Unfortunately for a particular NBA team in Houston, that didn't go so well for them in a certain Game 7 some five years ago...
7 for 44.......1 for fucking 21 in the second half. 16% efficiency...I'm still pissed off about that...9 points away from facing a Kyrie-less Cavaliers that got swept by the Warriors for the chip.
Troy St. set that record but they were also the fastest paced team in college history. They took 191 shots in that game. Another team that no one talks about was Arizona St. in the mid-90s. In an era where 15-20 threes was a ton, they took 30-40.

Not really. This sort of system breaks down when you have elite athletes who are well coached and there are huge disparities in talent level among players. If you’re gonna hock threes like this in the NBA you’re not cracking 33% and you’re giving up layups that are probably cracking 70% plus plenty of free throws. When I was a kid, I would think “why don’t teams just hire all the best 3pointers, have them only train half/full court shots, and then pick up a few Rodman types. Just rotate, the Rodman’s in, after you score, and the 3pointers in when you have the ball.” Think about all the time guys spend running, and drilling other stuff? Why? When you can just get 3 snipers. It’s hilariously awesome to see teams going for this more and more.

Im surprised you didn’t mention DeVry University vs Troy State in 1992. Final score of 258-141 (officially). That 200-point game isn’t even in the same universe as the actual record.
During the pandemic isolation, i was writing out algorithms for game theory in different sports. The winning formula for basketball is (Points/Time) with the shot clock being 24 seconds and there being 3 primary outcomes (miss, 2pt, 3pt) the objective is set clear. Shooting a 2 pointer with 16 seconds left is as impactful upon the outcome of the game as a 3 pointer with 8 seconds left.
My brother went to Grinnell a long time ago, but they've been doing things like this even back then. They used to hang signs up around the school to promote games. "Most schools think 100 to 70 is a good game. We call that a good half."
The real question is why the other team was consistently in the paint on defense. Everybody couldn't just guard the 3 point line? The spot up 3 is literally the easiest thing to guard in basketball.
@@darthsilversith667 it’s pretty wild and pathetic that you have nothing better in life to do then reply to people trying to be tough 😂 it’s okay little guy you don’t have to take it out on people on the internet.
Grinnell is not only an anomaly in basketball, in the state of Iowa, or even really the country. The school is kinda like this in all aspects. Pretty sure they have the largest endowment besides like Harvard and it's in the middle of NOWHERE in Iowa. There's all sorts of crazy stats about graduation rates, attendance, and most notably post graduation success is nutso.
An Iowan myself, I live 20 minutes away from a baseball field that lies in the middle of a cornfield that MLB teams have been coming to play at these last few years. If you ever have a drive for something unique, go watch one of those games at the Field of Dreams. It's a very special experience.
My high school team ran a system that mimicked grinell we were NOWHERE near the level of their team but it was a fun ass offense. The defensive schemes were also hella fun to run
138 points and 108 shots attempted by just one player (Jack Taylor) alone is definitely crazier and more absurd than the Grinnell College 3 point record for sure for sure in my opinion.
I just realised the differences between D Rose and Ja are bigger than we think. Ja Morant has an explosive jump upwards, this is great for rebounding, dunking, blocking and aspects like that whereas D Rose has an explosive first step and is more of a snappy speedy player. This makes him harder to defend. Don’t get me started on whose handles are better. D Rose clears Morant. The refs a decade ago were so much stricter. At that time the league was slightly putting a blind eye to player’s signature moves, similar to what the league did with iverson’s crossover. Morant can run a marathon whilst palming the ball and not get called for a carry, double dribble or travel. This is why D Rose clear Morant more than we think. We see them to be similar even tho they have, in a way, completely different games. I don’t want to start a war so just think about it I have commented this on another video cause I want this to be.a hot take
I agree with you. In 1993, I got into basketball because of seeing Michael Jordan do spectacular layups then I saw Drazen Petrovic play and shoot a lot of 3 pointers then I became obsessed with 3 pointers.
It feels like the system is set up to find and develop the next GOAT shooter. Its not a system that works with anyone, but if someone like the next Curry turns up into the system, they will be the most hyped player before joining the league. Efficient and extreme volume shooting, whoever cracks it will probably beat the all time scoring record next.
@@truthiscensored Nah, he was just the designated scorer. Grinnell, when they decide to bust a record, picks a single player (usually their leading scorer for the year or a senior) to go ahead and do it. He got to chuck 70 threes by himself, pretty much, against a bible college the AD scheduled to fill their non-conference slate so they really couldn't do anything about it. Also, he snapped his arm damn near in half a couple games later, hence why he never came up in the news again. He put up 100 the next year, but nobody cares when you put up 109 the second time on 50% shooting. Taylor could have played in a tier 2 league overseas, but he walked away from the game to focus on raising his daughter and his faith. he kinda just vanished, but dude was always p religious and i guess he wanted a better platform to talk about religion and stuff than basketball.
People don't realize how much Grinnell has influenced the game. Now maybe not directly, but a lot of coaches seen what they were doing and were intrigued and started taking bigger risks because of Grinnell. Also, if you're a high school coach and your team isn't that talented and can't compete you might want to look into running the system until you get the talent level up. It's a fun way to play and it's way better for the moral of the team/community to lose by ton but scoring a lot than it is to lose by a ton and scoring barely anything.
Idk vs any competent team if you dont make 2s alongside 3 you are not even gonna make 5% of 3s. The only reason a 3 is hard to block is because you have to be careful the attacker doesnt pass through you for a layup. Otherwise good luck making a 3 when your defender is 1 cm away from your chin.
@@wassup4532 have you ever coached or played for or against someone running the system? It's not easy to adjust to. And no offense but Grinnell is doing fine against "competent" teams year in and year out.
@@wassup4532 Grinnell does take 2s, they just didn't in the 111 3-pointer game to go for the record. The System emphasizes 3s, yes, but they do also take 2s when the opportunity presents itself
@@bibbyboi no I dont and for a reason. Ive seen 'only 3s' players that get shut down insanely fast once the defense realize he cant do a layup. Also college basket d3 isnt even a good league, you get lots of bad teams that they get rolled over
@@eter8212 when i watched then i would say the first shot, and fast breaks even from inbound where the special recipe from grinnel (lot of hail mary passes and often just 3-4 defender in the own half). The opposing teams especially with short rotation, where running a lot especially if the attack with 5 dudes and while the ball handler was under pressure you doesnt get time to rest. Intresting approach, grinnel implemented it probadly a bit to extreme but they are doing ok in there league and the records probadly helps in recruiting.
I watched some of there games, while Jack Taylor made the 100pts games. Arsenault is a record chaser, so the we throw just 3pts is intended but not the usual way. For the scoring records he forfeited his sub scheme, and let taylor be in the opposite half ... They played also somekind of a 2-2-1 Zone in the game (one at the opposing 3 pt line two at the logo and two at the own basket). When possesion changed it was often a hail mary, which they forced quite often from the opposition. The strength of the system was usually the strength of the depth chart, with the pace opposing team with small rotation get exhausted with the constant ball pressure and the constant sprinting from a to b. In germany there was a team which played a light variance of this style at quite a high level Rattelsdorf, lots of chaos and it wasnt desastrous (cause they know the game plan the opposing teams not). Even Göttingen with John patrick hat some of this ideas implemented in the first league, which was called Guard Terror with a super small deep lineup, constant pressing and running every fast break. They did good for there budget.
In high school we took a trip from Kansas to go watch them play because we were going to try this system. We all got really good at shooting even me as the big man was able to knock down 3s but if you don’t have a deep bench and very good conditioning it’s a hard system to run. We lost quite a bit and it was hard on our high school bodies, the constant on the court then off took a massive toll on my knees and I was in constant pain but it was a fun system.
I envy you for having played that system. When I was in HS (95-99), I had a coach who was the complete opposite of the Grinnell system. Micromanaging the number of breaths and steps we took on offense and defense.

