I just followed this tutorial step by step with a new shell, buttons, IPS 3.0 screen, and the battery pack. For anyone that is contemplating it, do it and just follow Tito’s guide exactly. Shipping will cost you nearly as much as his coupon code but overall it’s slightly cheaper. Now, I will say that shipping can take forever but overall but for $120, you can turn your old gameboy into a console of now. There is absolutely no need to solder, as mentioned in the video and the whole thing took me about 25 minutes start to finish even though I’ve never modded anything before. This video is the perfect guide.
Hey man, one year later did it ever run into problems? I fully intend to follow this tutorial, I just wanted to see If the consoles lifespan shortens by updating it this much.
5:13 might be a good idea to pre-solder those wires to the flex cable before you install it, else you are potentially applying a lot of heat to the back of the new screen
That intro sequence with the GBA spinning into frame was so well done. The editing and production quality of your videos is always so well done. As a person that works on videos and editing I just wanted to point out that it is very appreciated on how much work you put into these videos.
The fact that you can get all the features with no soldering makes this kit very attractive, especially if your a fledgling modder with no soldering skills
Honestly when he said the Price, I was thinking it was going to be $120 some dollars, but $75 altogether is fantastic for a great screen with no soldering!
As someone who's just getting into electronics I love that this kit is basically solder free and if you do want to solder it doesn't look that complicated
After watching dozens of your videos, I've finally pulled the trigger on a kit! So excited for this next little project. This kit has so many cool features. Appreciate the discount, Tito!
Just bought a full kit from FunnyPlaying. That includes their burnmaster, with which I can finally transfer my original Pokémon saves onto my EZ Flash Omega DE. Can't wait to play my GBA games in the dark while I fall asleep like a kid again.
I installed this mod about 2 months ago and I really like it. As it was my first mod ever, I actually skipped soldering those wires because it was too scary. That's why I was shocked to see you could open the OSD menu without those, because mine can't do that. My touch sensor only controls the brightness. Guess that's a feature exclusive to newer revisions.
I have just installed it. You can call the OSD menu by long pressing the touch sensor. After that, you can navigate de menu by combining long and short pressing. When you have finished, just let it fade by not pressing anything. Hope it helps ^^
As a content creator you have an opportunity to teach people best practices along with your tutorial. In this video you tin and solder the flex cable while it's against the back plate of the LCD. This is an easy way to cause permanent damage to your screen. Depending on the iron temp, you'll see 3 nice little heat spots on the LCD for the rest of its life.
I've never owned a GBA but man back in the early 2000's seeing those rich kids playing Pokemon on it looked like something from out of this world. Great video, Tito 👍
I remember putting an AGS-101 screen in mine back in 2017 and it took some work to install as well as significant shell modification. It's amazing how good these new screens are and how simple the installation is particularly with the custom shells.
something that im amazed in how subtly but steadily has improved is the look of Scanline filters, which is funny because Portable consoles never had Scanlines due to using LCDs (the one exceptions being Sega's Nomad & Game Gear) also I'm glad more Retro enthusiasts are realizing is that the true CRT Retro look comes from actually using Anti-aliasing & Frame Blending
Portable handhelds had pixel griding which isn't much different from scanlines in terms of visual appearance. You can see each pixel easy in the grid for a GB/C/A generally. GBA games do look good with CRT filters though. They also help amazingly well on emulators since, well, let's be honest, almost no device has a 3:2 screen.
Actually the frame blending is very niche. Activating it cuts the smoothness of movements and adds micro jitters. Turning it off results in a way smoother image in motion. So I actually like it being removed because it looks better without it 99% of the time
I had been on the fence about which way to go in terms of upgrading my GBA, but this convinced me to get this screen and a new shell. Thanks for the great video!
These are getting better and better and the screen results are amazing. Next “improvement” would be a drop in screen that would allow us to reuse original shell without modding it. I prefer the look and feel of the original shell & keep the GBA original as possible. Just my opinion
Doesn't this screen look a lot "worse" than its previous ips lcd screen though?? Look at the first 15 seconds of the video, he shows the previous one in the middle and it looks far better than this one dont you think?
@@Autunite AGS screens are "laminated" from the factory. the screen is adhered to the back of the lens, and the lens is mounted to the inside of the shell. this means the screen doesn't have to fit through the hole the lens sits in on an AGS, so it can be any size as long as it all fits in the shell. on an AGB, the screen would normally mount to the inside of the shell, but the lens is stuck to the "outside" of the shell (it's recessed down into a little lip to make it sit flush with the front of the console though) this means if you want a laminated screen, the screen itself has to be smaller than the hole under the lens. even the stock screen is slightly bigger than that hole, because the edges of the stock screen stick to the edges of that hole. so to have a laminated screen that requires no shell modification, the screen has to be smaller than the stock screen. the GBC has the same issue. it's easier to visualize if you're looking at a shell with no screen in it. just imagine putting on the lens with a screen glued to it, and you'll realize the screen HAS to fit inside the opening directly under the lens.

