I seriously doubt where you are coming from. Natives use "my friend" all the time. It is a very natural and fluid word, actually. Many Japanese are misunderstanding this as a result. This makes me wonder, where are you from?

As a lot of other natives have pointed, I too feel that this video is off point. I have never felt anything singular or weird about "my friend" and many natives use it often.
Listen man, I'm sorry but you're just wrong here. english speakers use "my friend" all the time, much more than the clunky "a friend of mine". Its simpler and less wordy. You've clearly over thought this and you're giving out false information that is going to confuse your viewers as the try to learn english. "I'm going to see my friend" is a totally fine and normal sentence. It doesn't sound weird at all, and any native english speaker would say so as well. 'My' does not indicate singularity, I could say "my friends" "my parents" "my feet." Its is whether the noun following it is singular or plural that determines its singularity, and it is also relative to context. If I own a book and someone is trying to steal it, I'd say, "Hey! thats my book!" that doesn't mean that I only have one book, I could have a hundred, but since we are only talking about that single book, we would use 'my'. You proposal of replacing 'my' with 'a friend of mine' is clunky and more awkward than just using 'my'. Lets take this for example. I have three brothers and ONE of them has come to pick me up from school. If I see him, I would say "hey, thats my brother" and it would be totally normal. It doesn't mean he is my only brother, but he is the only one that is here But if I were to say "hey, that is a bother of mine" it just sounds awkward man. I think you've made a problem where there wasn't one. You've made good videos in the past, but I'm just being honest that you're flat out wrong here. you've identified a problem that doesn't exist and created a solution that will only further confuse things. I really think you aught to take this video down man, because you owe it to your viewers as an educator to provide them with good information, but what you've taught them here will confuse them in the future and is ultimately detrimental. I'm a native speaker and I used "my friend" when speaking of my friends... cause if the other person doesn't know them and doesn't need to, then why should I mention the name?
Me too. If they don't know who "Jason" is, I just say "I'm going to meet my friend for lunch". Gramatically, it sounds like you only have one friend, but it still makes sense because the friend's name is irrelevant to the conversation.

As many people in the comment section are saying, I never really found it weird when people say “my friend”, I use it all the time and I’m a native speaker. Obviously “a friend of mine” works too, but I feel it’s just a matter of preference.

lol what. 'I will see my friend' sounds clunky not because of 'my friend' but because of 'I will see.' Native speakers would probably say 'I'm gonna (going to) see my friend.' or more likely 'I'm gonna hang out with my friend' / 'I'm seeing my friend later'. You could substitute it for 'a friend' but 'a friend of mine' literally is 'my friend' just conjugated differently. Your Japanese is quite good though.
I actually disagree. I would say “I’m going to see my friend” meaning one of my many friends. If someone said the same to me I wouldn’t even consider that they only had one friend.... this point is really splitting hairs. 動画のポイントの方が変よ...ネイティブにとしてはmy friend だけ言うと全然問題ないと思う。
This video is full of misleading information. The reason that a phrase like "my friend Julia is pretty" is grammatically correct is that you yourself are a singular person. Whether the quantity which you are referring to is singular or plural has no bearing on the word "my". There is no indication that Julia is your only friend, merely that she's the friend of a singular person, you. Similarly, the example of the definite article "the" which you used to justify your false assumption also doesn't need to refer to a singular quantity. "The french fries were delicious" is a grammatically correct sentence. A definite article specifies a particular quantity, as opposed to an indefinite article, like "a", which does not specify quantity. Though it's perfectly fine to say "a friend of mine", it sounds awkward if it's used to refer to a particular friend doing an action. For example, saying "Josh, a friend of mine, has a motorcycle" would sound strange to most native speakers. Instead, it would be far better to say "my friend Josh has a motorcycle. Please don't propagate false information to second-language English learners, especially while hiding behind this veneer which you know appeals to a Japanese audience. Being a native English speaker doesn't qualify you to be an English nor to speak for all native English speakers. Coming to a "realization" and then teaching it as if it's a formally accepted rule is a gross misuse of the platform you have here. I have no formal grammatical training, yet I felt compelled to comment because what you're doing here is severely damaging.

