Whoopi Golderg Defends Jo Koy After Golden Globes Monologue Backlash

  • Whoopi Goldberg is standing up for Jo Koy after his controversial Golden Globes monologue. The morning show co-host said she didn't watch the comedian's hosting performance on Jan. 7, but she did empathize with him during Monday's episode of "The View" as she understands how difficult hosting an award show can be. "These hosting gigs are brutal. If you don't know the room, if you've not been in these rooms before and you're sort of thrust out there. It's hit or miss," she said. Whoopi then made fun of her own past when it came to hosting, as she formerly hosted the Academy Awards four times. "If you read any of the reviews of some the gigs that I've had where they've just you know, whisked me into the cornfield to die on the vine. I mean, it's not an easy gig," she joked. The EGOT winner's co-host Ana Navarro didn't agree with her, but Sara Haines did get back on track to defend Jo as she "felt bad for him" after his off-script Golden Globes kick off was met with silent reactions.

      It's actually that they're so self-conscious. They're not in the work they are doing because they are full of themselves, exact opposite. They can be other people for their career, and that is a draw, so being called out and joked about to their faces about them and not the characters they play, that's where they have the issues and don't think it's funny, which I totally understand

    I only saw the Taylor joke. It wasn’t a funny joke, but it was completely harmless. The people who cant take a joke and are crying over this are the people who are ruining comedy. Nobody can tell a funny joke anymore because they’ll get cancelled for hurting somebody’s feelings. That’s the same reason why snl hasn’t been funny for the past 10 years. I love Taylor and have been a swiftie for nearly 15 years. Judging by the way swifties have been reacting to this, you’d have thought he said a slur and attacked her. People need to grow up, learn how to take a joke and have a sense of humor, and stop being so fucking sensitive

      Agree; all of them started out as a nobody, and they have forgotten their humble beginnings. Some can't handle their ego as they move into their acting careers. Off the camera, they don't even realize they become pretty high-minded and think they're above anyone. These actors are proud and biased. You can see their facial expressions. I agree with Whoopi Goldberg. Thank You !! Whoopi for standing for Jo Koy; sad to say, many of these actors/actresses are great and successful; however, their characters individually speak clearly of who they have become, in judgement of character they lost a fan ...

    I love Taylor. But I don't understand what's offensive about the joke. I feel bad for the guy. He must have been nervous since he had only 10 days to prepare and only a first timer. That job is a tough one. Still he had the courage to take it. Whoever put him there was also responsible. Jo koy learned from this.

    She wasn't even the butt of the joke so I don't understand why she stared daggers at him. The butt of the joke was the media and their insane coverage of her game attendance. The joke was a jab at the media, not at her. She should be careful because sooner or later, if she morphs into TAYLOR THE ICE QUEEN, she will lose her following.

      True she wasn't the butt of the joke. But putting her as the reason for the difference MADE her the butt of the joke, there were a million ways he could have phrase that to NOT make her the punch line but he didn't.
      Nope she won't. her following has been with her for 17 years. She DID NOT stare daggers she simply didn't react. The same way RYAN GOSLING didn't react to the Barbie joke. They didn't find it amusing. You are allowed to NOT react if you don't like something just like you are allowed to react if you DO.

    Kevin Hart, Howard Stern and Whoopi Goldberg defended Jokoy! For sure it was not an easy room so give the guy a break. I personally think he was not bad at all. Not only that, he did get everyone to talk a lot more about the Golden Globes.

    Jo Koy's jokes were tame compared to Ricky Gervais. And yet people attacked him anyway. Why? The media pundits needed clickbait to drive their viewer numbers. Jo is just one of the many comedians they use as a punchline for that purpose. This is classic Hollywood at work. No longer surprises me.

    Tried watching it again. Well, listening to the monologue without seeing the celebrities' reaction and it was funny. These celebrities are so hard to please. Give this man a break, 1st time hosting and roasting celebrities and was only given 10 days to do was a hard gig.

    If Jo Koy gave zero fcks on stage and wrote the entire script himself, he easily could’ve nailed it. Still did great nonetheless given the amount of prep time. Accepted the gig on a very short notice cos more mainstream comedians wont do it due to the bunch of snubs in the audience.

    I love Jo Koy too. Glenn Close and Robert De Niro rolled with the punches and didn’t take anything too seriously. Loved their reactions, which made things more fun. I’ve seen hosts do a lot harsher/offensive jokes, so Jo really wasn’t standing out to me for an exceptionally bad performance. It was more about the people in the room. Not sure what was going on there. Maybe some people were so concerned about laughing at certain jokes because they’re afraid that they’ll be criticized for doing so in the media or on social media the next day. As for Taylor Swift… 🤷🏻‍♀️ Your guess is as good as mine... It was a relevant joke in my opinion. Maybe she wasn’t paying attention. Wasn’t she texting or something?

      At the minimum, the Golden Globes owes it to Jo to bring him back next year with the normal number of months to prepare as opposed to 10 days. We can then judge his performance after that, good or bad. This year, he's gotten flak for something that wasn't his fault. Comedy writing takes time to tweak and make funny. Needs to be tested out, adjusted, and that process repeats itself before it's ready for bigger audiences

    Seeing Jo Koy's excerpts from the Golden Globes, I laughed out loud. It brought me back to the constant banter that he and Chelsea Handler had on E's Chelsea Lately. I thought besides only having 10 days to prepare, Jo did a great job and deserve's due credit for his efforts.

