Thank you for uploading and sharing. This is your best video in some time in my opinion. It was fascinating, but tragic to hear about Sergeant John Hogan VC. A local boy from Royton who won the greatest award for valour. Like William Jones VC of Rourkes Drift fame, both ended up in poverty. Not a fitting end for two true British heroes. The irony is; if they were still around today and they found themselves in financial difficulty, they would be able to sell their VCs for about £250,000. Keep the intersting content comming. What sets you apart from many other graveyard channels is your excellent explanatory notes on the deceased that you feature.
Awwww that's such a lovely comment. Thank you. I had no clue that you could get 250k for a VC. However, it mm makes sense, such a brave man. We had 3 VC holders from Oldham all from ww2 I believe xxxx
Sarah, there’s a writer called James Lees Milne. A diarist, he worked for the National Trust before the war. His books are really good. They’re at all National trust properties. His family come from Oldham. They had a big mansion somewhere. Might have been Werneth? I’d have to dig into his books again. Would love to know where they lived and when, must have held land & mills. JLM was friends with the Royals and close to Duchess of Devonshire, staying with them at Chatsworth in the Peak district. Great day out that. He lived in Badminton and had a lovely house on the crescent Bath. His diaries are filled with stories of famous people from back in the day. His wife, Alvilde, was a garden designer. She did Mick Jagger’s chateau in France.
Hi. I know over the years you have expressed interest in the Oldham Lyceum. Well, on Friday, September 6, there is a guided tour of the building from 10 to 11. You have to book in advance. it is part of Oldham's heritage Week.
Nice work on sgt.Hogan--A lot of old-soldiers,-sadly,-ended up like that,-they went through Hell,-in the first war,-and it Stinks that the Gov.couldn't care-less about them--& you don't get a Victoria-Cross,-for sitting on your arse, behind a desk !!-glad they have his medals !!-good job on the graves,-what sort of paper,-do you use,-for your "rubbings"??-also I hear "the Snipe"-has been demolished !!-my old girlfriends Dad used to drink there,-1976--had a few myself there,-on 'Market-day"-(a thousand years ago !!)
I love watching your video’s Sarah, always something new and interesting to learn about Oldhams past, not much in the way of white history here in Australia as its only been colonised about 250 years. But with 50,000 years of Aboriginal history, theres quite a bit of history there but mostly artefacts and cave drawings and stuff. Keep up the good work lass… :)
Hi Sarah, thanks your techniques. I’m new to rubbing and I’ve given a go - works a treat!! You seem so happy and it really comes through on your videos. You must be a riot to work with - what is your day job? Have you got any vacancies?😂
What a sad story of sergeant John Hogan , it’s good to see someone is taking care of his grave . Enjoy watching your videos Sarah 😊
Thank you Sue xxx
Nice looking Cemetery, great video as always Sarah
Thanks so much! Xxx
