As a retired truck driver the best advice I can give is invest in a mini fridge, an electric stovetop, a nice TV/computer, a small grill for summer, adblocker for listening to things on youtube, A dehydrator for fruits and meats. Use truck stops for showers, laundry, and socializing. But don't give in and buy their over priced stuff. Plan your comfort accordingly. It's key for the long haul. Drive safe. Love from Wisconsin!
Very good advice. It's also healthier to make your own food than giving the truck stops lots of money for deep fried artery cloggers. I started cooking a lot of beans and lentils in my little truck stove and lost 40 lbs.
I love Wisconsin. The people there are so laid back and pleasant. I'm also amused that there are places with posted speed limits for snow mobiles.

@@accobra4272 Love's is a funny one too because they don't allow you to bobtail and leave your trailer there, so if you didn't bring it, you don't have it. I never cared. I'd leave my trailer there and save my spot or park my tractor-trailer at a Walmart or a Pick n Save, run in get what I need.
I was a motorhomer when my wife was alive. We always stopped at truck stops to eat, fuel up or whatever. They were great. How I miss that life and her. We always traveled with our kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats and a bird. Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end.
How life moves on and things change. Now I am closer to the end than the beginning and only have fond memories of the good life.

We all look back on life and always say, I wish I woulda......If I had my way over again, I would have stayed in the military for 30 or 35 years and retired nicely, but I hated Vietnam and Pres. Johnson so I got out. I wish I would have gone into the trucking industry as I love to drive. I put a lot of miles on my motorhome and followed many a trucker to break wind. But, I stayed a long ways back as not to bother them. As I said, my life has changed, I live in Costa Rica and am married to a Nicaraguan who has a 14 yr old boy who is not the student type. I want to start guiding him into trucking. Here in CR truckers make a decent living but I want him to learn the ropes and send him to the US. Here there are many truckers and I tell them to get a work visa go to the US. I'd like to know how to make a connection for these guys, as I hear that there is a shortage of trucker drivers. Thanks again.

As a truck driver for 28 years now, it’s nice to see the positive comments regarding truck drivers and their appreciation for what we do. It doesn’t matter who you are, it’s always nice to be appreciated for what you do. Most of us try our best to be courteous to others on (and off) the road and are doing our very best to deliver freight for you, the American public. Drive safe out there!
Driving a truck is one of those jobs that no one even knows you are doing it until you stop. It is hard on the body, both mentally and physically. You can pass a thousand of them in a day and think nothing of them, then you see one in a crash and think wow, those are dangerous. The vast majority of the time the truckers are not at fault. Long way of saying than you for your service I guess.
I appreciate you for what you do man--the real heros that keep the economy glued together!

While returning from Disney world with my family, we accidentally found this place. We were so amazed. We could not leave. I had my retired military cap on and a trucker brought me breakfast. Coming from a family of truck drivers I have nothing but respect for the job. I believe it is the most underrated job today. Go truckers. Thanks.

Most truck stop are not that big or look like that inside. My husband is a truck driver. I been to a lot when we traveled for a year

A top tip for non truck drivers: Most truck stop showers are available for anybody to use, not just truck drivers, for a small fee. Truck stops can be a great resource for everybody going down the highway. For example...they are usually pretty busy and make for a safer place to get some rest than a random wide spot on the road.
Showers are not a small fee...from 10 and up.

@@sachsgs2509 Ok. Those that think truck stop showers are too expensive, don't have to use them daily...or at all. It's personal choice. Personally...I like the option of a truck stop shower especially when there are precious few other convenient 24/7 options. But to each their own.