Most of the English speakers I've spoken to about this (native and non-native, because I know non-native speakers who have a far better grasp of the language than I do) don't agree with your point, and I think a few of them have also left comments on this video. Other than that, your Japanese is great!

Listen, my friend: I understand what you are saying but it seems to me that you are just knitpicking little things no native speakers would expect from ESL people. Videos like this make Japanese people even more shy than they already are. You should just encourage viewers to stop caring about tiny details and start enjoying conversations. You are giving fears to Japanese people by telling them how YOU judge people's English while most others don't care at all. IMO It's better to help viewers gain confidence by saying it's ok to be not perfect all the time because noone really is!

これはちょっと違いますね。英語母語話者として僕はI'm gonna go meet with my friendとか結構言います。I'm gonna meet my friendという文の変なところはmeetの使い方かなと思います。 to meetという動詞は初めて会うという意味もありますので、一般的に「友達に合う」と言いたい場合にはI'm going to meet with friendやI'm going to meet up with friendやI'm going to go see my friendと言ったほうがいいかもしれません。 I'm no expert, though. You should pay attnetion to how natives say it in real life or in movies.
Albeit, using "I'm going to visit my friend" can be implied that we only have one friend, native speakers don't naturally assume that because we know what you're talking about. It's easier and more fluid to speak like this instead of being very specific like a textbook. It sounds like you've overthought some things but it's perfectly normal to use "my friend". Your examples of "my" being singular through comparison to favoritism is a bit off as well. Don't touch my stuff is a general plural use of my that everyone uses. "Like my videos please and subscribe", is something you hear from content creators all the time on RUclips and it's both plural without implying which one is best. If someone asks me what I'm doing and I say, "I'm going to visit my friend", it's possible I don't want to be specific so I can just say, "my friend". There's no need to give someone more information than I want as well and that's totally normal. The West is not so polite in our speech. There's a spot where you gave two sentences using "my friend", and "a friend of mine" and those are both correct, but that's because of the context in which they are used. You should speak about the context in which they're better suited for instead of making a problem about something that doesn't exist. Come back to the West, your native language misses you.
I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents worth. You said that possessive pronouns are kinna like the definite article "the", thus the noun it modifies gives the impression of being singular or exclusive in nature. I don't think that's always true. For example, a man says to another," That's my daughter." That doesn't mean the man has only one daughter. It only means that the man gave information that was limited to one particular daughter. If I dropped a key on to the floor and someone picked it up and I said," That's my key!", does that mean I only have that one key? Probably not. So let's take another example using "my friend". A coworker and I are walking to my apartment. I had scheduled the coworker to meet for the first time a friend of mine. As we approached my apartment, the coworker says," There is someone at your door." "That's my friend.", I answered. I've merely identified the person at the door as being "my friend" the one we previously had a conversation about. I've heard native speakers say stupid things and people with heavy accents impress me with the wealth of knowledge they possess. Also with native speakers coming in so many different colors, from a hog farmer in Oklahoma to a pub owner in Ireland to a Australian man in the outback. Being native doesn't guarantee you're going to get your point across on your first go. My Okinawan accent switches to somewhat of a Kansai accent automatically whenever I'm there because it generally facilitates smoother communication and I've picked it up from years of living in the area. But the listener and I both know that its not an authentic Kansai accent. Nobody cares. Its all about the conversation.

I'm a native speaker as well, and I also use "my friend". Maybe it depends on where you came from? I'm from US but "my friend" is totally fine here. My friend でも大丈夫ですよ。ネイティブですが、よく使います。
I would encourage you to really assess what you say when you say it, not just by what sounds fine when you are asked it. what people think they say and what they actually say is quite different sometimes

You just need to put a little disclaimer telling them "my friend" is completely okay to use, but there is another way to say it, which may sound better. You said "my friend" is correct, grammar wise. Like as I said, I'm from USA (I lived in the western side and now central) and "my friend" is pretty common here. Even today, I heard "yeah, my friend should be here soon, so don't worry." "My friend and I are gonna chill out at XXX Mall after this." Many people asked where you came from because this video didn't click to some of us living in different areas. By the way, did you know the age matters, too? I already know you made this into a video, but there was a hot discussion going on if you should answer “no problem” or “you're welcome” as a response to “thank you”. While seniors preferred ''you're welcome" and felt "no problem" is kind of rude, young people preferred "no problem" saying "you're welcome" sounds stuffy. So, like you said, how we speak do shift, I suppose :)

