- In this video, I give a tutorial on how to set up the Retroflag GPi Case 2 with a Raspberry Pi CM4.
This video installs the hardware to the case, installs RecalBox to the SD card, and installs safe shutdown scripts.
Future videos will review the unit and set up emulation.
Video is for educational purposes only.

Congrats on 500.
Great job!
Thanks so much!
Subbing as I'm awaiting for a GPi Case 2 and a CM4 to arrive, so looking at your instructions ahead of time :) (And it'll be with the dock)
Thanks great tutorial I did have an issues with inserting the cm4 properly. In the end after looking up online I had to removed the 5 screws in the back and take off the back cover to seat the cm4 module in properly after that was good to go.
I did see a few vids where people had to do that. I don't think Retroflag designed the case with the need to take it apart but it is kind of a tight fit in there. Glad you're up and running with your GPi Case.
Great tutorial! Thanks man🤘
Thanks for making a tutorial.
Just got my GPi Case 2 and it came with a CM4 lite with wifi already installed. worked great initially but once I connected it to wifi it promted me to update recalbox.
After that it would try to boot but the splash screen for Recalbox would show up then get overrun with more script text and not load anything.
Chose this to make a new image on a 128gb sd card instead of the 32gb that was included.
your guide has def been helpful. -Thanks
Thanks so much. Glad everything worked out.
@@TeamRetrogue I had a slight issue with the safe shutdown script. Managed to follow another video (in spanish lol) and used putty to ssh into it and paste it in. Back up and running now.
What happened with the safe shutdown?
@@TeamRetrogue think it wasn't entering properly. I'd type it in and it wouldn't execute. Thought it was a wifi issue... Instead of continuing to type it out I connected using putty and tried pasting it in and still didn't work... But then I tried pasting again and it was good to go.
I have a question. Why's my roms folder won't show up on share root on the computer? I didn't even see N64, Dreamcast, or PS1 on recalbox. I'm really frustrated. I tried everything. I don't know what am I missing.
Update 2024:
I just installed the GPI Case 2
I had problems (SD card not detected ...) - the problem was that the cm400 was only inserted at the top. I had to open the case and really insert it good on both sides
Also: if you flash the latest recalbox (9.x) just start it. No patch needed!
Thanks for the great video, it inspired me to do it too.
it works really well, unfortunately I still haven't figured out how to reset after starting a game?
Maybe you have a tip?
Hello, thanks for the guide. However I am having problems with recalbox 8.0.2 version. The hdmi out on dock is not displaying anything. Just the message on tv the HDMI 720p signal detected. I tried with retropie rom and the hdmi display is fine. I guess its the recalbox 8.0.2 version issue as I tried flashing 2 times and got same result. Another issue is the cm4 (32gb emmc version) is getting very hot over 70 deg celsius. Even putting the large heatsink with screws doesnt solve the issue. Did you face the same issue? I see you were testing on recalbox 8.0 version and things look fine. Any suggestions would be a great help as I don't want to switch to retropie as transferring roms on recalbox partition is much easier. Cannot find recalbox 8.0 version online.
i checked and the scripts are for recalbox 8.0 and doesnot work well on recalbox 8.0.2
Can you please upload the image for recalbox 8.0 for pi4 on google drive dropbox or something and share the link as I cannot find the old version anywhere? Thank!
Perfect!!! 🙂
Trying to set this up on a linux system... most of the steps mirror here, but for the GPi patch I had to go on to my Win VM to install the .bat file... annoying that a pi os doesn't have a linux script file as well when you are literally installing and using a linux system, but have to do the install from windows...
I have one with wifi you need to install recall box first then the patches for safe shutdown do you not shut down the system till all the patches are done?
Yes Recalbox first then patches.
Ahoy hoy!
Question: I also have an CM4 module without Wifi. I bought the USB-C Hub with Ethernet. Exactly the model you linked in the description. How can I make the internet connection work? Plug in and starting did not work for me. Did you configure anything? I will not get this project working without internet in the device...
I had to connect the hub to power to get it to work. You’ll know you’re getting internet when the lights on the hub start lighting up.
@@TeamRetrogue Thanks a lot!!! With electricity it works. 🥳
@@IvilJohn do you have a link to the usb c to Ethernet adapter or will any do the job?
8.0.2 is now out and now working with the patch. Can you please provide a downloads for the 8.0 image?
If you use Raspberry Pi imager like I did, you should get the current image. You can probably find older images on the Recalbox website, but I am currently running 8.0.2 on my GPi case 2 and it’s running fine. I had to reinstall the safe shutdown and GPi case scripts after updating.
@@TeamRetrogue interesting, using the 8.0 patch they provide? I followed your directions exactly and can not get any graphics / the initial set up screen. 😢 I know the cm4 is correctly installed because I can feel the heat of the chip. Thank you for the reply!
@@dotmatrix1840 I have similar issues with 8.0.2.. the pacthes are installed correctly, however getting a blank screen over hdmi. Also the cm4 is heating a lot even with heatsink. Cannot play for more than 15 minutes. Did you have any luck with any of the images?
Where is the link for the usb to Ethernet adapter.
Sorry about that. I put it in the description.
Can you do this fairly simply with the SD card on a apple laptop
I think there’s a program that works on Mac for writing to SD cards but I’m not sure what it is.
@@TeamRetrogue thank you
followed all the SD setup instruction but the Case just sits with a black screen. Anyone else encounter and solve this problem?
Same here, even though it worked without any problems on my first installation months ago. Happens only with Recalbox. RetroPie still works.
I had the same problem. Do not install the Patch. The Patch is for Recalbox v8. But you will install automatically the newer v9 version
So with this setup you can’t use the dock???
Sure you can. I just needed something with an Ethernet port. If you have a CM4 with Wi-Fi you can use the dock.
@@TeamRetrogue my setup is just like yours. Since my cm4 doesn’t have wifi, I hadn’t figured how to install the safe shutdown or use the dock. Thanks for this. I’ll be setting mine up soon.
My pleasure. Once you get past the safe shutdown hurdle you should be good to go.
well this one didnt last long, apparently the CM4 from raspberry pi is no longer available, at least not in official raspberry pi vendors here, only business's can purchase them now, not available for private purchase ??? i'm kinda in shock but i'm definitely sad.
can you play android games?
Not on this device no.
Do not install the patch ,run it without the patch , version 8.1 of recal box does not work well with the 8.0 patch, install like the video but skip that step and it will work ,no blank screen
Thank you, very helpful, this worked for me.
Thank you so much! Worked for me as well!
