As an American who has gone to Salvi 5 times over 15 years and just got back in May of 2023, there is nothing remotely wrong with Salvi. The people are friendly, it is a beautiful country and I have gone alone 3 times and never encountered any problems at all. The bus she is talking about, I took from Salvi to Guatemala City and back again. There were no problems, it cost $40 one way and I was alone. Don't believe everything you read or hear.

@@TheresaofTheWorld You'll have a blast. I would recommend seeing the sights in the City. Go to the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Nacional Palace is gorgeous. Church of the Rosary is very unique. Then try to get to the beach. I like La Libertad but if you want to hang around a bunch of expats and surfers go to Sunzal. I don't so I avoid it. Go to the mountains Tamanique is pretty cool. If you have time, take the bus I mentioned and travel to Guatemala. That was fun. Avoid the taxis and use Uber. Uber drivers prefer cash so take cash with you. Salvi runs on American dollars so I always take about $300 cash in small bills - $1, $5 and $10 so you can tip and pay for little things. In the city you can obviously use your debit card. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer. I love Salvi. It's a beautiful, safe country and I hope it stays as fresh as it is. If you like ruins, I recommend San Andres. A short trip from the City. Tazumal is also a nice one. They don't compare to some of the great ruins in the world, but they are very cool to see. Also try to get to the Mercado Nacional de Artesinas to buy some knick knacks and Picnic is a gorgeous place to eat up in the hills.

Dear Diana, your video has great information, showing the life and culture of El Salvador. I do want to say that there are still Indigenous people in El Salvador in towns like Izalco, Nahuizalco, Santo Domingo de Guzman and Panchimalco. In 1934, there was a masacre called La Matanza where mostly Indigenous people were killed. The government of that time forbid the language and cultural outfits for many decades; our Indigenous people are still alive in El Salvador. ❤🇸🇻

Congrats on 5k+ you deserve so much more! I'm doing a collective catch-up on your videos; I had visa issues and so much stress the past few months but luckily my visa got prolonged for another year. I went to Frankfurt because my dad was visiting for the book fair from Tbilisi, due to his work and my brother arrived as well. We crashed at a Georgian friend's whom we hadn't seen for a long time but we never ended up going to the Book-fair as this year was super-crowded, with fans cuing up for hours to meet their favorite authors...Despite not going, I ended up filming so much in the 3/4 days we spent there...and my book translation might get published but I shouldn't say hop before the jump. Rambled on, now to your video: 1) I like the way you structured it, with news bits and commentary in the beginning. 2) Nice shot of the priest. 3) your commentary always comes from your heart -> loved the comparison with Georgia. Will you be voting in these important times, even though you don't live in Georgia? The current government needs to go...

I just got back from El Salvador after 12 yrs of not visiting due to the gang violence. I stayed mostly in San Salvador and went to the historic city center late at night on several occasions. I never felt unsafe in my 2 weeks there. I got an opportunity to speak with the ppl there and I heard both sides of the story regarding the safety and security most ppl now feel and the heavy handed approach the govt has taken (Including unjust arrests). While there is no denying this uncomfortable reality I think overall it has, in the short term, been a net positive. Only time will tell if abuse of power gets out of control. Hopefully not. The ppl have suffered for long enough.
On another note, you mentioned you didnt see any of the indigenous population at the beginning of the video. There is a small town I visited not too far from San Salvador called Panchimalco (I think that's how you spell it). It was established by the indigenous population that were fleeing Spanish rule. Its surrounded by mountains and is nestled in the valley below near "devils door" cool place to check out. We got some traditional hand made fabrics that were made by the towns cooperative.
I'm glad your experience was as pleasant as mine