Just did this! Awesome kit! Don’t be intimidated by it guys. I thought I was absolutely terrible at soldering for like 8 years, turns out my soldering iron was just absolutely terrible and was trash. I got a new one and some flux (flux makes a WORLD of difference when aiming for small little conductivity/solder points) and I did this in 2 tries! (My L Button was looping so I had to open it back up and redo it) Even beyond the above mentioned stuff, YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO SOLDER. Just make sure you tape down that bottom touch control flap on the back of the screen.

Thank you for showing this off. will order it soon, got a 40pin GBA motherboard sitting in my draw, the fact they sell the whole kit is sweet as, since i lost some of the buttons
Very nice kit. However there are few cons for me. It is not integer scaled and instead of highlight mode I rather want an undersaturated mode to mimic the original color scheme of the GameBoy. But this kit is still great! I think I will grab it. 😊
Nice, I already have the ITA version, so I don’t need this one, but I definitely can’t wait for you to do a video on the ITA SP kit with FunnyPlaying’s new shells and maybe with the Button LED kit.
I've been thinking about getting a gba for the missus only the other day, and this would be the perfect set up for her, rechargeable battery, purple case, and a beautiful ips display. The price I don't think is that bad given what you're getting, so I'm going to get them for her Edit: I went ahead and got the parts, and the screen is just phenomenal, but the USB-c battery mod from funnyplaying leaves a lot to be desired imo, the fit of the charging circuit is very poor within the shell, and I had to put a piece of foam between the battery and the circuit in order to prevent the contacts from losing connection if pressure was put on the battery cover, which also didn't fit very well with the battery mod installed, and the battery wires were also too short to route properly, my only issue with the ips mod is that the flex didn't line up with the connector on the gba board properly, it's about 1.5mm off from lining up correctly which made it awkward to connect. now I've got it done it works well, but it needs some changes to fix the gripes I have. The completed system though looks amazing and our lass absolutely loves it, so the effort was definitely worth it

And I think we are almost getting into a Ship of Theseus situation where we are barely talking about a GBA anymore hahah
I was just about to pull the trigger on a GBA setup, this new kit pushed me over the line . Was not looking forward to soldering (mostly just having to buy those too), so this kits a big plus for me.
This is mankind's greatest achievement The GBA was a perfect console and nothing since has even threatened to touch the same level; the only thing it needed was a backlit screen and this is the perfect implementation of it. 10/10 finally a mod worth doing
Tip: you can buy & use deferent colours of wire, & even packs of mixed colours, to easily keep track of what each wire is. I’ve actually done this on several mods & it makes identifying each wire super easy.
@@nicholsliwilson Well the good news is that I apparently already bought 30awg wire that I have with my supplies. But the wire that they send with these kits seems to be even thinner than what I have. The spools I have are silicone wire so I'm wondering if there's a different type of coating that would come even thinner.
Wouldn't another Con be if you scratched your screen you'll have to replace the whole IPS laminated kit rather than just popping a new screen on? Love the video, considering doing this soon!
Tito, It Just looks AWESOME i loved the foil stickers on back, they was a great choice also the laminated panel loos amazing on camera and has a lot of options for a gameboy adv. As Always, Like from Spain!!
I know it's not related to the video, but it amused me nonetheless. I actually just completed that hanging area you had playing in the Metroid: Zero Mission demonstration at the beginning of the video.
Awesome review! As always, love your coverage and shots of everything. Very professional. As for one of the small cons, that artificial scan line option should really have included the grid at least, though. But the frame blending and laminated lens is huge. I may seek out a junker GBA and do one of these or maybe a GBA Consolizer kit.
The touch sensor is next level and I love it. I don't know if I'd want to give up my Gold Pokemon GBA, but if I can find a good priced GBA and use that board I'd be all over this mod
These kits really are getting better. The scanline filter looks good though a pixel grid one would be more authentic to the GB/GBA. Next feature should be color correction (not desaturation) to see the originally intended colors from the non-sRGB color space used in the original screens. Lastly, it would be nice for new mods to get rid of the buzz in the audio, especially when using headphones. That would make these consoles perfect.
