a protective cap on the spark plug, paper or plastic, is needed for transportation so that the electrode does not break, and for us)) for installation. since the grease from the fingers will act on the spark plug like a light bulb. and this information I didn’t come up with, but information from Bosch back in 1996.
Better loose than tight, once the engine is warm it expands, so chance of a belt being loose not a real worry, the vertical cylinder runs hotter by my accounts. Used a tuning app on my iPhone to check my belts, I prefer 80-90hz
I agree, once the initial stretch has happened I am happy as long as the belt sits above the service limit, I went with 90Hhz to reset the vertical as it then matched the horizontal cylinder.
@@DesmoWerx I started work on my second 748 S frame today, the motor has the early castings 97 like the other engine I have in my other bike. I believe these early bikes have better better valve train parts, we discussed case differences in another post. So far the motor I bought for $400.00 for my other bike has given me 6k with no issues, well not entirely issue free, I've got a slow cam seal leak on my vertical cylinder, I'll be checking into that eventually, for now plan is to get the second bike going for beating around town naked on .... lol
Newly subscribed and just love your content. Very, very helpful so a BIG Thank You. I have recently acquired a 996 which I am hoping to track and your vids will provide immense help. Looking forward to the fork strip.
Another top video, very methodical, I've been restoring my 748 Over the winter, you could not make it up, I have a box of nos 748 engine spares and guess what's in there? A new horizontal inspection cover that the v piece bolts to. Are you on any of the forums in the UK?
Superb video as always mate, I look forward to them! I had the same problem with the threads stripping on my inspection cover, so put helicoils in. I bought a replacement, but it’s a big bigger so I’m guessing it’s for a 916 model. If you’ve got the details for the firm in the states, I’ll have a look with those guys :-)
Going to try Andy, it depends on whether the arm has enough spare metal to take it out slightly and fit the helicoil, being a cast cover it is quite weak in that area. Wont do any harm to try though.
Enjoying your videos, I’m doing a restoration on a 998 right now, can you recommend a decent closing shim measurement tool? There’s a lot of crap out there
HI Andy, I got mine years ago from EMS when I bought some of their tools and shim packs. I think the owner no longer trades but EMS still operate via someone else.
Very interesting, i also might have a problem with this sensor on my 996. Is there a literary value for the resistance of this sensor or did you just compare old to new?
Love your videos. Thank you. Referred to last year's thunderbike build series with the assembly and installation of my 853 conversion. One question, why would you not use a helicoil /recoil repair on the oil cooler guard fairing. That would make it better than new I reckon. Cheers
Going to try a helicoil repair but don't know if there is enough metal to open the hole and still retain the strength in the arm of the cover. Glad the build series was of help to you :)
Hi Sarah, I use Wheel Cleaner as its good for getting the brake dust and track rubbish off the wheel, and then Engine Degreaser for removing the Chain Wax. The blue bottles are Soapy water and Plain water to carry our general cleaning and washing the products away.
Hi Julius, You can find them on line on Ebay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ducati-Cam-Belt-Tension-Tool/303381505746?fits=UKM_Make%3ADucati&hash=item46a2f266d2:g:S8IAAOSwsbhd3wfZ Or you can use your phone with a good microphone and guitar tuning software.
That's why people avoid working on them but it all makes it more fun when working on them. The sensor shims are used as there are different tolerances between all the parts used.
My problem is the same. Around 9000rpm the bike have a very short moment lose power. Like if miss the electricity. Somethings also follow by an explosions but not always. I note it also happen when I hardly open the gas and in the second shift.

Good advice, I have noticed this on some plugs but not on others. Tthanks :)
I’ve always been nervous tearing into my duc but you make it look so easy.
They are easy to work on, take the leap :)
I am trying to demystify them for everyone by sharing my knowledge.

Great video - looking forward to the next one. Very interested in 748 - might need to have one :-)
You can never have enough Ducati's in your life 😎
You definitely deserve more subs, brilliant videos mate👍🏻
Cheers Mick, glad you like the channel and content :)

Welcome Richard, they are great bikes when at home on the track :)
A most interesting watch as always. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us all and looking forward as always to the next video. Top man!
Thanks Burtsterable, glad you are enjoying the videos :)
It’s looking good for 2020. Best of luck at Brands!
Cheers Rob, looking forward to it :)
Another brilliant one. Thanks!
Thanks Richard, glad you enjoyed it :)
Hi Nellie, glad to see this new video!
What kind of socket/tool do you use for the spark plug? I torque the spark by hand with the OEM tool.
Hi Trevor,
It is a 16mm thin wall Socket and normal 3/8th drive ratchet.
@@DesmoWerx thanx Nellie!

Ooh, I am on the Ducati Forum in the UK or my email address is in the channel page. :)
I bet the loose electrode in that plug you pulled out was the source of your hot ignition problem!
Unfortunately not, it was the new ignition pick up I fitted 😒
Great video. Good luck this season.
Thanks Will, hoping to have a good full season this year :)
Bienvenido, me encantan tus videos. Disfruto mucho
Gracias por mirar, me alegro de que disfrutes los videos.

Thanks for the compliment :)
This is the link to the supplier in the US and their ebay shop www.ebay.co.uk/str/hdesausa
Adam could you not fit a helicoil to one of those caps? Bike looks amazing mate.

The music has changed😱. Just got used to the old sounds and now .... Hope the electronic gremlins are sorted.
Lol, forever changing the tunes :)
Hoping I have sorted the electrical gremlin, time will tell. This is the trouble with an intermittent fault.
I have a 916 with the same stripped bolt hole for the cowl. Can you share the US company where I can get a replacement cover?
Hi Norm,
These guy's sell them www.ebay.co.uk/usr/hdesa.atelier?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
Please could you tell me what is the Auto Glym product you spray on your bike and rear wheel & what is in the blue spray bottle?
Hi Sarah,
I use Wheel Cleaner as its good for getting the brake dust and track rubbish off the wheel, and then Engine Degreaser for removing the Chain Wax. The blue bottles are Soapy water and Plain water to carry our general cleaning and washing the products away.
@@DesmoWerx Thanks for that, always useful to see what other products folk use 👍🏍
If you'd still had the rear wheel on, could you not put it in gear and rotate the wheel instead of using the Ducati crank-rotator tool?
Yes, you can if the plugs are out. It takes a little more effort and is not as easy to get accurately in place but will work :)
Please help me out. Where can I get a tensioner tool .
Hi Julius,
You can find them on line on Ebay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ducati-Cam-Belt-Tension-Tool/303381505746?fits=UKM_Make%3ADucati&hash=item46a2f266d2:g:S8IAAOSwsbhd3wfZ

A special tool to turn over the engine and crank position sensor shims?? Ducatis are weird.
That's why people avoid working on them but it all makes it more fun when working on them. The sensor shims are used as there are different tolerances between all the parts used.
@@DesmoWerx yeah I figured but in 25 years as an automotive mechanic I've never seen a crank sensor that needed to be shimmed.
What are you using to clean the bike? Anything special?
I use Autoglym a mix of either of Engine Degreaser or Wheel Cleaner. The wheel cleaner is good for shifting chain lube.
What was the defect on the bike induced by the sensor?
I was suffering a miss fire, it appears the problem still exists though, I will solve this eventually as its intermittent it is hard to find.
My problem is the same. Around 9000rpm the bike have a very short moment lose power. Like if miss the electricity. Somethings also follow by an explosions but not always. I note it also happen when I hardly open the gas and in the second shift.
Don’t touch ceramic spark in hand
. Only tools.
