The reason the battery has to be charged when the device is off is because the GBC lacks the circuitry required to cut off the battery while charging, it would discharge the battery while it's being charged and the effects could range from ruining the motherboard to the battery exploding.
Yeah, although if you use a LiPo and an Adafruit PowerBoost series, or similar quality charge board, you can charge and play at the same time. The PowerBoost has charge protection, a power regulator for stable output and can handle charging while playing
Why not a redesign of the circuit to stop the battery from draining whilst charging.. as in have a set of batteries that would allow maybe an hour of play whilst the rest of the batteries could be charged??
15:40 White light is een perfect mixture of the three colors red, blue and green. Blue has a higher intensity so if all led's are the same size the blue could very well be overpowering the other colors creating the blue instead of white.
If you're reusing the stock membranes, they are a light blue. For an LED mod you really need to get clear membranes for the full effect, but new membranes take a few months of regular use to break in.

My issue with these modern enhancements is that I'm one of those sticklers who prefers the way in which a CRT or LCD screen would blur the pixels creating a softer image. I know a lot of people really want crisp pixels, but it just feels wrong to me. I recently modded my GBA SP with an IPS screen, and that was the first thing I noticed. I wish there were some way to enable a filter to slightly soften the image. Still, that's a slick-looking Gameboy Color! Nicely done and hats off to you for putting in all that work to trim and solder everything.
That's why I prefer connecting my NES and SNES via RF over Component out and part of why I prefer a backlight mod over a sharp screen on my GameBoy pocket. NES graphics just look lifeless and bland without the RF noise. I feel like many games (most notably SMB) relied on noise to give texture to the backgrounds or they were simply not able to fill the screen with textures. The SNES has more textures, but it still looks fine through the RF, definitely better than a cheap converter. GameBoy graphics also look quite untextured in a perfectly crisp, high-res image, and I feel like the pixel grid makes the image look more defined on that console. For all other consoles that werw released later, I prefer a sharp, flawless and noise free image though. I've never been a fan of CRTs, I can't stand CRT whine and it's a mistery to me how it didn't make my ears bleed as a child, but it did make me very uncomfortable nowadays.
I was looking at the battery indicator for a while before you mentioned it thinking it was a dead spot in the screen. Could be done better by implementing it into the color pass through for the logo. Just change the whole color or even have a bar graph that changes the letter colors. Better than taking a portion of your play screen.

You should try using a cnc for cutting jobs like enlarging the screen hole. It might be difficult at first to get access, and it's not something people can normally repeat at home, but: 1. You can show how much better the result can be this way; and 2. People will see it's easy and will start looking around for access to cnc themselves at hacker spaces etc. And this way the skillset will become more and more popular and more people will find themselves able to do even more amazing looking mods that look factory made.
Was expecting some sort of GBC version of the Super Gameboy but this was still cool. If I had steadier hands I would totally try making one of these myself.
What an inspiring video. I found my old GBC and watching this has definitely convinced me to try this mod. A few questions: what kind of solder do you use and at what temp? Also does the RGB LED kit show the low battery warning regardless of power source? I’m thinking of installing the USBC battery kit from Retro Game Repair Shop.

It still needs BLUETOOTH!!! Someone did it a long time ago, there was a video. Chiptune dayz for those that know... know. It was a DMG. It kept shutting down randomly. It definitely worked if it didnt shut down, and he explained why it would cut off in the video. It was clear and had lights too.
That's a LOT of mod 🤯🤯🤯. One mod that I very like it's the HDMI output. It's something I loved with handheld and I'm sad than we don't have that's on DS and 3DS, 2 handheld who don't have consolizer (yet) and wich is complicated to play them on a TV Screen. Great vidéo btw 👍
The batteries not being able to charge while you're playing is a huge minus, plus the power cable not using a standard USB port as well. As for the battery compartment, you should have used a drill to make a clean hole and thread the battery wire through that. The giant cavity with the jagged edges is definitely a mistake.
You could easily modify it to use usb-c/micro-usb instead of that barrel charger... that also could work as port for external gamepad(but that need some custom pcb and some delicate work). Thenuse bigger battery(but it look bad in translucent case) also I remember that there is mod for bigger screen... so yeah, we can go even more with modding.
