    Me and my brother, David, walked for miles and miles over the hills of Rishton, Great Harwood, Clayton le Moors and Blackburn as children, in the long winter of 1963 he was 10 and I was 9, we walked up the delph between Blackburn and Rishton through, in places, must have been 6ft of snow and ice, Icicles in places were 10ft long, we did this for adventure and the only sustenance we had was a couple of jam butties and a bottle of water. we skated on ice, unfortunately I fell in and my brother was so scared he would get into trouble he hung my clothes on a tree in his naivety thinking they would dry. Needless to say I walked home in frozen clothes. Perhaps we were just lucky but I think we can all remember being children and wanting great adventures. So very sad for these lads, thankyou for sharing

      That must have been frightening 😮 As you say, we have all done crazy things that in hindsight were dangerous at the time. And kids will be kids who love to go out on adventures. Also, thank you for watching and commenting, it means a lot to us.

      @@annebeckettmorris577 It was a daily occurance for me going through the ice in Cheshire, we had a constant furness at the wood factory & slap our frozen wet clothes on that, dried in moments, any longer they would set on fire, we even laid our clothes on the road waiting for a car to mangle them but early 70s a car passed about every hour or so 😀

    Myself and my Dad were caught in a blizzard after visiting Darwen Tower, on the way down it began to snow.
    Within minutes it was a complete whiteout so much so that the town wasn't visible and the path down was covered in drifting snow which soon came up to my Dad's waist.
    He had to carry me down on his back as i couldn't feel my legs enough to walk.
    By coincidence he had told me this story about the boys the day before and being only 8 years old I was petrified that the same would happen to us.
    As I'm writing this 62 years later it's obvious we survived although frozen and wet! 🥶
    I should point out that when we set off to the Tower it was a clear fine winter's day and by coincidence on a Sunday.

      It's madness how quickly the weather can change. I think I may have mentioned it further down below, but we saw the storm clouds brewing in the distance and chanced getting the story done. But even by the time we left the carpark, it lashed it down 😅

      Oh wow! Its absolutely crazy just how quick the weather can turn. Over here in the North of England, and especially on the moorland, you can see the storm clouds coming on over from some distance away, and although you think it will take a while for them to reach you, there are upon you in no time.

    We lived in Darwen for about 18 months in the mid-80s and would often walk up to the Tower, starting from the Sunnyhurst pub...but only in summer! We would never dream of doing the trip once the leaves fell and the nights really started to draw in. I always described the view at the top like the moon landing quote: ''Magnificent desolation''!

    What an incredibly sad story. Most, if not all of us have done something our parents or elders have warned us not to do, and as luck would have it, we came out unscathed (and if we're really lucky, a good lesson was instilled). Tragically, for these boys that wasn't the case.
    My grandmother died of hypothermia - she was what we would now classify in the early-mid stages of dementia - she still had some clarity but was stubborn and refused to live in a care facility (across the street from her own home! She could visit if she wished. She was a widower and lived alone, though grandchildren would come and help her every day). One day she just walked out in -25 degree weather with no jacket and, when they found her a couple of days later, she was sitting under a big conifer tree, frozen. It was a small town/rural area in Canada, so there was a lot of territory to cover.
    The doctor said it was a peaceful death, though I'm curious if the medical community still thinks of hypothermia in the same way. I can only imagine the terror these boys felt knowing they were stuck in a massive storm and weren't properly prepared, with no one nearby...

    I've just watched your channel for the first time and I know it won't be the last. You have a new sub! 👍.
    So sad for those poor boys and their family, and everyone who knew them, and that their adventure turned into tragedy 😢. You're spot on about the word Hero being used so easily. Someone who wins a race or scores a goal are Champions.
    Someone who tries, or does save lives ARE Hero's.
    Fascinating channel and look forward to watching more. I'm originally from Lancashire. I used to keep my horse and walk my dogs in Rivington, not too far from Darwen. Yep, nature is wonderful, but she can also be cruel. We need to be on our toes and respect mother nature at all times. I now live not too far from Dartmoor in Devon, and am 5 minutes from a beach. We debated on whether or not to travel over to Darwen this morning as the snow had dropped quite badly overnight where we live. But the roads, to be fair to the council, had stood up well and had been gritted, so they were very much driveable. I really wanted to get over the moors to Old Lyons farm house ruins, the place where the boys were finally discovered, but it was just too snowy.