Of course if you have fuel points(Pilot FJ etc...) it's free
My husband and I stopped many times at this particular truck stop when we drove together…they even have a little clothing store and laundromat…one of my faves…
Being away from home for weeks at a time isn’t easy and trucking in general is really hard at times but I loved seeing the country…especially when we drove through cool little historic towns…
It can get expensive eating on the road and we got burned out on eating at restaurants all the time so I set up a mini kitchen in our truck…I had a college sized fridge, microwave, crockpot (with plastic liners for easy cleanup) and a George Foreman…sometimes when we’d park and open the doors other drivers would say, “DAMN!!! Something smells good in there!!!”
Thank you to all the truckers still out there (including my husband) busting their tails to make sure the rest of us have the things most people take for granted will be at the stores when we need them…
Next time you go to Walmart or any other store, including gas stations, remember a truck driver delivered EVERYTHING you’re purchasing…

After 22 years of factory life, I finally turned in my resignation. I start CDL school in Detroit in 3 days. I am beyond excited. It's channels like these that have helped me into making this life changing decision.
best of luck to you. I am 6 months into driving, completely new to me. Did not come from a family of truckers, I never knew a trucker until I started. Watch youtube videos and you get a pretty accurate understanding of what it is like. I have been to this truck stop few times, and parking at truck stops is initially very intimidating for new drivers.

@@bryang6271 it’s not too bad, I drive for TMC and I can get home regularly every weekend. If you have a family/kids it might be harder idk I don’t have any. I love to listen to podcasts and I have all the time in the world to do that. It’s cool to see the country. Right now I’m in Alabama heading to Mississippi, earlier this week I was in West Virginia.. but six months in and I’m wondering how long I’m going to do this. The downside is I’m extremely lonely I literally have no friends. But don’t give up in the first week or two. It gets easier. I also drive flatbed trucks and don’t do extremely long routes from coast to coast I think box trucks do those. Maybe Prime, idk still fairly new. I’ll stop rambling. Good luck, you’ve got this!

There was a lady your age along with her husband at my trucking driving school.
When I see big trucks on the road, I always try to help them out. Giving them space to pass, letting them know it is safe to get over, etc.. I realize doing that job is hard and if I can do something to help out I do. Thank you to all truckers!

Chris, the idea that you acknowledge the need for extra space for moving, turning, extra time for braking; payment enough. Sometimes it appears most folks think we can turn and stop on a dime; not so much. A little respect can go a long way

I grew up less than a quarter mile from a truck stop. Wasn't nearly that big but it was my first job back in 1995. things have definitely changed. The one I worked at had only 5 private showers and they were really small but nice. We provided towels and soap but it was cheap old towels and crappy soap... Those look amazing. Glad some places make showers comfortable for truckers. Small things sometimes make a difference
I always carried my own soap and the like, just used the towels provided, FYI, the service plazas on the Ohio turnpike have showers for truckers, I carried my own towels for those occasions.

Yeah I felt bad for what we offered but I was just a kid. So I made sure I cleaned them really well and put in fresh towels and new soap. Least I could do for hard workers.

I've been driving 21 yrs. As a woman I'm happy with the improvements in truck stops over the years. When I first started most of them were awful.
Now you can have your period in style.
There are always a few nasty ones, but the big Petros were usually a pretty good bet. Stay safe.

In 2009 I went on the road with my boyfriend. It was an eye opening experience. I saw the Midwest with all the farms surrounded by trees and nothing else. I saw the wind mill farms and the giant truck stops. At one point in San Antonio’s we were caught in a blizzard for 3 days. I was out with him for a month and will remember it forever. I wish more people could ride along with a trucker to see all they do.

Also, I never knew there were truck stops so elaborate! In some of my long car road trips out west here, the truck stops I used had a well-equipped bathroom, a drinking fountain and that was it. I have the ultimate respect for long-haul truckers, they keep America's economy going, so I'm glad to see that many truck stops are much fancier than I had personally seen.

Honestly, whenever I drive, I tend to become frustrated whenever I am stuck behind a truck on the highway. I forget there is a person inside trying to make a living. I need to remember this more. Thank you for everything you do- you guys truly are the backbone of our country. If not for your sacrifice of time away from your families and the millions of miles you drive, this country would crumble. Awesome video and very informative! I have to ask- is 14 dollars for a shower the norm? That seems expensive..
$14 is the norm. But something that most truck stops will do is give you a free shower if you fuel there. I’m assuming he didn’t want to fuel there so he paid the $14
I'm a semi truck driver and I often think when climbing a steep grade road that is single lane "oh, the four wheelers behind me are pissed/frustrated lol, but I am going as quickly as possible"

