How Paul Skenes Took Over Baseball Out Of Nowhere

- Paul Skenes has quickly become one of the most exciting pitchers in baseball, and with the ability to consistently throw 100+ mph, it’s easy to see why. However, his journey to stardom was not as easy as it may seem, and fans are worried that arm injuries are inevitable.
This is the story of Paul Skenes.

From AAA to the All Star game in just 2 months. Pretty impressive.
Dude went 1st overall in the draft. I'd hardly consider that "out of nowhere."
Here is a true example of "out of nowhere." Seth Lugo this year.
Facts
Skenes has been a meme lord since before he even entered the draft. Even his "splinker" sounds like a meme 😆
This
Yeah, honestly I was trying to say that he took over the entire baseball *scene* out of nowhere, not just MLB. So including when he became popular at LSU and got drafted #1 overall. I understand that it was maybe poor wording though
@averagebaseball he is the talk of the league so you're definitely right about that.
Skenes didn't start throwing 100+ until he went to LSU. The pitching coach put him on an MLB training program and worked his mechanics and then suddenly he was throwing 102-103. He can throw faster but chooses not to.
The poster boy for "damn, he sure got here fast!" was Dave Steib of the Toronto Blue Jays in 1978. That guy pitched like 3 games in college as an emergency replacement for starters getting lit up. He was an 400 hitting outfielder with power, who just so happened to possess a cannon arm. A Jays scout offered him a minor league contract after watching him pitch only once, as an emergency pitcher just trying to get the ball over the plate.
In less than 130 innings in the minor leagues, he was called up to the major leagues. He threw over 2000 innings in his first 10 seasons. This dude was amazing. Sometimes you find a guy like Paul Skenes, that's just that good.
He is must see TV. Even when he looks off he manages to post quality starts. This is bigger than Strasburg mania was and I’m all for it!!
He reminds me of mark the bird fidrych. you know that I know what I even sat down with your grandmother and she knows it
Hearing he was born in 2002 hurt my soul. I turned 23 that year.
I did a shot every time this dude said "however". I'm hammered.
It is pretty hilarious. Like 80% of this guy's sentences start with "but" or "however" or "so".
@@DavidGravesExists buut... 😆
Really great video. Happy to help too @ 0:53. 😉 Thought those kids looked familiar. All good. Keep up the good work. ✌
This dude says "However" more than a shonen anime
Pirate fan here. Hopefully they will get some offence to back their quality starters. Great vid. Thanks
Pirates fan let’s goooooo
we deserve it skenes made the bucs fun watching again
@@rozzelli6924 Yep! He pitched another great game last evening.
Got some last night 14-2 vs Mets. Was an unreal game to attend in Home Plate Club.
@@LordHighFixxer Cool!
I love it that this was kept to baseball and didn’t involve his love life
And thank God for that. I'm so sick of seeing and hearing about her.
Dude would give Gerritt Cole or Corbin Burnes the fight of their lives on a cold October night. I could see Skenes being the cold-blooded type.
W vid bro, I subbed, keep up the good work.
appreciate it! 🙏
Who thinks Paul Skenes is Spencer Striders secret twin
Definitely
They both have the greatest mustaches in the sport
I’m a braves fan we played against him yesterday I swore strider changed jerseys
Yea the twin that's not near as good 😂. I love Strider's game but he can't even hold Skenes jockstrap. Specifically Strider's off speed pitches are a lot less lethal than Skenes. Strider gets hit hard waaaay more often.
Skenes is better.
Yooo I’m your 7,200th sub😃👍
let's go, thank you!
@@averagebaseball yessir
I thought at LSU he was more over the top like Verlander and Nolan Ryan. He needs to get back to that or he's not going to last. Save the splinker for when you really need it. You got 5 pitches you can control, work on that, and make going over top your primary. He's big and powerful, too many pitches in this video are going to blow his arm out, much like Strider.
I wouldnt really say it was "out of nowhere." The guy was drafted #1 for a reason. He was a beast while at LSU. In the first minute of the video they talk about how he's the best prospect they've ever seen. It's pretty expected that he's gonna excel. To your point, maybe not to this degree quite yet... But still, he didn't really come out of nowhere.
JARED JONES came out of nowhere. Skenes was #1 and the talk of the season even in AA.
That LSU team was stacked, they also had 2nd overall pick Dylan crews, no wonder they won a natty.
Don’t forget Tommy “Tanks” White. He’s up next
nobody worried about Nolan Ryan...the human body can do this just fine. If you're at that level.
7:14 best part
It's been two months...and he was the #1 pick.
As a pirate, this is gives us a lot of hope
"out of nowhere" he has been the most hyped prospect since bryce harper, and was the consensus best pitching prospect of all time. Everyone saw this coming
finally, i love watching vids about skenes, he's an anomaly
Skenes throws with mostly his legs and core. It’s why he can throw so hard, but also why his arm might hold up. Will he 100% need Tommy John surgery at some point? Yes. But the surgery is world class now, it usually doesn’t have an impact on pitching velocity after a year.