違和感があるかないかと、誤用かどうかはまた別なので微妙なところですが、うなぎ文が世界の言語に見られる感覚に若干近い気もします。

私はカナダに1年間留学して気づいたことはこういう「ネイティブスピーカーが教える日本人の英語の間違い」系は「正しいけどどうでもいい」ことがほとんどだという事。日本語でいえば「すいません」は間違いで正しくは「すみません」です、すいませんだと何を吸わないのー？って日本人は思っちゃうよ、っていうくらいのものですよ。my friendも同じです。海外で私はa friend of mine言ったことないですが1年間まったく問題無かったですし、突っ込まれることも向こうが？みたいな顔をする事も無かったです。
日本人の恥ずかしいところは英語の出来不出来ではなく、海外に対する無意識の劣等感だと思います。こうやってネイティブが言えばなんでも鵜呑みするのは非常に危ういことです。
まさにそれですね！！そういう細かいルールにガチガチになると余計英語でコミュニケーションとりにくくなっちゃう人多そう。間違い気にせず話すのが一番だと思うんですけど、恥ずかしいと思っちゃうのが日本人の性(笑)
あと、なんでもかんでも情報を鵜呑みにしないのはほんと大事！

usatandaisuki 返信ありがとうございます。ただこの動画の方は比較的「ケースバイケースだ」という意見を織り交ぜていたり、「動画を見るより実際に話す方が大事」だと他の動画でもおっしゃっているので、誠意のある方だと思います。ただ中には、そんなに気にするほどでもない事をあえて問題にしてるものもあるように思えたので、見ている方がちゃんと情報を取捨選択出来ればいいなと思います。
この動画は別に重箱の隅を突いてるわけじゃない。

I seriously doubt where you are coming from. Natives use "my friend" all the time. It is a very natural and fluid word, actually. Many Japanese are misunderstanding this as a result. This makes me wonder, where are you from?

Listen man, I'm sorry but you're just wrong here. english speakers use "my friend" all the time, much more than the clunky "a friend of mine". Its simpler and less wordy. You've clearly over thought this and you're giving out false information that is going to confuse your viewers as the try to learn english. "I'm going to see my friend" is a totally fine and normal sentence. It doesn't sound weird at all, and any native english speaker would say so as well. 'My' does not indicate singularity, I could say "my friends" "my parents" "my feet." Its is whether the noun following it is singular or plural that determines its singularity, and it is also relative to context. If I own a book and someone is trying to steal it, I'd say, "Hey! thats my book!" that doesn't mean that I only have one book, I could have a hundred, but since we are only talking about that single book, we would use 'my'.
You proposal of replacing 'my' with 'a friend of mine' is clunky and more awkward than just using 'my'. Lets take this for example. I have three brothers and ONE of them has come to pick me up from school. If I see him, I would say "hey, thats my brother" and it would be totally normal. It doesn't mean he is my only brother, but he is the only one that is here But if I were to say "hey, that is a bother of mine" it just sounds awkward man.
I think you've made a problem where there wasn't one. You've made good videos in the past, but I'm just being honest that you're flat out wrong here. you've identified a problem that doesn't exist and created a solution that will only further confuse things. I really think you aught to take this video down man, because you owe it to your viewers as an educator to provide them with good information, but what you've taught them here will confuse them in the future and is ultimately detrimental. It does not sound strange at all to start with, and you are just confusing English learners and making them use wordy phrase ‘a friend of mine’ instead of using ‘my friend.’ All of my native friends at my university told me that you are wrong. Not saying that everything you said in this video is wrong (like yes they use ‘a friend of mine’ and other ways of saying it), but the main point is that you are making a problem that did not exist as a problem.

Me too. If they don't know who "Jason" is, I just say "I'm going to meet my friend for lunch". Gramatically, it sounds like you only have one friend, but it still makes sense because the friend's name is irrelevant to the conversation.