Great video! Hope you felt welcome in El Salvador. Just 3 points where I differ with views expressed in your video. First, whoever told you not to go to San Salvador has not been to San Salvador in a long time. It is a very safe and green city. Maybe they just wanted you to avoid traffic. Traffic is horrendous. Secondly, I live here in El Salvador and I can testify that you don’t have to worry about wearing the numbers “13” or “18” anymore ESPECIALLY if you’re a tourist. I go to soccer games and watch kids wear it on their backs, something that used to be taboo. It used to be dangerous because of the gang association, but we are free now! And lastly, you stated that most people don’t trust the government here. This really surprised me. Statistics (internationally recognized polling organizations like Gallup) have consistently shown that 90% of Salvadorans do trust the current President and government so there is a disconnect here with what you experienced. It may be that you mostly spoke to the people in the opposing minority who don’t like how El Salvador is advancing. As far as the arrest of gang members, I’m sure there are innocent people imprisoned but I’ve had friends and acquaintances who have been released from jail after investigations showed their innocence. No country is exempt from this sad reality not the US, not Georgia and certainly not El Salvador. What’s great is that the vast majority now feel free to visit family members and friends in what used to be rival gang territory. People go out at all hours of the day, ride public transportation without fear, delivery guys go into what used to be red zones, kids are not being recruited into gangs while in school, homes aren’t being taken over by criminals and people are really optimistic about the future. I loved the moment towards the end when you got emotional. It shows a genuine feeling of solidarity and empathy. Thank you for your visit and hope you come back soon!

I feel it's important to share my perspective as someone who has lived in El Salvador my entire life, particularly as a post-war individual with no direct experience of that era. The issue of gangs has always been present, but I must admit, I have personally never found myself in a situation where I felt threatened or scared by anyone less by a gang member. It's crucial to note that gang activities were concentrated in specific areas, not widespread across the entire country as often perceived from foreigners and even Salvadorans who left the country during the war time. This isn't to deny the existence of these groups, but to clarify that their presence isn't as ubiquitous as commonly believed. Indeed, their influence was significant, especially since they operated in densely populated regions.
On a personal note, I have never ventured beyond the main streets of these areas for obvious reasons, and have always felt safe. While some might consider my experience, and that of my family and friends, as fortunate or atypical, it does offer a different perspective on life in El Salvador amidst the concerns about gang activity.
The current president's radical approach to addressing gang violence has had mixed reactions. People living in areas directly affected by gangs were understandably relieved. However, this approach has raised concerns due to the extent of incarcerating individuals without concrete proof of their involvement with gangs. Many argue that there was no alternative, yet I believe that a more measured approach, involving thorough investigations, would have led to the incarceration of those truly responsible. This method might have been potentially more effective in the long-term stability and justice within our communities.
In response to your comment about "people now being able to have a normal life," I believe this perspective doesn't fully encapsulate the reality. Speaking from my own experience and that of those around me, I've always had what I would consider a normal life. This includes growing up in a regular family, living in a typical house, attending school, pursuing higher education at a university, and now holding a regular job.

Hello thank you visiting my country and make all of those good remarks. Just let me give my point of view as Salvadoran about what you say of people not liking the government well I don't know where you get that idea might be from foreign press? If you ask every person if they like Nayib Bukele you will be surprise and he is the government so don't let a few propaganda pro- gangs out there confuse you. Ask what the people feel, please the people don't listen Soros propaganda againts the people of my country.

Normal people is not afraid of the police! If You are not doing something wrong You don't need to be afraid. The situation was complicated, everybody used to know where the gangs were, everybody usted to know that the problem was that the police didn't want to do the job, Thats why all the "human rights" speech has not relevance or resonance in the population, and the support of the goberment (at least in security policy) is more than 80% or Even 90% of the population

The truth is I live here in North America, Canada and I’m going to tell you something I been to some cities in the USA that are scary, unsafe as soon you get away from the main streets you are in another world. So I think El Salvador it’s going in the right direction and NO the government is democratically elected. It’s not perfect, but far better than what use to be. I’m going there in eastern it’s the best time to go.

2:52 Regarding this moment, my apologies in the name of El Salvador, that guy is definitely against the government, nothing wrong with that, but if they say they are against Bitcoin, they still should be nice with foreigners. Most of Salvadorans don't use Bitcoin, but they will explain to you patiently why they don't use it.