I save the four wheelers the bother and get mad at my own truck. Like from the instant I get turned onto the ramp, my foot’s on the floor. Back when I had a standard, I’d be pounding through the gears, could be going about sixty by the time I merge, now, though the trucks have a bit more enthusiasm, the automateds are lucky to get going fifty. I respect the road drivers a good bit more than I do myself, I work daylight, home every evening by supper. I am contracted to a grocery store. These folks who are on the road for days, if not weeks on end, like some of my classmates in orientation, are as close to Cledus Snow and Martin Penwald as DOT and FMCSA will allow. From one driver to all the OTR folks on the road, thank y’all, I appreciate y’all for giving up your time to move the country.
And I’d figure fourteen dollars is about right, being local, I don’t use them at the stops, but with how much fuel I burn, I get shower credits daily. Fifty gallons gets you a shower credit at the big chains, Pilot-Flying J, Loves (the two my company uses) and TA. My last company let us fuel wherever we pleased, so we went to whatever chain we used for our personal vehicles, and raked in the savings.
$14 is normal BUT and as a four-wheeler this is good information for you. There are two entrances in every truck stop....one for Truckers and one for yall. Watch the Trucker entrance and simply ask a Trucker for them to give you a shower. We gather shower credits at most stops and share them freely. I just had a guy the other night ask and I gladly gave him one of my credits. All I would ask in exchange would be a simple courtesy at Subway or Mc d's and tell me to go in front of you in line. This "Stop" is for Truckers and if you 4-wheelers would let us get what we need so we can keep giving You what you want, things would work better.

Watching this from my hotel room. I am incredibly happy to be with a company that lets me drive a daycab half around the country and pays for hotel rooms every night. Much respect for all the hard working men and women doing the truck stop shuffle every day.
I have pots and pans, a butane cooker, microwave, fridge, a coffee maker a crockpot. It gets expensive if you constantly do fast food. Be safe out there bud. Subscribed.
Not just expensive, but unhealthy food on the road. There is reason most truckers.are oveweight/ morbidly obese.
I found that out the hard way my first year trucking haha gained a bunch of weight and spent a lot of money.
My son can really cook and eat healthy in his truck as well. He uses his butane one burner all the time and also has a freezer onboard. Stay safe and may your guardian angel always be near.
Do you have to pay for parking / overnighting at the truck stops ? Or do the facilities make money off gas and restaurants ?
@@eastcorkcheeses6448 Most truckstops are free. Parking is extremely hard to find in some parts of the country, mostly in the northeast where you will pay to park at a truckstop. Almost all cities are woefully lacking in parking.

I was a truck driver, and staying at a Truck stop, you meet a lot of interesting people. Show some stuff that a driver has to do, to stay up to date in case of Highway patrol and scales.

This is one of the reasons I like RUclips. You can get a glimpse of other people's careers and lives. I don't know how truckers keep their cool. I practically have a nervous breakdown just driving to work every day.
We try not to go through your city when you’re driving to or from work. Most people are in a hurry and these rigs don’t stop short very well. We’d prefer not going over the top of you on your commute because you’ve missed your exit.

Shout out from Québec! I was in crutches during all of Covid and I got both hips replaced. Long recovery at 41 yo. I told myself: "Why not go back to school?" I'm currently finishing Transports and Logistics in college and I'm just a week shy from my internship at Prelco.
They make truck glass, bullet-resistant glass, and special construction projects, and my job will be to dispatch and keep an eye on all the boys and girls like you who deliver orders all over the globe.