I'm a British person. This teacher is good, but really: if you speak like that, you will sound like a foreigner.
America's circumstances may be different, but in England, if you say "僕の友達に行こうと思うだ" it sounds like absolutely normal, vernacular speech. So that you can understand grammar, I think that this more specific way of talking is useful, but it is a robotic way of speaking. For example, in Japanese, people do not always say "regarding me", or "regarding _____" but do so depending on the circumstances. Mention [say] the subject once, and [people] understand. In english, we can also remove the subject at times.
"I'm going to meet my friend" in no way whatsoever implies the singular.

lol what. 'I will see my friend' sounds clunky not because of 'my friend' but because of 'I will see.' Native speakers would probably say 'I'm gonna (going to) see my friend.' or more likely 'I'm gonna hang out with my friend' / 'I'm seeing my friend later'. You could substitute it for 'a friend' but 'a friend of mine' literally is 'my friend' just conjugated differently. Your Japanese is quite good though.

This video is full of misleading information. The reason that a phrase like "my friend Julia is pretty" is grammatically correct is that you yourself are a singular person. Whether the quantity which you are referring to is singular or plural has no bearing on the word "my". There is no indication that Julia is your only friend, merely that she's the friend of a singular person, you. Similarly, the example of the definite article "the" which you used to justify your false assumption also doesn't need to refer to a singular quantity. "The french fries were delicious" is a grammatically correct sentence. A definite article specifies a particular quantity, as opposed to an indefinite article, like "a", which does not specify quantity.
Though it's perfectly fine to say "a friend of mine", it sounds awkward if it's used to refer to a particular friend doing an action. For example, saying "Josh, a friend of mine, has a motorcycle" would sound strange to most native speakers. Instead, it would be far better to say "my friend Josh has a motorcycle.
Please don't propagate false information to second-language English learners, especially while hiding behind this veneer which you know appeals to a Japanese audience. Being a native English speaker doesn't qualify you to be an English nor to speak for all native English speakers. Coming to a "realization" and then teaching it as if it's a formally accepted rule is a gross misuse of the platform you have here. I have no formal grammatical training, yet I felt compelled to comment because what you're doing here is severely damaging.

I understand what you are saying but it seems to me that you are just knitpicking little things no native speakers would expect from ESL people. Videos like this make Japanese people even more shy than they already are. You should just encourage viewers to stop caring about tiny details and start enjoying conversations. IMO It's better to help viewers gain confidence by saying it's ok to be not perfect all the time because noone really is!

また、間違った情報を流しているように思います。I’m going to see my friend は、とてもよく使う、文法的にも正しい文章です。I’m going to see a friend というのは、逆に不自然に感じます。なぜなら、友達のことを話す時、誰の友達であるかを表現することは重要だからです。a friend というと、よそよそしく聞こえますし、誰の友達に会うの？と、聞き返す必要が出てきます。情報をわざわざ減らす意味がわかりません。

僕には、母国語である日本語でさえ「正しい日本語」なるものがわかりません。いかに「正しい」日本語を使えても、状況や相手によっては真に「正しく」ない場合もあると思っています。現に、RUclipsのコメントでこんな内容を投稿し、こんな言い回しを用いているのも「正しい」かどうかわかりません。笑

これはちょっと違いますね。英語母語話者として僕はI'm gonna go meet with my friendとか結構言います。I'm gonna meet my friendという文の変なところはmeetの使い方かなと思います。
to meetという動詞は初めて会うという意味もありますので、一般的に「友達に合う」と言いたい場合にはI'm going to meet with friendやI'm going to meet up with friendやI'm going to go see my friendと言ったほうがいいかもしれません。
I'm no expert, though. You should pay attnetion to how natives say it in real life or in movies.

