I actually like the All NBA and awards rule changes. The league is increasingly more position-less and there needs to be incentive for players to play games. Awards are often incentives and bonuses in contracts so it might behoove some players to suit up. That being said, I think you'll start to see some players speaking out when it's the organization trying to hold them out of games....Something that isn't talked about enough.

Silver has said that this tournament idea comes from European football. Many of those tournaments get their juice from including lower level teams, which the NBA will not do. Silver should be looking at European football as inspiration for instituting promotion and relegation. I know it would take a miracle to get all sides to agree on such a massive change, but hear me out ...
Silver can split the NBA into two divisions each team would play the other 14 teams 3 times home and 3 times away to make a perfectly balanced 84 game schedule. Promotion and relegation between the two divisions (if arranged carefully) would eliminate tanking, make every game matter to the point that load management would be a trivial issue, and allow an easy path to expansion. Increasing both divisions to 20 teams could easily raise billions for the league without damaging the value of the product

If you can get 20 quality minutes where they can still be effective, I call it a win, also In terms of the fans that do come to a game to see a star player and they don’t play, that can all be negated if you know you’re gonna see them play for at least 20 good minutes

In europe we have the équivalent of the mid season cup for football/soccer. Yes often the favorite team end up winning it but it sometimes allow medium team get a trophy and it's usually well received even tough it is considered less prestigious.
The difference however is that in football there's no mechanism in place to shuffle the levels of the team like in the US (big stay big, small stay small). so for some team the mid season tournament is probably the only title thry could ever get and so it makes it more valuable

If you wanna see how a mid season tournament would go and how the normal favourites might not win, look at cup competitions in the English premier League, the big teams typically play a weaker side in the tournaments to focus on the main trophies . It means developing players on teams with superstars will get more game time and smaller teams can have something to look forward to.

    • @Falcon4224
      @Falcon4224 10 месяцев назад +66

The big difference is that the cup matches in the EPL *don't affect the regular season*. Cup matches are cup matches, period, they don't affect the League. That doesn't seem to be the case here. So EPL teams at the top of the league table will rest their star players in cup matches, because the cup matches don't bring as much money as the League. Mid and lower table teams will play harder for the Cup so they can bring some extra cash.
With this, the tournament games still affect the regular season standings, so there's no reason for the better teams to rest their star players.

I never really cared about All NBA, to me, being an All Star selection is what acknowledge your season success AND you get to display your skills in a star studded game. 3. I think the reason for the new tournament is to keep the regular season more interesting, look at this year. Heat got in the playin, and became the 2nd 8th seed to make the finals. Lakers also went to the Conference Finals as a 7th seed. It just gives more meaning to play during the regular season.

It might be your opinion that All-Star is more important than All-NBA, but i promise you, throughout the community, NBA, shoot even the world, All-NBA is considered the more important and prestigious award by far. All-NBA is voted on by journalists, coaches, players, etc. the All-Star game is literally a fan vote and doesn’t mean much legacy wise to anyone anymore.

@@B4nkShoTziNcYeah all-NBA is significantly more important, and it’s a full season accolade not a midseason one like all-star. Lots of players in the NBA and MLB have great first half’s then fade, but for that season they’re an all star no matter how bad they fell off afterward. All-NBA means so much more.

@@B4nkShoTziNc I respect what you're saying, but the All Stars voting format has been changed since 7 years ago. Its now 50% fans, 25% media and 25% players. It's just much more special to wear an unique uniform and display your skills in front of the world. Besides, you can still have unfair votes for All NBA due to favouritism. I know they are changing the rules next year, but in the past players like last season for example, Jokic got snubbed from the All NBA First Team.

Ive been around football (soccer) for years too so an in-season tournament sounds really cool. In the English football system for example you have the FA Cup and League cup and top teams still try and compete for these. It can be succesful if the players and teams embrace it. You can get some brilliant cup rivalries built up and also you get lower ranked teams sometimes making a shock win - i think it can add more intrigue into the nba

the difference is that in-season tournaments for soccer feature teams that you don't typically see. Also, it's another proxy for a championship since soccer leagues typically don't have a championship tourney. The NBA playoffs are a championship tourney so an in-season tournament featuring the same NBA teams will have difficulty building any prestige since there is a bigger prize featuring the exact same teams (i.e. the championship). The in-season tournament would need to include the G-league or foreign teams to really make it interesting.