When I was a kid, I would think “why don’t teams just hire all the best 3pointers, have them only train half/full court shots, and then pick up a few Rodman types. Just rotate, the Rodman’s in, after you score, and the 3pointers in when you have the ball.”
Think about all the time guys spend running, and drilling other stuff?
Why? When you can just get 3 snipers.
It’s hilariously awesome to see teams going for this more and more.
Always a good day when Jimmy posts
Your videos are so entertaining and well edited. Even a feat like this which is entertaining on paper is elevated by your 13 min video presentation. I honestly thought the video was shorter because of how engrossed I was.
i’m from grinnel iowa and we watched jack taylor drop 109 points in a game
yooo I'm from Grinnell too, saw the 138 game

I've learned that when Jimmy shows a chart or graph you need to be prepared for the big reveal as the camera pans up to some insane statistic or record. Great video as usual.
Crazy how Jximmy can still find new and interesting/exciting content in a dead basketball time period that’s creative and unique. Respect and admiration sir.
I am a new bb fan. Thank you CC22!!! This 64 year old , gray haired old woman loves, loves, loves your informative content
. Keep up the phenomenal videos.
Im surprised you didn’t mention DeVry University vs Troy State in 1992. Final score of 258-141 (officially). That 200-point game isn’t even in the same universe as the actual record.
I genuinely want to interview the Jack Taylor who scored 138 points in one single game.. That's just absurd.
In Grinnell's system it would shooting a three-pointer with 16 seconds left in a 24-second shot clock.
I played on an aau team with number 10, adam. His shot has always been so pure but its been so cool to see how INSANE of a shooter he is today
For things like this it's so surprising when some NBA analysts gives more importance to College basketball vs some league overseas...
Grinnel is a beast omg. The dedication, the sheer comittment.
Just wanted to let you know, I love every single one of your videos Mr High-roller. Thank you sir!