I appreciated that his truck cab interior is pretty realistic for many truck drivers. Adequate but spartan! There was no interior kitchen, shower etc...this is where the guy lives for most of his 24 hour typical day on the road. It is a different lifestyle! It can be a physically and mentally demanding but VERY rewarding career! I drove for 6 years like this virtually non stop....no pun intended! The cool thing is once you adopt and embrace the lifestyle many of the folks you meet are your instant
family. I found the level of courtesy, driver professionalism, basic honesty and loyalty driver to driver refreshing! And some of those truck stops....mamma mia.....incredible food!
I drive a good amount during the week to see my girlfriend. She lives 2 hours away with no traffic. I’ve always considered being a truck driver but I’ve heard you don’t get much family time. Either way, thanks for all you guys do. Seriously. This country (USA) wouldn’t run without y’all. Same with other countries too

Then I need to do 2 years driving here in the UK (on our tiny, in comparison, roads) then I can get the opportunity to drive for a U.S. or Canadian company and immigrate overseas to start living my dream...Your videos and info on Trucking, is invaluable..its so important to get an idea of what its going to be like. Now that is a truck stop! I live in the UK and everyone is complaining about the facilities. Love the shower set up with the signing in system, never seen anything like that, very impressive!
This truck stop has a phone app like the other big truck stops. You can reserve a shower with your phone before you even enter the building and the app will tell you which shower room is reserved for you along with the security code to enter the room.

Wow, it's been many a moon since I've been to a truck stop. Got my CDL in 2010, drove 18 wheelers for a little while, now I'm driving school buses for a private catholic school. Still it's good to see not much has changed. Drive safely!

This is a dream job for an introvert like myself but I was always skeptical about cleanliness because yeah ODC is real. Glad to see there is some form of daily normalcy in this profession. You did a great job letting us behind the curtain, thank you.
If I didn’t have kids I would be living the truck life with no worries, I’ll set up everything so tidy and creatively that I wouldn’t need for nothing but what I have in my truck, just food and shower everyday and tv for my shows and movies

I'm just a motorist but used to do a 800 mile roundtrip once a week for work. I see other motorists do crappy things to semi drivers, cut them off and just make their day more difficult.
I go out of my way to cut you all a break. Flash my headlights to give you a heads up to go ahead and merge etc. You guys keep our economy and life going.

Thanks for the video and insight on what you do. I appreciate what you guys do cuz I used to commute 4 hours a day to work and back home so I can relate to what it’s like being on the road. You have to always be alert of other drivers, your own driving , the weather, etc..
Great Video Big Rig Pro, If any new truckers are watching this or other videos and in case they don't say it, these truck stops do a very good job of cleaning showers/bathrooms but i would highly recommend shower shoes / flipflops. Also get you a member rewards card for all truck stops that you plan on fueling up at, most times 1 fillup will get you enough points for a free shower.
For a few years in the 80s I frequently traveled around the country in my 67 VW Camper. Truck stops were great place to get a shower, and they were usually free in those days! They were a good place to stop overnight, too...no one ever seemed to care when I parked in amongst the big rigs. You could usually find a decent breakfast, too, before hitting the road next morning.
Being part of a team it is especially hard to find a place to park anywhere. Usually we swap driving while fueling. Of course we're quick so that we don't block the fuel lanes. The only time we get to park and take showers is in the afternoon. Since we're a team we very rarely get to go home.

Good video...years ago some were not so good depending where you were. I avoided the "pickle parks" at all costs...way too many "lot lizards" and "weiner washers". One of the first things I learned at any truck stop...stay off the back row...it's called "party row" for a reason. Truck stops have improved over the years...and a good one is always appreciated. Good also for people on vacations, showers for a small fee, food, drinks, and the kids like looking at all the big rigs, get out walk around, or just catch a nap etc. Most guys and gals out there are pretty nice, friendly etc. Please remember...don't follow us so close if behind us...if we have to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident...you could go right under us...not good at all. Everyone be safe out there and enjoy your ride whatever it may be.
I remember traveling and stopped at one of these kinds of truck stops. I was amazed at how NICE it was. It had restaurants (both sit-down and fast food ones), a gift shop, and even a Cinnabon. There were lots of people -- lots of families -- and it was terrific. Behind it was a huge lot filled with trucks. What was so interesting was that it was located in the middle of nowhere, so I didn't expect it, but it was like an oasis.