    His stand ups are awesome! I heard he was given the job 10 days before. Sounds like they can’t find anyone to sit there in that room filled with people who have very little sense of humor and roast them. That’s how it’s always been. The comedian is supposed to roast the audience. You’re millionaire celebrities living your dream, it’s not that big of cost.

    FACTS! The Golden Globes is the winner in this situation with 50% increase by picking JoKoy to host. Everyone is so critical about Jokoy's performance but Jokoy brought his supporters and added viewers to the Golden Globe. Well done Golden Globes and Jokoy. The numbers don't lie. I don't even watch the Golden Globes.

    Just imagining being on that stage with all them celebrities expecting something out of you to make them all smiles is so terrifying. I can see Jo holding it together even whem some jokes didn't work. He was a fighter during that gig not backing down but really kept getting back up and punching up as they said. That's courage right there.

    Loved Jo Koy! Funny, topical, edgy - but respectful and truthful. Not over-the-top abrasive like Gervais (who was spot-on but too truthful for Hollyweird). Excellent host especially for last minute (10 days notice). Hope Jo Koy returns!

    Good for Whoopi! I don't always agree with her, but glad she said this. So glad Access picked on this.
    The critics are always the one sitting on the sidelines calling the shots. While the ones who have empathy are the ones who have actually done the work and know how hard it is.

    Koy's performance was on par with most of the monologues in these shows. I laugh many times, and the Taylor Swift non-offensive joke was hilarious because it's true. I mean, have you seen a Kansas City, Chief game lately? A steady camera shot on her like she's playing the game. Yet, did Tom Brady ever got upset for having a steady cam on him? She shoud've felt flattered by the joke.

    Everything is controversial these days. I can't see what is wrong with Jo Koy's monologue. It was funny and it did the job in a room full of people who are there only to get an award or to be talked about.

    I agree...I really truly thought all of his jokes were funny ! His energy was fun, his jokes were fitting but not mean at all. I think the celebs were stuffy and stuck up...THEIR PROBLEM ! . I laughed with him but not at them. Give the guy a break...he's trying to get laughs !

    Being an awards show host is known as a thankless job and awards show audiences are known for being chilly. Jo's only misstep is allowing that to rattle him like referring to his jokes bombing and even throwing his writers under the bus haha. He could have just made a joke about not having much time to prepare and left it at that or better yet made a joke about their being uptight. At any rate, the main job of a host is to appear unflappable and in control which he unfortunately failed to do. Jo is accustomed to performing in front of adoring audiences therefore seemed out of his comfort zone trying to win over audience. Additionally, he's more of an energy comic rather than being witty in an off the cuff way.
    That being said, the backlash he received from Swifties was totally unjustified because he wasn't even remarking on her milking her relationship for publicity, instead he just made a tame and accurate remark about NFL broadcasts constantly cutting to her. Her reaction was more of a poor reflection on her because it showed she takes herself way too seriously.

    Jo Koy is great, but truth is- he wasn't funny this night. I know Whoopi said "If you don't know the room...," but it doesn't take a genius to figure it out- it's the Golden Globes. You know what type of people are showing up. This isn't a comedy club or a music festival. These are A- list actors and directors. Obviously not gonna be the same crowd you're used to dealing with.

    You know on the bright positive side? The part where Jo Koy was in St. Louis, Missouri, where he did his first stand up gig since hosting the Golden Globes and called out Hollywood and woke society Marshmallows because they are soft, Jo Koy got a massive cheers and standing ovation from the audience and laughing. Another funny but cool moment is when a audience got up and said F***'em (referring to the haters) it was also several news headlines recently

    A lot of celebrities are humorless, spoiled and entitled. People enjoyed seeing Ricky Gervais as a host because he unapologetically called them out. Jo Koy is funny and will recover and hope comedians pass on hosting these shows. Just give them their awards, let them make their boring speeches, enjoy the dresses and call it night. Old Hollywood is gone, their isn't much to enjoy about the current bunch.

    This is why nobody wanted to host that show 🙄 He was the last pick and he acceoted wigh only 10 days to prepare while previous hosts admitted to prpaeong 6 momths prior to the show. The room is full hollywood fakes up high on their golden horses that they don't want to be roasted. Well too bad. That's how it is every year. Let your PR team send the writers what you want the host to say about you then, that way your onion skin won't be hurt.

      Nothing he said was funny though. I watched it. It simply wasn't funny. People aren't offended by his jokes. They are just talking about how unfunny he was. When Ricky Gervais hosted before and he attacked basically everyone in the audience. His jokes were actually funny though. Ya'll have this idea that everyone is offended when in reality some of these comedians just aren't funny. Am I supposed to fake laugh at their crappy jokes?

    Some of Koy's jokes were humorous and they were quite tame, not mean spirited at all. He was getting glares from everybody for such innocuous little jokes. And so few were laughing. I don't get it! There was something very off about this crowd. It wasn't him, imo. This was just plain weird.
    Edit: Okay, perhaps he shouldn't have snapped at them like he did but they were being a rude audience.