6:39 the huge amount of offensive rebounds definitely helps 42 offensive rebounds means selling out completely on transition defense
I’m not gonna lie, this video had me laughing so hard. Jxmy with another banger. Keep up the hard work brother

It’s crazy that i know all the guys on the team. Very great guys and very happy that i got to meet all of them throughout the years.

Every time I watch this channel, it’s a masterpiece. Please keep pumping out quality content, we love it!
This is one of the best videos you have ever made keep it up👍👍👍
Great Video! You have good sense of humor mixed with a deep understanding of basketball🤙
My friend: *chucks up a bunch of threes*
also my friend after he misses most of them: “DAMN MAN CURRY RUINED THE GAME😡”
😂😂
No, it's because it's boring as hell to watch. What you wanna see, dunks and power blocks inside or nerds shooting 3's?

Nerds shooting threes has its attractions.
Grinnell is not only an anomaly in basketball, in the state of Iowa, or even really the country. The school is kinda like this in all aspects. Pretty sure they have the largest endowment besides like Harvard and it's in the middle of NOWHERE in Iowa. There's all sorts of crazy stats about graduation rates, attendance, and most notably post graduation success is nutso.
not the largest, but definitely up there in endowment per student
but yes, a very highly ranked liberal arts college for where we are
I watched this video at least 30 times. I fell in love with the Grinnell System.
Whenever Jimmy uploads i feel like a kid on Xmas morning
bro so original

JxmyHighroller never disappoints! Great video again!
Glad they’re a team in Iowa. We finally have something unique.
Keep up the good work Jimmy👍
Jimmy's selection of eclectic classical music in these videos is 🔥🔥🔥
I hope David Arsenault III will carry the legacy of that system when David Jr retires as a coach.
3:44 the 2027 rockets was an electric team, I can’t believe they didn’t win a title
138 points and 108 shots attempted by just one player (Jack Taylor) alone is definitely crazier and more absurd than the Grinnell College 3 point record for sure for sure in my opinion.
What makes these videos so wonderful (besides the music) is the foreshadowing and delayed information.
I don’t want to start a war so just think about it
I have commented this on another video cause I want this to be.a hot take
Gosh...Jxmmy blessed us with another masterpiece...
Jxmy ALWAYS coming in clutch when I just made myself some food 🙏

You are the definition of ''quality content'' Jimmy
Imagine being on the bench and standing up for every three
Jimmy you's the man bruh!
ever since my first time playing I thought BB is all about the 3 pts shot. all the other are not for me. love to see these types of feats!
I agree with you. In 1993, I got into basketball because of seeing Michael Jordan do spectacular layups then I saw Drazen Petrovic play and shoot a lot of 3 pointers then I became obsessed with 3 pointers.
Jimmy never dissapoints with his uploads. Jimmy never dissapoints with his uploads.
Pretty cool to see the 2027 rockets on the chart
Grinnell:"Can you shoot threes?"
Me:"Yes."
Grinnell:"Give this man a scholarship right now!"
Such quality videos the instrumentals in the back ground are always on point 🤟🏽
Jack Taylor dead scored 137 points in that system and never was heard of after.
Probably cherry picking like Lamelo did in High school for 92 points
It was 138 and he scored 109 once the following year. I think he averaged 51/game.
"Phillips...three..."
"OH MY GOD IS THAT A LAYUP HOLY COW!!!"
1:26 that man came while he was on air, that's what true love for basketball sounds like😂
I am now a fan of Grinell College's men basketball team.
Friendly reminder Grinnell was in the same conference as KU at one point.
Great video brother!! The 2027 Rockets were a phenomenal team!! 🤣
crazy u spoke about this, this has been my myteam play style n its efficient from chewing the clock to even stops.
I would say Steph is hypnotizing these guys but they’ve been doing it since the 90’s 😂
Nah back then they were all paint mid range today nothing but three and because they saw a light skin brother coming on a rise.
When Jimmy uploads it’s a good day
In high school we took a trip from Kansas to go watch them play because we were going to try this system.
