  • Dock Mod Almost Turns GBA Into A SWITCH
WARNING! Something that I was just made aware of is that in order to use the dock, you must first remove the batteries from the GBA! Since the dock also powers the console the batteries must be removed. I would also consider this a Con since it makes using the dock a little more inconvenient.
In today's video, I'll be installing a kit that allows the Game Boy Advance to be played by an external wireless controller via a USB-C docking station. This is ideal for an HDMI modded console and solves the problem of being tethered to the television by a thick and heavy HDMI cable. This also allows you to play the console using an external controller as opposed to being relegated to the onboard controles of the GBA. Once this mod is installed in the GBA ,and is coupled with a HDMI mod, this essentially turns the GBA into a Switch like console. So, let's take a closer look at the GBA Dock!

Just in case your are curious. I took the hdmi mod and dock you have here and implemented a cheap GBA consolizer. I removed the internals from the dock and placed the components inside a 3d printed woozle GBA case from thingiverse. I soldered everything as normal and the only modifications I made were: 1. Used a mini usb c female breakout pcb with the 24 connections and used that along with a right angle adapter to connect to the dock internals. 2. Modified the 3d print to have a slightly higher height to make it easier to accommodate the internals. Open hole on right side for power to connect to the dock internals. 3. Desoldered the snes controller port and attached with wires 28 awg to give me better flexibility of placing in the case. I can share pictures and more details if you want but to me it was a cheaper way to get the gba consolizer.

I think it's two separate shots of a spinning gba (could be done by using hooks or attaching the GC link cable as a grip) and a spinning usb-C dock. Might be in front of a green screen so it's easy to cut out the background.
Those two shots are then combined, and made to look more dynamic using after effects or any other editing software.

Several years ago I looked into ways to play my gba on a tv screen, and apart from emulators, there was basically a gba consolizer, which I wasn't ready to tackle putting together. Maybe I didn't do good research, but I didn't find anything about how to mod a gba to have tv out.... Fast forward to a year ago and I purchased an Analogue pocket almost exclusively to play gba/gbc games on my tv. I literally waited an entire year to get it, thinking that was my best option to play gba on the tv if I didn't want software emulation. I wish I had known about all this. Ironically, it seems setting up one of these systems would cost about the same amount of money as getting an analogue and a dock. Although you wouldn't have to wait a year, and you may have to put it together yourself. Thanks for sharing this. I'm getting ready to either purchase or buy a modded gba and I am learning so much.

Maybe they can design a newer version to have a switch (like how the GBA cart reader has a switch to read either GB / GBC or GBA games) when the GBA is inserted into the dock. This switch would shut off the power from the AA batteries / USB-C battery pack, only allowing power from the dock's USB-C connection.
For the HDMI connection, maybe in the future we can find a way to pass through the HDMI signal through the USB-C dock connection, then put the HDMI-out on the dock (very similar to a switch).
I'm just brainstorming; great to see all these different mods coming out! Can't wait to see what more come out / combine in the future!

I think this kit misses a huge piece of functionality...The other things I can overlook, but if you are going to have a USB-c port added to the device, There is very little that would stop you from being able to add a rechargeable battery to this. or to even have it powered by the USB-C while connected. This mod leaves you still dependent on batteries, from what I am hearing here. and that just sucks. I am assuming later iterations of this will add that functionality. At least, I hope it does.

The dock itself could do with a better design, all that weight resting solely on the USB-c connector and not support for the console. That said it is still a great way to play, just plug the USB-c in and your away.
The HDMI version also has a 5v out pad so you can mod a rechargeable battery pack so it charges when docked two. (no need for two usb-c ports on the bottom then)

How long you needed to do it?

Idea, I know I’m late, but here goes…
Make a new USB-C battery board, with this docking feature built into the board, as well as video out enabled on the board. Even if it requires a new case, one with the battery compartment removed and this mounts to the back of the shell, I think everyone would be fine with that. And the dock, it needs one more than added in, built in wireless connection for the remotes. A nice 2.4ghz wireless connection built in would really help out, especially not needing to plug any adapters in. And the dock needs HDMI out and maybe even USB-C video out to help future proof for future devices. Maybe even a small FPGA chip in the dock that has proper integer scaling built in. I’d pay for that for sure.

@@MHSyaoran Both the DS and the 3DS have two main problems: 2 screens and uncommon input methods.
The dual-screen system is also used in several different ways. Most of the games use it as a map/menu interface, but then you have games in which the lower screen is a vertical continuation of the upper screen. Other times it's rather a horizontal continuation. Several games used it in a vertical way, so you needed to turn the console 90° right or left (depending on if you are left or right handed). And some games even asked you to fold and unfold the screen in order to solve some puzzles.
Then the input methods... You cannot properly remap the mic and the touch-screen to a regular controler. You should do this to a SmartPhone...

I feel like for DS it could be a space constraint but the test points are certainly there! Also with 3DS stuff like this is already doable with a feature called Input redirection on a modded 3DS, you do have to go through a PC but it is fully wireless and works very well

@@quickrat3348 Even with all those issues, there are still plenty of games that would work fine. For example, I play the Ace Attorney DS games on an emulator. I have it set up so a button toggles which screen you're looking at. A normal controller works fine. I'm not sure if it would be possible, but the Wii U gamepad would make a dope controller for a DS/3DS TV mod. It even has the microphone.

I LOVE the addition of the Wii Classic controller plug. I don't have a SNES but I have a Wii U and SNES mini and was worried I'd need to buy another wireless controller.
I can't wait for them to get DP Alt mode working, it's 100% possible, but for now the video out workaround works.
Sidenote: do you know why Nintendo used only 3 screws to secure the motherboard? There's several extra screw holes so I don't know why this is the case.
Side sidenote: is this safe to use with non rechargeable AA's? I don't know if it's safe to wire the power right to the terminals like that.

For the usecase of connecting a controller while on HDMI, it might have made a lot more sense to have a mod that installed a Bluetooth receiver chip.
That eliminates a lot of cons. No more case modding. Slight easier install. No need for a USB power adapter or to remove the batteries.
The downsides to such an approach is that it restricts you to Bluetooth controllers, it might be hard to sync a controller, and it requires batteries.
Alternatively, a future version of this mod should go full out and incorporate video over USB and proper support for batteries (either automatic switching between internal/output power, or going full out with a rechargeable battery)

It probably wouldn't be clean, but you could cludge the HDMI out to be beside the USB C and add an HDMI cable to the dock. Not the best solution as you'd need to align two ports to the dock, but it would get you most of the way to an all-in-one type of thing

So the perfect Switch GBA is:
1-A dock that allows playing on HDMI on the right proportions, ultra low latency
2-Don't need to fit a cable on the top
3-The dock turn off the connection to the batteries and power up the unit by itself, no need to remove the batteries
4-Allows bluetooth audio and controllers at same time without affecting the latency
5-Allows those famous controllers ports known for confort like GC, Classic Mini Consoles and USB
6-Allows firmware updates to give support to max number of different controllers like the ones for people with special necessities such as Xbox Adaptive Controller. You can map the buttons on controllers using a software and uploading it to your dock(for example, some people want to disable accidental Left Analog inputs and focus only on Dpad)
7-Everything is done by a USBC interface at the bottom
8-The USBC can be angled to not break easily
9-A precut shell ready for all those modding
    And of course
10-IPS LCD/OLED panel, the most important one, the one that gave a boom to GBA modding scene
    Yeah manufacturers, take notes haha.
    A full 9 in 1 modkit.
