This is why I love the chest press machine. I've just got the basic one at my gym, but you can have it stretch back so far and it feels fantastic and then you just... let go and it's fine. The stretch under load concept has helped me a ton with slow eccentrics.

Picked up a bar exactly like this from Titan Jan 15. $200. Chrome. Have been using this as a primary movement in a double progression at 30% Incline since. I knew it would hit my chest but I am still hitting Triceps and Shoulders hard. It is all stretched. :) Pulled back scapula high chest for sure makes a difference letting the bar sink in. Getting the form down took a couple of sessions. I plan on focusing on this for a while before I bring back the straight bar and Dumbbells. Indeed I can see the real benefit here even over DBs as Mike explains. Best of both worlds.

It looks like the bar sold by Ader Fitness.
It's OK, not great. Shape is perfect. The knurl is good, not great (and I'm not a guy who obsesses about knurl). It could use some cuts for hand spacing. Most importantly, it rusts easier than any bar I have ever owned. I think it arrived with rust on it. 3 in 1 oil is your friend.
That said, I don't think that there are many options out there if you are insisting on this shape.Wish Rogue or Rep would make something like this instead of the curved ones or the crazy contraptions.

I always thought where I hold the bar determined how much stretch I got, but I got a Kabuki strength kadillac bar which is cambered as well. I just used the handles in the medium position but I let the bar almost touch my chest on each rep. It was one of the first time in a long time I felt a little sore in my pecs the next day, and this was with much less weight than what I can do with a straight bar. From then on, I worried less about whats the most weight I can lift and focused on how much of a stretch I can get. I'm not a powerlifter, so really I shouldn't even care about how much weight I can bench press.

But what is your opinion about this exercice when it comes to shoulder health ? Do you think the extra stretch would be beneficial for « bullteproofing » your shoulders as it would make it stronger and more flexibe, or do you think this would likely put your shoulders in a potentially higher risk of injury than regular bench press ?

The lack of this kind of bar is the exact reason i prefer dumbbells and not only for stretching but for inner chest activation and squeeze at the top and also wrist angle. Yes im not able to lift 150kg for sets but im ok doing 55kg per hand for 12 reps with good form . I am 178cm , 85kg. Still long way to be able to lift them for 20 reps lol .. and then if i achieve it i can always decrease the rest between sets or number of sets or use the 65kg ones. They are the biggest ones where i train :S Anyway i dont really need to lift 200kg on a bar to grow my chest so i take dumbbells any day over a barbell. Some day my joints and tendons will be thankful that havent gone to the super strength route.

You can also do push-ups with your hands on blocks or chairs and get that same deeper range of motion. And of course DBs also alow you to go deeper than a straight barbell. But when first trying the chambered bar I would use a bit lighter weight than you would use on a straight bar and do some good warm sets first starting with just the bar. Cause your really stretching those chest muscles under load. And be especially carefull if you have shoulder problems.

i use a old pressmachine with a pad behind my back for extra reach, not only because there is no camberd bar, but also because less and less people spot correctly, .......i see kids behind there buddy, just waiting till he fails, than laughing before hoisting the weight of his chest dayly........maybe the importance of spotting suportively sould be explained in a video????

I was watching some of your older training stuff like three hours ago because what else would I do with my free time, and I was thinking, "I should get one of these camber bars. I'm just not sure if it will be worth jt." And then you posted this. Here I thought you were joking when you said you have cameras all around the country to watch people.

Anyone know what brand of bar this is? I've seen some with less than 3 inch cambered drop and ones that say 7 inch drop.

Hi would a neutral grip cambered bar do the same and straight bar at recruiting musculature?

Anyone know where I can get that black cambered bar for my home gym?

    • @ILruffian

Ader Fitness, $265. That appears to be the one Dr. Mike is using. Pretty sure it is the only black bar with chrome sleeves with that shape. I've had it for years. Shape is perfect. Build quality is average at best. Knurling is OK, not great (and I'm not a knurl snob). No hand spacing cuts. Most importantly, the coating is shit. Most rust-prone bar I've ever owned. 3 in 1 oil is your friend.

Coming from the future to say this is an awesome bar. If you need a shorter one for space reasons, Exponent Edge makes a 6' cambered barbell that they market as a rackable curl bar. Love the crap out of mine.

So does this only apply to hypertrophy or does it also apply to strength?
    Excuse my ignorance.

They're pretty heavily correlated. A big muscle is a strong muscle.
