    In this video we'll learn about Jim Knowles, the new Defensive Coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the way that he elevated the defense of the Oklahoma State Cowboy football team to #4 in the country. We'll learn about his background with coaches like Gary Patterson and Gary Darnell, and then we'll see how he took Patterson's 4-2-5 TCU defense and put his own spin on it, bringing in coverage concepts from other schools of defense (especially 3-3-5 teams like Iowa State and New Mexico) and creating his unique Leo position to be a jack-of-all-trades along the DL.

      Thanks, I'm glad it all makes sense and comes through how I want it to. I haven't followed Hicks' draft prospects too much. It looks like he's on the bubble, probably due to height? In that case it probably comes down to how much he can contribute on special teams, and then using that to hang around until he gets a shot, unless a team falls in love with him/sees him as under-rated.

  • @coryhoffman9179
    @coryhoffman9179 Год назад +3

    I think the element that the Jack/Leo brings in the spread option world is that you are able to adjust him to the run strength and neutralize the offenses numbers advantage without bringing another guy into the box as he is a DE/3-4 OLB type player able to protect a LB so and allowing backside to account for QB read.
    Good stuff.

      Thanks, and I'm pumped to see how it goes too. The Big 10 is a very different conference, but a lot of what Knowles does in coverage does a nice job of adding numbers to the box even against teams that don't spread you out. His expertise in front alignments and run blitzing is very transferrable to a more pro-style conference as well. You might see more of the Man/Cover-0 stuff because of Ohio State's athletes, which will let you get Safeties into the run fit and make it hard to run the ball, as long as everybody can hold up in coverage.

    Hey bud, the defense he developed at Oklahoma State used quite a bit of the three man front and also was more similar to the defenses you saw at Iowa State the last four to five years since Campbell arrived in Ames or the defenses that former West Virginia, now NC State Coordinator Tony Gibson utilizes as it is designed to try to slow down some of the wide open offenses that you see in the Big XII, also if you look at them on film you don’t see many teams bracket the slot receivers as opposed to outside receivers but this was a feature of the Knowles defense!

      Half of playing good defense is about attitude. Superior, physically gifted HS athletes often have attitude-but the wrong kind. Knowles is going to have a lot of terrain to cover in this regard-in adding effort to the physical talent on this team.

    • @TheCoordinatorProject
      @TheCoordinatorProject  2 года назад

      Awesome! If you don't mind, what was it about this one that you especially liked, so that I can do more of it in the future? I definitely want to look at Malzahn. Right now I'm not sure if it'd be his most recent UCF offense, or if I'd go back to Auburn as part of a series that I want to do on historical offenses, but until then my Tony Elliot video covers at least some of that background (via Chad Morris).

    • @lochfoster1514
      @lochfoster1514 2 года назад

      @@TheCoordinatorProject I don’t know specifically. I felt like this one was just very clear and concise, and it was interesting with the background being adopted from another coach but how they evolved differently in it, as well as the cross-man for corners being something I haven’t really seen before.

    • @lochfoster1514
      @lochfoster1514 2 года назад

      @@TheCoordinatorProject And yeah, I’ve seen the Tony Elliot offense one, and I’m a UCF student, so I think Malzahn’s offense seems very unique and interesting in its mix of being a combination of conventional run schemes, wing-T principles, hurry-up tempo, and complex RPO’s mixed with simple passing schemes. I also wanted to know the difference between his offense, specifically passing offense, with the introduction of the new OC who he had previously starting in 2017 when Auburn won the SEC West. UCF’s run game was solid this year despite injuries, but the passing game was rough at times, especially deep.

    Big 12 QB play and offenses were way down in 2021

    • @TheCoordinatorProject
      @TheCoordinatorProject  2 года назад +1

      This is true, and definitely something to keep in mind. When I was planning this breakdown it was tough to decide which offenses would be the most relevant to watch Knowles against. The stats are definitely padded by offenses that couldn't take advantage of mistakes. For the plays in this video, though, I do think that the success of the secondary rotations were clear schematic wins and didn't depend on inferior offensive talent, with the INT vs. Texas being one possible example where a better QB might've led to a different outcome. Overall, though, I'd agree that this defense probably wouldn't have been all the way at #4 vs. better competition. I do think that they'd still be top-25, though!

  • @zatchg1212
    @zatchg1212 Год назад +2

    Knowles doesn’t have 4 years at Ohio st to turn it around. He better make them a top 25 defense asap or he’s on the hot seat in year 2. Ohio st is one of those programs where going 11-2 and a rose bowl win is disappointing. Not allowed to lose there

    How do you think Texas defense will do in year 2 under Pete Kwiatkowski

    • @TheCoordinatorProject
      @TheCoordinatorProject  2 года назад

      I haven't broken down this year's unit yet, but schematically I think it was going to be hard to go from Todd Orlando to Chris Ash to Pete Kwiatkowski in three consecutive seasons without major disruptions to personnel, just because of style of play. Kwiatkowski's best defenses at Washington based out of a true 2-gapping 3-4 front (or Nickel substitutions from it), and although his Nickel packages aren't completely different from Ash personnel-wise, there are still plenty of differences in coverage and pressure philosophy that would be hard to perfect in year one. The Big 12 is a different challenge vs. the PAC-12, so I'd want to be careful about saying too much without seeing exactly what the problems were in 2021, but my guess is that this is a case where that extra year in the system will be really valuable, and will allow for accelerated improvement.

      Do you expect him to produce a top 5 defense with freshman and sophomore 3 stars? Of course he needed 3 or 4 years to get it going. A lot of the players he had weren’t athletic freaks like some of the guys at Ohio State. Now that he has nearly a 5 star at every position on defense he should be able to produce that same defense he did last year at Oklahoma State, this year and next year at Ohio State.