One thing I don't really care much on GBC mods is the battery one. The energy density to good Ni-MH cells is about the same, and with those you get to have as many batteries as you want fully charged ready to go, and specially, with zero modding needed. Also nothing impedes you from adding the internal Ni-MH charger as well like with the Li-Ion. The one thing Li-Ion mods got tho is weight.
I did a similar build 6-7 months ago, and I'm using it all the time. I used none of the same parts/kits, but it has most of the functionality. I'm tempted to do that LED kit just to get low battery warnings, because as it is now, it just shuts off on it's own.
With your discount code, all four of these mods would run about $125ish. Not bad. Considering I still have my original GBC and would like to refurbish it at some point. The speaker doesn’t work anymore and needs repair. These mods are cool enough that it makes me want to tear into it, mod it and fix the speaker at the same time.
If you take a heat gun to where you cut clear plastic carefully it turns back clear, Or for that matter any color plastic turns back to its color. Get it tooo hot and it will get too shiney. Just some advice.
Great video as always! I just wish a screen like that would be available for the GBA. That way I wouldn't be conflicted between getting the Analogue Pocket and a modded GBA
That sure is a SERIOUSLY tricked out GBC! I suppose one other con I'd add is that using the HDMI feature pretty much tethers you to your television since you can't use a separate controller like with the consolized GB kits, plus the fact that many HDMI cables are fairly short. Overall though, I thought this build was pretty cool.
i dont have an hdmi port but i managed to fit two speakers in the front of mine by replacing the factory power board with a clean power board, leaves just enough room to put a speaker there hardest part is drilling new holes for the sound to come out of, i used an extra shell i had as a template and clamped them face to face then poked the holes through the template shells speaker holes to transfer the pattern
You can make the flex pcb even flatter by holding it down with neodymium magnets. This way ut won't be just flat at the points, it'll be flat everywhere.
The case from funnyplaying is much better because the Q5 ips display already sticks to the glass there and thus the gap between the screen and the glass is left out.
IDK if they make them anymore, but there used to be really cool chiptune mods for the gbc. I had a gbc with a bunch of mods for that and was the coolest thing. Althought a little bit cumbersome sometimes for gaming but chiptune music is awesome.
@@racooninvasion I would recommend the laminated IPS kit from FunnyPlaying. To make it extra easy, also get the FunnyPlaying Shell. That kit for the Game Boy Color is perfection and doesnt have the HDMI feature, highly recommended!
the battery mod not being able to charge when in use is a major set back, I'd like the battery indicator on the screen not look like the pixels are just not turned on(and if that could be turned off), and I'd wonder if a stock/Nintendo branded GBC wall power supply even work with this battery mod. I like a lot of things about this GBC mod setup but those little nit picks would make it pointless. I love the ideas these mods propose but damn Funny play did you have to just goof up the execution. I hope they iron out these inconveniences so this is just a kit cause this mod setup looks sick. And the white leds not showing white would probably be due to the pealessent coating on the shell distorting the color cause in the video it looked like a green dot with a blueish halo.
I really love that pearlescent plastic, I have something I need to get injection molded and would to have it look like that Might have to reach out to the company who made the shell to get further information.
@@MachoNachoProductions Haha, unfortunately they said they can't share that information but told me to ask the Game Boy Discord as I may receive an answer there. Was worth a shot at least!

I agree and think quality nimh batteries are a great power alternative. I still use eneloops in some of my consoles.
Fantastic mod. My only gripes are the ones you stated. Definitely gonna try and start modding some gameboys this summer.
Thank you 🙏☺️
@@MachoNachoProductions No problem man. Love your videos.
that shell is absolutely stunning
I did a similar build 6-7 months ago, and I'm using it all the time. I used none of the same parts/kits, but it has most of the functionality. I'm tempted to do that LED kit just to get low battery warnings, because as it is now, it just shuts off on it's own.