I was at skenes debut
Let him finish a no-hitter
In 7 inn, he Ks 11 and walks ONE guy.
Analytics says a guy that is getting guys out like that continues to do so.
His arm wont fall off.
The video says arm injuries are more prevalent than ever. That would mean with the rise of limiting everyone’s pitches from the time they are in little league all the way through to the mlb, isn’t working.
That's bad science. How do you know there wouldn't be more without it?
In Stash I Trust
Out of Nowhere? No. Dude's been solid for a long time.
1:38 Wow. Only.
Sid finch lives
120 pitches is 3 of 4 games…Nolan Ryan hold my beer. Anyone thinking a starter going 5 innings as a quality start is just sad. A work horse stud #1 pitcher should be going 7, at minimum. This kid is electric!
I’m being honest. I feel like he would’ve had injury problems already. He’s throwing 100 effortlessly.
howeeevveerrrrr
He didn't come out of nowhere. Dude dominated college baseball an entire year
Yeah it seems that the title hasn't been interpreted the way I had thought haha. I was trying to say that he took over the entire baseball scene out of nowhere, not just MLB. So including when he became popular at LSU and got drafted #1 overall
Right-handed Randy Johnson
out of nowhere? I've been hearing about him all year
The title was meant to include when he became popular at LSU and got drafted #1 overall, not just after he got to MLB. I can see how it could be interpreted that way though
Hi
I love your content and have been a fan for a while!

Nice vid
Pirates rotation looking scary...
It won't last.
Ha! He “ONLY” grew another 5 inches to be 6’6” hilarious
But the problem is he's just one pitcher. The Pirates need three more of him to be a competitive team.
So he is American Sasaki?
Oh, can we add that Paul Skenes dealt Elly DeLaCruz his first pickoff at first base just two weeks ago!!! How 'bout them Buccos!!!
He reminds me of Dwight Gooden…a phenom. Hope the Pirates don’t screw him up!
Livvy Dunne.
Skenes taking over baseball is not out of nowhere.
It’s also he’s dating Livy Dunne which brings him into more mainstream
High school has a 110 pitch count limit. Why doesn’t college?
Let’s see how good he is once batters figure him out another overhyped prospect
Out of Nowhere? Did you not watch him at LSU?
Yeah it seems that the title hasn't been interpreted the way I had thought haha. I was trying to say that he took over the entire baseball *scene* out of nowhere, not just MLB. So including when he became popular at LSU and got drafted #1 overall
I prefer 🇺🇸Skenes🇺🇸 over Ohtani ANY DAY!!
We should start a go fund me. But no have you seen the training.
So how can you just leave the airforce? I'm confused
You can leave in your first two years, after that you’re locked in I’m pretty sure
He didn’t commission, nor did he enlist. The service academies are training you to be an officer. Most likely he didn’t contract yet so his baseball dream could be kept alive. I’m not sure exactly what the rules are because I’m in rotc at a state school which is a little different than a service academy.
Go look at Nolan Ryans numbers. You would say Skenes is putting up rookie numbers.
Nolan Ryan had a lifetime 2.97 fip and a career high of 11.5 so/9
Skenes this year has a fip of 2.78 with 11.8 so/9
Nolan Ryan is overated: Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Clemens, Walter Payton and Kershaw are the true pillars pitchers should be compared too
Kerry Wood 2.0
It's funny seeing my aunt in the booth with Livvy Dunne
Those last 4 games got him a national championship and made him the #1 overall pick. He doesn’t labor when he throws. It’s too bad we all obsess over pitchers throwing too much because we are worried something may happen. Not everyone blows out. Could he yeah but that doesn’t mean he will.
He hasn’t ’Broken’ baseball. How did he break it? These cliched clickbait titles are embarrassing
Take a shot every time this guy says "however".
hahah u might not survive. I didn’t think anyone would notice, will try to work on that
Well I suppose if ww3 breaks out skenes will be the first to join the military ie williams DiMaggio etc
The Pittsburgh Pitching machine produces another phenom who will sadly become a Yankee in 5 years lolzzz
hardly out of nowhere. he was a 65 FV prospect!
When you throw that hard it allows for a person to develope some unsavory shortcuts in form and delivery. Show me a pitcher who says he doesn't want a 102mph fastball and I will show you a liar
Who was the old man who Livvy dunne left the white party with? Tobey is in the picture with a girl 30 years younger than Tobey. Livvy looked like the old man bought her.
Tommy John is in his near future unfortunately.
I am seriously struggling? With the accent on this? Like, I'm not like sure where the letter t disappears?
bro forgot about livvy dunn
He’s good. But Nolan Ryan was the man. 7 no nos. Cmon dude. When skenes gets at least 1 then maybe …
First no he hasn’t, second since when is number 1 pick out of nowhere?
Looking at Paul Skenes, I worry. The dude is utterly dominate on the mound at times, but the human elbow isn't designed to take that kind of repeated stress, over and over again, over a course of years.
Maybe we will get lucky though, and he'll have both the velocity of Nolan Ryan, as well as his tendon strength. The game would defenitly be better for it.
