Skenes didn't start throwing 100+ until he went to LSU. The pitching coach put him on an MLB training program and worked his mechanics and then suddenly he was throwing 102-103. He can throw faster but chooses not to.
As a lifelong diehard Pirates fan. I just love this. I know we won’t be able to keep him throughout his whole career. So I will enjoy this ride while it lasts. Everytime he takes the mound, it’s an event. Truly a special player.
The poster boy for "damn, he sure got here fast!" was Dave Steib of the Toronto Blue Jays in 1978. That guy pitched like 3 games in college as an emergency replacement for starters getting lit up. He was an 400 hitting outfielder with power, who just so happened to possess a cannon arm. A Jays scout offered him a minor league contract after watching him pitch only once, as an emergency pitcher just trying to get the ball over the plate. In less than 130 innings in the minor leagues, he was called up to the major leagues. He threw over 2000 innings in his first 10 seasons. This dude was amazing. Sometimes you find a guy like Paul Skenes, that's just that good.
Yeah, honestly I was trying to say that he took over the entire baseball *scene* out of nowhere, not just MLB. So including when he became popular at LSU and got drafted #1 overall. I understand that it was maybe poor wording though
His coach at Air Force deserves huge props. "You will serve your narion eventually" is such a good point. Even if he flames out of the MLB due to injury, he has a career immediately after baseball.
I wouldnt really say it was "out of nowhere." The guy was drafted #1 for a reason. He was a beast while at LSU. In the first minute of the video they talk about how he's the best prospect they've ever seen. It's pretty expected that he's gonna excel. To your point, maybe not to this degree quite yet... But still, he didn't really come out of nowhere.
I thought at LSU he was more over the top like Verlander and Nolan Ryan. He needs to get back to that or he's not going to last. Save the splinker for when you really need it. You got 5 pitches you can control, work on that, and make going over top your primary. He's big and powerful, too many pitches in this video are going to blow his arm out, much like Strider.
Skenes throws with mostly his legs and core. It’s why he can throw so hard, but also why his arm might hold up. Will he 100% need Tommy John surgery at some point? Yes. But the surgery is world class now, it usually doesn’t have an impact on pitching velocity after a year.
120 pitches is 3 of 4 games…Nolan Ryan hold my beer. Anyone thinking a starter going 5 innings as a quality start is just sad. A work horse stud #1 pitcher should be going 7, at minimum. This kid is electric!
Like all good pitchers, everyone forgets, good hitters adjusts to all the different pitches thrown to them who eventually hit it for a base hit. No new pitch that comes out by a pitcher lasts forever, when hitters adjust to the new pitches...
People do not realize. They were working on mechanics and he had game situation bull pen sessions durring this. It's not uncommon to be put on 35 pitch counts because of the frequency of his sessions. Pit even went into a 6 man rotation to get him more recovery time. They habe another young guy that should get more attention thanbhe does named jones. If they add another OF bat and bull pen arm, they're going to make noise in the playoffs. They were dealing with injuries and are getting healthy. They already made significant ground in the division. I believe they were 12 games out and now only 6. They're only 1.5 out in the wild card.
He didn’t commission, nor did he enlist. The service academies are training you to be an officer. Most likely he didn’t contract yet so his baseball dream could be kept alive. I’m not sure exactly what the rules are because I’m in rotc at a state school which is a little different than a service academy.
The video says arm injuries are more prevalent than ever. That would mean with the rise of limiting everyone’s pitches from the time they are in little league all the way through to the mlb, isn’t working.
Those last 4 games got him a national championship and made him the #1 overall pick. He doesn’t labor when he throws. It’s too bad we all obsess over pitchers throwing too much because we are worried something may happen. Not everyone blows out. Could he yeah but that doesn’t mean he will.
The title was meant to include when he became popular at LSU and got drafted #1 overall, not just after he got to MLB. I can see how it could be interpreted that way though

Looking at Paul Skenes, I worry. The dude is utterly dominate on the mound at times, but the human elbow isn't designed to take that kind of repeated stress, over and over again, over a course of years. Maybe we will get lucky though, and he'll have both the velocity of Nolan Ryan, as well as his tendon strength. The game would defenitly be better for it.
