  • Spring has arrived and many of the annual spawning runs have kicked off. Hickory shad have started running up the tidal tributaries to their spawning grounds and I decided to try and catch my first one. In this video I am fishing at Mason Springs on Mattawoman Creek. The shad just started moving in, so it took me a while to find them. After searching the creek, I finally found what I was looking for. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe to the channel!

I think a steady retrieve will increase your odds for solid hookups on shad. Cast quartering downstream and slowly reel in.

That was neat how you were on them in the current. I like to use small kast master spoons with a single number 6 j hook in the more slack areas. Keep it up!

Nice video. I fished at this spot twice over the past week. First trip was shortly after you filmed this, and I caught two dozen hickories. Other trip was yesterday and I caught zero. Cold weather shut them down. That first fish you caught was a spottail shiner - I caught several of them on my shad darts. Aggressive little minnows.

Great video. I used to fish the same spot back when I was in college in the early 90’s. Use to catch herring, yellow perch and shad. The yellows were running when their was stilk ice in the creek. Also interestingly, one time i found a pile of Dead Lampreys on the shore line. Did not known what the heck they were and how they got there and back in the day did not have cell phone cameras either. So I took one and showed it to our Biology professor in college. He Id’ed it. Still a mystery how the heck they got there.

I recently bought a 14 ft jon boat with a new 9.9 hp mercury do you think I could safely use it in areas like Taylor’s island or fishing bay for duck hunting
