    The unveiling of the Ascroft Statue took place on Saturday, June 20 1903. A line of carriages set off from Oldham Town Hall, along with bands, soldiers and hundreds of workmen. At the unveiling Churchill talked about how it had been Ascroft who had first invited him to Oldham, in the smoking room of the House of Commons. In the evening, after the unveiling, there was a grand banquet in the committee room at the Town Hall.

      Hi, that's interesting. Perhaps they got the name correct then, maybe paperwork wise that was the name but locally not. Yes the others facade is still up and is Joe the front of the 6th form college. I think a video to clear this up is warranted xxx 😁

    I think you may have a point about modern buildings. When I go past Hill Stores I always think that the century-old Co-op Building will be around longer than the more recent Tesco nearby. GR on a pillar box means George V - King Charles's granddad. He didn't bother with a number because he thought, with his eldest son called Edward, that there wouldn't be another King George for a while. Edward VII ones are more rare, but there is one in St Michael's Square, Ashton. Loved the trip through Derker. xx

    Those broad arrow marks are indeed OS benchmarks but you are spot on about the water board using them as well. They used to mark where service pipes entered buildings or passed under walls.

  • @leemuir2514
    @leemuir2514 11 дней назад

    The marks on the wall are called bench marks, you can find them on lots of old buildings like banks , town halls etc. Loads of them in oldham. They were used for height elevation records .

    So many beautiful buildings and homes have been destroyed since the 60's in Oldham by successive governments and councils and what they have replaced it with is appalling. I remember as a kid visiting Oldham many times as my parents both were born there and it seemed to be constant demolition for over 20 years. The fact you had to point out a cobbled alley shows how unusual they have become and they used to be literally everywhere. I remember the milkman used to deliver with a horse and cart and now we dont even get milk delivered any more! Another splendid video Sarah, thank you so much for sharing x

    Not being picky, you finished up in Watersheddings and not Waterhead, although, on a 19th-century map, it was called Lower Barrowshaw. Bryan Street used to be a dirt path from the bottom of Longfield Street to Lowermoor Lane, on the right-hand side as you were walking up Bryan my Uncle who was a Carter used to have a pen where he kept his horse and cart. If you had continued up Longfield you would have come to what was the Oldham Rugby League ground and Dog Racing Track. Also, you would have walked past where I was born in 1946.

    Just watched it again Sarah. If I have a favourite vid of yours this is it. You might say you look like an "house end" but you were a beautiful woman then, before then and always will be. Pure Sarah's UK Graveyard magic. xxx👍
