@@SuperCatacata It's hard for pitchers to win ROTY or MVP, especially when his team doesn't let him pitch much. For instance Head to Head this season: Padres 6, Pirates 0. Merrill deserves RotY because he was a big part of his team winning each of those 6 games while Skenes sat in the dugout every game - not just cuz his team won.
I think so far Jackson Merrill has the edge but there is still a month of baseball to be played. A month ago Skenes was the favorite. A lot can change in a month.
Kazuhiro Sasaki was ROTY in 2000, despite being 32 years old, going 2-5 and only pitching 62.2 IP. He SO 78 batters which was impressive though. He was a closer so that explains why he got the award.
Best pitcher on the planet in 2024? Can't argue that, but rookie of the year? Not with only 17 games under his belt. Merrill has played 130 plus and factors in to every game . Skenes has only factored in to 17 total games. For this reason, rookie pitchers should not be included in ROTY award and should have their own award. Merrill all day.

Jackson Merrill has done more overall then any other rookie. Also he has the lowest K rate, so you kinda did him dirty when taking about his plate discipline.
IMO the only reason Skenes isn't going to get ROTY is because he plays for the Pirates. He still only has 2 losses on the year but only 9 wins. Meaning if he was on a team with any kind of bullpen he's 17-2 and it would be a runaway.

Nobody can watch the two of them on the field and think that Merrill is the better player. No disrespect to him, he's really good. Even if he qualifies for the award, he doesn’t qualify for the leaderboards, which make his stats extremely watered down. Not factoring in WAR at all when comparing a position player to a starting pitcher is the weakest arguement you make because that is the ONLY stat that directly compares value between hitters and pitchers, without it you literally have no comparison
The fact that Paul is quite literally one year removed from his draft year. Every other potential candidate has had more time in professional baseball. That alone is insane

I appreciate the work put into this video but I think we’re forgetting one very key component of why someone should win ROTY. That component is “who is the best player?” Skenes was drafted 14 months ago and was so good in his first 11 minor league starts that the Pirates couldn’t punt on this season & were forced to send him to the Major Leagues while not being able to have an extra year of control before he becomes eligible for free agency. They couldn’t let him play minor league ball because he could’ve ONLY gotten worse by playing inferior talent & developing habits that may not work as an MLB starting pitcher. And almost immediately he became one of the five best pitchers in baseball. The biggest concern about him coming into this year was if he had any other pitch that he could throw other than his fastball and he put ALL of that doubt to rest in like 30ish minor league innings. I don’t think that we should discount his minor league starts even though they don’t technically count towards qualifying him as a starter in the majors. He is absolutely the most electric starting pitcher in baseball and he may be the only reason to watch an entire pirates game this year. I’m saying this because it reminds me of the Gobert Vs Wembanyama debate because Wemby was on a minutes restriction so people used it as a knock on him and within a few months a lot of the people who voted for Gobert to win his fourth NBA DPOY realized that Wemby is VERY clearly the better defender and it’s not even particularly all that close and we can’t use an organization trying to tank for another high draft pick as a critique against a truly generational player not being allowed to play a full season as a rookie.
The reason he hasn’t thrown that many innings is not because he has been injured or because he’s extremely inefficient, it’s because he didn’t get called up until mid May. I’m not saying he should win I’m just saying that it shouldn’t be held against him because the organization held him back.

"Swoop in to take Skenes' Award". Why is it presumptive? Looking at the whole year, Merrill has had a bigger impact on the game and the team. Skenes is great, but if doesn't have a qualified ERA, should he be qualified for ROY?
Skenes is the rookie of the year and it’s not even close, if he doesn’t win rookie of the year should be separated into pitcher and hitter because no pitcher will even win
This is becoming a problem when deciding post season awards through all pro sports..... advanced stats are a great tool, until they start causing people to sleep too close to themselves. Everybody who paid attention knew TJ Watt was the DPOY, he was way ahead in nearly every stat, EXCEPT beating the initial block win percentage. THIS was the excuse given for the DPOY theft- apparently, its more important to beat a block and NOT get to the QB, than it is to finish the play with a sack or QB hit. The people who believe this also laugh at the idea that the "eye test" holds any weight. Now, it looks like Skenes is gonna deal with the same shit. He's at the very least, one of the 5 best pitchers in baseball, any of those other guys even in the conversation for best at their position? Skenes has consistently put up ridiculous numbers for a sub .500 team and looked like a CY Young pitcher all year, as a rookie. Its obvious that hes the RoY, but now we're trying to find the necessary excuses, through advanced stats, to explain why the obvious winner, shouldn't be the winner..... This is becoming a trend, but sometimes the guy with the best numbers, who also LOOKS the most dominant, should get the award.... even if another guy has a super high OPS+, away, against lefties, at night when his opponent has a beard. It doesnt have to be rocket science all the time, we can all see who the best rookie has been, its been blatant ALL year.
@@LucasGomez04 okay what about 74 games and 74 homers, thats not even half of the season yet its a major league record, would they be the most valuable player for a team that only has them for a little under half a season? the only award i see a player like that getting is a slugger award for something like that to happen, 2021 degrom shouldve won the 2021 cy young, yet he didnt play anywhere near the full season