As a European, I gotta say in-season tournaments are a blast! Three action-packed days with knockout rounds, featuring the best teams battling it out for the title. Live attendance is a blast, with fans from different teams coming together in the same city for a weekend basketball party. However, the NBA missed the mark this time, especially with the format. These tournaments are highly regarded here, but in the US... well, they didn't exist before, so building that respect might be a challenge. And speaking of games, teams like Real Madrid, Baskonia, or Barcelona don't skip the cup to focus on other competitions, even with a schedule that can easily exceed 100 games per season (National League, Euroleague, and the Cup). Respect is the key to success for this tournament, and I'd love to see it work in the NBA. But how?

This tournament could be really good for the game. I've always found it cool that in pro soccer, they have tournaments throughout the season. It offers more chances for all the teams to win something and there is more games to pay attention to. However, this only works because those tournaments have a lot of history to them and the players and organization genially cares about winning them. If players take this tournament seriously, it might actually become something that fans look forward too and care about. Personally I wish they did it March Madness style to allow for more upsets and chaos but if they're worried about teams complaining about extra games that won't happen.

With the FA cup and Caraboa Cup it’s included in the season and allows all teams across the English football pyramid to have a shot at reaching the final or the latter stages for money. It also allows for a fairytale storyline along the way. Might be a good thing for the NBA. Also brings in more mid season management for bigger teams who are going for the Chip to have to manage to get to that final.

Imagine having increased odds in the lotery or having a different salary cap than the rest of the league for winning, or even maybe being able to do 1 trade even after trade deadline with whatever team you want, or having homecort advantage despite being a lowe seed, something crazy man, not money. Ya the bye is too much, but automatic homecourt is a dope incentive, so is increased lottery odds. I think making it conditional (i.e. if make the playoffs, then homecourt; if miss the playoffs, lottery odds) would incentivize all teams to compete. Plus the added dynamic of low-seeded teams gameplanning ahead of time to face their conference matchups and not tanking so hard that they have no shot while giving fringe teams the opportunity to land a franchise piece. All very very tantalizing.

If you look at the football perspective, in this tournament season (Cup) usually the football teams play the players of the "2nd squad" or academy players of the club.
Then back to the NBA perspective, this tournament is used by teams in the NBA can make this tournament a place to play their two-ways and rookie players to play other than the Summer League, can also be a coach evaluation so that their two-way player or rookie may get minutes in the regular season or even playoffs

It's not really all that similar though? The main draw of competitions like the FA cup is the fact that teams from lower divisions get a unique chance to play against teams from the Prem, sometimes even causing exciting upsets (although those don't really happen all that often anymore). For the NBA, it would only be similar if it was a cup involving the g-league as well, for example. If the FA cup was a mid season cup involving JUST premier league teams, no one would give a fuck, UNLESS it awarded champions league/europa league spots.

The mid season tournament looks similar to how football(soccer) does it. But the difference is those trophies do have a prestige and history so fans care about them. So it will def take time for fans to get used to it. And for the question of how will smaller teams have a chance if they dont already have a chance in the regular season, well in football since there are multiple mid season tournaments, teams have a tier of squad for each tournaments depending on the prestige of the trophy because they wanna rest their player and divide playing minutes. So you could see a really good team field a b tier squad for a game but a smaller team that wont normally have a chance against them will have their normal line up. So now they have a good chance of beating them. And in football there have been really cool stories of even lower league teams having a dream run because of how the system is laid out.

My take on the in-season tournament: it happens pretty much everywhere else in the world. In most places, it has a long and prestigious history. fans and teams definitely do care about it. For the smaller teams, it's a great opportunity to run for something other than the championship, and even teams from lower leagues play on them so a great Cinderella story is always a possibility. For the elite teams, it's another stamp of their power. Also, because of the single-elimination nature of it, every game is very high stakes, and sometimes it feels more intense than a championship final series game. In some places, it even used as a qualifier for international tournaments, raising the stakes even higher. All in all, super fun and intense to watch, and i hope the NBA will know to take these factors from it. The problem is, the NBA being the no relegation, no international, no soul league it is kinda limiting some of these factors.