Albeit, using "I'm going to visit my friend" can be implied that we only have one friend, native speakers don't naturally assume that because we know what you're talking about. It's easier and more fluid to speak like this instead of being very specific like a textbook. It sounds like you've overthought some things but it's perfectly normal to use "my friend".
Your examples of "my" being singular through comparison to favoritism is a bit off as well. Don't touch my stuff is a general plural use of my that everyone uses. "Like my videos please and subscribe", is something you hear from content creators all the time on RUclips and it's both plural without implying which one is best. If someone asks me what I'm doing and I say, "I'm going to visit my friend", it's possible I don't want to be specific so I can just say, "my friend". There's no need to give someone more information than I want as well and that's totally normal. The West is not so polite in our speech.
There's a spot where you gave two sentences using "my friend", and "a friend of mine" and those are both correct, but that's because of the context in which they are used. You should speak about the context in which they're better suited for instead of making a problem about something that doesn't exist. Come back to the West, your native language misses you.

You said that possessive pronouns are kinna like the definite article "the", thus the noun it modifies gives the impression of being singular or exclusive in nature. I don't think that's always true. For example, a man says to another," That's my daughter." That doesn't mean the man has only one daughter. It only means that the man gave information that was limited to one particular daughter. If I dropped a key on to the floor and someone picked it up and I said," That's my key!", does that mean I only have that one key? Probably not.
So let's take another example using "my friend". A coworker and I are walking to my apartment. I had scheduled the coworker to meet for the first time a friend of mine. As we approached my apartment, the coworker says," There is someone at your door." "That's my friend.", I answered. I've merely identified the person at the door as being "my friend" the one we previously had a conversation about. I haven't given any information as to whether that person is the only friend I have or not.

@@l.l.8731 My point is that you don't have to in order to communicate effectively. I've heard native speakers say stupid things and people with heavy accents impress me with the wealth of knowledge they possess.
Also with native speakers coming in so many different colors, from a hog farmer in Oklahoma to a pub owner in Ireland to a Australian man in the outback. Being native doesn't guarantee you're going to get your point across on your first go.
My Okinawan accent switches to somewhat of a Kansai accent automatically whenever I'm there because it generally facilitates smoother communication and I've picked it up from years of living in the area. But the listener and I both know that its not an authentic Kansai accent. Nobody cares. Its all about the conversation.

アメリカに住んで長いのですが、"I'm gonna meet my friend today" や "This is my friend, Sarah." のような文章は、日常茶飯事に聞きます。
一方で、"a friend of mine"は、ネイティブスピーカーの口から、一度も聞いたことがありません。
この動画を発見した私の友人（英語ネイティブ兼日本語学習中）が、今回のビデオで紹介されている英文法は少しおかしいと言ってきました。
私も、今回のビデオは、間違った情報を伝えていると感じました。
そこで質問なのですが、国や地域によって、英語は文法も異なるのでしょうか？

I'm a native speaker as well, and I also use "my friend". Maybe it depends on where you came from? I'm from US but "my friend" is totally fine here. My friend でも大丈夫ですよ。ネイティブですが、よく使います。
I would encourage you to really assess what you say when you say it, not just by what sounds fine when you are asked it.

@@iuconnecttokyo I think you're overthinking. This is Eikaiwa, isn't it? You just need to put a little disclaimer telling them "my friend" is completely okay to use, but there is another way to say it, which may sound better.
You said "my friend" is correct, grammar wise. Then, that's the answer. 『文法的に間違ってはいない』っておっしゃいましたよね。ならばそれが答えです。"My friend"でもいいですが、"a friend of mine"とか"one of my friends"という言い方もありますって説明したほうが良い動画になったと思います。私だけではなく、コメントにもあるように他のネイティブも自然に使うのですから。小説の台詞とか映画とかにもよくでてきます。

I just read one of your comments below that you're actually from New England, and that made a lot of sense to me. Like as I said, I'm from USA (I lived in the western side and now central) and "my friend" is pretty common here. Even today, I heard "yeah, my friend should be here soon, so don't worry." "My friend and I are gonna chill out at XXX Mall after this."
Many people asked where you came from because this video didn't click to some of us living in different areas. By the way, did you know the age matters, too? I already know you made this into a video, but there was a hot discussion going on if you should answer “no problem” or “you're welcome” as a response to “thank you”. While seniors preferred ''you're welcome" and felt "no problem" is kind of rude, young people preferred "no problem" saying "you're welcome" sounds stuffy. So, like you said, how we speak do shift, I suppose :)