That is definitely one of my favorite features of the led kit
With your discount code, all four of these mods would run about $125ish. Not bad. Considering I still have my original GBC and would like to refurbish it at some point. The speaker doesn’t work anymore and needs repair. These mods are cool enough that it makes me want to tear into it, mod it and fix the speaker at the same time.
If you take a heat gun to where you cut clear plastic carefully it turns back clear, Or for that matter any color plastic turns back to its color. Get it tooo hot and it will get too shiney. Just some advice.
Thanks for the tip 🙏👍
i wish the psp had mods like that. well done on this one. thinking about getting this .
I’m hoping we see more psp mods in the future
Great video as always! I just wish a screen like that would be available for the GBA. That way I wouldn't be conflicted between getting the Analogue Pocket and a modded GBA
Thank you Zoe! There are some great options for the GBA. Check out some of my older videos 😁
The Blingboy Color is glorious.
The instructions in this video are outstanding, thank you for using such soothing music 👍
You didn't mention battery life ?
Oh HECK YEAH!!!!!!
Get ready 😁
That sure is a SERIOUSLY tricked out GBC! I suppose one other con I'd add is that using the HDMI feature pretty much tethers you to your television since you can't use a separate controller like with the consolized GB kits, plus the fact that many HDMI cables are fairly short. Overall though, I thought this build was pretty cool.
Yes, that’s true. It would be awesome to build Bluetooth controller compatibility into these mods
i dont have an hdmi port but i managed to fit two speakers in the front of mine by replacing the factory power board with a clean power board, leaves just enough room to put a speaker there hardest part is drilling new holes for the sound to come out of, i used an extra shell i had as a template and clamped them face to face then poked the holes through the template shells speaker holes to transfer the pattern
pimp my gameboy . very cool how many mods were created . the console is loved.
Looks Awesome, as always 😍🤘. Maybe i will do somthing similiar too in the Future. Thanks for this helpful Video, love it 😊👍.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 😁🙏
You can make the flex pcb even flatter by holding it down with neodymium magnets. This way ut won't be just flat at the points, it'll be flat everywhere.
20:51 that is literally old Nokia charging cable
The case from funnyplaying is much better because the Q5 ips display already sticks to the glass there and thus the gap between the screen and the glass is left out.
16:24 Alright, I'll stick to using rechargeable AA NiMH/Li-Ion batteries then, thanks! 😂👍
IDK if they make them anymore, but there used to be really cool chiptune mods for the gbc. I had a gbc with a bunch of mods for that and was the coolest thing. Althought a little bit cumbersome sometimes for gaming but chiptune music is awesome.
I have no idea how to do this but it’s satisfying to watch 😂
NICE! Now we need Bluetooth and WI-FI, lol. LOVE that shell and LED's!
Haha Yes Todd! I’m sure we’ll get there in day 😁
@@MachoNachoProductions Hey, what is a good LCD screen for this without the HDMI? Also, do they make a drop in IPS for tgis? Thanks, Tito!
@@racooninvasion I would recommend the laminated IPS kit from FunnyPlaying. To make it extra easy, also get the FunnyPlaying Shell. That kit for the Game Boy Color is perfection and doesnt have the HDMI feature, highly recommended!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yes, but that PEARL SHELL, LOL! I hope they make a version for the laminated IPS :) Thanks, Tito!
Could it have been done with version 2 of the IPS? cause them screens man. You do awesome work!!!!
Thank you EJ!! I believe it is only compatible with Q5 panels
the battery mod not being able to charge when in use is a major set back, I'd like the battery indicator on the screen not look like the pixels are just not turned on(and if that could be turned off), and I'd wonder if a stock/Nintendo branded GBC wall power supply even work with this battery mod.
I wish there was a laminated screen with HDMI, it just looks so good!
I’m hoping we see that next. That would have been awesome!
I really love that pearlescent plastic, I have something I need to get injection molded and would to have it look like that
Might have to reach out to the company who made the shell to get further information.
Totally agree dude! It’s super attractive. Not sure how they pulled off the pearlescent look but they definitely knocked it out of the park!
@@MachoNachoProductions Haha, unfortunately they said they can't share that information but told me to ask the Game Boy Discord as I may receive an answer there.
Was worth a shot at least!