Its just really hard to get excited for pitchers careers when their injuries keep them out for months/years.
agreed, hopefully he can stay healthy for some time though
When I look at his mechanics, it looks like he really uses all of his body to distribute the workload, should he’ll keep him healthy throughout his career
And he didn't start pitching until a few years ago
@@shadowlazers They said similar about DeGrom :(
Thank you for not making this video about his girlfriend lol. Yes she’s beautiful and yes she very talented, but good god almighty I’m sick of hearing about her! Great video man!
I try to stick to just baseball haha. Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the video but you gotta find other words other than however. It's kinda distracting TT
Thank you! I'll definitely try to work on that
so why is exactly is some guy who throws 100mph, like 99% of mllb pitchers these days, so great? I don't get it other than MLB trying to pathetically hype up a guy for no reason
I hope pirates don’t waste him by trying to protect his arm. They’re gonna have 4-good years with him til they have to trade him due to cheapness.
Something tells me he won’t be here for the full 4 yrs. The Pirates are notorious for selling talent for profit.
You have 6 years of arbitration, there’s no way they trade him before that
The Pirates will have him for only 3 years, not 4
@@toogud7918 Arbitration starts with the 3rd season. With the way Skenes is pitching, the Pirates will not be able to afford him when he starts his arbitration years. If I were Skenes I would not sign a contract with the Pirates to keep him through his arbitration years.
@@davidjones5547 the highest arb ever was Juan Soto at 31 million and ohtani at 30 million. Skenws would prob get around that. Pirates are not a total poverty franchise and are paying Chapman 10 mill so why not pay skenes 30 mill.
He's the Caitlin Clark of MLB.
Comparing an elite male athlete to a female one is kind of odd.
People were interested in MLB before Skenes made his debut.
@@MrSefiroh That's because you missed the point of analogy and focused on an irrelevant difference and look like a sexist now. The WNBA like MLB each have a rookie sensation who is fascinating the fans and boosting ratings. The comparison is simple. You must be dense.
@@DexterHaven the fact you talk about the wnba likes it credible. 😂.
Oh no, calling me sexist is going to ruin my day. Please stop.
@@MrSefiroh That makes no sense logically. The WNBA is fit for analogy, silly. Plus, the issue isn't me calling you 'sexist'; it's you demonstrating it with a focus on gender in a derogatory way when it wasn't even relevant to the analogy. You can't think clearly yet again.
Dude arm will be blown out in a couple years.
That is certainly the trend nowadays but hopefully not
Sadly enough he will be washed and on his way to his first Tommy John by next year. They don't make work horses with rubber arms no more.
Dude's a unicorn.
As I was watching this video a pirate pop up just came up Jared Jones placed on the 15 day injured list. Injuries can happen in an instant hopefully it doesn’t happen to Skenes.
Man
Livvy Dunne?
He looks like he was a bouncer at a gay night club in the 70s
Horrible follow through mechanics. Elbow will be gone in a year or two. Just compare his follow through with Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens. All that being said, I think he is awesome.
he hasn't given up 3 runs in all of his starts right?
You gave up one run in his first game and left two runners on and they were walked home so technically he gave up three in his first start of four innings
dudes had zero health issues yet you felt the need to talk about him having arm issues in the future? foh
Out of nowhere? They showed his last season of lsu on sports center. He won the cws. He was 1 overall. wtf you mean out of nowhere? He should have started opening day for the pirates. He was the best pitcher in the big leagues while he was in the minors. Fuck you mean out of nowhere.
Yea, some people really don't know what that means.
What u mean by "out of nowhere"????????
Out of nowhere because he was pitching at LSU last summer and now he's dominating dominating Major League baseball no minors
@@shadowlazersit's still fundamentally wrong. When you go first overall in the draft it is with the understanding you have the highest chance of becoming an elite player out of ALL those other players.
Being drafted in the 8th and coming in and performing like this would be "out of nowhere."
Either way, he always had the tag of being elite.
Out of nowhere? Dude was the number one pick, last summer lol
Ya ..last summer..thats the point..a few weeks in the minors and he's dominating mlb
It’s baseball dude. You don’t usually just see someone get drafted and make an immediate impact. It can take years for too prospects to make it theough the minors and even longer to prove they belong in the majors. There was actually a debate whether or not he or crews should have gone 1st overall. With the benefit of hindsight, him going 1 was obvious, but it wasn’t even at the time. He’s already dominating the mlb, it’s unprecedented
This number 1 overall pick just came out of nowhere😂
How often is the number one pick in baseball play the next season
Baseball drafts are nothing like football or basketball, it’s way more unpredictable and less publicized
TOO TALL TO BE A FIGHTER PILOT … so probably made a good choice, unless he wanted to give up his mlb dream to fly bloated bombers or transport planes 😂😂😂
Who thinks he is the next Mark the bird Fidrych
Skenes will be a Yankee or Dodger in 3 years
all good till he gets tj cause he will he is pretty good though a bit overhyped
And they are gonna trade him.
The MLB isn't really baseball any more. They should just change the name.
Eventual Yankee or dodger or whatever. Ugh.