It’s a shame that Skenes didn’t get a start against the Padres this season. We might have had some head-to-head data. But alas, his position in their rotation didn’t align with the schedule and he never had a start against the Padres 2024 highly rated offense. As a result the Pirates and Skenes got season swept by the Padres and will not be in the postseason.
Musgroves come back game against the Buckos was already electric. If Skenes was pitching, probably would have broken the attendance record...on a Monday night. Game was already sold out.
@@peskytalk I disagree. They played six games in a two week span after the all-star break. Pirates were very much still in the WC picture at that time. If it aligned to where Skenes had two dominating starts against the Padres, including shutting down Merrill in those appearances and helping his team stay alive, it would absolutely help his case. But whatever. Baseball fans win getting to see two young rising stars.
It's not like Skenes has been injured, he started the year in the minors. Had Skenes started the season on the Pirates as he should have, he'd be in contention for the CY. He has been a top 3 pitcher in MLB this season. More valuable than the other rookies who have also had great seasons. I have to disagree with this video.
I don't think this video will play out well long term. He is selling out the stadium every time he pitches. No way Pirates will can him pr shut him down.
The real biggest reason is that his team keeps giving his well pitched games away. So many times he leaves with 6 or 7 great innings and then the pirates give the game away...no relief pitching, and in indie D can't make the simple plays...garbage!
Innings pitched? This era pitchers dont pitch nothing, less than 200 innings. How we miss Seaver, Carlton, Ryan, Sutton, etc. Thise were workhorses, and all pitched 20+ seasons. Todays pitchers are made of miao.
@@peskytalk but hes pitched like statistically the best pitcher itl. Even with a bottom 7 offense and a bottom 7 relief pitching staff Skenes is still 8-2, and with even an average performance from his offence he could be 10 or 11-2

