I'm a Sailor and was stationed on the USS Guam LPH-9 (Iwo Jima Class) also a Plank Owner (Decomissioning Crew) and when I saw this I am just amazed at the dedication of the build. That LHD is awesome and so much detail, I am just in awe. I liked seeing all of the aircraft and would have liked to have seen some CH-46's but seeing the CIWS mounts is awesome. If they open another round for Plank Owners I would love to be a part of it.
Wow!!! What a project!! With Lego coming to Richmond Virginia with a very large manufacturing facility this would be a project that you would think they would love to showcase when that grand opening happens a few years down the road. We in Virginia love the Navy and the Marines and what better way to showcase that than a mega Lego project like this.
Former sailor here. Love what you guys have done! Knew some people that were on the Makin. A few things: First that green camo uniform is what we call guac-oflage because it looks like guacamole. That uniform used to be exclusive to special forces and people attached to them (like intel spooks, tech/gadget guys, mechanics, etc). Apparently since I got out that uniform has now replaced the Navy Working Uniform or the NWU, that blue camo pattern which I thought looked more Navy than that green pole pattern, but we gotta be more like the ground pounders, I guess. However, unless things have changed that dramatically since I've been out, sailors wear blue coveralls while out to sea. The camo uniform is a shoreside only thing. Second, that RHIB (or Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) you said the SEALs use is also the typical launch boat for most surface vessels. While they have "inflatable" in the name, they are constantly in the same shape. They're actually pretty hard rubber and contain large pockets of air within them to give extra buoyancy while transporting people. I got to ride ours a few times for different reasons. It's like a speedboat, and the guy driving is usually kinda nuts. Iirc, the SEALs use a different version from the rest of us, but it's the same kind of craft. Third, it looks amazing! Can't wait to see it completed!
I finally realized why the WASP has so much appeal to every military geek: it is basically a GI Joe mother-ship carrier, full of soldiers, tanks, jeeps and cool aircraft on the deck = )
That is Awesome I had Lego when I was younger mum would buy Lego for my Christmas present and i would sit down and play with it all Christmas day until lunchtime when family would come over
My son is a Navy Corpsman currently aboard the Makin Island with the 13th MEU. The "purple guys" are called "Grapes". They handle fuel for the aircraft.
Really cool design! I was in the Marines from 2013- 2017 and my first deployment with 2/1 was with the 13th MEU and the Makin Island was the Big deck of the group. I was on the USS San Diego but our sister section was on that ship. Super cool to see it in Lego form!
Amazing to see this build coming along! So glad I got to contribute to this incredible creation & become a Brickmania Plank Owner. It’s awesome seeing all of the aircraft on the deck now. I think its super cool that most of these aircraft on the ship were current or past kits! Having the Plank Owner minifigure & the Osprey makes me feel like I have a special connection to this creation along with a tiny slice of it on my shelf at home!
Wow 😲😲 that's well impressive used to be my favourite toy when I was a boy LEGO but it was nothing like today with all these fancy model's was only plain bricks squares and nothing else
LOL about the Ospreys rattling the windows. Years ago a few flew past my house in VA and rattled the heck out of mine as well. A couple of years after that the windows started rattling and I thought the Ospreys were back. Nope, the whole house started swaying as well. Minor earthquake.
I dont know much about the navy, or the marines. But I do know that this is an amazing looking build, and the helicopter they show at 2:00 is the one that the survivors of Left 4 Dead 2 escape in at the end of The Parish. Stay legendary!
The Navy SEAL boat is called a RHIB, but technically so is the harbor patrol craft. RHIB means Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat, and I believe there are actually about twenty types.
Amazing job! So just wondering what made you all choose the makin island as your choice to build off of? Really curious on that. I am one of the plank owners of that ship. Did my first 5 years in the navy on her and pre commissioned her! Sailed her around South America from Pascagoula, MS. Great job! Also are the flight deck crews available to purchase?

I could be wrong, but I believe these aren't official lego sets, these are custom made sets. They make their own models that aren't official lego models, just using the lego bricks and all.
