    Loved this. James Yates is my gr. gr. grandfather who was instrumental in getting the library built. He was a strong advocate for education. The library took a while to be built and cost a lot so it was nicknamed Yates Folly. It is a beautiful building. I had never heard the story regarding him being sued by the architect so thanks for that little detail.

    Another great walkabout. If you ever get down south head for Rochester in the Medway towns, it was the home of the writer Charles Dickens and has a lot of other places of interest. I stayed for a weekend and even wanted to get permission to get aboard the old German U-Boat but no luck. Thanks for info and walk.

    Well done Sarah love seeing Alexandra park I lived on Orme st , and used go to to Waterloo infants and Alexandra juniors school ,we used to make dens in the Bush's behind the lion's den ,I remember the park keeper used to chase us away we called him the Parki he was a polish guy ,I can remember when you could hire a rowing boat and go on the launch ,we used to go fishing ,but one day we got caught fishing in the duck pond which was forbidden and the Parki chased us off again

    This is great stuff. It’s like an episode of Time Team combined with one of Ronnie Corbett’s ‘sat in a chair jokes’, the joke is very short and straightforward but he takes half an hour to say it. Great stuff 👍

    Ye I didn't know all this had happened when I worked on top of the library in the 60s,also I used to live on queen's Rd myself, also I worked in chadderton cemetery,on the gardens,and gravedigger,so when you're somewhere you don't know what's gone on there before you arrived....lol...

    Congratulations on your 1k Sarah here's too many more! Thanks for this video I really enjoyed it, I bet the neighbours loved all the scandal in those days. I love finding out about the history of Oldham and its people. When my grandma was alive she used to tell me all about her life she was born in 9001 in Denton Lane Chadderton. Some funny stories too!. Anyway thanks again hun 👏👏💜

    Congratulations on the 1k subscribers Sara. Could you possibly do a series on the black salves that are buried at Chadderton Cemetery?
    I have noticed a few graves at the Chadderton Cemetery with African/Asian sounding surnames dating back to the 18th century. Can you shed some light into this? After all Oldham is multi-cultural and it wouldn't be fair exclude such graves/lives.

    • @SarahsUKGraveyard
      @SarahsUKGraveyard  3 года назад +1

      Hi, of course I'd be happy to look into any oldham history. That's shocking to me that these people could have been subjected to what you say and I can't imagine that's the case but I hasten to add I don't know. I will investigate and report back in a video. Can you advise roughly where I can find them please and I'll start looking this weekend

    • @moses2652
      @moses2652 3 года назад +1

      @@SarahsUKGraveyard I found these foreign sounding surnames along the bottom, as you drive away from the huge cross at the far bottom end of the cemetery. There are not many there (I've only seen 3 or so), you have to really look hard because there are so many graves scattered. I am sure there are more dotted around, it's a huge cemetery as you know.