Is a Joel embiid situation he put up good numbers in his technical rookie year but he only played 31 games so they gave the rookie of the year to Malcom brogdan that’s what’s gonna happen to paul skenses
Pitchers don’t contribute offensively so how can they be considered for certain awards. Merrill on the other hand has had a major impact on his team’s daily success
Paul skenes is days better than merrill, if paul was a two way player like he could have been in college (he was a catcher freshman and sophomore year) than he would be a better hitter than merrill. Both in college hit above .400 but then you add the factor that paul skenes is a pitcher throwing 100 when hes 120 pitches into a cws game. This shouldnt even be a comparison
@@peskytalk In the game of Baseball where the play always starts with the pitchers. Quality starts are more valuable. Don't get me wrong, Merrill has been a very good pickup considering where he's at right now and his room to grow but Rookie pitching prospects who pitch better than 5% of the leagues best pitchers now has way more worth. Pitchers control every pitch for every batter until they leave the game, 5 to 6 innings of 1-3 ER ball is way better than a batter only controlling 3-4 at bats a game. Especially when the bat comes from a Rookie with a league average 325 OBP, .37 BB/SO, .347wOBA, and a 127 wRC+. Merrill's good, but not 2.70 WPA, 53 ERA-, 2.72 FIP Skenes good. It should go to Gavin stone or Mason Wynn or Merrill
Agreed
Yeah honestly I feel like stone should win he’s been extremely good thus year
Yeah. No way. stone isn't even a top 5 rookie this year.
Jackson all day! Go Padres!
Well he does not even pitch every five days, it’s more like 11 days and he got little to no innings.
Jackson Merrill 💫 ROTY 🏆 2024
The batters are doing really well..but skenes is competing for the best pitcher ever in his rookie season
Could we make a case for shota imanaga?
Hitters should win the award because pitchers have to give up runs
If it isn’t ceddane Rafaela for Al rookie of the year I’ll be shocked
He’s not even the leading rookie on his own team
Get ready to be shocked lmao
You will be very shocked. Colton crossed will take it followed by rafaelas teammate Abreu.
i want Paul Skenes to win but i can't ignore the stats
If you can’t ignore the facts then you know Skenes should win
Merrill deserves the award
Was this video necessary? He hasn’t been the favorite for awhile
Did you play baseball past high school, or even in high school, or do you just look at numbers?
if a rookie plays 80 games but hits a home run in each game theyve played in would they be the rookie of the year?
Yes lol
He would probably win mvp if he does that
@@LucasGomez04 okay what about 74 games and 74 homers, thats not even half of the season yet its a major league record, would they be the most valuable player for a team that only has them for a little under half a season? the only award i see a player like that getting is a slugger award
for something like that to happen, 2021 degrom shouldve won the 2021 cy young, yet he didnt play anywhere near the full season
If someone even hit 50 homers in 70 games he’d most likely win MVP, maybe not this year with judge and Ohtani having literal historic seasons but generally that should be enough realistically
@@peskytalk no one is winning the mvp with 50 in 70 if their 50 hrs doesnt even help the team unless theyre really liked by the voters, if a guy who acted like albert bell did it he could kiss his chances goodbye, youd have to be a goody two shoes to win it only playing 70 games
Silly vid. Merrill is above average and not even best 3 on his team, Skenes is top 3 in all of MLB!! oh... Did you forget Skenes started the All STar Game!!!!???
Shota should be a serious candidate
Because Merrill stole the show!!that's it!!🤣🤣🤣👍
Kinda unbalanced cause Jackson Merrill play everyday vs Paul do stats will favor Jackson
BTW, Jackson made a great play in center to save the game.
Would’ve definitely been cool to see, but I don’t think it would have any affect on voting at all!
@@firehehe2 could've gone both ways, shutting down Merrill, or Merrill eating him up.
Skenes is still winning!
No
because of his GF, not baseball lol
It's not like Skenes has been injured, he started the year in the minors. Had Skenes started the season on the Pirates as he should have, he'd be in contention for the CY. He has been a top 3 pitcher in MLB this season. More valuable than the other rookies who have also had great seasons. I have to disagree with this video.
He’s got livvy Dunne, he’s still mvp
As a giants fan, its definitely FITZ
Joking. Merrill is insane
Id say you should have to qualify for other awards but... I understand how that can make the selection thin
Agreed, In most years I think skenes would still deserve it, but Merrill has been an elite player this year so give it to the guy that qualifies
I think Ceddane Rafaela might win the rookie of the year since Colton Cowser slowed down a lot
Wiyler probably has a better shot imo
@@peskytalk Wiyler is going to HIT once he figures it out. in the majors
I don't think this video will play out well long term. He is selling out the stadium every time he pitches. No way Pirates will can him pr shut him down.
The real biggest reason is that his team keeps giving his well pitched games away. So many times he leaves with 6 or 7 great innings and then the pirates give the game away...no relief pitching, and in indie
D can't make the simple plays...garbage!
Luckily wins and losses are irrelevant anyway!
Innings pitched? This era pitchers dont pitch nothing, less than 200 innings. How we miss Seaver, Carlton, Ryan, Sutton, etc. Thise were workhorses, and all pitched 20+ seasons. Todays pitchers are made of miao.
Dont understand it very well Skenes definitely has been better, as long as skenes doesn’t blow up he should be the winner.
He hasn’t pitched enough
@@peskytalk but hes pitched like statistically the best pitcher itl. Even with a bottom 7 offense and a bottom 7 relief pitching staff Skenes is still 8-2, and with even an average performance from his offence he could be 10 or 11-2
The record really isn’t going to come into play here, Ik he’s been very good but his workload has already gone down to 80 pitches and i think he’s going to be fully shutdown. Merrill has been probably the best NL CF in baseball and he’s going to play 150 games games, you gotta give it to him
Is a Joel embiid situation he put up good numbers in his technical rookie year but he only played 31 games so they gave the rookie of the year to Malcom brogdan that’s what’s gonna happen to paul skenses
Agreed
Can't forget Zack Hample for ROY.
Who?
Horrible take
Merrill all the way
Merrill
Yall just envious of his bombshell girlfriend 😜
merril
Pitchers don’t contribute offensively so how can they be considered for certain awards. Merrill on the other hand has had a major impact on his team’s daily success
Paul skenes is days better than merrill, if paul was a two way player like he could have been in college (he was a catcher freshman and sophomore year) than he would be a better hitter than merrill. Both in college hit above .400 but then you add the factor that paul skenes is a pitcher throwing 100 when hes 120 pitches into a cws game. This shouldnt even be a comparison
The Best pitcher in the whole league! ROTY n Cy Young
Sounds like Tony roast guy
Merrill's slash line and performance have been good for a Rookie but to not comparable to Skene's quality starts every time he steps on the mound.
Do they win every time he steps on the mound. No.
Sadly for skenes Merrill has been great 135 times where Skenes has been elite 18 times
Skene sits at Top 5 Pitchers in the league right now.
You mention Petecrow Armstrong and not Maysin Winn?
🤢
Maysin Winn?
I should’ve mentioned him with PCA
How can you go the whole video without mentioning Masyn Winn???? Easily a top 3 rookie this season behind only Merrill and Skenes.
Cause he’s an idiot
I still think Chourio has him beat but yea I should’ve mentioned him as well
Hey it’s LaMonte 👋, and I was thinking 🤔… will my teammate Tyler Fitzbarrels pull it off?
Hey Lamonte!
no
In the 8th or later he has 6 tying or go ahead hr’s
That’s an insane stat
“Why Paul Skenes is NOT Baseball's Rookie Of The Year...“
Answer: Livvy Dunne .. Jk jk dat boi winnin on & off the field 😎😎😎
Let's call him the cf vacuum! The padres have the next Griffen jr!
Where is masyn winn
I should’ve mentioned him
@@peskytalk ye😭
5 go ahead/game tying Hrs in the 9th or later
It was 4 when I recorded it! But he’s so insane he hit another one before I could finish editing