I love the play-in and I think the mid-season tourney will at least be a change of pace. It'll be nice to track teams progress and see just how much $500k can motivate players.

I would love to see more focus on developing young players and giving them opportunities to grow in the NBA. There is such a wide pool of talent in the world, and the more we can do to help young players develop and showcase their talents, the better the game will be.

See I don't think stars or even young guys will play in these games. I think fans will get robbed of good basketball in this mid-season tournament because starters on contending teams aren't going to play out of fear of injury. Even teams that seem more play-in bound might not want to play their best players bc why hurt their chances of sneaking into the playoffs(like the heat did this year).

I'd like to see the play in have a guarantee of a top 5 draft slot or something and wild cards be the teams with the 2 highest draft picks the year before that don't qualify on merit. Make it more about young teams being put on display

I swear this man makes some of the best videos on RUclips. Every single video has kept my interest from start to finish, even tho I gave up on the NBA a few years ago. Too many "super teams", the unchecked ego's and the ridiculous amount of money these young men make enrages me. It's the same with all sports, music, TV/movie stars, etc... The most important thing in my life are my kids and not 1 of the thousands and thousands of those people has ever done a damn thing for my kids!!! So why do they deserve all the money, the fame or the respect they get? Because they play a game at the highest level? This world need some major changes now or the world we leave to our children will be terrible. Sorry but it's just my opinion and my opinion doesn't matter at all.

Would be amazing to see the nba add in relegation, where bottom three teams move down to the g-league and the top three teams in g-league move up to the nba. Could help with teams tanking for picks and give the guys who are grinding in the g-league a chance to move up. Finally, also gets the owners more incentive to be invested in their teams.

    • @crucisnh
      @crucisnh 10 месяцев назад

I doubt that this would ever happen. The owners would oppose it on economic grounds. A great many of the teams probably have large mortgages on their buildings and being dumped down to the G league would severely hurt their bottom lines and ability to pay off those mortgages. Long term it might also hurt the ability of teams to get mortgages for new buildings as banks might see the relegation as destabilizing.

a way to fix tanking could be to make the tournament between all the teams that missed the playoffs and playing losers and the winner gets the first pick of the next draft, the second gets the second pick so on and so forth and maybe give them a secure spot for the playoffs or paying the next season

Mid Season Tournament should be an All-Star Weekend event. Guard - Wing - Big line-ups and play threes to 21 full court. Winner donates 500k to a charity of the winning teams choosing. Lots of people have been calling for a 1v1 tournament in asw for awhile now.

Hey jim, since summer league is here, could you make a video on which teams in the past had the worst summer league record but had a winning record in the regular season let alone went deep in the playoffs? And vice versa.
    Thnx bruh.

I always thought it would be cool to instead of the lottery, have tournament style games which you farther you advanced the higher your draft pick would be.

soccer makes it work with multiple leagues and tournaments crossing over through the seasons. As basketball go more and more global this makes sense to me to kick off now and will make it easier to have "nations" and "champions league" tournaments across the game as a whole.

i think the in season tournament could spark more rivalries and competition between teams and players, the one thing the nba is missing is rivalries

The mid-season tournament sounds a little like the FA Cup or Carabou Cup in English Football. The difference is that the lower tiered teams also play in the tournament and have a chance (albeit slim) to win. Think of a tournament with G-League teams thrown in the mix.

I think the mid-season tournament, could be great, if teams are invited from Europe to compete in a knockout round.

For the in season tournament I see it as a U.S Open Cup (Soccer) or FA Cup, where teams don't necessarily use their best players and allow younger players to lead the team. As they advance more star players will participate and make the finals a bit more exciting. I would like for them to maybe have it like the FA Cup where the G-League and NBA teams compete where there's a chance a G-League team pulls an upset on an NBA team's 2nd string players.

Really dumb idea to add G League teams. The tournament games also count toward regular seasons records

I'm with the in-season tournament, it doesn't look like it impacts the season in a negative way since it's built into the schedule, it's just gonna make games earlier in the season more important for the viewer. Plus just cause a team is projected to be in the mix at the end of the year it doesn't mean they will have it together early in the season coming off the offseason so I think it'll give other teams that haven't made the playoffs in forever something to play for that could possibly give them some playoff-type experience.
