next morning and he had to unload. He drove back. It was boring after the first couple of times I watched him shift gears. I had a 4 speed in my car and had thought it would be fun to see how shifting was done.
The best part of the trip was the cheeseburgers. Man they were good.
lw216316 man i wish i had something like that with my dad ! I want one of those cheeseburgers !
OK Jalopnik... now for the Reality Check! Very few truck drivers are in a truck this nice. When on the road for weeks at a time, a driver wakes up in his bunk, in a rest area, or on an off-ramp in the middle of now-where. He/She has not had a shower in 2-3 days and is feeling really Nasty! (hint: no shower in the truck). You then have to go down the road, a Truck Stop, buy at least 100 gallons of fuel to get a "free" shower, or pay several dollars to use a shower that hopefully has been cleaned after the last few uses! Oh yea, you usually have to sit around for an hour or two, waiting your turn for the privilege of "getting clean".
And this is only the tip of the Iceberg Jalopnik... so please, Do Not try to Glorify "Big Rig Sleeping"!
Speeding Cops North Carolina dont forget no bathroom
Bro its not that bad. You must not use your time wisely and trip plan or even have a descent company
You said a mouthful ther brother
Jabbsole sorry jabby, you supertrucker you. He probably drove when I did years ago when you gave the scalemaster the company's spare tire or yourwatch for overweight ticket. Or tried to shower in Crowley, La standing in 3" of water that won't drain. Yep nowdays all you guys know are interstates and clocks and computers and phones in your trucks. Im not knocking it. I would have loved to run a legal log and still made good money. GPS to keep from getting lost going into Hunts Point in the bronx or Pabst in Newark. Anyway don't mean to sound know it all but you sound like you have the truckers paradise job. More power to you.
Also, since the early 70's, my answer to all the govt and 4-wheeler complaints is this: Put all truck drivers on the clock. ALL. No one would ever speed, modify a log book, and would spend all the time necessary making truck weight compliant. Company owners say they'd go broke, they want the driver to take all the risks and it doesn't make up for your losses, the wages they pay.
Perfect truck for bringing lot lizards back to as well
0:53 me budgeting my food
Ah, yes... The full "trucking experience".
Except for the people knocking on your door begging for money handouts (or in exchange for sex acts), cops pounding on your door telliing you to move because an unpublished city ordinance disallows overnight parking, constant harassment by highway patrol, food poisoning from spoiled food, dispatchers telling you to run days this weeks and nights next, crappy pay for work no one wants to do and companies complaining about not finding enough drivers while behaving as though they could replace you at a moments notice.
But, yeah. You slept in a brand new Volvo in a parking lot. That's the full experience.
Running a dedicated route (for example Dollar Tree, Wal-Mart, etc) helps with some of that, but ya, agreed, not the FULL experience.
Wild Man who got the kids? With you? In mine she did ( 2 dogs)
trucking for 19 years, used to really love it on the road I mean really love it, late 1990s early 2000s local guy now the road sucks regulations bullshit and disrespect !!!!
Also your health suffering because you sit all day and eat at truck stops. Also showering. And loneliness.
I felt a lot better after I got an electric hot plate and started cooking a basic meal instead of truck stop food. I made rice, throw in slices of fresh bell peppers and onions, toss in some meat and/or eggs and seasoning. I changed it up by using red beans, black beans, corn, wrap it in a tortilla and make it southwestern-y. Add raw avocado or other fruits/veggies and throw in whatever produce you find ripe at local stores.
Eating healthy on the road is huge.
whisperingwind2 you just gave the best trucking advice in this comment section.
I started driving in the 70s in cabovers and I still slept better in the truck than any motel sometimes when I went home if it was raining I'd sleep in the truck instead of the house the rain on the roof was soothing funny my dad drove truck when he retired and bought a motorhome I'd go visit and he'd be out taking a nap in his RV
Sounds fun
@Yard Sale Dale when I ran reefer I slept good while it was running if it shut off the quiet would wake me
Dewayne Miguel That’s probably gonna be me
Crazy what we end up getting comfortable with out here. Think back to your rookie days. I bet you had a terrible time sleeping. Now when I'm home, I wake up every couple hours because I think something is wrong with the truck. Turns out I'm not in a truck, but I don't know that in my sleep. Oh well. Just another reason to keep running and not turn around.
sounds to be fun dear
My guy is tweakin 😂
This is nice, better than I thought
I lived in a semi for several years. I finally felt like I was in a coffin one day and quit truckin.. I'd stay out 5 to 6 weeks at a time and got burned out on it.
Derek Johansen TiDom I drove for Crete and Dart.. I quit in 2009, I let my CDL expire in 2011, I have no desire to ever drive again. I drove from 2001 to 2009 and made good money but it went to crap when the economy tanked. I abandoned my truck in a truck stop and never looked back. I went back to school and got an electrical engineering degree.
Derek Johansen TiDom congrats to you! I wish you luck in your new venture..
