If his overhead was at least mid-pack, he'd be a contender.

    If you guys are interested in OD Wilson, do yourselves a favour and watch Pure Strength 1989 and 1990 on RUclips where he teams up with Kaz in a series of great events devised by Geoff Capes. Jamie Reeves and Magnus also compete. They are the best strongman contests I’ve seen bar WSM 1988.

    • @thelionofgod
      @thelionofgod 4 года назад +4

      You're thinking of Pure Strength 1989, although that's not quite what happened. They were doing a loading medley up a hill and through the castle gates. OD and Kaz were on the same team. OD lost his balance carrying a barrel on his back and accidentally dropped it down into the courtyard below. He was told he had to go down and retrieve it. Meanwhile Kaz tries to block Magnus to try to give OD some time. Kaz manages to knock the barrel off Magnus' shoulders. It falls down into the same courtyard where OD is still trying to retrieve his barrel. Someone shouts at OD to watch out, and he manages to bring up his arm just in time to stop the barrel hitting him in the face.
      One of the most scarring in-competition moments in strongman.

Also unbeaten in 1day shows in Europe I believe? Bad luck with ankle injuries cost him 4x(93,94,96,98). There were 7 events. They tied in the deadlift. Mariusz was one place ahead of Derek in the power stairs and 2 ahead in the plane pull. Derek was 2 places ahead of Mariusz in the car walk and 1 in each of the Fingal's Fingers and log press. Super tight overall before the Atlas Stones, Derek one point ahead. @Colm Rich Nobody is saying that Mariusz won unfairly, or that it was Mariusz' fault that Derek made a mistake on the Atlas Stones. @greg babik state that Mariusz was stronger and that's what I think is not beyond dispute. Mariusz won because he got more points. That's indisputable. What isn't indisputable is the notion that Mariusz was stronger. Maybe he was. I'm just saying it's not indisputable.

    Great list--definitive. If they changed the event at the last minute in 1990 to screw O.D. Wilson, that is shameful and unforgivable. Poundstone should have won WSM 2008 and would have if it wasn't raining when he did the stones...

    I love Jon Pall Sigmarsson. He's my favorite athlete of all time and one of the biggest inspirations of my life. But anyone who knows the sport knows that OD was the clear winner in the 1990 World's Strongest Man, regardless of what the record books say. You gotta give credit where it's due.

    I started really watching strongman because of Hafthor, back when he entered GoT. I remember the year he last by half a point I think it was. The announcers said that if this kept going, he'd end up the strongest man never to win WSM.
    I am happy it didn't end up like that. I am sad this whole nonsense likely will mean it will now stay with 1 title when I think he could have become one of the greatest of all time, if not the greatest.

    I may shift a few of these around in my head, would definitely put Girard higher up. But Poundstone is definitely the undisputed number one. Another huge tick for him is that he beat Savickas at the 2008 Fortissimus when Zydrunas was dominating the scene. Fortissimus is still the greatest single strongman event ever imo, so brutal. The fact Derek lifted that Louis Cyr natural stone is an insane achievement even now. Neither himself or Zydrunas could do it in 2009.

    Thank you for posting this Loz. It was like a trip in a time machine seeing some of these names. I've been watching WSM almost since the beginning (seen them all now) and this brought back memories.
    I remember O.D. and his interview after the 1990 WSM... to paraphrase "I may not be the fastest man, but I can move anything on the planet". He was humble in that interview, but he knew, like we all did, that there was no man in that competition that was stronger than him that year.
    As for Poundstone, a moment that brings chills is when he was the only guy to lift the Louis Cyr Stone at the 2008 Fortissimus comp to beat Big Z. Find that video on RUclips... talk about inspirational! (EDIT - I found it...ruclips.net/video/WodTx_Cj9q0/видео.html)

    In my opinion, the 3 strongest to never win WSM are: 1. Lalas, 2. Poundstone, 3. Mike Burke. Also maybe Konstantin Janashia. Burke is just naturally very very strong. He has got to be one of the most underrated competitors, he did it not even full-time and still won many events.

    Kind of a sad video, but interesting. And nice to see these great strongmen get shown the respect they deserve. All world level athletes are hugely talented and hard working and too many people don’t respect this enough. I mean can we even compete at national level? Are most of us good enough at anything to say we are among the best in our country or even region?

Like you stated, he only participated in WSM three times and placed second twice as well as third once. He also won Europe's Strongest Man in 1981. If that's not close to winning WSM, I don't know what is?!? :-) I also miss David Ostlund and Jesse Marunde on the list. Unfortunately just like with Mike Jenkins, we never saw the full potential of Jesse Marunde. :-( Thank you for a great list!

    I've been a strongman fan, from Québec, ever since watching Hugo compete at WSM and IFSA super series. Those log press events between him, Svend and Z, which often ended up breaking the WR. The 'donut eating cop' interviews with Svend. And to think 150kg was giant back then. But he was never as good on the road, or with multiple day comps, and his track record of injuries was painful to watch.