Just did it today! Thanks for the great video. Bought a supposedly V5 on Aliexpress with a cute Yellow shell. I'm glad I did the soldering because the touch buttons are not working very well. They're hard to find and very finnicky. Bah! I'm content calling the OSD menu by holding Select+L+R, it's more consistent. I'm very happy overall, the screen looks great, the shell is looking good, and I'm receiving the rechargeable battery very soon. I have to say the hardest part BY FAR was putting back the console together lol. There was always something I had forgotten, so I had to take the screws off again, etc etc. The shoulder buttons are annoying, as well as the three soldered cables moving around. I hope I don't have to take it off again xD
Hope the modding scene for the 2ds/3ds comes soon. Would be amazing to see what a 3ds could look like with aftermarket parts, and being able to retrofit a refreshed legit battery with USB-C would be fucking amazing
Been on the fence with this website and their GBA screens. Watched this video and just ordered the screen and housing. I got an Ali express screen last year and it wasn’t what I expected. Seeing that this can be done without any soldering is fascinating. Went with the clear red housing paired with clear dark blue buttons and the glow in the dark contact pads. I was debating the usb c rechargeable battery mod but using rechargeable AAs is fine with me.
I still prefer the IPS V2 when it comes to overall visual quality. The features and the laminated lens are great though. The naming is a bit silly too. Everyone will think this is some sort of "V3" when the 3.0 is just the size.
Wow a screen, shell, and rechargeable battery + no soldering required this is a dream come true for someone like me to bad I don't have a gba now if only this were for gbc instead then I'd be golden lol

I was just about to pull the trigger on a GBA setup, this new kit pushed me over the line . Was not looking forward to soldering (mostly just having to buy those too), so this kits a big plus for me.
It looks great! And I love that all the features are solder-less.
I love the title of the video
This is mankind's greatest achievement
The GBA was a perfect console and nothing since has even threatened to touch the same level; the only thing it needed was a backlit screen and this is the perfect implementation of it.
10/10 finally a mod worth doing
🤠 always good to learn about all these upgrades 👍
This is just God-blessed work!!
FunnyPlay did nailed it all!
For me, the definitive way to play the original Game Boy Advance!
doing requiered soldering which is working afterwards is much more satisfying in my opinion :)
Another solid vid Tito! You convinced me to take the plunge. Ordered and used your code! Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you!
I just finished mine using pretty much only this as a guide. Thanks and awesome job with the video!
Tip: you can buy & use deferent colours of wire, & even packs of mixed colours, to easily keep track of what each wire is. I’ve actually done this on several mods & it makes identifying each wire super easy.
What specific search terms should I use for wire that's that thin (I'm assuming posting a product link link in the replies would get auto deleted)?
@@Ragnorok64 “30AWG Wire” will do the job, it’s what I use.
@@nicholsliwilson Well the good news is that I apparently already bought 30awg wire that I have with my supplies. But the wire that they send with these kits seems to be even thinner than what I have. The spools I have are silicone wire so I'm wondering if there's a different type of coating that would come even thinner.
SOLD OUT!! Hope they get more in stock soon! ***UPDATE*** ALL COLORS ARE IN STOCK! ...I didn't select a color, Sorry for any confusion.
Did they sell out of all they colors? You can check using the drop down on their website
@@MachoNachoProductions It's all good now. Thanks for the awesome video Mr.Nacho.
Take a shot everytime he says "Fantastic" 😂
Great mod tho 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I already bought this and have done this project myself. So easy and solder free. The cost was pretty low as well.
Just put mine together and worked great! Thank you for the help!
Soldering is such an art
Honestly, $75 is a steal for a brand new case and a beautiful, modern backlit IPS.
That's one of the coolest intros I've ever watched.
Thank you so so much! By following your instructions; I was able to do this mod with minimal problems. You're the best!!!!
Man. Purple and yellow. My two favorite colors
Amazing👍 i fitted a ips screen to mine few years ago, ended up selling it. Im going to get another one now definitely. cheers
No complaints. Very professional. Keep up the great work Tito! I wonder what a stereo gba mod would be like. another speaker in the opposite corner.
This mod/kit would be cool with a color matched charge dock. One of my friends would love the color scheme you chose, Wario !
Next step up is to make an OLED screen for it
Been on the fence with this website and their GBA screens.
Nacho made a Lakers GBA lol gotta love it
Just: Thank you for sharing the news ! Keep up the good work.
I still prefer the IPS V2 when it comes to overall visual quality. The features and the laminated lens are great though. The naming is a bit silly too. Everyone will think this is some sort of "V3" when the 3.0 is just the size.
What a beautiful color way that GBA.
Wow a screen, shell, and rechargeable battery + no soldering required this is a dream come true for someone like me to bad I don't have a gba now if only this were for gbc instead then I'd be golden lol