Josey Wales man good for you that’s gotta be a rough life on the road all the time
Derek Johansen TiDom 85k a year. U r a loser. Pull oversized loads with ur own Authority to unlock Real Men money.
Josey Wales I did the exact same thing!
After 20 years of driving, I can say this with some authority. Living in a truck, even a really nice one, is just living in a nice prison cell. Try spending weeks at a time in that little box never being able to leave it for longer than a meal and a shower. Add to that long weekends sitting in a truck stop waiting for a business to open so you can drop or load and you have the makings of a shit career.
556blackwater dont forget the love of your life runs off with some one else.
A prison cell that allows you to see the country...
I never experienced it but that's why I keep trying to talk my brother out of it. He goes on trips for a week or two at a time with a buddy of his but he's got anxiety like crazy and hates being cramped up for very long. He also hates not seeing my mom for very long either and he wants to do the long haul. I honestly think he's going to hate it but he likes seeing new places and he's solely thinking about that and nothing else. He'd not be able to see his kids and fiance for quite a while either.
Trevor C from the highway at 65 mph.
Ken James thats the truth
Always wondered what the inside of these long haul trucks looked like up to date wow very cool thanks for look
I'm glad you had a nice overnight experience, but you were very fortunate that Volvo provided you with their top of the line truck model, the 780. However, the vast majority of companies dont buy that model, opting instead for the smaller (and much more basic) 670.
Again, glad you had a nice night, but it would have been a better and truer experience to not have all the frills that Volvo provided in the display model.
Or more realistically starting off he'll be in an 8 year old Cascadia with 800,000 miles first starting off with AC that may or may not work, it's not gonna have all that fancy crap that one has may not even have as big of a sleeper, and it's gonna smell like cheap cologne, cigarettes and depression.
This a modern sleeper which most truckers don’t have a luxury of. So go buy an old sleeper truck and try that out
You are incorrect. If any long haul trucker on the road in the u.s. has a truck that is older than 5 years it's by their choice. Most larger truck companies sell their trucks at the 3-5 year mark.
@@J_Dog9411 YEA like a typucal international with the mattress getting the full Minnesota winter time 20below cold thru the uninsulated side doors.. And the f'n thing would not idle past ten minuits because the cheep lien owner didnt want to replace a defective ecm.! Then theres the truck stop with trucks comming and going and the load of pigs that slips into that spot just vacated by a reefer with a bad muffler!
Fallin but why continue driving for that owner I that case? In trucking unless ur a terrible driver u can get another job within hours
J_Dog 45 exactly. Even swift runs relatively new trucks
Run teams in an old cabover. That's a rough night...
Nice. Better than any hotel room
I am 64 & ran long haul back in 80s-90s, most of the time I drove a COE Navstar or a Pete COE. trucks sure have changed over the years. I remember the first time I saw a refrigerator for a truck. We bought one & had it sitting on the doghouse. As for the sleeper. When I was assigned a truck, the first thing we did was stop at a truck stop. They sold small cans of lysol spray. We would put the mattress on it's side & use the whole can of lysol all over it, then open the vents in the sleeper. We would give around 1 hr. to let the lysol work & to air out the truck too. The reason we did that was the mattress was used by drivers before me. We had no idea what was on them. Then we would put down a clean sheet & pillow too . All truckers I knew did that. I have been told by truckers that company's give them a new mattress for each new driver now. We only had heat/AC if the engine was running. Also the CB was a life line for us too. I heard not many truckers use them much anymore. Just wanted to let you guys know what it was like back in the day.
I like how they gave him the nicest fucking one ever
Except 99%of company trucks won't have the fridge, microwave or inverter
No actually they do the company's are trying to keep the drivers they have
Uhhh I guess my company isn’t trying.... we have one super small bed hahahaha
Shane Varley US is suffering from a trucker shortage so most likely you’ll start seeing more and more luxuries given to truckers in an attempt
To retain as many as possible.
You work for a shitty company if you think 99% don't have a fridge, microwave or inverter.
Yeah only my latest has a built in inverter. Had to provide the microwave and powered cooler myself. Baaasic fleet models. Kept seeing the new LTs driving down the road, LEDs, fog lights. Ours? Halogens and and some household plugs.
Beautiful truck! Absolutely love LOVE ❤ the color.
I drove cross country for year's, my rig was equipped with everything, I always felt safe at night in my sleeper😎👍
This dude seems like a proper genuine guy, not a fake personality. Awesome stuff
I use to drive in the south Texas oil fields. Had a mack , I got better sleep than at home, would stop after unloading at a rig on the ranch, had my best friend ( labrador) with me, everything was good.
Yep drove those water haulers myself for years down around Odessa, Iraan, and Ozona. Haul a load of water to the rig, then run over pick up a load of oil then to the pipeline station, then do it all over again. Didn't get much sleep but the pay was great.
Sounds amazing. Wish i had that sleep with my pet
lol got me happy when he was so excited playing that superboy hyperkin thing.
That truck color is gorgeous!!!
