MIL, or Military Power, is 100% throttle but without afterburners. Basically when you hit the carrier deck you want to jam the throttle to 100% because if you miss a wire, you want to be at full power to take off at the other end of the deck.

Pro tip for landing on a carrier - use your throttle for altitude and your stick for speed, feels unnatural but it's about mainting your angle of attack. The reason you stalled out on the first attempt is because you used your stick and yanked back on it to try gain altitude but you instead killed all of your speed

    • @zhaohan_dong

17:10 sorry late to the party. but if you are on speed with your f18, DONT use your elevator anymore! what you want to do is to trim your aircraft for on speed, and then you control your elevation just with your power lever. pull it -> nose goes down, push it -> nose goes up. using joystick for elevator in this moment would mess up your AoA! the hornet is designed to get trimmed into a certain AoA and then it will hold it, as long as you dont push/pull your joystick. i think thats pretty much the secret here.
oh yeah … just as a side note … never ever flare when landing on a boat! just smash it down.

When you land with those jets you have to kind of invert the controls. The stick is used to go left/right and fast/slow, while the throttle is used to go up and down.
The idea is to set your plane up for that the AoA indicator (the 2 arrows and the circle) shows the circle. You do that with the trim (up/down). When it is there, don't move your stick forward/backwards again.
The mirror (displayed on top) in there to tell your altitude relative to the glide path, the trajectory you need to have to touch at the right spot on the deck.
If you need to go up, increase thrust ; if you need to go down, decrease thrust. There is no sweet spot, you will be constantly adjusting the thrust.
On the contrary, be very gentle with the stick. You'll mainly lightly adjusting left/right. If you need to adjust AoA, do it with the trim but don't chase it. Leave the plane be, it is designed to stabilize itself. Put it in the good AoA (the circle) with the trim and you're good.
Lastly, you see just under the carrier deck a light. It gives you your alignment to the landing strip.
You don't hit the deck in the same direction of the boat but roughly 9-10 degrees left.
That light is telling you what to do :
Red flashing - you are far left,
Red solid - you are a little left,
Orange - you are good on center,
Green solid - you are little bit right,
Flashing green - you are far right.
The quicker it flashes, the further you are from the centerline of the landing strip (and NOT the direction of the boat)
And of course, as soon as you hit the deck you go full burner in case you miss the wires (which is called "bolter") or the wire snaps.
Don't eyeball the deck, always look at your AoA, the mirror and the alignment light ... you cross check everything until touchdown, especially the mirror. Touchdown has to happen almost as a surprise and you keep full thrust until the plane is no longer going forward.

  • @almightyIrie
    @almightyIrie 2 года назад

As somebody who flies virtual Hornets for more than a decade by now (currently in a sim called DCS World / Digital Combat Simulator World) i have to say this is really painful to watch... To elaborate on what others said: try using throttle for altitude corrections and stick for speed corrections, but arguably you can get away with not using the stick at all except for lateral corrections.. What you really do in the (Super)Hornet is you trim for on-speed AoA, once that is achieved you alter your descent rate with the throttle only and don't have to worry about the AoA (slow/fast) thing anymore as it's already solved by trimming the airplane correctly.

For carrier landings you should not touch the stick for pitch. To land, you set the onspeed AoA at 140kn and 8.4° (yellow mark). To go higher, you throttle up. To go lower, you throttle down. But you never pitch with the stick, you just roll. I'm just saying this because I saw you pitch a lot and you were waaaay too slow. Once you have set up your jet, you look at the ball and listen to the LSO and they'll guide you to a perfect 3-wire.

You need to have more power, just in case you miss the wire, so you are able to gain altitude quickly

You’ve been catching wire 1, catch wire 3 for the best score. I’d like to see you try again!

You have to aim for the 3rd wire as well... 1st wire is considered a miss :) And your glideslope was pretty bad. Its easier to do if you think of your throttle as the way you control altitude and the pitch of the plane as the way you control speed.

By first wire it’s talking about the last possible wire you can hit in case of a bad landing you can take back off immediately and that’s why you reset to mil even though you should be resetting to full throttle to get off the carrier

MIL power means to set the throttle to full power, but without afterburner. This is done as soon as you touch down on carriers in the event of a bolter (go around) or a cable break, so that the engines are at full power by the end of the ramp. Great flying otherwise.

Tip: It’s differently much easier to fly/land in the cockpit (1st Person view).

Right at touch down, you put full throttle in case you don't hook. But as soon as you are hooked and decelerated, you remove the power entirely.

I also came here after watching top gun 2 😂
I wish I had the chance to fly once a plane (preferably a jet😂) and maybe Tom Cruise sitting behind me 😁
Well, at least dreaming is for free

I got an A when I realized that it´s easier to control the VS and glide slope with the throttle and not so much with the elevator. Good lucky

MIL is full military power 100% throttle no after burners, it is done in case you bolter so you have speed and power to go around.

MIL is “full military power” - that’s full dry, max throttle *without* afterburner.

hey Trev, I love your vids so much, absolute incredible job. I just wanted to say that if you really enjoyed flying the hornet in msfs, you must try DCS. Its very overwhelming at first just as it is so realistic but if you wish I can teach you everything I know. I have a feeling that you will find it very entertaining. Keep up the amazing work. give coop and koda big hugs:)

For advice, you wanna catch wire 3, 3 wire are the best for safety and overall pilot comfort. With that also being said make sure you watch that ball, u get low right before hitting the wires. Good job though, better off than how I started lmaoo :)