    Something similar happened to me a few years ago although with a different ending. I went to visit my uncle aunt and cousins on a Christmas Day in Gainesville, GA. My uncle warned me that bad weather was coming but I didn’t listen. We used GPS to try and get to our home in Tennessee. I was reading a magazine and not paying attention. It started snowing heavily. I was with my husband and young daughter. We got stuck in the snow. A couple in a Jeep took my daughter and me in a hotel in the next town. My husband got the car out of the snow easily with the lighter weight in the car. My daughter told me later that she didn’t think she’d ever see her father again. We made our way safely home the next day. I still feel guilty about getting us in that situation. I will always be a good navigator from now on. 😢😢😢😢😢

      We walked along Darwen Moors last year in summer and it was blistering hot. We went to film the story of the polish army officer who tragically lost his life when a plane he was flying crashed onto the moorland. Its a vast, open space, and it is quite easy to see how quickly you could become trapped should the weather turn on you. There is absolutely nowhere to go to take cover and wait it out, and in the boys case, other than a wall, they had nothing to help them.

      William was found face down, hands covering his face but they seemed to be clenched. As for both Ralph and James, they were face up. Poor James was only found because one of his feet was showing through a snowdrift 😔 I can't imagine the fear all three would have felt. Im from Darwen and heard the story of the three young lads who died up there on that harsh day I was over there Saturday morning run and it wasn’t pleasant if you got up to the fingerpost you will find a little sign for the three lads and if you google bull hill hospital what it was but it’s great sad story.

    • @DaysofHorror
      @DaysofHorror  9 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Pete. I think I've seen that sign. Is it on a wooden post of sorts? And it's only a small sign at that if it's the same one 🤔 Yeah, it was the hospital. When I was doing the video, I had asylum in my head but realised when adding that old OS map overlay it was the hospital.

    My younger brother sister and I all under the age of 11:00 walked 2 me to the local store it was beautiful out. Then as soon as we left the store it was a blizzard a snow blizzard like I've never seen before. I walked ahead of him being the bigger one. All I did was looking for one of my feet because there was nowhere else to look and we were chained arm and arm with each other and the only way I knew you were at our street was by landmark. When we got home my mother was terrified it's so grateful to see us. We didn't have a car in 1970 soooo...
    I'm only posting because I think something like that may have happened to these three very young boys and I don't think it was a misadventure on their part.

    Very sad story! I once attended Tom Brown the Trackers Survival school! Tom was trained by an Apache Tracker & Scout. Grandfather Stalking Wolf. Knowledge of how to build a shelter ,even a snow hut, might have saved these boys! Tom has trained US Army Rangers Survival skills !Huddling together in a snow shelter might have saved these three boys! Tom has tracked missing children in wilderness areas for the FBI. He has written many excellent books on survival akills! His book Urban & Suburban Survival Skills is especially a good book to read ,in this day and age!

    Well done on the video. A very sad story. I was surprised to see so much snow in Darwen. We’ve had nothing in Clitheroe! I take it the reason they didn’t make it safely was because they were completely lost just walking in circles? Or had they wandered off track and it had got dark as it would’ve gone dark early that time of year or had one of the boys maybe got ill or exhausted or maybe injured themselves? Or had the snow become too deep to walk through? I suppose we’ll never find that out.

    • @DaysofHorror
      @DaysofHorror  9 месяцев назад +1

      It's a complete mystery and as you say, we will probably never find out what happened. I think the snow may have come down that fast, it made it hard for the boys to navigate the terrain and they possibly made a wrong turn. I guess if visibility was also poor, they could easily get lost high up on those moors.

    We say boys, but most left school at 14 in those days, so the 18 year old would very much have been considered a young man - he would have been left school and working for four years. In fact given it was 1917 I am surprised he was not off fighting as many young men that age were. I wonder if he had some physical and/or mental disability that kept him at home? Perhaps also the reason he was hanging out with younger lads?

    The dads of these boys would have received news of this in their trenches as they fought the last couple of years of the First World War. They'd have wondered whose future they were fighting for. If the boys had survived, they'd have been just about of age to fight in WW2. Those were cruel times.