As a part time nomad and overlander, I appreciate the trails already blazed by truckers. After 4 days or a week without a decent bath, it's because of truckers I can usually find a place, not too far away to clean up, fuel up and restock, plus I get to spend the night there if need be. Not to mention the fact that they are the ones who deliver the food for me and my pony. I love to browse the "trucker aisles" for useful items for camping. One of my favorite items is the RoadPro stove. Perfect for cooking a meal while driving down the road.
When I began Trucking in 1977 there were very very few modern truck stops. I drove coast to coast till 1988. A few years went by before plug in heating and cooling fridge types came available. Brakes had to be adjusted before long downgrades. Always. We got by is what counts.

I've been a driver for almost 30 years and I've got to check this out. I recognized White's from the parking lot. I shower where I fuel, they're free and I always get a towel and wash cloth. Man o day, 4:30 is not morning for me, lol. I'm dedicated now, out one day, home the next so I do a wash up in the truck and can stay out the showers but you did a good job showing what it's like. I used to be OTR now local/regional. This is a GREAT video. After watching this video with my wife she wants to spend the night/take a shower at a truck stop. You changed her mind about the stereotype truck stop. Good job
I spent lots of time at the White travel center. When I was training my trainer did a dedication from Golden CO. to Elkton VA. We always stopped there. That Petro I think had the best buffet out of the ones that had buffets. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for letting us into your trucking world. Truckers perform vital services. They handle big rigs 🚛 in crowded roads, which beyond my driving skill. I used to fantasize or romanticize about driving a truck across Country for a living. Hat off to the men and women truckers.

I've always respected big rig drivers. It is an important profession for all of us. The video shows that conditions are pretty good but still I respect you guys for the time alone on the road and , what to me, would be a disrupting sort of lifestyle. Much respect. Stay safe and thank you.
I ran cross country for UPS for about 13 years out of the 41 I worked there. I loved Petro's, Iron Skillet had good food. What I liked is they always had two kinds of home made soup plus the salad bar. When you eat junk a lot of the time its nice to get some soup and salad.
The one thing I miss the most of driving is, the night driving, good coffee along with great music. So many memories, and experiences lived on the road.
I do alot of road tripping on my touring motorcycle. I absolutely love stopping at these big truck stops. Best places to meet and talk to all kinds of folks around the country. I dont sleep at them, I usually camp at campgrounds. But great places to take a rest, get gas, and some food/drink, etc. Also, just wanted to say I have the utmost respect for truckers. Stay safe out there!

I just graduated from truck driving school and about to start my new driving job with a trucking company after the holidays. I am so nervous and a little scared at the same time lol

I love camping at truck stops when on a road trip...The sound and rumble of the freit trucks plus the feeling of being far away is always exciting for me ☺️☺️☺️🇺🇸
I’m a local driver now, paid by the hour, and home every day. But when I was on the road, I hated truckstops. Everything was so expensive. And they get so crowded it’s hard to even get in and out of them from 4pm till the next morning. I liked to shower on my 30 minute break, and do my sleeping at shippers and receivers if they’d let me.

Really cool vid man. Spent 6 weeks over the road with my father when I was 18 and it was an education (free shower with fuel up, etc.). Hard way to make a living but really cool at the same time. Stay safe, cheers :)

Why ? What did you expect ? I spent 38 yesrs driving semi's all over this country , it is not a job , it is a life style, huge turn over in trucking,, it's a tough life , young people arent tough now days

You're right they are cleaner than one would expect. There are a few that are nasty though usually the smaller truck stops. I think it was a Pilot truck stop in Hempsted Tx I was at and it was like a 5 star hotel shower. Huge and clean. You could of played racquet ball in it. (Almost)
That's beautiful country. Please show us more scenery from your travels. I wish I could drive all over the USA but my arthritis won't let me sit for much more than 45 minutes without having to get up any walk around, or my joints freeze up. Thanks for the tour!

When I started driving 25yrs ago I couldn't afford the extra goodies for my truck. When I finally had a little fridge and microwave in the truck I felt like I was living high on the hog ! LOL🤗
Retired Trucker here, one thing I did miss are those truck stop showers, most had high pressure and unlimited hot water
After 35 years Trucking (retired ), I can DEFINITELY relate to Truck Stop sleeper uhhh, sleeping!

$14 for a shower? I remember camping at a Wisconsin County Campground back in the late '80s and a shower cost 10 cents LOL
